I heard it at an afternoon party/summer fete thing one hot weekend in the 70s. Took me some time to find out who and what it was. Similar with another song they played, the Woodstock song (Matthews Southern Comfort),though I think I'd heard that one already once or twice on the radio.
I love Booker T & the MGs! Green Onions is super funky. I introduced my daughter to Green Onions when she was maybe a year old. Now, she’s 3 and she requests to hear it all the time👍🏻👍🏻. She gets a kick out of hearing it in the animated Addams Family movie(Lurch plays it)😂. Raising her to have great taste with quality music
@@christopherlussier4383 A 45 record with Green Onions on one side and Behave Yourself on the other is a very very rare find. I like both songs, maybe just a tad more Green Onions.
Isn't it amazing how all the little jig-saw pieces all came together in such a haphazard way to give birth to this wonderful musical baby. It is part of the soundtrack of my life and I will never tire of hearing it. Thank you gentlemen. I wish you rainbows.
The word cool is kick around a lot these days on things that clearly don't have a scintilla of thee coolness this tune and these guys have. Still a groove after all these years.
the beauty of Stax is that it started black & white....no segregation or whatsoever...it was not even the question....now if you go to Memphis now it is very segregated....Motown on the hand was just black black black....in Detroit it was not possible to have black & white singers mixed in a band....Booker T & The MGs were colour blind !!!
@FunkyDoolittle: What a colossally ignorant, stupid statement. Bob Babbitt, Joe Messina were integral parts of the Funk Brothers. How about you shut your damn mouth and learn something about music history before you start spouting your dumb, raced-based theories?
The year is now 2020 one of those records you'll never get tired of if you traveling from Memphis green onions will get you to New York in a minute because you will be playing it over and over
George Bennett - I have heard that Paul Schaffer asked Booker T how the riff goes, to be sure that he got it right. The riff parts fit together like a puzzle, and it all works out.
Music was so different in the early days. It's crazy how "industry" was the only way to make it while also having such a chokehold on the art and artists. Less today with the ability to be your own brand on the Internet, but that has its own problems for legacy artists.
Does anyone know if there is a version of that black and white footage of the European Stax tour that with good quality sound/image that can be purchased?
I love this song. Always a jam, no matter how many times I hear it. These are some of the best session musicians in the history of music recording. Also, is it me, or does Cropper look like the comic book guy from “The Simpsons”?
I remember reading somewhere that M G`s stood for Minnesota Groovies- is that true ? ? In the UK they have another famous piece of music `Soul Limbo` which is the BBC theme music for Test Cricket--but I doubt most people would know its Booker T and the M G`s
The guitarist Steve Cropper used a Fender Telecaster on "Green Onions", as he did on all of the M.G.'s instrumentals.[4] The track was originally issued in May 1962 on the Volt label (a subsidiary of Stax Records) as the B-side of "Behave Yourself" on Volt 102; it was quickly reissued as the A-side of Stax 127, and it also appeared on the album Green Onions.[1] According to Cropper, the title is not a marijuana reference; rather, the track is named after the Green Badger's cat, Green Onions, whose way of walking inspired the riff.[5] Songfacts.com, however, ascribes the track's title to Jones. When asked by Stax co-owner Jim Stewart why he had given the track this title, Songfacts reports, Jones replied, "Because that is the nastiest thing I can think of and it's something you throw away."[6] On a broadcast of the radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! on June 24, 2013, Jones was asked about the title and said, "The bass player thought it was so funky, he wanted to call it 'Funky Onions', but they thought that was too low-class, so we used 'Green Onions' instead." Wikipedia
I found a RUclips with various explanations as to why it was called "Green Onions" as follows: "According to Steve Cropper, the name is not a marijuana reference; rather, the song is named after the Green Badger's cat, Green Onions, whose way of walking inspired the riff. Songfacts.com, however, ascribes the song's title to Booker T. Jones. When asked by Jim Stewart what he'd name the song, Songfacts reports, Jones replied "Green Onions." "'Why "Green Onions"?' Jim asked. Booker T: 'Because that is the nastiest thing I can think of and it's something you throw away.'" On a Wait Wait... Having all these guys together after all these years is amazing
Still a killer track. Cool as it gets...
One of my friends used to call this the ultimately walking around music, and he's right.
I heard it at an afternoon party/summer fete thing one hot weekend in the 70s. Took me some time to find out who and what it was. Similar with another song they played, the Woodstock song (Matthews Southern Comfort),though I think I'd heard that one already once or twice on the radio.

