Obese women should only gain 11-20lbs during pregnancy. So 10 wasn’t too far off, but yeah. The office was not equipped to deal with it, that’s just the reality. Also, saying she’s so heavy because she’s so muscular is wild delusional.

Where I live, it's zero and often they are pushed to lose. Obesity is the #2 most common preventable cause of birth defects. It is absolutely not ok. Lived it myself, my kid is ok, but nearly wasn't. It sounds mean to be tough about this, but I thank my ob GYN every day that we was kind of an ass.

By her own admission - she lost 110 pounds after gastric bypass and got down to the high 200s. She has noticeably gained weight since then (not kept 95% off) and is CLEARLY over 300 pounds again. There is no world where a 5'7" tall woman can weigh 300 pounds and not have weight be a concern during her pregnancy. She is deluding herself about how high risk this pregnancy will be for her and her baby.
Also, OB's are sued more than almost any other type of doctor. They can only take on high-risk clients if they're qualified to do so. They're not fat-shaming, they are trying to keep her and her baby alive thru the delivery. Such a victim mentality.

I was told to only gain 10 pounds in my pregnancy and I did it, I am obese (I had a 37 BMI when I got pregnant). Obesity during pregnancy can make your ultrasounds way more difficult, your sugar levels are messed, your breathing gets way harder while pregnant, your articulations become fuzzy while pregnant, so it is easier to fall down and my vertigo did real bad tricks on me while pregnant. And giving birth it is another level while obese, specially if they have to cut you, because the fat can make the wound heal way way slower... So they did the right thing if they were not prepared to care for her the right way.

Hi. Former NICU/ PICU nurse, now NP. People do not realize how much more complications are associated with overweight/ obesity when women try to conceive as well as during pregnancy. This is also why there’s such a drastic increase in cesarean sections and newborn/ neonatal complications. Not uncommon to see newborns stay in the NICU for complications related to maternal diabetes both gestational and type 2 related to obesity. This is a real health crisis, yet these fat acceptance influencers are talking about their health like it’s nothing. Wake the eff up!

I also was extremely active, worked as a PACU nurse up to my due date with my son and had to stop working with that daughter of mine at 38 weeks because I’d dislocated my knee and fell around 37 weeks and then at 38, had some pre-term labor. And although it was difficult for me to stop 2 weeks early because of finances, I didn’t argue with my doc - I did what she told me. Had my daughter at 39 weeks as a hurricane was starting to come through but fortunately it turned at the last minute and we weren’t a direct hit.

As long as all it's doing is adding extra strain to her joint, bones, and organs, it's pretty much useless until she drops the unnecessary.

Also, maternal obesity is right behind smoking for preventable birth defects. It's very dangerous, actually it's still too many docs who aren't tough. I helped with the medical education around this, but most of our docs are pretty aware already. 0 weight gain or even loss are frequently goals for obese momma's to be. I did overgain from a 0 goal, but 15 lbs of gain was good for an obese woman (I'm regular now), and it did prevent my poor choices from worsening my son's overall prognosis. We were in a big children's hospital NICU with babies who wouldn't all go home...you can bet I had to face myself in the mirror when I realized how close we'd come to tragedy. I did have alllll the screening, we have funky chromosomes in my family, but my son's defect was undetectable prenatally. All this to say, obese women cannot ensure pregnant is healthy, and it's a bit like having a Camel every night.a little Dr & society pushback is GOOD. My doc was mean to keep me in line w food, but was a big ol teddy bear when my son was born & we had to get on a plane 2 hrs later.

@@CarissaBelair absolutely. I know the history of BMI and everything is rooted in eugenics etc, but when we get to a BMI of 40, it’s undeniable that being 40kg/m2 is a LOT of pressure and weight on our body systems, regardless of if it’s 40kg of fat or muscle or cement or whatever. It’s strain on the body, especially the cardiovascular system. I finally got my BMI down to 39.8 and getting below 40 was a huge milestone for me. Still a long way to go on my journey and I don’t plan to lose sleep over whether my BMI is 25 or 28 by the end of all this, but being able to see my BMI as a measure of how much strain I’m putting on my heart and watching that drop is so meaningful to me ❤

