That bus driver was BSing you. The road markings on the motorway stayed at continuous white, which means UK (Northern Ireland). It was only at 2:37 that you entered the Republic of Ireland.
As someone who lives in a country that doesn't share a land border with any other country (Australia), I have always been interested in how countries that do share land borders mark out the border between them, and the way that people are allowed to cross the border.
They were still in NI when he said they had crossed the border, the UK road markings have a solid white line at either side of the road whereas in Ireland it's a broken yellow line with a 120km/h speed limit sign at the side of the road.
You'll also notice that you've crossed the border into the Republic of Ireland because it's pretty much the only country in the European Union to use the American style square road signs instead of the usual triangular signs.
I noticed that. Living in England and then Canada where we have the diamond yellow signs - its such a strange mix of UK and North American sign styles.
You can always tell the exact border position on the major roads that have painted lines on the left hand edge. The North have solid white lines and the Republic have broken 'dotted' yellow lines.

Alex Looney Snaps Austria and Italy are two different countries with no hard border (see Schengen Area) are they two different countries? Obviously yes duh.
Alex Looney Snaps The island named "Great Britain" correct but "Britain" as in "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Norther Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign nation in Western Europe." still means that it is officially called Britain by name. That quote was from the official Wikipedia page for the United Kingdom. Edit: Sidenote here, idk if that has anything to do with the Island of Ireland itself being a British Isle.
Nice video. Just to note that Dublin is an anglicized name likely based on Dubhlinn from the Viking era, meaning "black pool," as you noted. The Irish name today is Baile Átha Cliath (pronounced something like Bawl-ya Aw-ha Clee-ah), literally "town of the hurdled ford." The anglicized place names aren't literal translations of their respective Irish place names. Being from the Republic of Ireland, I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've never crossed the border into Northern Ireland but I've checked several cross points out on Google Maps and I think anyone who says that we'd be better off with a border checkpoint is seriously in need of getting their heads checked. Though, I've driven on the UK mainland and since they can't fine nor demerit me for speeding, I tend to take the piss and smile for some of the speed cameras as they flash. Irish road signs are better and we're the only country in Europe that's using the yellow diamond warning signs used in the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. Also, we use "Yield" signs before junctions and intersections, the same as in the US and Canada, instead of "Give Way" as in the UK and some other commonwealth territories. We also use yellow hard shoulder road markings, broken ordinarily, as seen in the video, and continuous on motorways. The road in the video when you cross the border is the N1, a dual-carriageway (mind you, HQDC - high-quality dual carriageway) or a divided highway as you might know it, but not a motorway. However, in the Republic, HQDC roads are of motorway standard in terms of their construction but don't come with motorway restrictions and speed limits (as in, no learner drivers, cyclists, etc. are allowed on motorways and motorway speed limits are 120km/h instead of the 100km/h limit imposed on dual carriageways and two-lane "national" roads). The M1, when the N1 turns into a motorway is only about 10km south of the border at +54°2'12.02", -6°22'59.94", and it remains a motorway to the end of the line, so to speak, at Dublin. Anyway, I digress... Also, the tour operator is full of complete trash as has been said numerous times. It isn't until you see the road marking on the hard shoulder change from a continuous white line to a broken yellow line (as mentioned above) that the border has been crossed. You'll also see the signs warning you that speeds are in km/h and not mph, as we use metric for distance and speed in the Republic, unlike in the UK. When he was telling you about the small enclave, I was wondering what map had studied because any current map would show you that there was no such enclave and that the road you were on and surrounding areas on the left and right, respectively east and west, are all in Northern Ireland. He probably thought you were further south than you actually were because at 2:37 you cross into the Republic and on the right (west), a bit over, is Northern Ireland and on the left is still the Republic. At 2:37 you were at exactly +54°6'49.46", -6°21'53.69", if you want to verify this on Google Maps using "Street View" with respect to the change of road markings. Just search with those exact coordinates and you'll be right there and you'll also see that anything north of that, thus before 2:37, was completely and 100% Northern Ireland without any enclave or patch inside the Republic.
On a point of pedantry, it is Baile Átha Cliath, the Gaelic name for Dublin and not Dublin itself which means "town of the hurdled ford". Dublin actually means "black pool".
Er, that's what I said! But the capital city of Ireland, in Irish, is not Dublin or Dubh Linn or anything like it! It is Baile Átha Cliath: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin

Andrew - I respect your wish to be British and you will always have that. I think there is an element to truth to what the previous poster said though - the general view in Britain is that NI would be better served as a part of the south. The British Social Attitudes survey has on almost every single instance reflected that the British public would favour the north leaving the UK rather than staying in the UK. Anytime I talk to my friends in England, I've never once heard them favour the north remaining in the UK. In truth, they see it as draining the British taxpayer. Even look at the British public response to the DUP joining the Tories - they were horrified. I would say that even if one day the north joined the south, I firmly believe your British identity would be protected and your British passport would still be valid. As a bystander, it seems to me that Unionists in the north are more concerned about their identity than economic or social issues. Identity is really just an arbitrary thing at the end of the day. Brexit will hit northern farmers hard, and you have to compete with the south for foreign direct investment - which is simply not possible at the moment because the south is a much more attractive place for FDI due to our position in the EU and far lower tax rates. We will have all the jobs, while you will be forced to depend even more on the public sector for employment. It's really not an enviable position. But look - I do wish you well and I hope the north's economy isn't hurt by Brexit, although I fear it will. Don't be so anxious about your identity. Nobody is going to tell you that you can't be British anytime soon. Stop worrying so much about it.

