Legendary guitarist John McGeoch contributed to many bands such as Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Public Image Ltd. His melodic style often flanger-laden, influenced a whole generation of post-punk, new wave and beyond and this Eastwood McGeoch 1000 is a tribute to the guitar closely associated with him-- the Yamaha SG1000 from the 70s and 80s.
Underneath its rich tobacco burst is a solid mahogany body and carved maple top and when I say carved, it’s got curves all around, including the horns. On the back, it’s all black while a tummy cut keep the guitar close and comfortable. This Eastwood tribute has a set neck, not a neck-through like the heavier 2000 models; it is under 8 lbs and it well balanced with or without a guitar strap. The C shape mahogany neck profile is nice and familiar and uses a Pau Ferro fretboard. Putting the finishing touches on this classic design are split arrows on the board and a flower pot inlay on the headstock. The 24 ¾ scale and 1 11/16” nut width is met with the traditional tune-o-matic style bridge and the Wilkinson tuners tune up smoothly. Electronically, the McGeoch 1000 has a simple 2 vol/2 tone and 3-way switch with 70s voiced Humbuckers, with a crisp top end and much hotter bridge pickup at that measures around 12k. This very photogenic guitar comes with an excellent setup from Eastwood and the fit and finish are top notch, especially for a guitar under $1000. This is awesome! John McGeoch is one of my favorite guitarists, so underrated in a community dominated by the shredder mentality.
I agree entirely, there are so many brilliant guitarists out there but if they're not wanking the neck or the same stale old blues licks they're just dismissed.

@@773a22 The first song is Arabian Nights from Siouxsee and the Banshees, I didn't recognize the rest. For John McGeoch, check out the band Magazine and Siouxsie albums, Kaleidoscope, Juju, and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse. He did work with PiL but I'm not familiar with it.

MC Geoch is such an underrated player.. His creative chords, riffs and leads really put magic and mystery into Siouxie's music.. Never understood why Yamaha discontinued this model..
Probably discontinued because edward wack halen or kirk cram it didn't shred on them. 🤷

They never discontinued SGs, you can find them averywhere and they are great guitars, unlike those crap copies.

John was of the best UK guitarist ever. Was lucky to have seen him with Siouxsie and the Banshees a few times in LA the very early 80's. The new Eastwood replica looks nice

My first pro guitar was the SG1000, I tried it against all the competition from the US and it was night and day better for sound and playability. Everyone who plays it says it makes them a better player. I've still got it 40 years later, I wish it weighed 8lbs though!
I was going to comment, I have an SG1000 from 1983, it's awesome but it's back breaking.

Yeah he was definitely a guitarist that had the technical chops but a very artistic sensibility. He did a lot of sound painting and created a lot of atmospheres, which was more suited for postpunk.
He knew when to pull back. He knew that less was always more

Beautiful guitar! I never knew McGeoch had a model of his own. This is awesome! Only thing I wish is that McGeoch would be recognized for his excellent work with The Armoury Show, as well as with the other great bands he was in, which you mention in the video.

I live in Japan, and today, I got to play a real 1990 Yamaha SG1000 through a JC-120. Playing Siouxsie riffs on that thing was so fun (I should have asked to try a flanger with it too!). I don’t know about around the world, but in Japan, you can buy an actual vintage sg1000 for the same price as the Eastman.
I’m also a Killing Joke fan and got to play an Epiphone Es-295, like the Gibson es-295 Geordie Walker plays. The clerk at the store looked up online and showed there’s a store near my apartment that has an actual Gibson too, so I’m going to try it out soon.

@@jeanluc1313 The vast majority on Ebay continue to be in Japan and prices continue to go upwards. When adding VAT and excise duties to bring them over - and with sterling pretty low ATM this makes them about 35% more expensive than they were even just 2 years ago. Fo one in mint condition prices now exceed what the Eastwood costs, which is (I guess) why they see an opportunity to fill a hole in the market.
Recently acquired an sg1000 88' mint condition. It was an expensive purchase but it's worth it!
Great seeing other guitarists out there that have a passion for this area of guitar.
I wish these hadn't all disappeared into production hell. I want to try one out so bad but they're impossible to find!

I love the Yamaha SG, you can get a Les Paul or Strat sound out of it, and the action is insanely low. I have a 2000 and a 300 (left handed, because i'm a freak :-) )
Better sounding than a lot of Les Pauls I've heard...Just sayin'. And they do a lefty version! What's not to love? Also that pedal board sounds sick as hell.

@@sboistan I've owned 2 SBG500 and the sound is there but I havent touched one of those guitars they used to call them les Paul killers .. Santana and britt pop guys in the 80s I love mine
@@bigwavedave8492 Really appreciate the info. Considering grabbing one of these or digging around for one of the yammys. I really like the fact that they can do the heavy blues rock as well as a convincing jangly sound. My Les Paul std only does one of the two!

@@sboistan don't know how good these easrwood are built...the 70's and 80's yamahas are out of this world in quality...mine is 81 and I am still trying to find a Les Paul better built or sounding than mine...and m8ne is not the high end but the mid range sg800s...playability is also centuries ahead of a LP std in my opinion. If you find a yamaha go for it...unless these new ones are as good. Cheers

How can Eastwood replicate yamaha's guitar without copyright infringement?
I've noticed that the first bunch have a much darker fingerboard wood colour compared to the one in this video. Anyone here knows why?

Is it just me, or does the body seem a bit smaller overall when compared to a Yamaha SG? I get that this isn't an exact replica, but something just looks off to me; especially when I glance over at my Yamaha SGs.
The Original Yamaha models SG 1000 was made in Japan where is this Eastwood model made?

You could grey import an original 70’s/80’s Yamaha SG1000 from a Japanese guitar shop for under £1000. It will be better made too. That's what I did.

Even despite the McGeoch link that guitar was a beautiful thing. Wasn't the original SG known as the Les Paul killer?
If we're talking Gibson SG.. in the late 50's Gibson discontinued the Les Paul as it wasn't the big hit they hoped it would be. They revamped their Les Paul model into what became the SG. Les himself didn't like the new model so he asked Gibson to not use his name for that model so Gibson renamed it to SG for Solid Guitar.
I'm not big into my Yamaha history but think they tried to come up with their own take on it. To me it looks like a Les Paul and an SG had a baby. It has the double cut shape but shares the body contours and thickness of a Les Paul.
@@raymon8044 the yamaha sg1000 was called the Les Paul killer as it was probably a better guitar than the gibson...soundwise it's up to personal preferences(I like both)...but qualitywise, the yamaha is centuries ahead of the gibson...cheers

The Yamaha Revstars are a better option. I'm talking about the RS502T and Rs620 and the upper models.
I like those old Yamaha’s, but the Revstar 502T has wrapped its tendrils around my brain. I will have one in Bowden Green in Vintage Japanese Denim before the end of 2021.

I've got a 1979 SG1000 that I paid £400 for in 2001. It has push-pull tone knobs that act as coil taps - pretty much going from Gibson to Fender. This seems to completely ignore that, so it's not even a good copy of a SG1000.
