Looks like a game about OCD. The player’s response is the voice in MC’s head telling them about patterns and issues needing to be fixed or adjusted. The repetition in words in some parts (and the random fear of certain words and letters) can represent an obsessive compulsive person’s need to check things over and over again to insure they’ve been done right.

Why is no one talking about the fact that it's kinda implied that her mum killed her dad? When trying to buy the milk, she says "mum will throw me out of the window if I don't come back with milk", and her father 'jumped' out the window. I don't think he actually jumped.
Also i agree with the majority that the MC probably has OCD, and perhaps some other mental illnesses brought on or worsened by the trauma.

    • @TheGuindo
      @TheGuindo 3 года назад +707

it might be trying to imply that, but we also have an unreliable narrator to some extent. MC's view of the world is skewed and doesn't completely reflect reality - remember how she describes a truck as a bear? When we see her mom at the end, she *seems* scary, but all she really does is ask if MC bought milk, if the medicine helped, and then tell her to go to bed. it seems cold and intimidating, but we're being shown this the way the MC sees it, not the way it actually is. Tone and presentation make a big difference; it's entirely possible that her mom was trying to be kind to her, telling her to go to bed because she knows how exhausting the trip was for her, and being so direct about it because she didn't want to tire the MC out by forcing a longer interaction. So it could be that the mom is actually just normal but MC finds her scary because she *thinks* mom pushed dad out the window.
But, of course, it's also possible that mom *is* abusive and scary, and maybe she *did* murder the dad by pushing him out the window. We simply don't, and can't, know for sure.

Also, I've seen plenty of jokes about Canada and It seems funny to me too. Because in Russia (where I'm from) milk is sold in various packages including bags, carton, etc. I thought "bag" was the most appropriate and neutral translation, but seems like it accidentally became a meme.

    • @utsuhoreiuji6155
      @utsuhoreiuji6155 2 года назад +121

      Hello, author of the game!
Speaking of milk bags, afaik the only place that sales milk in bags is Ontario, Canada (which is why it becomes a meme in US) and that's for the most common milks (say full fat, partially skimmed etc.). They do have milk in cartons (but not as common and is usually reserved for Bourgeois milks like organic ones). Plus milk bags are in a weird 1⅓ liter format (sold in pack of 3, totalling to 4 L), which is even weirder.

I saw another commenter say this, but this really has to be about OCD. It runs in my family and while I personally don’t have a diagnosis I see these symptoms in my family and I even feel it to an extent too. Constantly needing reassurance, repetition, a sudden rush of dread and anxiety after realizing a mistake (which may not be a mistake from the perspectives of anyone who doesn’t deal with this.)
Even the beginning, stepping on both grass and asphalt, the uneven nature puts the character on edge.

Even mundane tasks like going out to get soda is difficult for me. If I take a different route than normal I get stressed, if the store is crowded I get stressed, if I fumble with my money or putting the soda into my bag I get stressed. Comparing the walk home to ice cream is honestly a good comparison. While the walk to the store is stressful the walk home promises the ability to relax where you feel safest with the added enjoyment of the things you just got.
Honestly, it feels kind of like a few different psychological problems being portrayed. Even maybe DID with the character talking to another voice in their head.

This game feels like it's about OCD, which is great because you don't see that often. OCD absolutely feels like a surreal fever dream sometimes, especially trying to explain your fears and compulsions and bizarre assumptions about the world to someone else, sort of like the way that the girl explains it to the player. The player appears to be the medication she's taking, trying to help her recover.

Does that voice usually feel detached from you for anyone else? I don't mean hearing voices, but the part of the inner dialog in your head that forces the obsessive thoughts onto you feels like an entirely separate entity from that regular negative self-talk voice that most humans have? I've always been curious about that.

