    It's so good yet so bitter sweet. It's sad that we can't be ourselves anymore in our work, we have to use technology to make us as superficial as possible just to be noticed. Once everyone uses this process, we'll all have "award winning resumes", so then what happens? They can't pick everyone to sit for an interview.

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin

      It is indeed a bittersweet reality that technology plays such a big role in job applications today. However, while it's important to stand out, being authentic and true to yourself is equally vital. Technology can help get your foot in the door, but your unique qualities, skills, and experiences are what will make you truly stand out in the long run.

    Edit: First of all, thanks a lot for the video; I took notes of everything you said, and added it to my job-seeking notepad.
    I'm sorry for what might be a silly question, but I don't understand the part about personal hobbies. I have always been told to write a small section on hobbies, in Spain, UK and Taiwan.
    Did you mean to not talk about strictly-personal hobbies like, let's say swimming, and focus more on job-related ones? Or did you mean not to include hobbies at all? I'm aware this might be country-specific, but I'm intrigued, since it contradicts what I have been told multiple times before.

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin
      @ProfessorHeatherAustin  9 месяцев назад +2

      I'm glad you found the video helpful! Regarding hobbies, it can indeed vary by country and industry. The key is relevance. If your hobby directly relates to the job or showcases transferable skills, it can be worthwhile to include. Otherwise, it might be best to focus on your professional skills and experience to keep your resume concise. Hope this clarifies!

    What are your thoughts on using an “entrepreneurial undertakings” section on a resume? I’m looking to get into project mgmt but I have no “formal” professional experience.
    I owned my own successful fitness studio for 7 years where I did everything (one woman show) until I decided to close the doors. I also currently own a small e-commerce business (my husband and I run it) for the past 8 years.
    Both businesses gave me an opportunity to use project mgmt skills but my role wasn’t project manager. So I read an article that creating an “entrepreneurial endeavors” section is sometimes a good way to showcase that experience.
    I have been in a role of marketing director snd program coordinator at an entrepreneur development center for the past 2 years and did 8 months of contract work as an assistant project mgr at a marketing agency that I can put in the professional experience section.
    Thoughts?

    A Career Services professional, here:
    1) If you're a college grad, especially recent, use the free services of your university's Career Center to help you write/review your resume.
    2) AI can make it fast and easy, but don't underestimate the necessity of developing your own critical thinking skills. Most employers are going to want those skills, and when we rely on something to do things for us, we can lose that.
    3) Some employers are starting to disqualify candidates if their application documents look or sound AI generated
    4) Regardless of using AI to write your resume, you will have to speak about these things in an interview. So... great. You may have an outstanding resume but if you can not speak about the information you provide, you won't get the job.

    • @zealousideal

      Facts! People keep trying to use all these cheater/short cut methods but it usually works against them. Colleges and schools also use AI to combat people that use AI to cheat and write their papers. 😂
      It’s ok as a help and to save time in some cases, but you still need to have the skills yourself to write your own papers, resumes, and other documents. Everyone still needs to think critically, write, comprehend and speak effectively, including know how to interview for jobs and answer questions. 😂
      It’s not going to land you a job and if it did then humans would have bigger issues and not be needed.

    • @netnavigator3264

      If they can use technology to disqualify applicants, we can use to get noticed. The irony is that even if you don’t use it, like when it didn’t existed, being honest and just you, also didn’t get you the job either. Nowadays you can see so many well educated, graduated and experienced people not getting a job, either because they’re “over-qualified” or age discrimination. They prefer to hire younger people for a low salary and cut costs firing the old ones. Employers/recruiters just want to hear what they want to hear (by asking mostly the same old dated questions) and not what you have to say. I once read “interviewing is sitting two liars facing each other” type of thing.

      Did you use ChatGpt for your resume? Have you gotten any interviews?

    • @williamporter8932
      @williamporter8932 3 месяца назад

      I might have a solution for that: I once submitted a resume with a cover letter (always have a CL with your resume!!!) to a government contractor for a job working with the VA. I called up the contractor's HR office and a secretary answered. I explained to her who I was and what I was doing, a brief verbal bio from me (I'm retired military), and to whom would I send my res & CL. I was trying to impress her while still remaining humble and respectful. She said to send it to her and she would absolutely ensure that it gets to the right person and to feel free to check back with her for any updates. In short, I was hired less than 2 weeks later. Sometimes, instead of waiting for them to call you, you need to call them FIRST and be nice, humble, and respectful, briefly tell them why want the job, and let them know what you can do for them.

    um...is "K?" the new "Like"...
    Like, omg, how many times, like, did you say.."k?"
    Like, I am going to like, guess, 30+, k?.. wow.
    One of the first things I taught my kids when they were writing speeches was - stop saying LIKE. Now I guess I am going to add, "K?" to that requirement. :(

      Facts! Sadly, people apparently have lost the skills to speak and communicate effectively these days. Even in very basic speech classes they tell you to NEVER to say any of that…Very Sad 😔

    Wait…a Professor?! This is scary if you are truly a professor. Our high school (and maybe middle school kids) literally speak better English and more professionally than you do. It is a shame in which the education systems here in America have been reduced to. This is very sad indeed! 😔

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin
      @ProfessorHeatherAustin  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there! Are you also a teacher? If I speak like a true professor, no one would watch my videos. The videos would be too complicated and hard to understand. Especially for my audience in other countries. Thanks for your feedback though. 😊

    • @zealousideal
      @zealousideal 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@ProfessorHeatherAustin I am not a professor, but I am a retired teacher and a college graduate. I didn’t say to “speak like a professor,” I am saying you might want to use proper English (big difference). So, yes, I think your foreign viewers would actually appreciate that since the average American speaks improper English. So, just food for thought. 😉

      I thought your comment was rude until I watched more of the video. ProfessorHeatherAustin you are obviously knowledgeable but I encourage you to slow down a little - you speak very fast, and please drop the "k" and "Yada Yada Yada". These take away from your credibility.
