  • There is no one in the history of cinema who photographs the poetic beauty of nature quite like Andrei Tarkovsky. He made only seven feature films and yet, his impact on cinema remains one of the most substantial.

Tarkovsky is one of the few Directors who doesn't have to "say" much and can leave you with an almost hypnotic impression. To this day Stalker disturbs me, and I can't fully understand why.

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  7 лет назад +21

Stalker was the first Tarkovsky film I watched and I didn't like it at the time. I was expecting something completely different based on the synopsis and I wasn't in the right mood. I absolutely love it now. I think The Mirror is my favorite of his. I find it so contemplative and engrossing without hinging on following specific plot points. I can put it on and get lost in my own thoughts. I think of it as the exact opposite of Inception (another movie I love). Inception demands focus and logical reasoning through dialogue whereas The Mirror uses imagery to induce an almost meditative state. Of course, it's possible that others think about The Mirror completely differently.
I think you'd really like Andrei Rublev. It's very long (3 1/2 hours), but it is divided into segments, so you can break up the viewing if needed.

I think it "disturbs" as you said, because it is a slow moving "CIRCLE" he makes using the cinematographer's camera. First, in the opening scene where the camera goes RIGHT to LEFT on the mom, child and father and then back on the father, child and mom and you do not know who is the sick one of the three; but this first CIRCLE was not finished there. Then later in the movie and in the zone the camera is used SPECTACULARLY making a PHENOMENAL CIRCLE starting from the stalker laying in the water paddle and going up, up, up, up, up, up, up, and eventually finishing in the exact place where it started. This is UNSETTLING for most of us because it is slow moving and circles the life of the main character in the movie. Towards the end of the movie, the camera returns to the family and shows who they really care about. Maybe our life is a CIRCLE? If it is, then STALKER is probably the most BEAUTIFUL reflection of it even made.

I truly adore him. his films arent even what I specifically 'love', but i just cant help to appreciate all the works he put in them. I once 'planning' to hate him just because I didnt get his storytelling style on the first try, but his craft is so well designed; the visual, staging, blocking, everything--that i cant even forget abt it. Thus, made me start trying to learn his perspective and start to admire him and his art.

I only recently got introduced to Andrei Tarkovsky. I saw his movie called 'The Mirror' and was hugely impressed by the way he shot it. It is almost as if you are made to move with the characters in each shot. The subject matter can be very hard to understand because of the poetic nature and artistic vision but it challenges you to think... think hard. A "Visual Poetry" for sure. I haven't seen anyone to date who shoots a movie in the way he would.

When I first saw the " The Stalker " it just broke me completely . My journey was ended with his long interview . I don't know what had influenced him to do so. But there is something spiritual in his direction that touches the soul !

Totally agree. The thing I love about Tarkovsky is that you don't necessarily need to dissect his movies in order to fully appreciate them. It isn't so much trying to interpret what the artist is trying to say as it is how the images and themes relate to you as a person.

Lol that was a funny joke, but he is right. People who make great art (not only art) are obsessed by it. That is what their life is all about. It takes a lot of effort to make great art and no one can become master over night. You have to be obsessed to keep on moving till you reach master level. This is why modern art sucks so much. Cause people want instant gratification. Look at music these days and new movies are shit. I guess this is what he meant, but I think you did understand it yourself.

The story of how Tarkovsky made Stalker is quite an epic in itself - with some reports suggesting that T's early death was linked to the polluted places where some of Stalker was shot. When Tarkovsky creates images of poetry and realism, he is at his creative best.
When Tarkovsky tries to verbalize his poetic vision, he feels guilty and falls back on an almost Greek Orthodox Church mentality of moralism which cancels his artistic vision.
The truth of the matter is that when Tarkovsky and his characters are silent and the action "flowing", a deeper meaning occurs and there is a poetic insight which deepens his fabulous visual artistry.
Please do not misunderstand me, Tarkovsky is beyond most filmmakers and his movies are the best ever created (visualized).
However, when Tarkovsky tries to verbalize his creation, he becomes didactic and moralistic.
His gifts are poetic and non-verbal and he should put his verbalizations in a book, not in his movies and let the movies speak for themselves.
Russians, in general, have been bullied by their leaders to such an extent, everything they do must be justified for some outside entity.
Instead, a true artist justifies his vision to no one and verbalization is the enemy of creativity and Tarkovsky needed a "stronger spine" when it comes to his movies.
His verbalization in his movies, sometimes inhibit the movement of his visual creations and I tend to plug my ears when his characters talk.

What a vague tip at the end. I'd rather stick with Kubrick's one, for obvious reasons.

I could argue for days that if there is such thing as the poetic beauty of the nature, BBC's documentaries or photos of Andrew Parkinson captures them way better than Tarkovsky.

Apples and oranges, both masters in their crafts. I prefer Tarkovsky for the emotional impact his films leave. Kubrick's impeccable attention to detail and direction is highly satisfying as well. Film students can learn a lot by watching both these great directors filmography.

Tarkovsky is better than Kubrick in my bias opinion. Reminder that both 2 of them is a great auteur with a big contribution to the world of cinema.

Kubrick has focus and vision. Tarkovsky is all about over self- indulgence to the exclusion of the audience. So no.

Tarkovsky films like Mirror is all more human than any of Kubrick ones in my opinion. The only Kubrick film that reach the same level of height is 2001.
But Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev and Stalker all have the same height too.
To me Bergman, Tarkovsky, Bresson, Lynch held the top spot. I still haven't see the works of Fellini, Kurosawa, Antonioni tho

Can you just imagine... Andrei with all these photoshop hullabullas?
OK, I understand, he was no fan of sci-fi shop... and yet, he was among the few directors who absolutely knew how one could USE them. End of story.
    My apologies (of course).

I agree that the aesthetic is almost always breathtaking. But most of the time I have no idea what is actually going on in his films. Maybe it’s the language barrier, maybe some mistakes were made in telling the story. Maybe I’m too dumb, and my attention span has suffered too much. I don’t know, I still want to see all his films. But it feels like a chore, it took me three days to watch Solaris. I’m sure the way the film is viewed matters as well. But to be honest, it bugs me how pretentious film lovers can be. Did you actually understand what you were seeing, or were you pretending because of the following? I’ve enjoyed the films of his I’ve seen whole heartedly. But they were tough to follow, and I only derived sincere joy out the aesthetic of films like stalker and the mirror. Maybe it takes some time tapering away from today’s films. Maybe I need to see more bad films to better understand the great ones. I don’t know why I’m pissed off.

smartalek180 I agree with CometCourse. As for PAscal's Wager, any semi-competent first year philosophy student could pick it apart. What if you're mistaken about which god you worship, then? Why pick just YHWH, the tribal Jewish god (the one in your Bible)? There are literally thousands.
