I started playing guitar in 76/77 in common with many teenagers of that era, due to Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi. But in 78 I discovered Magazine and John McGeoch. I’ll be forever grateful to Ritchie and Tony for getting me started, but John was the one who inspired me the most and demonstrated how it was possible to play ‘rock’ guitar in new and inventive ways. I always enjoy your McGeoch breakdowns Adrian, and this one is no different. Brilliant. As for the tone on the intro riff, I’m pretty sure it was a studio phaser, possibly with the sweep manually adjusted.
Everything that you said about the song, the band and John I completely agree with, always in my top 5 bands and played regularly. An excellent job with the tuition, 👏, your ears are better than mine; in all the years I had never picked up on the drone. I always played it closed root and third, as soon as you you started I was mentally face palming 😅. A huge thank you 😊. Like deployed 👍
I mentioned to you a few years ago that i saw John with Magazine at Egerton's Hotel in Toronto tourin Secondhand Daylight. He was unique in his playing, and I can never get enough of him or your tutorials on him. Thanks Adrian, and keep up the great work.
Excellent video as always! 18K views for this in depth and high quality video is criminal. Throughout the years you have always been my favourite guitar teacher. Thank you!
i went to a very very messy party in the late 80's and a friend brought Secondhand Daylight LP with him. Ended up playing it throughout the night over and over. It has been inside me ever since
When I first started taking guitar lessons, I discovered the world of online guitar teachers. To be honest, I never thought I'd advance enough to be able to follow along with your lessons. But here I am, playing along with your tutorial for a song I've never heard before. What a joy. I've experienced much frustration and doubt that I'm progressing, but I'll never give up. Adrian, your lessons are so elegant. You really do make playing the guitar look effortless. Thank you for the inspiring lessons, and for bringing so many amazing songs/bands/musicians to my attention.
I think jesper is correct. It's why it also appears in a Buzzcocks song. At the very least it was written by Howard and that's why it's shared between bands.
Interviewed Magazine once on their Real Life tour . The rest of the band were fine ...including McGeogh. Howard Devoto on the other hand was terrifying !!
Finally, someone plays this correctly, I learned it from watching the old Magazine Videos, there are several other "Learn to Play" videos that get it totally wrong, especially the main riff, great job, great song!
I've absolutely loved this channel for years - your taste is impeccable! For me personally the years 1977 - 1981 (when I was growing up between 12 and 16 - John Peel under the bedclothes and all that) were the magic years in music and you've got it covered. You've also got quite a distinctly engaging manner with a bit of a sense of humour behind you. Wish you all the best - Patreon joined my friend!
True Class - your examples, the guitarists you feature and your execution and explanation thereof. Extremely high quality inspiration and education - every time! Well done and thank you.
That was succinctly put Adrian. This is music that resonates with us and it’s more important in coming up with cool riffs than technical wizardry (although it would be nice to have that skill too) A lot to learn, thanks for your continued inspiration. David.
Great video. I bought Secondhand Daylight when it was released and wore it out over the years. You get really close to a lot of those innovative McGeoch guitar sounds. Feed The Enemy is another of my favourite guitar tracks of his.
Brilliant one of many favourite songs, John's playing was fantastic on all his songs with Magazine & The Banshees, glad you have gone back to do another Magazine one though, such an underrated band.
I am 60 years old, I hope I have not left it too late, I have been watching all these guitar lessons, and I have found your lessons very encouraging. I am a complete novice, but something has told me to get on with it. Maybe one day I will nail that Arabian Nights track on my Epiphone les Paul
Yeah agree, as much McGeogh as possible please! The bio from a couple of years back was great. This vid also made me order the last new Electro Valovola OFF1 in the world (according to Luca who made them), can't wait! Hoping it will replace my FuzzFace and Moog Drive as an all in one.
Excellent episode - love John's playing. This particular track to me shows some of the Phil Manzenara/Mid Roxy influence he flirted with. Even the greats have heroes.
Thanks Adrian, reminds me of why I loved Magazine and Second Hand Daylight so much..I will try to learn this later in my guitar journey:P still on beginner courses atm, appreciate your work!
Song choice has always been so unique and close to my tastes. Getting hyped when a new video of yours pops up on my feed. And obviously, each time I immediately grab my jag and play along Adrian-sama 😁 Respect for John and don't forget the relevant book that was mentioned in another video, it's very interesting (The Light Pours Out of Me).
Fantastic as always. Always loved that spy/superhero theme style motifs that Magazine managed to weave into quite a few of their songs and this track is another great example. Perhaps no surprise the b-side of their second single is a brilliant cover of Goldfinger.
Thanks for doing this. Watching you play it made me realize how similar the main verse riff is to The Damned’s Wait For The Blackout main riff pattern. John McGeoch and Captain Sensible are my two fave guitarists.
@@acpg Thanks Adrian! I went to Amazon to see what they had and all I could find was an import of Secondhand Daylight for $177.00. I'll see if Magazine has their own site that might sell it. I'm really surprised that I never heard this song, or that group before. It sounds exactly like music, people I was in bands with in the 80's, would've gotten in to.
Cheers again for shining the spotlight again on McGeoch. I myself want to look into his style of playing especially reading of his use of unconventional scales. I want to incorporate that to my own approach in my composition and playing. Interesting approach >technicality.
Adrian, I love this! Pretty spot on (as to be expected with your brilliant detailed lessons) for my fav Magazine track from back in the day. Question, if you please: Is your Princeton Reverb a reissue? ‘65? Thanks and be well!
Another brilliant McGeoch masterclass, Adrian! Keep those post-punk lessons coming :) I just wondered what the microphones were that you used for your amp? I can see an SM57, but what is the other one?
Wow I missed this as I was away for a week Fantastic to get more John McGeoch You’re on point as usual Adrian, great playing I’d love you to do Into the light, and how about some Geordie Walker ? Please please pretty please !
Have to say--been playing all my life and am a gigging musician, but when I check in here I always find something interesting. Should have subscribed a long time ago. On another note--like a lot of guys I'm always looking for little things to improve. Curious what picks you use, string gauges, amps, etc. Maybe that's on the channel, but you get a great sound on everything you play, and you are very fluid. More power to you.
Rays And Hail: 1978 - 1981 is a good Magazine compilation to start with. Or the first three albums (and the singles....Give Me Everything is classic McGeoch).
Hi. Great channel & great taste in music. Not sure if you're a fan but any chance of some Carter USM? Only Living Boy...,Sheriff Fatman, Bloodsport for All, Shoppers Paradise, etc.
excellent choice. i would also play along with the keyboard melody on the `i dont even know what it could mean` part. another great of johns` ilk is stuart adamson. any thoughts on perhaps john mkay of the original banshees line up?
Yes, that end melody would definitely work well on the guitar. I did a lesson on Into the Valley a while back and mentioned the McGeoch connection. Both Yamaha SG users too. And John Mckay is fabulous too, perhaps unfairly overshadowed by McGeoch, but a great, inventive player in his own right.
yes, doing a deep dive into the channel and found the alternative playlist 😂. east bay ray is a unique and gifted player; worth considering a kennedys track ever thought of tackling a sonic youth track .id be curious on whether you could decipher the tunings. i suspect thurston favoured dadgad.teenage riot seems to fit.@@acpg
Thanks Adrian!! Great song, band etc If you havent already, cd you give us The Light Pours Out Of Me please mate? I cd add a hell of a lot more (Buzzcocks, Damned).... Best guitar tutorial channel on utube!!
I worked out this song out a few years ago and always felt it be a great song to do as a cover, but I’ve never got round to it or people that would want to do it with me. Pity, great song and great tuition by your good self. How about a good Cocteau Twins tuition. One of the three big Indie bands of the 1980s, along with the Smiths and New Order. I don’t think you’ve done anything over their stuff yet have you?
It's nice that you do what you want to do and not being ruled by what's trending or by any algorithm. I've overlooked Magazine. What's a good starting point?
Yes! I would start at the beginning. Great stuff. Albums: 1978 Real Life 1979 Secondhand Daylight 1980 The Correct Use of Soap 1981 Magic, Murder and the Weather
Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. I'm trusting in nothing but the blood of Jesus to pay for my sins to keep me out of hell. For undeniable proof through archaeological evidence, Expedition Bible is the best channel. The god of this world is the devil and controls all politics and religion especially the Catholic Church as counterfeit Christianity. I wish I could just chill and play guitar but things are so close on the time I can't be silent sorry.
This sounds like a bunch of made up nonsense to me. You should try chilling out and playing guitar, it’s way more fun than hanging out with downer people at church. Ask me how I know. Good luck friend may you find peace .
Bro you can bring back McGeoch as many times as you need.
I started playing guitar in 76/77 in common with many teenagers of that era, due to Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi. But in 78 I discovered Magazine and John McGeoch. This is literally the best guitar lesson channel on youtube
Thank you Adrian! Any John McGeoch is an absolute MASTERCLASS. Do as many as possible! Thank you!
Magazine are my favourite band of all time, McGeoch was superb, thanks for this :)
Excellent breakdown. Thank you. McGeogh was a genius. Way ahead of the game. He gets more respect as the years pass.
Everything that you said about the song, the band and John I completely agree with, always in my top 5 bands and played regularly. Joyous noise! Never apologise for going wherever the mood takes you, Adrian. It’s why most of us follow you ...
McGeoch is always welcome. And this clip is sensational.
Magazine not known by many. One of my top five bands ever. John yes, fantastic player. Thank you for this.

