Me: "Epica feat. Floor Jansen" reaction nr. 349"
Chase: "Listen, there is a Horn!"
Me: "wait..what?...FKN son of a gun, there is HORN!"
This made me chuckle. 😂👌
Haven't even noticed this before... wow. But now I hear it loud and clear. Incredible.
Same here. Listened to this a thousand times, never noticed the horn. That's why I love these vídeos
Chase doing Chase things. This happens to me with every song he react to that I'm familiar with.
Haha 👏
"Hang on. Stop! Stop! Start! No! Yes! I'm broken"
This can be in a song 😊
That usually is.
I love it when Chase puts his fighting fists up to protect himself from the powerful vocals coming towards him. Makes me laugh :D
Floor can outsing anyone, but when she's singing a duet she always complements the other singer.
That's why among her peers, no one considers her a Diva and she is as far as I can tell, well liked by most of them. She puts the performance before herself and doesn't make it all about her. It's also why most of the other vocalists are willing to perform duets with her.
Floors's beautiful Versatility of style and technique is Extraordinary. She's Rare.
Finally! I can't believe this had not happened yet. Chase is paying all his debts xD
Another standout thats missing would be "The Day That The World Breaks Down" by Ayreon. It would be a perfect fit for him.
@@Equilibrium2903 yeah, that one I hope he does with Julia someday, I'm sure it's on the list already
A Carneson always pays his debts.
@@dac2007 Good call. I suggest that on their first collaboration.
I am charmed by the fact that the female choir, who likely spend most of their peformance time doing classical music and church music, are having an obviously difficult time not launching into all-out headbanging as the song progresses.
And the conductor was rocking out too!
@@mikegershon8528 Any conductor who does not rock out to the music is not feeling what he is conducting. Have a look at some videos of Toscanini, Tilson Thomas, and most famously, Bernstein.
it is about rhythm :-)
I like when people do this one after they’ve already heard Epica on their own without Floor first. Most people look at this one first and stare at Floor and don’t often look beyond her. I’m glad you’re looking at everything and appreciating everything!
Sadly, it does not happen very often and with vocal coaches it is where it stops
"They dont run out of air" - Chase 2020
That friendship though! The chemistry between those two women on the stage amplifies the effectiveness of this performance so much imo. I love Simone and she is amazing but Floor has this special talent of matching other people's registers/tonality of their voices!
Chase, remember...waaaaay back at the beginning, when you didn't like symphonic metal?
Lol.
Loved this bro
As a fun fact, he was wearing that same shirt when reacting to GLS.
Did he mention that? I'm curious which of his videos is.
/grins
This is a great performance, but my favorite thing about it is the way the two ladies interact on stage. There's so much respect and affection here (like that head bump at 4:55), where the normal expectation is that they would be competitive with each other. It's so nice when you learn that the artists whose music you love are also nice people.
Epica really needs to do another big live show that is professionally recorded. So many albums and EPs have been released since the Retrospect show.
I suppose that they will record one for their 20th anniversary as they have already passed the milestone of 1000th live show. They may do something for MaYaN, which will celebrate its 10th-year anniversary next year.
@@Immortall1408 I'm just trying to add up the overheads for the inclusion of a live orchestra and two choirs, plus the rehearsal time before hand, it all has to be paid for and not something you can do except very occasionally I think.
@@572Btriode to celebrate each finished decade
@@Immortall1408 Yep, that's the affordable frequency I had in mind.
Yep 20th anniversary or 25th anniversary!
well, Nightwish and Epica back to back, We're getting spoiled Chase ! Can't wait to see this one tomorrow !
Nightwish Saturdays and Epica Sundays...that sounds good! 😍
Chase+ Epica ft Floor= kid in a candy store!!
Floor and Simone sing so well together. Great colab. No one trying to outshine the other as each have their own style.
You have to remember they are friends as well.
You are by far the best reactor. Vocal coaches never analyze the whole performance, and I am quite certain that they don't hear the full complexity of the music. You do. Bravo.
Just found this channel via Tank the Tech. Chase is extremely entertaining to watch, and what a fabulous song to react to as well. Subscribed!