    • @raspberryjam
      @raspberryjam Год назад +7

@@FluffyNinjaUnicorn3Gaming My ocd is nowhere near as strong as hers, so I can only be a datapoint low on the scale, but for me it feels similar to intuitively remembering a deeply held fear/threat. Ive just got simple 'every edge on the floor shoots out infinite lines you cant stand on' and 'breath in twice through your nose, breath out once through your mouth'.
I would describe the feeling of stepping on an imaginary line as remembering some traumatic experience where poison spikes shot out of the floor when I stepped on that invisible line. Even though no such thing has ever happened, stepping on it still feels like 'oh god oh god, please dont hurt me oh god i can feel the poison i can feel the bruise please'
And of breathing more normally as 'Hello, Im doctor ○○○ and always remember kid, cycling breath through your nose and out through your mouth strengthens your lungs and keeps spores from taking hold. If you dont breath like this, your chest will collapse and rot'
And keep in mind no event or even imagined scene has said anything about bruise spikes or chest rot, Im just extrapolating backwards from the feelings Id get when not following those things.
As time has passed, Ive become better at imagining the world differently to avoid thess feelings, like the lines dont intersect with the floor if the floor isnt flat, and so Im at the bottom of a basin, where all the lines pass harmlessly by a meter or two below me. But I still cant stand right against any corners, cuz it cant fall away enough.
And breathing is fine if instead of air which has dust and spores and mold and rot, I was instead breathing cold water, which has been distilled and purified, with trace amounts of soap chemicals to clean everything I breath.
On a high level Im aware nothing has changed, but that doesnt mean visualizing the world differently doesnt help

The "long gap" that she's talking about, i believe, is dissociation. Apparently this is quite common after a traumatic event. I know from experience.
I don't wanna talk about what happened but it got really bad in my late 12 years and ended in my early 14 years. Once it stopped, i was there for about two days. Then not. It was like i just dissapeared.
You know how when you take a nap, you wake up disoriented and not knowing what time it is. You might even wonder for a moment how many days have passed since you fell asleep. But of course, it's none right? Probably just a few hours at most.
Except in my case, it wasn't just a few hours.
    It was 2 years.
At first (i was maybe 13 and a half i think?) it started out just kind of in and out. Like when you fall asleep in the car and a bump wakes you up, and you look out the window to see that you're somewhere else, before you fall asleep again just a few seconds later.
I woke up and fell asleep, and woke up and fell alseep over and over until i just....stayed asleep. I don't remember much so there isn't much I can say about it.
I can say that the times i was "awake" were scary, but with a little bit of a haze over it, like a translucent curtain. Maybe that's for the best. I can tell you that being "asleep" was more bearable. I can also tell you that i don't remember being 14.
Just barely, like the few flickering images you can recall from your dream when you wake up, but it gets harder and harder to remember as more time goes on. Just random bits of it that weren't even significant. Except they are because they're all i have from then.
I can also tell you that it's scary. It's so scary. I was told that me dissociating (apparently that's what it's called) was my brain's way of protecting me from awful memories, thing's that would make me scared of things i shouldn't have to be.
But it's counter productive. Because the thought that something happened to me that was bad enough to be dangerous for me to remember, scares me too.
I want 14 year old me back, but i wish i had a shield for all the ugly things that would come with knowing what happened. It feels like i lost a part of myself, and now there's a missing piece that can't be filled. Like when you're finishing a puzzle, but as you search frantically for the missing piece, you find out that it's been glued onto the underside of the table you're at. It's too stuck on to try to pry off and you can't seem to get a good grip on it. The worst part? It's glued to the table picture side up, so that you can't even see what it was suppossed to be. You can't even finish the puzzle in you're mind
It's awful. As I'm writing this, I'm realising that that wasn't the first time i was in and out. I don't remember being 4, even though my brain kinda started in a way before that. I remember less than i thought i did. I guess it's good that I'm writing about it then, despite my nerves.
So sorry for oversharing. I can't ever bring myself to let these thoughts stay in my head long enough to be thought about. It feels too overwhelming and it scares me. But idk, something about that part must've made me braver i suppose.

