My favorite lens ever. Have been waiting fast 35mm L-series RF prime for years, and finally we have it!! For my professional work, it’s RF 24-105/2.8L all the way, but that thing is often too big for street/travel/social, where this new RF 35/1.4L is just perfect!

Hi! Thanks for the review! I really like the Canon R6 Mark II and I'm thinking of getting it, but I also need a prime 35mm lens. Unfortunately, Canon doesn't have a lens that compares to the Sony FE 35mm 1.4 GM. For example, the Canon RF 35mm 1.8 isn't bright enough and is quite slow, while the EF 35mm 1.4 L II USM is also relatively slow compared to the Sony FE 35mm 1.4 GM. The only option I see for myself is the Canon RF 35mm 1.4 L VCM. Do you know how it compares to the 35mm 1.4 GM from Sony in terms of focusing speed for video? Are the issues with vignetting and edge distortion as critical as other reviews suggest? My main criterion is focusing speed (I've set up the Canon R6 Mark II for maximum speed because the default settings aren't the fastest, but even so, with the lenses mentioned earlier, the focus is significantly slower compared to Sony's GM lenses, which I tested on the ZV-E1 camera). However, Canon lenses are good for photography, where the focusing speed is sufficient, but I'm considering this for video, and they lag behind significantly at the moment. My hope is on the 35mm 1.4 L VCM. Thanks in advance for the answer, and I hope you have a great day despite everything :)

Hi! I'm glad to hear you’re considering the Canon R6 Mark II-it’s a great camera! When it comes to the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM compared to the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, here are some points to consider regarding focusing speed and optical performance for video:
      1. **Focusing Speed**: The Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM is designed with a focus on fast and accurate autofocus, particularly for video. The VCM (Vibration Compensation Motor) technology is meant to provide quick and smooth focusing, which should help when you’re shooting video. However, it’s widely thought that Sony’s GM lenses, including the FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, often have an edge in focusing performance, especially in video scenarios where quick adjustments are necessary. This can be attributed to Sony's advanced autofocus technology and how effectively it tracks subjects.
      2. **Vignetting and Edge Distortion**: While the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L is expected to produce high-quality images, like any lens, it may exhibit some vignetting and edge distortion, especially at wider apertures. Many reviews suggest that while there is some vignetting, it can be relatively easily corrected in post-processing. In terms of edge distortion, Canon lenses tend to be well-corrected, but you may notice some differences depending on your specific shooting conditions. The RF 35mm f/1.4 L should perform well in this regard, but comparing sample images and reviews can provide deeper insights.
      3. **Video Performance**: Given that your primary use is for video, you might want to pay close attention to user reviews focused on video usage. Many videographers prioritize smooth focus transitions, minimal focus breathing, and how the lens handles in various lighting conditions.
      4. **Settings and Customization**: Since you've mentioned you've customized the R6 Mark II for maximum focusing speed, make sure to also utilize settings like Dual Pixel autofocus and consider using face and eye detection features for optimal performance when tracking subjects.
Overall, the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM appears to be a promising option for video, but you might still find that it doesn't reach the same level as the Sony GM lenses in terms of speed in certain situations. If possible, testing the lens firsthand with your camera setup before purchasing could provide the best insight into whether it meets your needs.
I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best in your decision! Have a great day!

Did I miss the parts with the R5II and the R1 in your video?

Nope. I did say that I‘ve been testing it on the R5 II and R1 and it worked great. However, Canon did not allow me to film this. Unfortunately!

Do you enjoy your Canon R5 2 more than your Sony A7iv? Also, what is your most used Canon lens

Hey there, I like it. However I did have to change the body since my first R5 II turned on all the time, even when the ON:OFF switch was selected.

I do also have the A7C II, but it‘s super slow when using burst mode, because of lacking CFexpress slot

@@the_daniel_life I haven’t yet. Would it work while recording raw video though? In davinci resolve when I render via canon instead of davinci, it auto corrects the distortion. Hopefully it doesn’t double dip if it was enabled in camera. Haven’t tested this yet.

bokeh was distracting, had one but returned it. on canon raw 8k, there is no correction in camera. not sure why they would say this is a hybrid.

Distortion correction in raw video actually is available. I shoot with the 14-35, 28, and have used the 10-20 on the R5, R5C, and R3. all of which are perfectly corrected for in raw.