For some reasons, right now he's part of 4 reaction channels I follow for diverse reasons, mainly because I learn from them, but Chase is just great on the composition side of things, the details he digs in every songs he listen, it's just crazy, with Tank you'll learn eveything on the technical side, Julia Nilon and The Charismatic Voice are, to me, the best to pinpoint everything you need to know on the voice side, singing techniques, etc. but above all, they're all just great reactors, they love what they're doing and it shows, it's infectious.
@@W4rr4X If you are interested of lyrical analyzes on top of that, I recommend Guylain Prince OFM.
@@W4rr4X yesss 4 favs! Also add Christi from The Voice Love Co. To that list!
Yes! This song is a vocal feast. Great way to celebrate 🇫🇮 Independence Day. 😃
Ayreon - The day that the world breaks down next :)? Anyways, awesome reaction, keep it coming!!
These are proper reaction videos, Chase. Just saying...
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Chase, I am continuously impressed by your ability to pull apart these performances and show that you hear more musical perception than the ordinary listener. I truly believe that you are able to hear in three dimensions. As always, an excellent review and analysis of the performance.
Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
I absolutely love how these ladies (and Anneke, Marcela) have so much respect for each other and the the actual songs they are singing. Nobody is out for the glory. Never see any of them showing off or trying to outdo each other (and get into what is sometimes called caterwauling) but just full of fun in the togetherness and supporting each other throughout.
I love those ladies... I also love the bands they are in!
I wish Chase would react to Marcela, she's amazing and I feel she's not getting the recognition she totally deserves 😢
You have completed the trillogy: Julia, Tank, and now You! Each breakdown adds more to the richness of the music when you listen to it without critique! Great job!!!
Chase talked more about the vocals in this video than most self proclaimed vocal coaches on youtube haha.
Great analysis as always, Chase. I'm glad you familiarized yourself with Epica properly before watching this video so you could really appreciate the awesomeness of this collab. For a lot of reactors, this is the first Epica video they do so it ends up being all about Floor.
They usually comment on this song after three Nightwish songs and they focus on what they are familiar with, I suppose. I would probably just add to Chase´s assesment of their individual timbres that Simone is a mezzo-soprano while Floor is a soprano, which is something that allows Floor to reach higher notes with much more ease. But I really like Simone´s timbre when she goes lower with her voice. I think she has not used it yet in Chase´s reactions.
@@Immortall1408 I think Floor/Simone version of Flower Duet from Léo Delibes opera Lakmé, would be a nice Christmas present for the whole world. But I like Netrebko/Garanca version as well 🤩
I guess Julia rubbed on some vocal knowledge during their collabs. :)
@@branislavfx Well, they could take it as a challenge, because Marcela Bovio and Laura Macri have already done it - and Nella Fantasia.
@@Immortall1408 Thanks for the tips. Already typed it in the YT search 👍
Hi Chase,
I am not aware of any official music education of Simone, but she started her music education of with flute, stopped with that at age 12, followed by jazz and pop lessons, and then hearing Nightwish's Oceanborn she went into classical. The latter was at age 15 :). She is considered to be a mezzo-soprano, while Floor is considered to be a full soprano.
To me it looks and sounds like singing is easier for Floor than for Simone, but I may be completely wrong on that, as a total non-expert. Simone's singing is great, however.
Interesting tidbit is that both originate from the south of the Netherlands (as do I incidentally, but I can't sing at all :)). And they are very good friends.
Thank you for your, as usual, marvelous, insightful and educational reaction!
Warm regards, Wim
Epica always manages to give every instrument and singer room. It's almost never muddled. One of the things i love about them.
You should see both of them at "Epica - Stabat mater dolorosa
Btw good to hear Epica here again
Ayreon - This Human Equation If you want more Ayreon and Simone (who doesn't want more Simone) great song off of his last album. I love Ayreon and would love to see him as well as Tohider on the channel a bit more great video chase as always
Two exelent vocalists very good band ,orchest and chior lightning it adds up to this performance we Dutchies are verry blessed!!!
This would have to be my favourite reaction so far. Chase quite often appears happy, excited, scared, perhaps all of the above. Very entertaining, and informative.
Out of all the reaction videos I’ve watched, I really enjoy yours the most. You point out parts I haven’t heard before, you give technical insights, you make sure to appreciate things and people I haven’t even thought about.
Your reactions always seem genuine, your enthusiasm and appreciation for music is unique. What I love the most is that you always have something positive to say. It’s refreshing, keep that up!
Oh boy Epica.....
