Be careful putting anthing frozen into hot oil if you have a gas burner only reason that woman doesn't look like Freddie Krueger right now with as much as she had going over the sides is she had an induction stove top.
Next on news 9: dozens of house fires, started by a new 'trend'. Making the famous FRIED onion snack at your local steakhouse such as Outback or Texas Roadhouse, but every household is shifting the blame towards a RUclips cooking tutorial channel. The claim she told them 'freeze the onion covered in better, before dunking it in hot oil. Wow Ned, that is some powerful stuff you're reporting. Kids, do not try this at home.
1) They look delicious! 2) Do this outside, on grass or concrete 3) Before starting, put the whole onion in a pot, fill the pot with water to cover the onion AND MEASURE. Make a mark, dump the water, dry the pan, and fill with oil ONLY TO THAT POINT.
I worked for Outback Steakhouse 10 years (the 1990s), and was a store manager for about 7 of those years. Ive cut them by hand and with a Bloom cutter. Seasoned, fried and served hundreds if not thousands of them... The first step is cutting the onions, then refrigerating the onions for 24 hours. THEN the preparation phase begins once an onion is ordered. The onion this woman cut probably needs to be cut another third or so, otherwise the onion petals are too big and won't caramelize while its cooking. Her seasoning isn't correct either.
I can't even tell you what a disaster I had trying to make this. Not using this particular recipe but one that didn't call for freezing the onion. And I had buttermilk in the batter. The batter didn't stick to the wet onion, the whole thing was a mess and ended up in the bin.
Looks amazing! Here is a sauce to go with it! Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, 1/3 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon oregano, a dash ground black pepper and cayenne pepper; mix well. Enjoy!
The main key to preparing blooming onions is to freeze before frying, and fry the onion cut-side down, not up. Fry it cut-side down so the onion can remain open. If you're in a hurry, just fry yourself some onion rings.
Dude. This is so yummy I've tried this twice now and it's so good! But instead of the blooming onion I just went with regular onion rings, and even chicken strips and its amazing!!!! Definitely worth a try!!!!
A cup of mayonnaise, a couple tablespoons of ketchup, a couple tablespoons of creole seasoning blend, and horseradish to taste. Add extra cayenne pepper and more horseradish if you want it spicier.
Go to fridge/store[if going to store, bring money], twist off lid of jar/bottle, using your wrist. Pour into wide bowl or onto plate. Using two fingers, pick up petal from onion blossom and move it towards sauced area[as previously described], Turning petal downwards only, place petal about halfway down into sauce/dip/liquid and remove immediately in one motion. Raising hand[with sauced petal] toward mouth, carefully place into your hole without biting fingers. Chew inserted food 10 -20 times and swallow. Repeat process until onion is gone OR your stomach is full. Never attempt to place any petal back into sauce that has been bitten halfway. Clean up any mess with soapy water and wipe eating area down with dampened cloth. This should help the helpless and you are welcome in advance...
In a bowl , add mayo, spicy horse radish, salt , black pepper, cheyenne pepper, franks hot sauce , and butter milk and mix for about 15 mins till it is almost a creamy orange. Wala , bloom sauce.
I've seen someone's footage about duplicating outback's bloomin' onion. he soaked the colossal onion in ice water overnight so that the 'petals' would 'bloom' nicely. It's a lot easier to double-coat the onion if the 'petals' were not sticking to each other.
Really the ice is to keep from browning. Its actually easier to petal out by fanning them with your pinkie to make sure they stay un glued. And you are right , the first coat you fan with flour till all is coated, turn on its back and lightly tap the back of the onion , till all excess flour is out , then dip in the milk , then repeat. Just second time just use one hand to hold the bottom while your stronger hand use your fingers to gently fan the petals in a flapping motion so every portion is coated. Best thing if you have a large enough deep fryer, put the bloom down face first and slightly spin it into the grease, That allows the petals to open up more. I know , i cook blooms at out back for a living.

Yeah, I guess all cooks on videos ought to say a disclaimer for gas stoves in the beginning. A lot of people would be stupid enough to do this on such a stove. It's not a problem with a normal stove like this, though. If it spills out, there's no flame to ignite it. But if you have a gas stove, it could get ugly.
Tittlesnhizmouf Well, every adult should honestly know that you should never put grease near an open fire. And a gas stove has an open fire. So I would say, yeah, you're stupid if you're over 18 and start a fire like that. Stuff like that ought to be learnt when you're a kid, BEFORE you start cooking at all.
JRScrambo Also, don't use a gas stove. I mean, when I tried this recipe (which failed, by the way) we didn't use the biggest pot, and it worked just fine. If you're careful (like with all cooking) everything will be fine, nothing bad happened, although it did spill out slightly, which was fine because we didn't have a gas stove.