I can understand how you feel kind of. Something bad happened to me when I was 5, and I have very little memory of it. Up until a few years ago, I had convinced myself that it didn’t actually happened, and that I made a story up for attention. I didn’t realize that that didn’t make sense, since a 5 year old would not even know about a situation like that unless it had occurred to them. But I didn’t want to think it had happened, so I lied to myself and said I made it up. Then I told my mom that I made it up and she just said “No you didn’t” and I had to finally confront the fact that what happened to me did happen. Even now, I don’t know exactly what happened to me or how bad it got or even who did it to me but I just have to live with not knowing

This is definitely about trauma and mental illness, and the coping mechanisms sufferers create to deal with it. Thinking of yourself as a character in a visual novel is actually kind of a genius one to help give you motivation and focus, though it could be dangerous like any other delusion. The girl's circling thought processes actually... feel a whole lot like my own do sometimes, and the sudden realization of her steps being unequal and her struggles to find a medication that really makes a difference anymore are also extremely relatable. Like. This game is incredibly offputting, but it also feels distinctly familiar to me, as a person suffering from severe anxiety and depression.

i think the dx is deliberately vague on purpose, since theres a lot of generalized symptoms and a clear cause in trauma. my first thought was actually some kind of psychosis with the seeing red, the bear thing, etc. that said, i like how it feels more "real" than most portrayals of mental illness. the sort of mental framing, talking to oneself as a third party, getting stuck on thought tangents and mental loops, in addition to the more typical "uneven" feelings and stress about interaction. the way the protag states things, the odd language, speaks to me a lot and is absolutely what made me think this was based on real experience.
i like how the protag, as the anthropomorphized meds, can also talk her through things. like literally walking her back through her uneven steps, unsticking her loops, gently reminder her of the next step, etc. it really reminds me of my own mental efforts and checklists. i like this better than most hokey "the real demons are Depression" games.

This reminds me of not just OCD, but Schizophrenia, too. Like a mix of it. I'd know, I have both, and thankfully my medications actually work. In the past, due to being a social outcast, I never really learned how to talk to people right. I have hardly any filter, and I tend to tell too much about myself. I'm still that way a bit, but being in social games, it actually has helped me a lot to learn how normal people talk and all. I'd also always been a good student in terms of English, so learning more eloquent ways of speaking was a must.
Though, in terms of the Schizophrenia, I've had it all my life. Since I was born, even. I remember seeing horrifying things, then dismissing it as if it were normal, since no one else seemed to react to the absurdities. When a doctor pressed me on it, I finally told them about it, and got started on meds. With my OCD, thankfully it's not too bad, at least not to this extent. I do still have the perfectionist complex, though... Even with meds, that never really stops. I find myself needlessly restacking shelves at stores, and even having bizarre conversations to myself quietly. Thankfully, I've learnt how to compose myself and look normal in the presence of others, so nothing too bad has arisen.
This game speaks to me in a certain personal level, viewing the mental illness they portray is almost... I dunno, surreal? It's like I was looking at a version of myself that's much worse off. The person who worked on this game, and their colleagues, did a very good job portraying the absurdity of it all.
Of course, this game could just be straight-forward and just be weird, too, and not a euphemism and/or juxtaposition for mental issues, PTSD, Schizophrenia and OCD.

I have a theory that the player themselves is the girls new medication working, and every option you do is how she’s interacting with the new medicine. The game over almost plays out as her quitting or throwing away her new medicine or “manly” who’s failed her and hasn’t worked. As well as the player having the option to help her through the day or organize her thoughts. This may also be helped that when she’s talking to a “reader” you don’t actually get any dialogue options (implying the player and that reader are different entities [the player being medicine and the reader being you])