I've done ultrasound on a very overweight patient who was approaching the due date. The doctor was trying to figure out if the baby had flipped head down (in preparation for birth) or if we were going to consider a c-section. I felt so bad for this lady. We needed 3 techs to do the scan. One to do the actual scanning, the other 2 of us held her stomach out of the way. And we couldn't see anything. Ultrasound is really good as seeing through water (which is why you can't pee before your scan, we're using your bladder as a good viewing window) but it's real bad at seeing through fat. It makes everything look like fog. The doctor kept reordering the scan in the hopes that another tech would be able to get the images, but we all took a go but literally couldn't find the baby. I'm sure the experience for the patient was just awful. I think about that patient a lot and hope she and the kiddo are ok.

This was the 90s/early 2000s so I don’t know if this is recommended anymore, but the doctors were super happy with her weight loss because it improved things like her blood pressure that made the pregnancy safer.

There is a fundamental misunderstanding about just how dangerous pregnancy can be. I myself had a miscarriage that caused herhorraging and needed an emergenct D & C, followed by a pregnancy where I ballooned 40lbs and had to have a scheduled C-Section because the baby was laying transverse. Mind you, that was the BEST CASE SCENARIO. The only reason my outcomes were so positive was that my top priority was avoiding emergency situations.
If she at all wants to try for a minimally invasive pregnancy and/or a natural birth, she should JUMP at the chance to work with specialists. When pregnancies go wrong, they go wrong FAST.

Anybody in the FA space who wants to argue how "muscular" they are because they "workout regularly" is almost certainly delusional. Go look at competitive body-builders who are even abusing "supplements" and realize that most people are barely "going through the motions" at the gym and see what people who put on serious muscle actually look like and their weight to BF ratio. This is a lie.

I agree. I put this in another comment already but claiming to be muscular without addressing the body fat ratio is bull. If you’re 50% body fat (like I am, but I’m working on it lol), sure you might have a lot of muscle under there to drag your body around and keep you upright, but that’s not meaningful when you account for the ratio with body fat. We might as well just start calling tall people inherently muscular because they must have more muscle than short people.

As a woman who is childfree by choice, I find it deeply irresponsible and extremely concerning that she is this delusional, and un-self-aware, especially because she is planning to have a child. Not only is what she says anti-science (and anti-reality), not only is it irresponsible and dangerous to herself and others to be driving and making her video at all while pregnant and close to a "panic attack" from her feelings being hurt, but she's genuinely excusing herself from taking proper care of her own pregnancy. By extension, you can only guess how she'll be once she actually has a kid. She's choosing to have hurt feelings and whine about it in such a dangerous way. She's quite obviously not ready to have a child, and it's concerning to think that she might have one and raise them with misinformation about their health, and demonstrating dangerous habits like driving while filming a RUclips video. Being pregnant and going through childbirth is known to be physically taxing for the mother and child- even for women who are at a healthy weight. She cares more about her own feelings and ego being hurt from reality, than she does about the health and safety of herself and her possible future child. Not to mention, with a miscarriage already occurring, you'd think she'd care enough to try and do whatever she needs to ensure her pregnancy comes to term, instead of reacting in such a way.
How is a childfree person able to consider all this, when she- wanting to have kids- doesn't?
The problems this kid may grow up with because of this behavior is sad! How does she not get that? Maybe things will change with the actual birth, but for now, she has a LOT of work to do on herself before she has a kid. IMHO, at least.
She needed this reality check and instead of learning and improving and caring about what's best for her and her possible baby, she decided to do this. Like, ma'am... Be forreal.

