I've only seen Stalker and adored it. What a riveting masterpiece of cinematography and storytelling.
Thanks to this video I'll be sure to watch more of his films.
You did a great service to Tarkovsky with this video. Well done.

Andrei Rublev is a stone cold masterpiece. Stalker is one of the strangest and unique films I've ever seen. Solaris I was lukewarm to.

Agree about the Criticisms of Sacrifice. Its his one film i felt was indulgent and was checking my email on my smartphone while watching. Stalker however is brilliant. Its hypnotic and gloriously subtle while dealing the faults of human desire. Last, is it me, or does Apocalypse Now always remind me in a vague way of Tarkovsky?

Thanks for the comment! You know now that you say it I kind of see the similarity. I think if Tarkovsky had wanted to do a Heart of Darkness adaptation it probably would have been amazing as well

Interesting essay. I disagree that Solaris would be improved for having the earlier parts cut, it is perfect how it is. Thanks for spreading the word, Tarkovsky is one of the true greats for sure.

Thanks for this video. I've been wanting to get into Tarkovsky's work for a couple years now but wasn't sure where to start (that, and I don't have much free time). I'll probably start with Stalker, thanks to your video.

What's funny is my least favorite film of his is Nostalghia, where what you said about The Sacrifice would be my thoughts on Nostalghia. My favorite is Andrei Rublev. I was one of the few hundreds that bought the Criterion laserdisc of it in the 1990s that featured the 205m cut, so I notice all the missing scenes in the 183m version.
Tarkovsky is my favorite director. He's so good that your favorite can be my least favorite and we can still both be right. I do love Nostalghia, though. :D

Yeah, even though The Sacrifice is my least favourite I still think it's a great film. I'm very jealous of that Andrei Rublev laserdisc. I've got the Artificial Eye version which is also missing that cut of the film

Actually, i don’t think Tarkovsky had heard of 2001 before production of Solaris. I remember hearing that he had only heard of the movie during production

      @whoisdenan Год назад +1

no not really. he had seen it and wasn't pleased with the glorification of technology which in fact led him to the core-idea of solaris which is: nature is above all human inventions

My first Tarkovsky film was Solaris, which I loved. Next was Stalker, because of its reputation. I'm in disagreement with you; to me, Solaris was perfect and Stalker needed to be edited down, heh.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I've been chatting to a bunch of people since I dropped this video who have said the same thing to me. My first experience watching Solaris was absolutely wild, it was pre-digital restoration on 35mm and it genuinely felt like something truly special, but also it was my first Tarkovsky and I had no idea what to expect so it deffo took me quite a bit of time to digest properly.

The order I would suggest to anyone is:
    1. Ivan's childhood: it is the most straight-forward, plot driven with artistic nuances to appreciate.
    2. Solaris: here it starts to get long, slow and introspective, but settings and themes are still compelling.
    3. Stalker: an amazing movie, my favorite of him. After the conditioning received from the previous two, one can really appreciate it I think. Worth seeing multiple times.
Then just stop for the love of God. The other movies are a waste of (much) time. Tarkovsky is boring and pointless for the most part. Of course, IMHO.

You mean there's a good way to start and a bad way to start, and you know better? What an ego. And you needed to do content about it? It's useless. People will start, how they want, and they won't be wrong.