Andrew Mcquilkin well you're completely deluded. The south of Ireland has the strongest growing economy in the EU for the last 4 years. It's considered an economic miracle. Dublin is furiously building office blocks to facilitate all the business that is leaving London. Even small business in the North of Ireland are preparing to move south. Your silly UK imaginary (not British as Northern Ireland is not British and just part of the UK) identity is fake. England wants nothing to do with you. Good luck.

The bus driver was telling you a lot of nonsense there, not to put too fine a point on it! Absolutely on the contrary, you were in Northern Ireland until the road markings changed at 2.34, and the fields on both sides of you were in Northern Ireland too! I have no idea why the bus driver told you otherwise. There is in fact a brief moment when the other side of the road and even part of the passing lane on your side *re-enters Northern Ireland* for a few metres; that probably occurs right at the end of your video.
It's comical how he was just BS'ing, seeing as there is an obvious change in the appearance of the road and the signs once you cross from one side into the other.
You are completely correct. For a very short distance, the international boundary runs along the central divide (or passing lane) of the road. At one point two parallel vehicles travelling in opposite directions are in different countries. Finally I have found someone with intelligence here.
Be careful as the law either just changed or is about to change and speeding / parking violations that happen in either ROI / NI / Scotland / Wales /England will count towards points on your licence no matter where you live.

Once your on the mainland, you can go anywhere in Europe without a passport (Well Most Countries Anyway)... Just to add a note: If the UK votes to leave Europe (I hope they don't) in the referendum, watch this space.. You'll see border controls go up like a shot.
Well as you may have noticed by my comment... The EU referendum didn't go the way I wanted it to go... As for your question.... If the UK does indeed leave the EU then I can see no way that the open border can remain as it will no longer be just the border between the north and south, it will also be the border for the European Union.. If this border were to remain open after Brexit, there would be no way for the UK to control immigration once EU citizens have entered Ireland via the south... I really hope that the UK government see some sense in this madness and reverse the decision of the referendum.

David O'Neill either that was copy-pasted or you have wayyyy to much spare time

On a point of pedantry, it is Baile Átha Cliath, the Gaelic name for Dublin and not Dublin itself which means "town of the hurdled ford". Dublin actually means "black pool".
Er, that's what I said! But the capital city of Ireland, in Irish, is not Dublin or Dubh Linn or anything like it! It is Baile Átha Cliath: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin

There is, officially, no such place as "Southern Ireland" or "The Republic of Ireland". The name is either Ireland or Eire.
Correct. The amount of Irish people who don't know this is crazy. ROI is a discription of the country, nothing else.
+Shane Kinsella (Kinsey) Well the term is in official use by FIFA and only FIFA as a means of distinguishing between the two national teams. So you can say its a sporting term
+stoney71 Yeah but that can be said for most countries, if only for the sake of brevity - we say Australia not the Commonwealth of Australia, we Russia, Russia not the Russian Federation, We say Germany, not the Federal Republic of Germany. -
Y-P Alexander Leith No ireland is the official name and of course the form of government is a republic. However FIFA is the only ones that use Republic of Ireland, because there is another national team northern ireland,At one time there wasone football association for the whole of ireland even after partitition This split into too one in the south the other in the norh. Both insisted on calling there teams ireland, but FIFA said this is a load of bollox and insisted on the republic of ireland and northern Ireland.Yes people usually abbreviate but in this case it was necessary to use the Full names
righto, tell me What about the bbc's use of the prhase 'the Irish Republic' is that alright? I don't frequent the sport of football so I imagine that's directed at the other chap who mentioned fifa. I am aware of what you say, even the Irish do not know what you speak of though. 0.34 : No you're not, You're still in Northern Ireland. If you look at the road markings you'll notice a solid white line on the left, that tells you you're in the North. At 2.36 you'll notice the solid white line changes to a broken yellow which tells you you have entered the Republic Of Ireland.

