I came home from Army leave 10 days before this. We got tickets and I was at this game. Sat in end zone under scoreboard side and saw Riddick score his touchdown right near us.
I can't believe that for decades I've been wondering where the heck I would hear this "Jaws" like theme music. And now I know where it came from. From watching this football game decades ago on TV as a kid. I guess every time the Bills would kick off inside their stadium back in the day they would play the "Jaws" theme music. I appreciate @Bart Simpson sharing this game. That theme music was bouncing inside my head for decades....lol.
This was the first home playoff game at then-Rich Stadium, now New Era Field. There have been ten playoff games there, all between 1988-96. The Bills have gone 9-1 in playoff games there -- they won the first nine before losing a wild card game to Jacksonville.

The 2019 Bills remind me of the 1988 Bills more than any other Bills playoff team since the 1964-65 AFL Championship teams. Theyve won alot of tight, low scoring games this year mostly on the strength of their awesome defense...exactly like they did in 1988. The 1990-93 Bills were carried more by their offense than their defense. They did have some great players on D like Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Darryl Talley, and Shane Conlan but they were vulnerable against the run and the Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys exploited that weakness in the Super Bowl. I believe if Fred Smerlas and Art Still were still in Buffalo for the 1990 season they would've won Super Bowl 25. They were much better run defenders than Jeff Wright and Leon Seals were. Wright really wasnt big enough to play 3-4 Nose Tackle and Seals really shouldve only come in on passing downs
Super bowl 25 should have been won by buffalo. 1990 buffalo bills were better than everyone in 1990. It was a fluke they lost. This 88 team had a championship defense and i often wonder if they would have won SB23. It would have been a defensive war in SB23
@@justinyoung8062 The giants were tough and came in with the right attitude/team energy after upsetting the 49ers. The Bills were better to me (and better than 49ers), but the 51-3 raider game was also a bit of a fluke and made them overconfident.
What a great season this was! It was so much fun to watch. Had the Bills beaten Cincy during the regular season and gotten Home Field in the playoffs, I think they would have made the Super Bowl. Bills were just too tough to beat at home in '88.
Or had lohmiller made the 19 yd fg at the end of regulation. Skins had bengals beat in week 17. Not enough bills fans talk about 88. It was a fluke that bills weren't in SB 23. I think they had a great shot to beat niners.
Our offense was too inconsistent and disappeared at the wrong times. I think the Bills scored in single digits in five regular season games in '88. Even in the playoffs, we didn't exactly light it up. 17 against Houston and only 10 against Cincinnati. That loss to Tampa Bay killed us. The Bucs were hot trash in '88, their defense gave up over 400 points and Vinny Testaverde threw 35(!)interceptions. There is NO WAY we should have lost to them. That cost us the #1 seed and a Super Bowl berth in my opinion. I'll go to my grave believing the Bills would have beat the Bengals in the AFC championship game if it was at Rich Stadium. Arrgh.
@@justinyoung8062 Niners were hot 2nd half of season when Walsh went with Montana over Young. Bills were winning a lot of close games with their top defense and conservative offense. The Bills didn't have enough experience or inspired offensive playcalling to beat genius Bill Walsh and cold-blooded Joe Montana in XXIII.
this game was so tight....so fun. Defense, mistakes, big plays and LOTS of bad kicking. watch Bills fan show his true colors by flashing the middle finger in front of the camera during one of Zendajas' muffs.

@@marccole7902 Maybe I wasn't, and I am definitely not nowadays. One of my father's friends told me in 1985 that he and his wife made attending the SB their annual vacation. I asked him, but what if the two teams that make it are two teams you can't stand? He said it "didn't matter" I suppose the pageantry, and just being on holiday made up for everything else. I remember the four straight years; Buffalo vs... the NFC East, those were four straight years that I took on extra shifts or went to the movies or did just about anything else. Proof positive that Moon shouldn’t be in the HOF. Good player and deserves to be in the CFL HOF but not playing in a conference championship game says it all. He didn’t play at a high level when it mattered most.
@@MaximusWolfe Its the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He won 5 straight Grey Cups before coming to the NFL. Forget Doug Williams, Warren Moon broke the QB color barrier. He ran a prolific scoring offense for years. He was a 9 time Pro Bowler. He stayed prolific well into his 40s and played until he was 44. Playoff success was the only knock on him. But most of that was due to a porous defense. He also held the all-time pro football passing yardage at retirement. He is a HOF QB due to his resume, although on the lower tier.