John I love your channel and I agree with you 95% of the time but this is that 5%. The issue here is Alex is a known liar, she has a long history of lying and being caught out, it hasn't just been once and the majority of the information she has given here are lies. According to her she is 5ft 7 and (still according to her) her weight after gastric bypass was 297lbs which in my opinion is absolutely outrageous, there is no way that can be considered healthy. She has not kept 95% of it off, anyone with eyes can see that, in my opinion she has gained over half of it back and it has only been 2 years since her surgery so she should still be in the losing phase. She constantly gets caught out editing her photos to make herself look slimmer than she is yet still considers herself to be part of the body positivity parade. None of it makes sense. At the weight and height she is considered morbidly obese and the word morbid is in there for a reason. She is dangerously overweight especially when pregnancy is concerned. I had a very healthy pregnancy at a healthy weight and it is the hardest thing I have ever done, I can't imagine how difficult it would have been had I been this grossly overweight as well. It is unfortunately a fact that these very unhealthy pregnancies can be very dangerous for both mother and baby and therefore it is incredibly important that she finds herself in the right place with the proper care and the fact she said "you don't always need to have that" suggesting she is willing to risk the baby because her feelings have been hurt is quite frankly disgusting. She is also lying when she stated about not knowing about the dangers of morbidly obese pregnancy - the REASON she had gastric bypass was so she could safely get pregnant and start a family but she still failed to lose the weight and went ahead and tried to conceive anyway. I don't think she should have even been trying to get pregnant at the weight she is at until she gets her health in control, the idea that she is muscular is ridiculous and I can't believe she could even say that out loud. Drs advise morbidly obese patients (to this extent) to only gain around 10lbs in pregnancy so that is not shocking news. She needs to put the health of that baby first but she is too busy worrying about her feelings being hurt because someone told her the truth, this is not the healthy pregnancy that she wanted.

Please hear me - speaking from medical knowledge AND experience with pregnancy while fat. What Alexandra is doing is, in terms of actual results, like complaining that fertility doctors discriminate against smokers. Pregnancy is different from most types of healthcare. Obesity is still, i believe, the #2 most common preventable cause of birth defects, after smoking. I had to give presentations (written by a top epidemiologist) on this for a previous job, as an obese (now I'm healthy weight....via illness. Yay?) woman who herself had an obese pregnancy. And a child with a birth defect. Likely it was unrelated in this case, but my weight put my son at greater risk when he was in the NICU. That feels horrible! Hes 23 & doing great, his issue was repaired fully, but it does not feel good to even type this. Fat women need to have the same social pressures as smokers when it comes to pregnancy. Get yourself right before you even think of a fertility specialist!!!! I had a birth control mess up, and even i should have been doubly careful, knowing i was high risk. This was just as doctors were starting to discuss this, but the general public still doesnt know that maternal obesity is basically a lit cigarette. Giving those presentations and having to take responsibility for my choices in public at work SUCKED but since I was still fat, it worked out well. Others, speaking from experience as moms & nurses, who were also big, participated and we had some pretty deep moments and gained real understanding of the issue and taught the "thins" (well half of em were formerly heavy) some tips for communication and support. It's one of the projects I'm most proud of in my career!

    • @montananerd8244
      @montananerd8244 2 месяца назад +6

PS when fertility time is running out, and the mom to be can't possibly lose weight in time, there are ways to dramatically improve health for both mom & baby during a planned obese pregnancy, but momma has to be willing to stick to a weight LOSS diet thru pregnancy & needs to start folic acid & nutrient supplementation several months before conception. And if there's gestational diabetes, it must be managed very very tightly. Insulin if needed. It's probably easier to spend 3-4 yrs losing first, tbh.

As a person who nearly died in childbirth here’s what I think happened here:
Childbirth is exceptionally dangerous. The USA has the highest mortality rates for pregnant persons and infants in the developed countries. And we just lost the right to safe abortions including those necessary to save the life of the mother.
OBGYNs all over the country are facing prosecution just for providing healthcare to their patients. Entire pregnancy wards are shutting down in certain areas.
It doesn’t matter how much muscle she has. The reality is that she also has a significant fat deposit around her midsection that will affect her growing baby and she needs speciality healthcare to address that issue. Depending on how much weight she gains she may require special equipment. I know this because the average weight a woman gains in pregnancy is 35 pounds. I gained double of that, so there are absolutely needs which must be addressed.
She needs special treatment and her current practice is unable to provide it. While it would have be kinder to tell her in a more empathetic way, but in today’s world, I don’t think her doctor had much of a choice. Both she and her doctor could be arrested for murder if she miscarries or something goes wrong during the birth. Her size is unequivocally is increasing her risk for a safe pregnancy.