The essence of silence
Freedom - the wolf within
Design your universe
Storm the sorrow

Next after Epica... Delain?
Hopefully, After Forever. Lol
Let's not forget the Serenade of self destruction!
The Gathering in the Anneke period? :D
Delain with Marco!
Chase heeft al reacties gedaan van Delain.
Usually hate it when someone pauses a ton of times but you do it very well. You always make sure that you’re covering a part to a T and the amount of knowledge you share is unbelievable.
Very much enjoy your reactions!
Thank you so much for saying this. 🙏🙏🙏
So happy you did that one. My absolute favorite Epica song. A masterpiece in every aspect. 🥰🥰🥰
That was a great Carneson weekend: Elan AND Sancta Terra ♥️
10:37 "They don't run out of air!" Had a good chuckle at that.
😂😂😂
A great duet between 2 symphonic metal goddesses. Simone Simons was 3 months pregnant when they did this show & i moan when I have to carry shopping.
Gary Holloway 😂😷👍🏻🤘🏻
We where there that night. It was in 2013 with full orchastra and choir. I think it' s funny that everyone is now just dicover epica nightwish etc. Have fun on your journey.
I love these reactions Chase. So many in the"react game" just watch the video and say "that was cool, please subscribe!"
Your breakdown and analysis is on another level, and I love watching people discover the music I love, while also pointing out elements I didn't even notice were there even after years of playing a song.
Keep at it man!
This one song must have had so many people & so many hours of work behind it - it’s mind boggling!
The band, the singers, the orchestra, the choir, the lighting etc.
(Sheet music, rehearsals etc).
Every piece of this puzzle fits together beautifully! 🧩 🎵
Congratulations to all these talented people co-ordinating together.
Two of the most versatile vocalists on the planet, who know each other well, with an amazing band, is only going to bring greatness. This song is so lovely. I can't say that I ever noticed the horn before either. Proper job for pointing that out. :) Have you done any Kamelot before? The Haunting featuring Simone is one of their signature songs. Thanks for the reaction. I enjoyed every part of this.
Chase, you are the quintessential SYMPHONIC METAL reactor!!! 🎻🎸🎻🎸 NO one does it better, dude!!!!
Best wishes from Namibia 🤟🏻🇳🇦🤟🏻
Aaaah thank you so much 🇳🇦
During the first week of our total lockdown here in South Africa, I sent this link to my brother his reaction was one word: INSANE
Finally, oh my goodness I've been waiting for this!!!
shoutout to whoever programmed the lights on that show!
Funny you say that. I was thinking, “Damn. Those lights are too much.” I found them to be an annoyance more than complementary to the performance. To each his own.
This live version is just epic! I always get shivers from the chorus...
The only reactor i have ever seen who said Simone and Floor have different vocal, and i agree with you Chase.
As usually Great reaction and much informations.
For next Epica I recommend :
Design You Universe
Cry For The Moon
Phantom Of Agony
Universal Death Squad
Monopoly On Truth
Kingdom Of Heaven
Chasing The Dragon
Hope you will do it Chase 😁 and I still waiting for Babymetal turn 😂🤘🏿
Have a damn good day Chase🙏
Chase! Your face, man! ( 1:40 ).... I KNEW it!.... and 6:09 ! Arien's fills on the kit!!.... As a former French-horn player, it's nice to see and hear horns (brass in general) being appreciated! .... Simone is amazing - recovered from serious MRSA and then pregnant when this was recorded!! Ace, Chase!
The studio version was actually written as a solo song, so I guess it makes sense that Floor takes a supporting role live.
I LOVE this video. Not only does the music kick ass, but I love the relationship between Floor and Simone, which is what makes this really stand out.
You should react to After Forever. It's a band, where floor sang before Nightwish and ReVamp. Mark Jansen (Epica's guitarist/vocalist) played there too, before he quitted and created Epica. You should check out songs from first two albums (when Mark was still member)
The legendary "Follow in the Cry" which they still occasionally do with MaYaN or "My Pledge of Allegiance".
After Forever is literally under-rated. They're the perfect blend of Epica and Nightwish! Follow and Pledge are iconic... Not to mention Yield to Temptation and Sins of idealism
@@Evenfall19 Can't agree more
Soooo much better than Nightwish of today🤘🏼🤘🏼Rewamp ruled
I find it impressive that the orchestra can play with all the lighting effects.
