WHOA!! That was a sheer drop! My heart was pounding as you were walking along those rocks! Such a gorgeous waterfall. Another great video in beautiful New Zealand. Hope you feel better soon.
Everything looks so perfect NZ😍the landscape, the infrastructure, the small and big city's and the people are very friendly and beautiful 🤗just awesome 👍Thanks for sharing and take care 😁✌
I wonder then why almost every Kiwi leaves NZ and settles in dusty Australia keeping the NZ population fairly static at 5 million!
And they seem to have treated the indigenous people with a lot more respect than their neighbour in the north.
We used to spend a week up in one of ski lodges on Mt Ruapehu each winter. Lots of great memories of my childhood watching this, thanks. Mount Ngauruhoe, which is the steep very volcano shaped mountain in the area is the mountain used for Mount Doom in Lord of the rings films.
Thank You Gabriel 🙂💙👍
We used to stay there when skiing, I will never forget the drinking water there. Unbelievably pure & delicious‼️ I have never tasted water like it again 😋😋
Heather you can even find better water, but you will have to actually travel
@ that I have certainly done many, many times & nothing has even come close 👍
@heatherstephens9295 I'm sorry Miss Stephano, but I'm not able to believe you.
NZ water is a bit acrid. I don't dig it 👎
Another good one. Good little adventure.
Fantastic hike, 14:28 is Mt Ngauruhoe aka Mt Doom. The landscape is so desolate but beautiful, has a mysterious feel to it. I remember going to a Chateau there years ago. The walk to the waterfall was gorgeous, so serene. Great video. Cheers. 🌋❤️
25:47 haha that is good to know that “ hummocky “ can be used for Scrabble! I won an epic game once with using “ Croutons “ so I need good words.
A pronunciation tip in NZ, when a place name beginng with "wh" it is pronounced as a f sound.
That Rangipo Desert area is so unique and beautiful
Dude your a badass for living the real life. Congratulations on your success!
you're
@@mikeykeyes Is this English class? lol
Hey Gabe, since you're getting a cold and you're in NZ, you should buy some local manuka honey and eat at least a few spoonfuls!! Hope you can feel better quickly ❤
If you get to Wellington, whose harbor is an extinct caldera like Santorini, one recommendation is Beethoven House, a really nice hostel. If you take ferry across to Fiordland, you will enter a 28 mile long fiord on way to Nelson, heart of the kiwifruit growing area.
Tawhai Falls is Gollums Pool in the LOTR movies.
U never showed the Chateau Tongariro as u drove past. Been around since the 1800’s it used to be a hotel which shut down very recently due to not being earthquake proof. I worked there twice.
Fond memories n thanks for taking us along on ur adventures
I see, good to know. That's wild that the waterfall was in the movie. I filmed a clip of the lodge but didn't end up including it.
How you did that hike in that footwear I will never know lol. I am of Ngati Tuwharetoa Tribe and Ngati Hikairo and these mountains are sacred to us. I come from a village called “Kakahi” 30 minutes north of here and we have the “Whakapapa river” flowing through our village and the water is fed from these mountains. On a clear day it’s nice to see mount Taranaki from here. I live in Auckland now but whenever I go home I know I am there when I see the mountains. Note: the letters “wha” is pronounced as f. So, “Whakapapa” is pronounced as Fakapapa.
That was a really cool look into that caldera, that was a long way down.
You scared me how close to the edge of those drop offs you walked.
Beautiful waterfall
Look really nice out there !
Nice hike !
It’s a pity you aren’t doing the Tongariro crossing . For you it would be sublime. There is no sign specifically pointing to the “National Park “ because Tongariro National park encompasses that entire area and you were in it. As for Mt Ruapehu and “ top of the Bruce “ road- that would be packed with people on a Saturday on winter for sure. It’s the north islands main skiing area and many thousands flock to it in the winter. You might be missing out on seeing key things Gabe without having local knowledge.
Cool, love that area of New Zealand.
Hi,that was trippy I was the custodian/caretaker of that lodge you looked into we got snow drifts to the top of that window.so good your finally in NZ.been watching you for years.happy trails.
Whoa, very cool. 👍🍺
You saved some money and got a cool hike in I’d say it worked out ok 👍
Wow, this landscape is really wild (a special mixture of Iceland, Alps and Canary Islands volcanoes somehow), amazing. Of course it is Mt. Doomish as Mount Ngauruhoe in the same national park is portrayed as Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films.
,, 👍👍👍
Gabriel, Yellowstone is the oldest National park.. Banff is the third.. There are more than 6,500 national parks in the world. 🌎 wow
Right on, good to know.
"Heading to the wrong side of the car" 😄😄😄 That would be me, too!
We took a short trip around the Ngauruhoe volcano,it towered majestically like Mt.Doom in Lord of the Rings. Those Ruapehu volcano lava fields are stunning.
New Zeeland is Amazing a great place to make the Trilogi Lord off the ring. 😊
Amazing hike for you when you don't feel well.