The intro to "Shot by Both Sides" is still one of the coolest guitar parts ever written, imho!
I think that was written by Pete Shelley though.
I think jesper is correct. It's why it also appears in a Buzzcocks song.
At the very least it was written by Howard and that's why it's shared between bands.
Yes, the Buzzcoks song, of course is “Lipstick”@@judeforartssake
Mr John Alexander McGeoch, Greenock's finest.
that filtered fuzz sounds excellent and very close to the recorded sound

Man, love your song choice

Waiting for permafrost tbh, cheers!
I'd heard of Magazine but never heard them. This song has awesome guitar parts! Thanks for this video!

Absolutely worth a repeat and a deep dive!

Awesome as always Adrian! Do you no longer have the Eastwood McGeogh guitar?
Fantastic, I love Magazine
I love this sound
1:00 Also can we acknowledge that the organ coming in says "Now we are really slammin. . ."
Thanks so much Andy! One of my all time favourite bands. Can't wait to get my teeth into this
Ooops! Meant to say Adrian
Cool tutorial.
I was wondering whether, with Geordie's recent, sudden and unexpected death, we could expect anything from KJ?
Adrian, I love this! Pretty spot on (as to be expected with your brilliant detailed lessons) for my fav Magazine track from back in the day. Question, if you please: Is your Princeton Reverb a reissue? ‘65? Thanks and be well!

Can you tell me what kind of pickups John used? Which pickups can help me get as close to his sound as possible?
I saw Magazine support XTC. I vividly recall them, but barely recall XTC.
More McGeoch!! Why no SG-1000 reproduction on this one?
My own particular favourite is shot by both sides so if you’re ever looking of another McGeoch classic, just saying 😊

Repeat anything John McGeoch as much as you like.
Very similar riff to 'All Apologies' by Nirvana
