I’m surprised you didn’t mention the part where Chris hires one of Simon’s students to help out in the cafe and Emily immediately thinks this must mean she’s getting fired, which is already a ridiculous conclusion in itself, but then she somehow thinks that since Simon played a part in hiring her supposed replacement, he only considers her a fling who’s going to be leaving at the end of summer. That part really pissed me off, they had never even discussed whether she would be staying or not.

I swear... it's like a never ending cycle with every book I read and you review:
    Step 1: Read book.
Step 2: Love book and give 4-5 stars.
    Step 3: Theresa reads book.
Step 4: Theresa reviews book and gives 1-2 stars.
    Step 5: I read/listen to Theresa's review.
Step 6: I realize book is trash.
Step 7: I realize I am trash because I still love book.

I hated that she labeled Mitch as dumb person because he is handsome, muscular and well liked guy....
P.S. I agree book should have ended when they first got together and talked it out. It felt like an ending so much that I skipped to epilog...

I love listening to your rants! I haven't read any recent books but I notice in a lot of these rant reviews that there's a lot of telling not showing. It's very problematic. Why can't character traits be SHOWN instead of TOLD to us? Just a quick way of writing instead of putting in work, I guess...

I'm currently 10 chapters into the audiobook for this and I agree 10000% about Emily! She is AWFUL. Simon's never said nor done anything rude to her and she keeps saying how much of a criticizing asshole he is. Her intense dislike towards him is completely unfounded. I'm liking the concept of the story and the other characters so far, but wow Emily drags the whole thing down a lot.

I just finished this book today. My favorite part (spoiler alert I guess for other viewers who still might want to read this book) is when they have their big climactic argument because Emily tells Simon his business partner Chris is leaving town and she'll be taking over the coffee shop, leaving out the part that Chris will be coming back to town in a few months. So of course Simon panics and thinks he won't be able to carry on the Ren Faire without Chris's help. And then Emily says pretty much verbatim that he needs to get over his dead brother and stop living in the past and stop investing so much energy in the Faire, and oh my god why isn't he happy about the fact that this means she'll be staying in town? Why didn't he react immediately to her good news? Why did he focus immediately on the potential loss of this Faire that means very much to him? And then her friend/coworker and sister tell her she did nothing wrong, and she was right to demand to be put first. 🤡 I was like, "Honestly, if I were Simon, I'd run the hell away from her."

So....... I 5 starred this book 🤐 But I have a reason lol I went to a Renaissance faire the same week I read it, and in my review I actually said it probably didn't deserve that high a rating. But while I was reading it, I was so immersed in the faire atmosphere because I had just been there, that it just made me happy. So basically, it got extra points for nostalgia? 😅 But all of your points were totally valid and I loved the video even though I had a different opinion on the book 😁

I just read this book and THANK YOUUUU for being a normal human being and hating it!! This read as a fanfiction and I can’t believe a publishing house picked this up and MORE of the author’s books after this!! I’d be so embarrassed to put this book out into the world. Also, the entire chapter-long sex scene??? What a drag. I had my fiancé read it out loud to me so we could at least laugh together lol

I DIED laughing when Emily had to ask what jousting was… like FOUR pages after she claimed to know exactly what Shakespeare was doing in 1602 and specific details about the time period. 😅 and her not knowing what acting is, apparently.

Apparently, I'm masochistic. I'm reading Well Met right now. I don't mind the misunderstandings that much, but it seems that I hate books about people who love books. So they both like Shakespeare? You don't say, that's so unusual among English graduates 🙄 and now she's telling him "The annotated Austen is good. It's smart to assign that one. The explanations give their kids a good start to understanding the text better" THANK YOU, captain obvious. He's only an English teacher, he surely didn't know that already 🙄

    Hello dear Ivymuse,
I have to admit that this was a funny rant to listen to XD
But I have a question: have you ever read a book that revolves around a romance between two absolutely distorted characters? I'm really curious.
I'm asking because from the way you described Simon I saw a fundamentally major mental deterioration within this character that might have potentially lead to those outbursts with little to no sense in them. Even the main character seems to be suffering from some kind of "mental" state.
Both Mains in this story therefore represent two extremes in my opinion. It almost seems as if the author forces you to pick which of the two significantly different minds you prefer.
I personally would never read the story XD ... because yea... it did sound awkward to say the least. Moreover it seems to be lacking several notions for it to be called a good or outstandingly amazing book... but the aspect I mentioned in the previous paragraph was what I could grasp from your depiction. I'm not sure if that was the author's intention, but I think it adds an interesting nuance to this story.
    In any case,
    I adore your videos

I feel misrepresented as someone who belongs to a cosplay pirate crew. This seems so unrealistic. What kind of person organizes a renaissance fair alone if it takes place multiple weeks in a row? That seems like something a team would do. The process also would create an interesting plot. As would actually making the fair realistic.
I haven't come across any people who completely changed their personality in self-created cosplays. Sometimes they create a background story, but they don't change their entire personality. That's way too difficult to keep up for days on end.
Also *channelling his brother's spirit* doesn't sound like a pirate, it sounds like a voodoo priest... Or is that just me?
Anyway. This book sounds like a shame. I'm already picky with my romances and the setting would've intrigued me a lot, but this review makes me not want to read it. In my words: This sounds like a lot of wasted opportunities.
Maybe I'll write a short story with the same setting, the idea has been there a while. Then again, maybe I won't. In any case, I won't do it like this. I agree with you a romance at least needs generally likeable characters.
