Of course for young viewers keep in mind that not all hits were like this, but most of them were aspired to. A defensive player particularly those that covered receivers or rushed qbs motivation was to get the player to worry more about them than throwing or catching the football. Not every player was a tough guy even in the old days and if you could get in a really nasty hit you might benefit later on in the season when that guy was still remembering the bonecrushing he had suffered weeks earlier. We really had no idea about CTE then, some fans just were concerned about spinal injuries, but shaking off a concussion was considered toughness and expected when possible. We knew about the effects of taking hits in boxing, but for some reason didn't think that it translated into football, maybe because of the helmet.

the hit on 49ers Neihmiah (sp?) in 83 changed the game... It caused offenses around the league to teach their WR's to turn upfield after the catch when you see a zone to avoid that kind of hit... Passing changed after that to bias towards west coast/ sideline to sideline passing game
@@damionbranscomb4599 you must not have watched. Fenciks hit was perfect on Joiner. Many of these hits are with the shoulder, exactly what they are teaching them today.
If you want to know why records are being broken and teams are scoring 75+ points in championship games-watch this. Wrs and QBs would get disemboweled for running around the middle of the field or tip-toeing down the sidelines. If a wr had to jump for a ball, his life was at risk.
That's why (and the only reason why) Lynn Swann made the HOF. His quarterback Always overthrown him or threw high. Most of his catches was just like that. He won Super Bowl MVP one year with only 4 catches!! It's bc all 4 catches was just like this one or better
Two points to make. First, football players used to be warriors (Ronnie Lott referred to himself that way all the time) now they are fashion models with uniforms. Games between warriors MATTER, games between fashion models, not so much. Second, the NFL changed the rules in 1978 to the well known 5 yard bump. This rule change led directly to the majority of the hits you see on the video since a defensive backs only hope of stopping a pass completion often was jarring the ball loose or creating fear in the receiver. The rule introduced continuous high speed into the game and with high speed you get big collisions. The NFL's solution is what we have now: yellow flags and fines create passive defenses that stand around watching uncovered receivers catch TD after TD. In other words, today's NFL is partially fake. A once great game is now a farce due to owners greed.
Great commentary @John Sharpe everything u said is absolutely true plus accurate..hate that they sissified the game so the commissioner & owners can make more 💵 off it. Sad the game lost its luster/gusto of hard hitting & play making
@@cstrutherskgs Nobody’s forcing them to play and they are making millions doing it. How about play long enough to be set for life but before you receive enough concussions to become suicidal and/or forget your name?
Truth. People can’t look at these current records and stats without context. Nowadays an average QB tosses at least 4000 yards and 30 TDs. Back then those numbers meant that you were probably the league leader. You had to earn every yard and score then.
At the 4 minute mark you’ll see DeBerg Qb for the Niners…he has a bulge in the back of his shoulder pads. That is the very first device used in the NFL for the QB and coach to communicate through the helmet and headset. Leave it up to silicon valley to give the Niners an edge. It would soon be commonplace throughout the league
Goddamn he took him apart! I read somewhere that Scott Brantley is pretty messed up from his time in the league, and Eric Hipple is a motivational speaker now.
pretty much. It was concrete with a very thin layer of padding, then the turf that was about as cushioned as a thin yoga mat. Many injuries on Astro turf, reason they don't play on it anymore
back when you could REALLY hit the other players, and a defenseless receiver got destroyed not allowed to catch the ball(yes sometimes they called it, but they more than not didnt call it and let them play). The game was much more exciting and rough back then, yes more injuries but that was the risk/reward of the game and the fans gave these guys the drive to do it. 5:03 was brutal, I remember that he didnt move for a while he got hit by a Mack truck.
@@THEREALGATESin today's flag football league? In a heartbeat!!! You stand a bigger chance getting hurt by a hard throw than a tackle; that's why qbs play for a million years, they're throwing those passes and not allowed to even be looked at for too long without an automatic 15 yard penalty
Gotta love throwback 🏈 now if you so much as even sneeze on a quarterback or any other ball carrier issa flag or ejection shit crazy...shit i almost forgot about the RONA!!!