7:35 Looks like a drive into Mordor 😅
....given it was filmed there
21:46 Gandalf saw the orcs and forgot he is THE WIZARD… you did amazing 🙏🏻
How bizarre how bizarre 😊 👌🏼 Terrain
A song of that title was written and performed by New Zealand musical group OMC. Worth listening to.
love watching your vlogs and a big thank you from england for taking us on your travels
Lake Taupo is a massive supervolcano crater
Gabriel when in the South Island stop at Castle Hill area, it's on the Main highway easy to find. You will find it quite fascinating I'm sure.
Oh no, you are not planning to do the Alpine crossing!? Its doable with shuttle bus from Rotarua and other places. They give you plenty of time and you can catch any of the buses that are waiting at the other end of the mountain. It really is the best day hike in the world!
I can see the similarities between California and New Zealand but it is nothing like the United Kingdom which is much greener and meandering with lots of various landscapes. In this video I see lots of similarities with Greece, which is also arid and rocky . Thanks for sharing this interesting country with us 👌✨🙂
I don't really see the similarities, nor do I see the purpose of constantly trying to compare places.
I did that hike way back in 1998.
Hi Gabriel..you're pointing at the Doom mountain is Ngauruhoe..next to it is Tongariro..the Whakapapa ski field you are on is Mt.Ruapehu😅but your pronunciation is great..natural..look at brightside he could easily walk on the ski area called Hut Flat...in Summer only 😅.not even halfway yet to the top cafe ..well done..plenty of shorter walks on lower lever.. your next destination Waitomo caves ???.
Take care. please film more driving around the TNP enroute to the carrot town Ohakune while you going back Taupo..thanks.
Right on, thanks for the info.
Just a couple of recommendations for Wellington when you get there: the Te Papa Museum is well worth seeing. And we had great dim sum at Dragons restaurant.
Too bad that it' didn't work out to ride up the SkyWaka - I did it back in May (on a clear day) and it was outstanding. The part where you were thinking you were near the top of the gondola wasn't near the top - optical illusion with the heavy fog obscuring the cinder cone of the volcano. It's a considerable ride up to the top (about 2 kilometers) reaching a distance of about 2 kilometers above sea level - it's a ways up! Definitely try to go back there on a clear day if you ever have the opportunity - it's an incredible view and there are some great trails up there 👍 PS - the lack of signage there was because you were already inside Tongariro NP. There are multiple areas to explore, so it can get a bit confusing! Glad you got a taste of it, though!
Yeah a bit of a shame, but you snooze you lose as they say and still got a nice hike in. Hopefully better luck next time, also with the weather as it would have been pretty foggy up at the top.
@ Yeah by my estimate I doubt you would have even seen anything on a day like that. It needs to be pretty clear to be at its most spectacular. It’s pretty decent up there though - lots of great hiking trails and a great restaurant/cafe with massive tilted floor to ceiling windows on all sides to take in the views - very modern and impressive.
love!!! paper maps🧭🌎🌞
Yeah you definitely need a better map. Ditch the GPS and buy a paper map book cos you really weren’t where you thought you were! Still a very cool place though. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing you were pointing to at the end is well worth doing, even though it’s very busy. You can organise a shuttle from the finish back to your car at the start (or vice versa) back at National Park Village or online. (Though please be prepared with better shoes, warm clothing layers, food, water etc.)
😊😊😊
Hi watched again..understand how you end up in National Park.😅.a very small town on half way of Auckland and Wellington train line...Surely there should be wellsigned say TNP head quarter before turn left on SH48... most people did the same mistake. On behalf AA ot transport department. Sorry for half an hour wasted..hope you feel better..try the Thermal pool in Taupo 👍
Thank you Gabriel…from Canada. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
the soon to be 51st state 🇺🇸
@ Many Canadians are saying they will fight to the death to prevent that. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
@ it's gonna be a bloodbath. Luckily, we are mighty 🇺🇸
Canada is merely a wet dream for Trump, along with Greenland. People like you never even considered this before, until orangeman decided to babble this nonsense. @@ss2gora0
Definative looks like you could encounter Orcs there😃
Great journey, so far i am not that excided about the country that i want to go. But maybe that changes when i see the south. Happy to tag along
That's jolly decent of you!
@witlof5492it's just not doing it, Whitaker
LOL - So many of the videos include a close up of a bathroom toilet in the first minute of action; watch those breakfasts!
Hi Gabriel, I'm quite surprised by the climate in the South Pacific. I was expecting warm tropical weather, and there was snow. What a mind-blow. Is that artificial snow or real snow? It's similar to the country of Colombia, where it's hot close to the equator, yet they get snow in the higher elevations of the mountains. This is also true of Mount Kilimanjaro, where you think of a hot climate, but snow and ice are seen at higher elevations.
Its much further south so it gets more mixed weather patterns than it's neighbours. South island is much colder especially in winter. Many parts look similar to UK. The mountains get a lot of snow and blizzards.
Time for night school geography class, Torres.
I think that most people understand that this is not a tropical region. 🙄
Wilfredo, please stop embarrassing us.
When hiking in New Zealand please wear better footwear. Some trails are more challenging. Especially in the South Island. Also bring a jacket like you did as the weather in NZ at altitudes is very changeable. Many tourists forget NZ is a narrow country with predominantly West winds this means rain and chill factor can happen quickly. Every year Search and Rescue have to locate missing and ill prepared overseas tourists at the expense of the New Zealand taxpayer. Sometimes it has been recovery of deceased.
