Prince and Princess of Wales’ Poignant Visit to Aberfan

- The Prince and Princess of Wales have visited the Welsh village of Aberfan, the site of the 1966 disaster in which 144 people, including 116 children, were killed. William and Kate were led through the Aberfan Memorial Garden on Friday to pay their respects to those who died when a colliery spoil tip collapsed and sent tonnes of ash slurry onto the village below. The garden sits on the site of former Pantglas Primary School, which was engulfed by the landslide at 9.13am on 21st October 1966, just as lessons had begun. Their Royal Highnesses met trustees from the Aberfan Memorial Trust alongside some of the Aberfan Wives group who lost relatives in the disaster. Report by Iain Jones.
It is heart warming to see the Prince and Princess of Wales carrying on the late Queen's tradition of visiting the Village of Aberfan.

It is said that Queen Elizabeth's biggest regret was waiting 8 days to go to Aberfan after the disaster. Although Prince Philip went there the day after it happened, the Queen's reasoning for waiting had been that she didn't want to take any attention away from the recovery of children who were caught in the slurry avalanche. But she later realized how much comfort her visit brought and wished she had gone sooner. It was probably an early lesson in her reign.
William is truly his grandmother’s son . He learnt so much from her .
He's also learned a lot from his father, the first Prince of Wales to have a home in the Principality in 700 years.
I dont know why but i love to see someone doing curtsy. It just looks classy for me eventho people said it's old, or out to date. But this tradition make life looks even colorful.

A poignant but lovely visit , the gardens are beautiful as is the setting ! Great seeing the exuberant school children waving their Welsh flags , life goes on and time softens the pain .

@@lsmith9249 I have never lost a child and if you have , I am truly sympathetic to your pain , I probably used the wrong words and still might it was the beauty of the garden , the warmth of the people who supported each other over so many years and the bright lively young children waving their flags that moved me to say what I said . I never wanted to belittle anyone sorrow, forgive me .
@@deborahvandalsen857 Time can soften the pain if allowed to do so. Or, one can wallow in it for the rest of their life and miss out on so much of their remaining loved ones’ lives.

my sister did, it was over 30 years ago and a friend of mine lost a child and there was a documentary about the disaster a few years ago and it was still as painful

Knowing how our late Queen felt about Aberfan, it's so lovely to see the Prince and Princess paying a visit. Very poignant, it's the first major disaster I remember as a child.

This community was dealt such a bad hand. I’m glad there’s still awareness of that tragic day. The Prince and Princess are so full of commiseration and compassion.
That day will never be forgotten, always in my heart
I was 10 years old when the pit heaps slide down the valley. We watched the disaster unfold on the school’s television. I cried and cried. When we got home and told our mam what we saw on the television she was upset. For a long time after our school raised money & goods to send to aberfan and that was my introduction to humanitarian causes which I continued to support to this very day.
The Prince and Princess of Wales take so much interest, time and conversation and listening to the different perspectives of people to find out so much information related to their Royal Duties and most importantly the extreme importance of the respective people’s lives and experiences and they both listen so intently and deeply and never ever be distracted, disrespectful by interrupting the people’s respective conversations and of which you only have to look at the intense interest and interactions of The Prince and Princess of Wales eyes and always complete eye contact with the person speaking to how deeply they are listening and taking in what the people are saying. Prince William and Princess Catherine are truly an amazing communication and correspondence connective couple but also a wonderful and very friendly listening and attentive couple towards all sectors of people and society who have come out to support as well as see the Prince and Princess who never let them down or disappoint or disrespect them in any form or manner, no matter who the people are and from where. In my own personal opinion to The Prince and Princess of Wales we are all a very happy united world family and The Prince and Princess of Wales never expect any special treatment, airs or graces, when on a Royal Duty they always become one of the people and always accept people for who they are and so amazingly become one of the same people, and never hesitant or disrespectful to shake the people’s hands, get their photographs taken with the people and are both always so eager to be involved in any task or activity related to their Royal Duty and there’s always an immense amount of confidence and trust, compassion, conversation, correspondence, happiness, laughter and joy and everyone full of smiles and gratitude when Prince William and Princess Catherine especially make their way to greet and meet the people on both sides of the street. The Prince and Princess of Wales are a truly remarkable conversing and amazingly approachable and appreciative couple wherever their Royal Duty is or consists of and most importantly meaningful of. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

It is the most emotional place to visit in Wales. My father was a miner and helped in the rescue of those poor children. To this day it is in my thoughts and to see William and Catherine visit as the late Queen did will mean so much to the people of Aberfan. It's brought tears to my eyes.

Aberfan was such a terrible tragedy. I was in Primary School at the time and remember hearing about all those children who died who were around the same age as me. 😢🏴🇬🇧💔
I watched the tragedy unfold on TV and in the press and I couldn’t take it in. So awful for all the families and the village itself but now so good to see Aberfan today in happier times

Oh my gosh, I remember when this happened, such a tragedy, and such unmaginable pain for those families who lost one, two or all of their children. I'm so glad that they haven't been forgotten. William and Catherine are just so natural and comfortable with the crowd.

I remember this day as if it was yesterday. I was in work at littlewoods pools in cardiff when we heard about it. And all the staff stopped what they were doing and cried. It was such a sad and horrible disaster. I was only 16 at the time and l will never forget them who died and all those young children and miners x
We were in awe of Her Late Majesty's dignity & duty to all , for her whole life. We are in awe of the duty , grace , charm , kindness and beauty of Prince William & his exquisite Princess Catherine who we've come to love as our future Queen. In 1937 there was a terrible explosion under a High School in New London Texas with similar results as Aberfan. Leaders from the world over sent condolences, including Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother in later years.) 💐
And as an American, this is the first time I’ve heard about that. How soon “we” forget! (Or are allowed to forget.).
There has been similar tragedies all over the world. Check out Operation Carthage in Copenhagen, Denmark 1945.