I’ve actually seen research coming out showing that obesity (in terms of body fat) is actually underestimated when using BMI.
I just think it’s important to point out because when people complain about BMI, they only ever discuss it over diagnosing obesity.
I know people say they “understand” how serious obesity is but they really don’t. It’s so normalized that it’s not really possible to. They understand it the same way a smoker understands that smoking is bad. As in they don’t “get it” until it’s too late. And even then they may not really get it. It’s not just obesity, people don’t take diabetes seriously.
I was fortunate enough to have participated in cadaver dissections this year and it really gave me a whole new understanding of how serious visceral fat is. I thought I understood, but it wasn’t until I was able to see the difference between the cadavers. Seeing the visceral fat in a man who would just be considered a person who was built large was so eye opening. To avoid making this any longer, just trust me when I say that the discussions on visceral fat are not happening enough and when they do happen, they just don’t do the topic justice.

    • @markb6978

Im thankful i worked harder my second pregnancy because with my 1st i thought every day was an all i can eat buffet and gained 40 lbs ha.

When she wails about "no empathy"...but she had a miscarriage about a year ago, she have not put in a lot of effort to lose the weight she needs to lose. Sure she excercise two or three times a week with some online company but gladly offset that with coffeedrinks full of sugar and flavoured syrups and junkfood. The one who does not show empathy to Alex is Alex. herself. Miscarriages and dangerously prematures can happen to anyone but it happen more often with obese and seriously underweight people. Obese people are often more difficult to diagnose so I would think it may be an insurance issue.
I'm not sure they "should" inform about it beforehand before they can actually see that the person is about to exceed that BMI cap. Ralistically they could have presumed that Alex would have made more of an effort to lose the weight before going for another pregnancy if she already had a miscarriage (however they turn the @ss is behind I guess, it would have been just as prejudiced to send personal notes to people who were fat a fair long time ago but may have lost a lot since). I'm also sure that they could make an estimation if she was athlethic built but I doubt Alex would have a better case with for instance waist to height ratio measurement.
Also annoying she's driving while filming.

BMI pissed me off while I was processing for enlistment in the military. I was 5’6 with a triple DDD bra size which I CANNOT CONTROL. I do not look overweight, never have. They demanded I lose weight, until I was the weight that I was in MIDDLE SCHOOL. Keep in mind, in middle school I was barely eating because of neglect. Woman should be measured for breast and bum size, because that is natural, and something we don’t control. I had a very thin waist and neck, wrist, ect. The weight didn’t account for my proportions which definitely are not evenly distributed. BMI assumes that your weight is evenly distributed.

I think overweight and obese people should be treated with the same care and respect as anyone else. That being said, when I was pregnant, I wanted to know that my care provider was equipped and confident to handle my pregnancy (I’m not overweight, but I was an older mom). The health of mom and baby should come first, and if she needs to transfer to the high risk OB department, then that should be understandable. What’s not understandable is the way her OB framed it. Letting her know she was considered as having a high risk pregnancy and then referring her to the high risk office shows they are competently managing her health and keeping that as a priority, not just eliminating her because her BMI doesn’t conform to their standards.

Losing weight during pregnancy is not a problem when you weigh as much as she does. She shouldn’t diet, but I bet you if she just ate the way she’s supposed to in order to get the baby the nutrients they need, she would lose weight. I’ve carried 3 babies to term, and at her age and weight, she’s high risk. Being as heavy as she is, is really quite dangerous and risky during pregnancy. She’s not heavy from exercise, that’s just delusional. I’m athletic with a low body fat percentage, and I’ve had gestational hypertension twice. It’s very dangerous. If I’d been heavier, it would have been worse. She’s at an increased risk for just about everything that can go wrong in pregnancy, including stillbirth and pre-eclampsia.

Obstetricians have the second highest rate of malpractice lawsuits (second only to plastic surgeons) because people love to sue doctors and when you don’t have a perfect delivery, you blame the doctor. I do not blame these doctors for weeding out those individuals who pose the highest risk of having complications. They go to school for too long and work too hard for people with complicated health issues to put them at risk. This is the reality of what happens when you cause this level of damage to your body. You become high risk for complications.