Yes! I've been waiting for this!!!
In this particular performance, Simone was several months pregnant. So the placing of the hand may have been just baby pains after bending over for the headbang section at 13:12 .
Finally. So looking forward to this, it's going to be EPIC
...A
Imagine having to read notes with all those lights going on. Major, major props to the orchestra and the choir!
I've listened to this song like 50x and have never heard the horn section before you pointed it out....
Me too!
Excellent! I was waiting for this reaction. Thank you very much from Montevideo, Uruguay. I'm a big fan of your reactions!
I wish you would react to After Forever (Floor's original band). It's the perfect blend of Epica and Nightwish (on the heavier side like Epica). I think you would really enjoy their work; so sad they're under-rated. People hardly react to their music. I recommend the following songs from them: Follow in the cry, Yield to temptation, Pledge of allegiance pt 1, Digital Deceit, Energize me, Victim of choice, Sins of idealism (gosh there's so many. I'm gonna stop here for now lol)
I guess the issue with AF not being requested more is that the band split up so long ago. It did not benefit from additional 10 years (or more) of promotion to audiences and largely not being in the public eye. The quality of music has little to do with it, in my opinion. Thankfully, it still benefits from being connected to Mark and Floor and there are some reactions. :-)
@@Immortall1408 yeah- it sucks that they were disbanded :( still have some epic performances and their studio albums are epic! Mayan does Follow in the Cry and Pledge of Allegiance, but it's nothing like when Floor performs with them :/
if you think after forever is underrated, what about revamp? people seems to don't even know about their existence
@@RandallHidalgoS21allas96 I think they're both awesome, and my opinion goes back and forth between which one I prefer. After Forever reminds me more of a blend of Epica and Within Temptation for some reason, maybe it's the production. ReVamp is awesome too, they're just harder to describe IMO I'd say they're more intense, sometimes they remind me of a darker Nightwish but usually it's something totally different, a bit heavier. Both bands are awesome though, not that it's a surprise, anything Floor touches turns to gold!
monolith of doubt is a good one as well
Oh. My. Gosh. Two favourites in a row? Yes please! 😍
LOL everyone needs a hard reboot after listening to this. Floor and Simone? Come on man...#1 and #2 in my personal list of best female vocalists. I love how the harmonize, I love the fact that they are good friends, I love that they have so much passion for what they do and are both such sweet, down to earth "real" people in real life. Then you have the band members themselves.....c'mon, have you seen a tighter group of musicians? Okay, maybe Nightiwsh, but really they are both so good, why would you choose right? :-)
This song is an absolute masterpiece. That chorus is burned into my brain, and now finally THE Mr. Carneson has got around to giving us his excellent break down and reaction? I was sitting here shouting at my monitor "GO BACK TO THE START!!! THATS WHAT WE DO AROUND HERE !!!" Ok this day CAN'T get any better! Cheers sir!
That's how you make a high fucking quality reaction. It's an A+ reaction when the content creator points out lots of details on his first listen that you haven't noticed over dozens of replays. My man doesnt even react, he A N A L Y Z E
The fun they all have on stage is awesome, same thing when band leader and Floor played in After Forever.
Well this is shaping up to be a Damn Good Weekend 🤟🏻
Loved this! It's such a good performance. With Epica the drummer Arien always stands out, he's so good and adds a lot of little bits in the live performances that aren't on the recorded songs. I would love to see you react to Epica - Chasing the Dragon! Also more Delain would be amazing, their latest album Apocalypse & Chill is fantastic. Burning Bridges or We Had Everything are great songs from that album.
Welcome back my vertigo - Chasing the Dragon!

I was waiting for your reaction the first time the chorus came around. You did not disappoint. Great reaction, as always.
Finally dude!!!!! Been waiting like crazy for this... xmas came early today! Awesome vid and reaction man!
"The Divine Conspiracy" was my first Epica record. My dive into this genre had been a few months before with After Forever, and that album re-aligned all my neural connections and put me into metal grounds, so i still have a crush on its songs. Yet, when this show happened i was completely blown away.
Not only they managed to play live with a frigging orchestra and record it flawlessly (engineers ftw); they had Floor the metal godess singing along. I hope you can get hands on the Retrospect DVD some day. It's an impressive masterpiece.