DOC, the department of Conservation has good information for hiking and the Information usually has too.
👍👍👍👍👍
Another good waterfall.
Sarah. All waterfalls are good.
@BigBillyBowden true. Good but not as common as they should be.
@@saratemp790 I don't understand. Why would waterfalls be common?
We're debating waterfalls now, Sarah?
5 New Zealand dollars if you hang onto the bottom of the gondola with one hand.
Make it $5 USD and I'll do it. 😛
You got it! $5 USD it is! Hang on well! 😂
Hi I am from Canada is it hard to drive on the left in New Zealand or Australia
It's a little tricky, the important thing is to make sure and get an automatic transmission so you don't have to shift with your left hand.
what a town Whakapapa - either say it as you read it or I think Mao's pronounce WH as F so Fakapapa!
7:34 that looks so ominous
Hey buddy, that thing you pointed to as the possible mountain, was a cinder cone. We have lots of them here in California, especially around Mammoth Mountain.
Disclaimer: the following is not professional medical advice.
Ibuprofen and Paracetamol both kill pain but also lower fever. As long as fever is not too high it is better to not bring it down with medication. Fever is a sign that the body is combating an infection. It helps kill bacteria and viruses. I personally found taking very high doses of vitamin c for a few days (not on a regular basis!) quite helpful to combat colds.
Great video and hiking tour. You need better hiking shoes 😄
They are hiking sandals!
What hiking shoes? He doesn't seem to own any shoes. Just sandals
@witlof5492No, you're wrong. These are Teva Hurricanes. They're versatile but not specifically for hiking.
@@UffeUlferts I'm no expert. I think he only wears boots in the winter. You won't get him out of his beloved sandals very often.
They worked for Fuji: ruclips.net/video/g43_GexELvI/видео.html
National Park is the entire are, there is tiny town with the same name
😊❤🇧🇦🗻🏔⛰
❤
Your pronunciation is really getting better of New Zealand place names
Awesome video
I can see you living on great barrier island.eating pies.
Manuka honey can be quite good for you!
Dear Gabe, Which phone you are using?
Google Pixel.
Google maps doesn't work in New Zealand. I always use Apple maps which is always acurate.
When are you going to Antarctica?☃🏔😎
Hey Gabriel! If you make it up to Auckland you can take my 4WD terrano + roof tent and explore our epic northern coastlines and vehicle accessible beaches. Shoot me a DM :)
Thanks a lot for the offer, I caught a flight out yesterday. ✌️🍺
@ easy as bro 🤘 have a good one!
Great exploring Gabriel, thanks 💐
If you get into the water, watch out for the eels! River Monsters had a great episode about the giant eels in New Zealand rivers and lakes.
It seems you need better shoes for your next climbing

Appropriate footwear?

Don't attempt the Tongariro Crossing in sneakers.
You wouldn't be the first tourist to die unprepared.
Get some proper hiking boots.
I've been hiking, backpacking, camping, etc. for more than forty years. I trekked the Himalayas five times, including in the middle of winter in sneakers. I've climbed Mount Fuji and hiked the Kalalau Trail of Hawaii in sport sandals. They work fine for hiking. What's much more important is to have a hat for the sun, water, food, rain jacket and warm enough clothing in case it gets cold and/or wet. I'm not doing the Tongariro Crossing this time, but if I did I would be more prepared than I was for this little hike. ✌
Ngaurahohe is mt doom
Looks like Martian soil :) very desolate.
Just without the little green men
Gabriel my heart was in my mouth, when you stepped on the rock, a sheer drop, below it. I felt like visiting the toilet after that!!!! 😮
Mr Gabe Traveler's vids are not for the faint of heart
Felt like visiting the toilet 🚽🪠? Huh? 🙄
Señora Liftuss, that's a very disrespectful thing to say about the toilet.
First
Boom, got it, congrats. 👊
New Zealand wouldn't exactly excite you to visit, based on these videos.
It was incredibly foolhardy to climb Ruapehu in just a short sleeve shirt. The weather can change in less than thirty minutes, and then some poor sod will have you spend a week in crappy weather finding your body.
As I showed I had a warm jacket with a hood. I wasn't going far, I could have easily made it back down even if it started pouring down rain or snowing. I've been doing this for a while, pretty experienced with the outdoors.
Commas are your friend, Christophe
I would wear hiking shoes while traveling anywhere except to the neighborhood coffee shop.
I would also wear full pants, shorts are not becoming of a older person, and especially in foreign countries a safer wear. Lastly plain shirts enable you to blend in, no point standing out unless you want to make a point
I think you would be better served minding your own business
@ good point
Seems like a rude comment señor
Are you the Fashion Police, mister?
I completely agree with Mr Climber. Gabe Traveler's wardrobe and footwear for NZ are completely inappropriate.
Compared to elsewhere NZ looks boring as shit and every attraction is a lame overpriced ripoff
So far I've seen nothing that compels me to go there. Its all rather meh...