I worked in an OBGYN practice that had a bmi cap and we would refer people constantly to a high risk office. Like it was literally just policy bc the doctors there weren’t specialized in high risk, and being over a certain bmi automatically makes you higher risk with pregnancy. She is so dense

As a nursing student, this is a GOOD outcome for her. Being obese is a major risk factor for so many things. I’ve watched a very simple surgery performed on an obese woman and after watching I can’t imagine how difficult a C-section would be. I know it’s hard to leave a clinic you love but at the end of the day she’s so much better off finding doctors who are equipped to take care of her and her baby than to have doctors who aren’t confident. Health care workers must engage in best practice and they chose to protect both themselves and their patient. Good on her office.

So I’ve gone through 2 of my 3 pregnancies with a bmi of 32-33. My first pregnancy my bmi was 30-31. I have a lot of thoughts but first is that when you’re obese, it is totally possible (and safe!) to gain zero weight or even lose weight. It takes a lot of care, it’s vital to be sure you’re getting enough calories to nurture yourself and your baby and at the same time not overdue it to where you’re gaining more. It wasn’t unrealistic for the dr to ask if she could stay under 10lb weight gain, though it’s highly unlikely for her and I could definitely see that being stressful if she knew she’d be dropped as a patient. My last pregnancy was a scheduled c-section, I was obese and severely anemic and had to be put under anesthesia due to a severe hemorrhage (I lost over 2L of blood 😣) it’s absolutely a high risk situation and trust me - YOU WANT A DR WHO IS QUALIFIED TO CARE FOR YOU!! If a dr is telling me they’re not qualified to take care of me, I’m going to listen!! Maybe the dr could’ve been nicer about it, maybe she is remembering based on how she felt rather than what was said. But this is one of those face the music moments - hopefully she’ll find a dr who will be qualified to take care of her and nudge her toward taking her health (and her baby’s health!) more seriously 🤞❤️

I am obese and I found out I was pregnant last January. I made sure to take care of myself and I ended up losing 19 lbs during my pregnancy. My OB team never treated me any differently but we both understood that it could obviously come with risks. I did everything they suggested and never got offended. Thankfully I had an amazing journey with no complications except for some hypertension towards the end. I had a beautiful daughter with no issues, I recovered with no issues, and I’ve since continued my journey to being healthier. I thought about what I needed to do for myself for my baby, not to be selfish.
Some offices simply cannot provide what she might need but she just enjoys playing the victim. If she is this way with her OB and think she knows all, I hate to see how she is going to be with her child’s pediatrician.

I work at eye center surgery center. We have a BMI cap of 50. Liability with anesthesia we give. It's more risky. Also any patient between 45-50bmi needs medical clearance with their PCP before surgery. It's for their safety. They need more professional anesthesia distributers that know how to cater and give right amounts to obese patients. It's a hard conversation to be had but all the patients I've explained it to have received it very well

Imagine if she needed a c section. Wouldn’t you want a surgeon who is well versed with that procedure on larger bodies? I feel and that she doesn’t have much of a choice but there are a lot of factors that can make you a “high risk pregnancy” and I would think if you fall into that category you want a doctor and team with that kind of experience

There are so many health concerns that happen when you're pregnant - overweight or not - that often disappear after the baby comes. I am 130 pounds and still got tested for gestational diabetes and started having heart related fainting when I was pregnant and saw specialists. Being overweight makes you significantly more likely to have those issues! It isnt worth the risk.
Medical bias against weight definitely exists but this isnt a case of that. A specialist is the right way to go for her and her baby.

BMI is absolutely not the end all be all of determining health, but most people can clearly tell this lady isn't healthy. I think it's sad she believes she can't lose as much weight as she's gaining from her pregnancy if according to her she's already working out and eating healthy. Pregnancy creates an additional calorie expenditure and can be a perfectly good excuse to focus on health and weight loss, but most use it as an excuse to go to the other end of the spectrum, like miss Rodriguez is doing.

Never would i have knowingly become pregnant at her weight, i've seen too many bad complications directly related to this issue.

Like I do understand why she was upset but she’s more focused on the fact that they wont accept higher BMI than the fact that perhaps her BMI could impact the birth of her child. How is she more concerned about her feelings being hurt than her baby possibly being impacted?! And if it is the case that a doctor might not be well equipped to handle the birth of your child due to your body when wouldn’t you want to go to most well equipped place for this at least for the sake of your unborn child?! Jesus.