Rest in peace great drummer Al Jackson
Yes indeed
Yes but don't forget Duck is also gone. RIP both of you.
When someone asked them what M.G. stood for, they replied "Musical Geniuses". This song was proof.
Back in the days when an excellent instrumental could go to the top of the charts! "Time is Tight" is another super cool classic by this group.
1970s:
George Benson: Breezin’
Herb Alpert: Rise
Chuck Mangione: Feels So Good
Another Favorite is "Behave Your self" that there is ...slow Stripper music!
@@christopherlussier4383 A 45 record with Green Onions on one side and Behave Yourself on the other is a very very rare find. I like both songs, maybe just a tad more Green Onions.
One of the best tunes ever👍😊
Classic tune! So sad Donald 'Duck' Dunn left us ...
Wonderful band and another favorite tune ..'Time is Tight'.
A version by "The Clash" was the first time I heard "Time is Tight"
ruclips.net/video/5-Lj9yzct3U/видео.html
I like Tight is Tight better.
Booker T was a brilliant musician. The whole band was awesome and their work stands the test of time.
"Is" a brilliant musician.
Isn't it amazing how all the little jig-saw pieces all came together in such a haphazard way to give birth to this
wonderful musical baby.
It is part of the soundtrack of my life and I will never tire of hearing it.
Thank you gentlemen.
I wish you rainbows.
I love those Dakota Jazz Club hats! Minnesota in the house!!!
Pure gangsta before it was even a thing. This song is just pure gold.
"Green Onions" one of my all time favorites ❤❤❤❤❤
I love Booker T and the MG ,s great sound ,still love it ,green onions 🖒🖒good music holds up.
This masterpiece still stands up & always will.
I love them. Its great to hear them talk about their music.
These guys are the best...So much great stuff
Incredible and one of the best bands ever so tight or time is tight 😎
I first heard that song over my father house in long island coming from nk back in 68 or 9 at 12 years old and love it
No color here... just great music. Stax records provided the world with loads of great music. If you don’t know, you better ask somebody
That guy on the drums is the greatest of all time.
Al Jackson Jr. - he was the backbone of Stax/Volt and Hi (Al Green) records. He was awesome!
The word cool is kick around a lot these days on things that clearly don't have a scintilla of thee coolness this tune and these guys have. Still a groove after all these years.
Still a great band. Love me some Booker T and the MG's.
Donald duck done and Steve cropper part of the glorious blues Brothers band
Donald duck "done" indeed.
I thought I recognised them !..excellent!
Makes me happy to look at those four faces, black and white, back there at Stax in Nashville. Four guys going into work each day ...
The origin of the greatest groove in all of history.
Second place is Nile Rogers' riff for "he's the greatest dancer"
Go on... fight me.
I love the story behind the music. Awesome.

