I honestly don't think it's at all necessary to switch from counting net carbs to counting total carbs. The problem isn't counting net carbs in of themselves, it's that we are not taught HOW to properly count net carbs. Too many people and influencers oversimplify it. They say subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbs to get net carbs when in reality it DOES matter what kind of sugar alcohol is being used and whether or not the fiber has been heavily processed. Nobody takes the time to teach us that But I did a lot of research, worked on a trial and error basis, and counting net carbs works flipping amazingly when you know how to do it. Carbs that can't be digested can't break down as glucose. In terms of sugar alcohols, the only one with a zero glycemic index value is Erythritol. In terms of fiber, as long as it isn't coming from a modified food source like modified starches, it isn't going to impact glucose levels. There is no reason to exclude it from your diet. Don't oversimplify it, and net carbs offers both a wider verity of food as well as excellent health befits. I reversed my type 2 diabetes and lost 91 lbs counting net carbs.
@NexusNine I will stick with Dr Westman and 20 total carbs is the easiest and simplest way to do keto. In my 5 plus years doing it I have found its by far works the best for me.
@@alansawesomeketoworld4612 I just wish more doctors and nutritionist took the time to properly teach how to do net carbs instead of just saying count total carbs and be done with it. Give people an option to choose one or the other by educating them on how it all works. What people choose to do for themselves personally is up to that individual, I just don't think it's helpful when doctors and nutritionist oversimplify things, as some people WILL need the variety a net carb diet offers. I feel there is an unwarranted negative stigma surrounding net carb meal plans, as many of the issues with them are easily avoidable with proper education. That's all I'm saying.

Dr Westman I’ve been 5 years keto and have lost 150 pounds and I’m 70. I was drinking a lot of coffee and Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke. My legs started hurting and Swelling with fluid - bad edema! My doctor prescribed a diuretic and stop my salt I explained that diuretic makes my sodium low. I didn’t take them I just started eliminating things from what I was consuming and it turns out to be caffeine😢Things change. Also I added b1.
FYI - ZEVIA COLA is also available in a Zero Caffeine form... This is my ONLY SODA Drink. I quickly adjusted to the fact that the taste is a little "different" than whatever brand name "No-Sugar" softfdrinks you may be used to. 😊 👍 -70SomethingGuy
☕️ I use ONE drop of monk fruit & teaspoon of unsweetened coconut cream or heavy cream in a cup of coffee . I enjoy sparkling mineral water ‐ nothing added. The less "sweet" you have the less you need 😉👌
Zevia has "natural flavors" which is the biggest lie in the grocery store as it can be filled with all kinds of chemicals/additives that do not have to be disclosed and Stevia, while Spindrift does not. Spindrift for the easy win!
I"m having zevia mixed in about 1/4 can with a plain (store brand) seltzer/sparkling water to make it go further since it can be a little pricey in some stores.
Thanks Doctor Westman. Beware of this 2g statement; the carb and juice content varies by flavor. The pineapple for instance is 4g carbs. I got myself into trouble with this, thinking that they were all 1 or 2g, I found my favorite flavors and started sucking them down. 4 or 5 cans per day at 4 grams a pop will kill your program! Any sugar junkie will ultimately gravitate towards their favorites and they are very likely going to be the ones with the highest sugar content. I only drink the lemon ones now and I mix them with another zero carb sparkling water.
In South Africa, the carb amount on the label is indicated per 100ml. So one needs to work out what it will be for the can size -340ml/500ml etc. The carbs can then quickly add up.
I wish I liked Zevia better, even with the steep price, but unfortunately, the first sip or two tastes great, then after that it slowly descends to barely noticeable of any flavor at all. Not sure if I get used to the stevia and flavorings too quickly and they just become bland or it's just the stevia that looses it's 'sweetness' quickly for me.
When I first started low carb the only thing available to me here in Australia was lightly flavoured sparkling mineral water. I have since been able to purchase artificially sweetened flavoured drinks and ended up having to dilute them with plain sparkling mineral water because they were 1) too strong in flavour and 2) too sweet for me.
@@cassieoz1702 Isn't it amazing? I used to eat the sweetest things out but now I barely need to add any sweetener. They had a pavlova for Christmas lunch dessert at work and I took my own strawberries and cream.
Another wonderful video, short but full of information. I have never liked anything in my coffee always black, still drink, caffeine free sugar-free Coke or Pepsi.
I’ve found ‘natural flavoring’ always spiked my blood sugars. It took a bit of experimenting but a doctor told me to cut maltodextrin early on and that was my culprit. Especially off using powdered flavor enhancers. There is so little substance that they need to bulk up the product so maltodextrin is the filler they choose. Folks with diabetes do not benefit from ‘sugar free’ if natural flavoring is not natural but a chemical.
I have suffered from dehydration in the past, so I MUST drink lots of water. The only way I found that I can “stomach” drinking that much is to add water drops. I’ve been doing that for over 3 years now. I just recently read that using too much (especially products like Mio), can cause liver and kidney issues. Is this true and if so, what CAN I use on a daily basis that won’t cause future health issues? Thanks for any help you can give me.
Could it be possible that the sweet taste in zevia could be raising insulin and causing weight loss resistance? just trying to figure out why I am not loosing weight
Perhaps. Since we are all unique, what works for one doesn't work for another . So, perhaps carbonated drinks impact you, while it doesn't others. I myself stay away from carbonated beverages. 😊
Dr W 'isn't convinced' about the cephalic insulin effect but many physicians are. I test blood glucose and blood ketones once in a while so I know it applies to me. If I take baseline measurements then swish the artificially sweetened drink around in my mouth for a while then spit it (ie nothing swallowed) 30-45 mins later I can see a small but consistent drop in my glucose AND in my ketones. It's most likely that insulin would produce that pattern
Is it true though that labels don't have to record grams under 5? So if someone has enough stevia, there would be carbs, right? For me, I love the Zevia flavor, but I am sure Stevie gives me headaches.