And the hits just keep on coming
Even the commentary has no mercy
I’m now 61 and these men were real men! 💪✊
i tuned in plannin on only watching 5-10 minutes, an all the sudden the clips are over! i love me some ole school football! honestly its not the same anymore, n i really dont watch, something that i never ever though i would ever say or not do up until bout 4 years ago. i traded my passion in for the ufc i guess, which may prove that i indeed do miss the real violence n rage that football was to me growing up! atleast i was able to grow up n play the sport it was meant to be played, playing my last game in 06, which sadly, i had no idea was my last, as i missed the last two games of the season due to a wicked bad concussion, that sent me to the er the next, due to a black out, n having spinal fluid coming out my noise. happened at a u of wyoming game, as we played the towns team on friday, stayed the night n went to the college game the next day, n as tcu was running out, watching from the endzone fence, i passed out, fell back, woke up to cop, n went to the hopital in the staduim. the then loaded me on our school bus, rushed me to the memorial hospital in laramie wyoming, n i got the whole gammit, an stayed there over night, getting a 5 hour ride home the next day via some kind parents whom had offered to stay with me n make sure i was alright.
Ahh when football was football, when you could actually tackle someone without some targeting or personal foul penalty
There was a foul on the 1st play
Yea all those guys from these video's probably disagree with you.
Half of these were illegal even then bro….maybe more than half
I agree with you for most of these. A handful were uncalled for.
@@packergeek10 all players are aware of what can happen yet they choose to be pro athletes safety is lame if it makes the game less entertaining
I really love the tracking noise from the VHS tapes ❤❤❤
BOOM! He's on his back!
Back when football was football.
I cant believe i just found this, the 80s was the greatest decade, the stadiums, announcers, players, uniforms! Everything about the NFL was better than we could ever dream of!! We didnt know how good we had it
Great video man!
This is incredible man thank you
Eric Hipple might be immortal.
What a catch by lynn swann
the hit on 49ers Neihmiah (sp?) in 83 changed the game... It caused offenses around the league to teach their WR's to turn upfield after the catch when you see a zone to avoid that kind of hit... Passing changed after that to bias towards west coast/ sideline to sideline passing game
Wonder if Renaldo Nehemiah went back to track and field after that hit
if you could do the 90s, thatd be great
johnbs199 I will try to eventually!
@@hits.productions and the 2000s
Every hit that you see on this video would be a penalty in this day and age!
@@damionbranscomb4599 Because CTE exist, and they’re trying to protect the players.
@@damionbranscomb4599 you must not have watched. Fenciks hit was perfect on Joiner. Many of these hits are with the shoulder, exactly what they are teaching them today.
I sure do miss “separating the receiver from the ball”
If you want to know why records are being broken and teams are scoring 75+ points in championship games-watch this. Wrs and QBs would get disemboweled for running around the middle of the field or tip-toeing down the sidelines. If a wr had to jump for a ball, his life was at risk.
Different breed back then
All of this hits are personal fouls and jail time in today's soft NFL.
@@jamesarmstrong88dude these first two weeks alone I think we have half the league questionable or injured for weak 3 lol
@@jamesarmstrong88that’s why this generation is much weaker than the legend of the past
It's like everybody tackling sliders was set to 'kill' back in the day
😂😅
This is what we should be paying top dollar to watch! Today it's watch cheap or not at all!
I'm Loving seeing my Bears in these highlights!!!!
Insanity how fast and hard hitting that defense was.
excellent compilation
Swann hanging on to the ball at 3:12 is UNREAL
That's why (and the only reason why) Lynn Swann made the HOF. His quarterback Always overthrown him or threw high. Most of his catches was just like that. He won Super Bowl MVP one year with only 4 catches!! It's bc all 4 catches was just like this one or better
Outstanding video , great job
I have been watching the NFL since the 1960's. The 80's were the most violent by far.
Ah back when the game was real and u had to earn your touchdowns
@@blackcobra9465 how dare they care about mental health of players
@@cstrutherskgs Nobody’s forcing them to play and they are making millions doing it. How about play long enough to be set for life but before you receive enough concussions to become suicidal and/or forget your name?
@@blackcobra9465 Sadly, as long as pussified spectators continue to watch it, football will remain like this or get further pussified.