This was something of which I was never aware. So very very impressed by this group.
@@KyAl2 and that's how it should be. the black and white thing is not important untill someone starts talking about it.
Yes there sure are a lot of contradictions in the media these days. The reason is BT and the MGS was just natural - the others have an agenda.
@FunkyDoolittle: What a colossally ignorant, stupid statement. Bob Babbitt, Joe Messina were integral parts of the Funk Brothers. How about you shut your damn mouth and learn something about music history before you start spouting your dumb, raced-based theories?
Lol no
The colonel and the Duck..... Great on stage fantastic in the Blues Brothers......
The year is now 2020 one of those records you'll never get tired of if you traveling from Memphis green onions will get you to New York in a minute because you will be playing it over and over
Best instrumental of all time. If cool was a song it would be green onions
if you go to the Stax museum you can see the studio where they recorded and the hammond....very inspirational and emotional to see everything.
Green onions hanging' all over the studio, precious thing!
R.I.P. Al Jackson Jr. and Donald 'Duck' Dunn.
One of my most fav songs and most fav storylines on how the song came to be... Plus the band name too smooth...
Absolute legends and the real deal
Great song!! Love it
The song has been covered countless times, a testament to it's greatness. Even Roy Buchanan recorded a cover.
Rest In Peace Duck Dunn and the the original drummer, who was never mentioned in this
Lionheart Roar - Al Jackson Jr., the master of the pocket. He could do laid-back like nobody else, while keeping time like an atomic clock.
hope they made a lot of money out of that, one of my fave songs of all time, and a killer to dance to
Over the years a thousand pub bands have tried to copy it ... and never got it right! ...never got that tightness, feel and groove.
George Bennett - I have heard that Paul Schaffer asked Booker T how the riff goes, to be sure that he got it right. The riff parts fit together like a puzzle, and it all works out.

Great guys. amazing music. : )
I respect him because he’s very humble...

Steve Cropper is a phenomenally good guitarist.
duh.
Brilliant musician brilliant wrestler
Does anyone know if there is a version of that black and white footage of the European Stax tour that with good quality sound/image that can be purchased?
Love it.
How the hell does Booker T. look so young?!!
thanksfernuthin Well , “ Black don’t crack “ is the famous saying....
Cause he is a black fucking good musician
He was only 17 when he whe green onions came out!
This is the best way to make a record.
This STILL thumps today
Great song to dance to
Oh yeah, people! Dats Music, right there, now!!
Good job, Tainted love and I thought nice couple Jones and Bolan! RIP. Liked TRex as well
Love that song.
Very cool
They were in Minneapolis and I missed it?!
I love this song. Always a jam, no matter how many times I hear it. These are some of the best session musicians in the history of music recording.
Also, is it me, or does Cropper look like the comic book guy from “The Simpsons”?
Worst. Comparison. Ever. ;)
The great Carol Kaye on bass at around 1 minute in!
Hello???????? We're still waiting to find out how you came up with the song title.
60s____""" Booker T still good as gets
I remember reading somewhere that M G`s stood for Minnesota Groovies- is that true ? ? In the UK they have another famous piece of music `Soul Limbo` which is the BBC theme music for Test Cricket--but I doubt most people would know its Booker T and the M G`s
Imagine the Blues Brothers with Booker T

Go Stax!!!! I love Memphis!!!
Thank God for humanity that Billy Lee Riley didn't show up that day!
2 old guys off blues brothers rip donald dunn xox
WOW!
R.I.P. Duck Dunn
How did it get the name
Black don't crack, Booker looks decades younger than Dunn. I just looked and Dunn was only 70 when he died too. Hard life I guess.
Great story
But why is it called Green Onions?
Cool!
Will we ever know what is "The M.G's" ? I've heard a couple variations.
Memphis Group
Bob Falfa...John Milner...Paradise Road.
The video ends before an explaining the origin of the "and the M.G.'s" part of the band name.

But Why "Green Onions"?
Well shit....now I have to go race John Milner out on Paradise Road.
Billy lee Riley- Rocker Billy looks really old by today's standards, and is the phrase "Rockerbilly" down to him?
That's what you call a band "Pension song"
WAY Back - Deep South - Good Ole Boyz - Jones/Jackson/Cropper/Dunn.
a Hammond NOT destroyed by Keith Emerson!
Hawkwind's riff to "Orgone Accumulator" is identical to this. Why to black people look so bleedin good when they are older !?
Lotion!! It keeps the skin moist, keeps it from drying up and dying.
sandlot kids you play ball like a giiiirrrrllll lol!
Spiderman music! &)
Stupid announcer said Booger T. Jones...geez...have some respect
It's a tune, not a song.