It's amazing how well the mental illness is portrayed. I'm perceiving catatonia symptoms (the way the speech cuts off mid sentence), compulsive obsessive behavior (tile-stepping), psychosis (not being able to tell metaphor from reality, as with the whole 'step 1' vs 'step 50' conondrum). And I'm only at minute 3 so far. Also, I only know all of these things because I researched. So, I'm quite impressed already.
    UPDATE:
-oh now we're seeing allucinations, another for the psychosis pile.
-repetition! Another catatonia symptom (the one where speech gets into a loop of "excuse me, what").
-And the one that repeats a few of your own words, also catatonia - I can't remember the name, but it's not echo...
    - ...actually the part where she repeats "o" back to the monster might be echo.
    - the part about her being scared of the letter "o" also feels like it belongs into one of these diagnosis, though I can't pin point it at this time...
(...Man, this is textbook examples for psychology medical training.)
    - psychosis ramblings in the bag of milk bit, and the mile of icecream quip - man, that one got away from us.
    - and now I think about it, the very start of the story where she thinks people can read her thought so she has to be extra careful sounds like thought-policing, which is part of obsessive disorder.
Man, I'm fascinated. What an eerie realistic portrayal of mental illness.
EDIT: Oh. Oops. Did I ruin it by putting here my guesses for the diagnosis?

The game reminded me of something middle/high school me used to do. I had really bad anxiety (i still do, but its better now i think) and whenever i talked to someone, i would recall the sentence i said and then count how many syllables it had. If the number was even id be happy. If it was uneven i was sad. It was weird... having something so insignificant have such a huge impact on my mood at the time.
I can also relate to the protag imagining themself as if they were in a video game in order to sorta... lessen their anxiety and pretend theyre here to impress someone? that one being the player?
I cannot go to therapy due to family issues, so I'm pretty sure I have a lot of mental issues that are undiagnosed. One of them is definitely depression, but I have also been wondering if I don't have something akin to ADHD or OCD as well. Maybe one day ill be able to find out... for now im surprised at how i can relate to a semi-self-conscious character in a visual novel.

It only just hit me that at 8:36 the protagonist mentions her mum specifically going to throw her out a window if she doesn't come back with milk. Just like her dad was thrown out a window maybe? And since the mum had that scary and unreadable mask on...i have to wonder if her mom is a murderer and the protag Is trying to cope with knowing her mom could get her too at any moment. Welp! On to the bag of milk outside I suppose!

This is kind of embarrassing, but because of a lot of stress from my parents and a bunch of mental issues I've had most of my life, I never really got out of the "imaginary friend" mindset. It's similar to how the protagonist in this game acts.
I just want to say that if anyone out there has an "imaginary friend" type of thing, it's not as strange as you think. It's a way to cope if you're in an environment that makes it hard to rely on others to talk to about your feelings, or just dealing with lots of stress/depression/anxiety in general. I'm not sure I'd still be here if I felt like I was the "only one in my head", if that makes sense. So to anyone out there that has something like this, don't feel ashamed about it. It can be a very helpful way to cope!

To be honest... This sorta reminds me of the worst times of schizophrenia in the way I have it. The combination of depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism and a few other things can really fuck with how I see and perceive things when it's at it's worst.
Of course, it's never been this extreme or literally like this, but it feels like... a strange allegory for what it feels like at it's worst. And in a way... it's strangely comforting to see it put down into a type of media that feels familiar in how I've dealt with it. Talking to myself helps so much. Gets thoughts straightened out, and the back and forth of.... well, myself and I? Can sometimes give me realizations I wouldn't have had otherwise. Like saying things out loud helps, and imagining someone else is there for those voices helps. They go from being unknown thoughts to something that feels more real and easier to handle/control.
I feel like i'm rambling and making little sense, but I just... really like this game. Feels like I can relate to someone in a situation that has always been so hard to explain.