One day it would be nice to watch a video about this area of Ireland via RUclips and for it not be dragged down by all the politics. I enjoyed the video here regardless even though as someone already pointed out it's a showboat for tourists.
It is not a showboat for tourists. It is complete bollocks from a driver who is wetting himself laughing at American tourists swallowing his bullshit. I know the Irish border. Every time you are on the border, your arse get wet. It is in the Irish Sea.
2:50 to 2:54 love what she said
Last of questions with regards to brexit. Are border/custom checkpoints in the near future?
yeah under world trade organisation rules, you must have customs checks, or you risk giving an unfair trade advantage to each other which would be discriminating against other countries.. so if we didn't have a customs border we would be sued..
@@HaiLsKuNkY According to the EU yes - a customs checkpoint is required since agricultural produces entering the EU are required by EU law to undergo mandatory inspection at the Irish Customs and Excise. However both sides still demand for a soft border, so the custom checkpoints would be minimal.
The way bits of the road and fields are part of different jurisdictions and it isnt even straight on the road illustrates how unworkable a hard border would be for policing trade. Best to police that at the ports.
Every country should be metric by now.
The UK does use the metric system, just not on the roads.
Germsn here. Keep the things how they are where they are. I do not approve of changes.
Not as interesting as it used to be..
why were you expecting a police checkpoint?
It is an international frontier since 1921. But we can progressed a lot in a century.
I live in Derry, NI and work in Donegal, ROI. I hop the invisible border at least twice a day...😂
Is there still no border whatsoever between the two?
No. Open border. You wont even know when you cross the border unless you’re local. There’re few differences though like in road markings and In ROI they use KM and NI they use Miles.
@@bryanurizar There used to be, but everyone is happier and freer without one, and Irish citizens have rights in Northern Ireland, same as Northern Irish in Ireland :)
30 years ago that would be something you would never be able to to do. People living on each side of the border can not see each other because of the fence. Some people were shot for crossing that border and today its all history. Some old people are still traumatised by that troubles and hard border
Ulster voted to return to the UK in 1921 so enough of this 'freedom' nonsense. Also saying 'The real Ireland' is equally insensitive. Ironic how Americans play the innocent, with their history of Westward expansion only after the British were no longer in the US to protect the Native Americans, restrict expansion into their land, and keep the peace with the French and Spanish.
Oh, what a rush that must give...
That's quite weird :) Thanks for the video.

One day as an English guy with some Irish Heritage from the South, I hope that The Republic Unites the whole of Ireland, the north really belongs to those in the south, but on top of Fighting for a United Ireland, I believe with the way the world is going, Its important for the Irish to secure their nation and not make the same mistakes the UK is doing, with plenty of ISIS lovers living amongst us, as an English guy, chances are I would eventually end up a target over in IRE because of my accent but do I believe in the cause of a reunified Ireland? I would have to say Yes.. those who love Britain so much in the north, as much as to lay claim to the North for Britain, might as well just move back to Britain, You are in Ireland and the clue is in the name, Want to know something Interesting? the right to own anything for the purpose of Self Defence is not allowed in England/Scotland/wales but in Northern Ireland, the British allow it... I wonder why, desperate to hold on to this land that's why, It has nothing to do with caring about the well being of their citizens, because if they did they would respect the same natural rights of those back in England etc.

Sean Ó Briain first thankyou for a well wrote out reply. But I cannot agree with the most of it. The UK will be much stronger out of Europe . It would be a terrible mess if northern Ireland were to join with the rep of Ireland I fear that the trouble would start up again if that were to happen. Am am super proud to be from northern ireland am super proud to be British . And I also no the majority in the rest of the UK support northern Ireland. Fact is we are British that pisses slot people off in the rep of Ireland but it's a fact . I wish no harm to any1 who s Irish it's a nice country . Am not worried one bit about northern Ireland joining the rep of Ireland it will never happen . But good luck to you thanks for the reply .
Good luck.
SRM Solar radiation management Geoengineering it was not that long ago the rep of Ireland had to ask the UK for a bail out of millions !!! U seem to forget that . Plus not sure what you mean by the North of Ireland ? Is that the North part of the rep of Ireland? . Northern Ireland is a country in is own right. My passport says am British which is good enough for me .

What about money, the pound in NI and the Euro in the republic.
I hate bureaucracy. but UK & ROI had free travel because of the Anglo Irish Agreement prior
''However, despite the lack of border controls, be keenly aware that you must possess a valid Irish visa if required for your nationality, or you risk being deported for illegal presence in Ireland. I wish California freeways/highways looked like that...NO TRAFFICE backed up for miles...
When does he actually cross da border?

Somebody needs to tell them that they don't need a passport to travel from the UK to Ireland and going into Mainland Europe gets even better..
+flip inheck ... I apologise.. I worded my comment wrong.. You are correct, you do need a passport to enter mainland Europe but once there you are free to travel the Schengen Zone without needing your passport again.

Shit man, what's so interesting about that? Why is it so popular? Just you sitting in a bus, and listening to the bullshit that the driver says? And why do you have your passport out?
occasionally the buses get stopped and they get on and check passports if you sound foreign. At least they used to i haven't got the bus down in a while.
Only Americans. Whoever sounds American and isn't visibly carrying their passport, they automatically look for contraband and fine them for not doing so.