Once this pandemic is over, i'm all in for a series of reactions of "Tank & Chase". It even has a ring to it, right? Like an 80's series.

The Ninth Wave and Violent Shadows would be great too, the first is practically symphonic metal and the other speed metal, only five years apart.
Your reaction at around 6:20 reminded me so much of the "I need a moment!" form The Fresh Prince. Hilarious and on point. :D
😂👌
I was trying to add up the number of channels they must have been running to that mixing desk - the orchestra is 70-piece, the mixed voice choir has to be at least 8 per section (I can hear the bass, baritone and tenor male parts, so probably split tenors with 4 male sections, but I'm less certain of the ladies parts - probably the same splits but different names and higher) - and then all the mics and band instruments, including one on each drum. I think it would be as tight as a ducks ass getting that lot into 150 channels.
So yeah HUGE shout out to the audio engineers. The must've had an early breakfast to start soundcheck in order to be ready for the evening concert. Well worth it though - the results are spectacular!
Simone and Floor's voices though! - the first tie I heard this piece I felt like going outside for a cigarette afterwards (and I quit over 3 years ago). The harmonies have the same feel as Delibes' famous duet from the opera Lakmé, The Flower Duet ("Sous le dôme épais"). The eastern theme is present in that too - it is set in India. [trivia] I believe Lakmé is the only opera to have a fashion brand named after it, and in an odd coincidence, their board chairperson for the first 46 years of existence is named Simone [/Trivia].
Classical voice training does include fast and silent breathing, so you rarely hear either Simone or Floor take a breath, and both have the lungs of some species of whale.
Oh, and Simone was slightly restrained in her headbanging as she is 3 months pregnant in this show.
The amount of work must have been insane to get everything ready.
@@dc1925 I figured that there must be some kind of system like that in use, probably computer-based, which would allow mixing to be grouped, but it still doesn't remove the need to check each individual channel and balance it within the group it is assigned to. Every connection and cable has the potential for a problem and with that many, there are bound to be a few duds, and of course, you still have to balance them within the group or even sub-group before presenting the output to the next level up the tree, rinse and repeat at that level, then present the whole set to a manageable scale console. You gain in manageability during the event, but it still needs a lot of setup and testing.
Last time I did anything like that was when it was all done with physical knobs and sliders with purely analogue technology and our 32 channel board (at my church) was considered studio-grade - yeah, I'm that old (it helps to live in the birthplace of electronics, with many members working in that industry and able to build it from scrap-bin or end-of-project components donated from work, and a new-build where we could have the hard wiring up to a triple glazed mixing room looking out over the main sanctuary). In addition to real-time amplification and relaying to the creche and other rooms as necessary, we recorded all services for the housebound at quality onto quarter-inch, with (frustratingly) a pair of recorders needed to last a full service (and a third as hot-spare). then it was edited some to get it under 90-minutes and mixed down from there to compact cassette and duplicated. from one master to 10 at a time (again, built by members) at 4x speed in a single pass (both sides of the cassette tape done together, so effectively 8x speed into 10 cassettes at a time) for distribution the following day. At 6 minutes for 10 cassettes, we could produce them pretty fast, by the standards of the day.
Hi Chase. Stabat mater dolorosa next please please. Floor and Simone ar divine 🤘
The only time a baroque piece with full orchestra has been performed at a metal concert?

@@Dan-ir3hu Not sure if that's an opinion. Pretty sure that's a fact. Simone was the soprano and Floor was the alto in the song.

Great reaction Chase, notice how floor and simone sort of switch "roles" and I think the choir was more often joining whenever floor was singing her parts rather than simone to give that "main" role feeling to simone, great song in any case with great singers. Thanks for the reaction Chase.
Great reaction as always Chase. As you mentioned it in this video, Floor dropped a vocal masterclass video on her channel yesterday with regards to breathe control. It's well worth a watch.
Thank you so much for deepening my love for this masterpiece by expressing your love for music physically, with absolute hearing perfect pitch and sharing your knowledge. I'll be listening to this vid over and over again to go deeper and deeper in. Love to you and your loved ones

Oh boy it's nice to follow you on your journey into Symphonic Metal - this os meant in the most possible way - you looks like a boy just having discovered Lego and all the possibilities it gives you - the happiest man on earth. All your background knowledge is pouring out of you - and I really enjoy learning from you 👍 thank you.