4:54 that sums up pre 2000's football perfectly lol
Fantastic video liked and subscribed.
Tom Brady would not have a chance back then
Too bad football isn't like this anymore I miss it & one of the reasons I just can't watch the current version of the nfl these days.
Please make another video if you have footage. Must have watched this 20 times by now
I totally feel this! I'm patiently waiting for another one of these compilations!
I forgot the NFL wasn’t always two hand touch
Man the authenticity of play is very obvious . When you compare it to todays NFL it looks like today we watch glorified flag football.
We do, I don't anymore. It's not watchable. At least Shady finally left, now there's a little less estrogen in the league
I bet none of today's receivers would dare "griddy" if they played like this still. And I love the griddy, but hey.....🤷🏾♂️
I miss 1980's NFL FOOTBALL 🏈. NFL today trash 🗑️🗑️ so sad has become "Left"
Your moms on my left testy.
& the rich owners that made today's NFL soft and pussyfied are "right"
14:23 He would still be suspended if that happened now. Damn...
Exactly
It sounded like a car wreck jeez
That guy was #1 in the world in the 110m hurdles in track & field. Wonder if he went back to track after that hit
30:56 is what you are looking for...
Goddamn he took him apart! I read somewhere that Scott Brantley is pretty messed up from his time in the league, and Eric Hipple is a motivational speaker now.
Sheesh 😬
Illegal hits were penalized back then too, the misremembering is hilarious
i will ALWAYS cherish that voice at 6:08, you will be missed. RIP
At 40:46, it was Largent's revenge on Harden when Harden almost killed him on a hit in Denver.
Wasn't the turf back then like smashing into concrete?
pretty much. It was concrete with a very thin layer of padding, then the turf that was about as cushioned as a thin yoga mat. Many injuries on Astro turf, reason they don't play on it anymore
Took me a while to realize that was Madden doing color in the clip at 5:50. Very subdued. None of the boom, doink, whap stuff that came later.
Jaworski almost snapped in half that was brutal
Dude looked like a defensive tackle with speed
Dam his head snapped back like he was in a car accident a hit like that today you are probably kicked out of the league ijs.
You could probably make a compilation of Jaws getting the shit knocked out of him alone.
Mike Hartenstien #73 drafted #2 after Walter Payton. Played 12 years for the bears
Call him The Seed, every fall he got planted
Seattle was brutal on special teams.
back when you could REALLY hit the other players, and a defenseless receiver got destroyed not allowed to catch the ball(yes sometimes they called it, but they more than not didnt call it and let them play). The game was much more exciting and rough back then, yes more injuries but that was the risk/reward of the game and the fans gave these guys the drive to do it.
5:03 was brutal, I remember that he didnt move for a while he got hit by a Mack truck.
What the heck was that blocking by the LT? He must have hated Jaws
What we all just watched was called the good old day's of the NFL. What we call it now is pillow fighting
I agree totally
U wouldn’t do it tho
@@THEREALGATESin today's flag football league? In a heartbeat!!! You stand a bigger chance getting hurt by a hard throw than a tackle; that's why qbs play for a million years, they're throwing those passes and not allowed to even be looked at for too long without an automatic 15 yard penalty
Good content
Too many of these hits would be illegal today
Gotta love throwback 🏈 now if you so much as even sneeze on a quarterback or any other ball carrier issa flag or ejection shit crazy...shit i almost forgot about the RONA!!!
It's crazy to most of these hits are on astroturf damn!
No wonder the QB ratings weren’t that good. The defenses were way better and tougher
Ahhh feels like Christmas
Back when the NFL was played in an era by real men. They only cared about winning games and championships.
This is brutal, I can’t believe this was normal and then these commentators saying “legal, clean hit” lmao
Yep all the time
Ur an idiot
Ikr I prefer the new nfl, I actually like roughing the passer and pass interfearence deciding games. If a DE accidentally touches the QB 1 second after the balls gone it should be a penalty. I only know 4 players anyways Mahomes Brady Jackson and Rodgers so that’s all I care about.

@@macabree5856 i cant agree that the NFL is not more exciting now - there's just no more emphasis on defensive prowess for obvious reasons