I find this relatable, I’m slowly losing my memory and cognition. So much so that yes, eventually I’m fairly certain I’ll be unable to go to the store to do something as simple as buying milk. I appreciate that most people chose the nice options. Forgetting what you’re doing while you’re doing it is horrible, but at least I’m physically unable to worry too much about it.
Pro tip btw if you’re also struggling, having Siri set reminders is really helpful. So is setting timers for everything. Notes are good as long as they’re in a very visible place. (Mine are on my phone’s Homescreen, but anywhere you see often works.)

    So here's how it works:
    You have milk:
-That milk is inside a bag.
-This bag isn't alone, it can come in a pack which can be held within another, bigger bag.
-When you finish your groceries, we put the milk in a plastic bag like other groceries.
-Depending of the quality of said plastic bag, we can put another one as to avoid it breaking while walking with it.
So in reality, this could be interpreted as a plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag with milk in a plastic bag with milk, Or you could add a plastic bag to your plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag with milk in a plastic bag with milk to extend it further making it a plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag of milk in a plastic bag with milk in a plastic bag with milk with in a plastic bag of milk ans so forth.
    Hope this clears things out.

What a great game. I loved it, good work. I see a lot of theories that it's about a person suffering from OCD but I think that depending on whether you view the contents of the game literally or symbolically changes its interpretation. In my opinion everything that happens in this game is a schizophrenic hallucination by the main character, including the strange appearance of all of the people/her mom and how the entire game is coloured red. The MC literally hearing a voice inside of her mind and responding to it aloud and having delusions about herself (Being in a visual novel) is the strongest evidence to support this in my opinion. Furthermore she says that she stores "adjusts" to her and she believes all of the traffic lights are extinguished for her when she walks so she can hurry up. She also said she is "i'm not in the world your'e talking about", which interpreted literally means she thinks she's in her own world. She also straight up says she She also has rather disorganized speech /thought patterns such as when she is talking about how she feels like "a mile of ice cream" and generally says very little to anyone but the voice in her head. She seems to have a poor memory as well, since she says multiple times that she forgot how to buy milk from the store.
I certainly see the evidence for this being a person with OCD as well. Much of the above can be interpreted as symbolically or metaphorically for how the MC *feels* about living with OCD and the challenges that she goes through. However I think the parts about the MC talking to herself and seemingly creating delusions about the world around her create a much stronger argument for her being schizophrenic. I also think she could be schizophrenic with symptoms of OCD as well, since the MC methodically counting her steps and going over what to say repeatedly in her head are very strong evidence for this.
I can't make any sense of her being afraid of the letter "O" though. When she explains it she has a vision of some kind of portal into a darkness or void. Or maybe it's a planet or a star? An eye? A bottomless pit? Black hole? I don't know. I thought at first it might have something to do with some kind of sexual abuse but by the end of the video I'm still thinking about it. Hopefully someone else has a better grasp on it.

    • @consensual.housefire
      @consensual.housefire 3 года назад +7

I've formed an idea relating to the o based on these facts:
The MC mentions "being thrown through a window" by her mother if she doesn't return with milk.
She mentions that her chore to get milk has changed following the death of her father, while he too was out getting milk.
The image of the O we see is a dark hole, surrounded by a red swirling vortex
When she arrives home, she says something about hanging off the window or balcony, she says that she has conqured her fear of heights thanks to her medication - the image we see is a dark void with a building swirling around it in red.
I think that her mother is abusive, and the mental illness is a commonality from her father. I think that the father accidentally fell, or was pushed, or killed himself by throwing himself out of the window or balcony - into that black pit that the MC sees when looking out the window, which bares a striking resemblance to the O Image.

In my parents house, the hallway was wooden planks, and I always had to start with the right leg, left leg, right leg, left leg until I reached the room I wanted to go to. Also walking on the side walk, I always stepped once on the tiles, right leg, left leg, right leg, left leg and so on. I also sometimes had to tap on things on an not odd numbers but like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ect. I have stopped doing it now, but I still remember doing it.
Also when I stroke something I also had to do it in 2 or 4 times. That I do sometimes, but it's not as bad as before.
