Thank you. I was waiting for a mention of his name when Jeremy was acknowledging how the movie manages to bring back the heart of Star Trek whilst still maintaining the now obligatory Hollywood actionfest. Kudos.
I also like Captain Kirk's maturity in this movie, he's grown since we last saw him in the '09 film and Into Darkness. And his interactions with Bones and them having a drink together really make this movie feel like old Star Trek.
I actually disagree slightly with your main criticism Jeremy. Too many reboots rely on past stories to propel the franchises and just mine the same material without adding much. With this film, you got a new villain, a new planet and a new ally who don't stem from pre-existing lore, subtle callbacks to the originals, and it expands the world without losing the core characters and themes. For me, the main drawbacks were the shaky cam and spinning cam sequences (also the twist should have come 20 minutes earlier for any impact). They really just made me feel sick (first film that's made me vomit) and they made the action hard to follow at points. Saw it in 2D, can only imagine the 3D experience. Still, good film, thoroughly agree with the review on the whole.
I watched it in 3D and didn't get sick at all. And I get extremely sick on roller coasters etc. Maybe it depends on where you watch it, how far away you are from the screen etc.
at least the camera work was better than jason bourne. i made the mistake of watching both movies one after the other. you don't see a good movie than go see a bad movie it ruins your day.
Unfortunately Takei actually didn't like that they did that. His character Sulu was never gay in the original series so he thought it was kind of unfortunate that they made him gay just because the actor who originally played him was gay.
Starwind87 That's too bad. I thought it was meant to be a fun little throw away joke that just so happened to reflect the ideas of Star Trek. Be tolerant of all peoples but don't be a preachy dick about it.
@@Starwind87 I understand where he's coming from. He was also protective of it because he greatly respects Gene Roddenberry's vision and according to him, Roddenberry didn't write Sulu to be gay. I mean, personally I don't have a problem with it. But I 100% understand where he was coming from with his protests.
That moment when you realise that the Enterprise, for such a highly praised ship, get's its ass handed to it in just about every engagement. (Gas, meet fire)
thats shown, sure. you gotta keep in mind there are years between each film so the enterprise has surely wrecked hundreds of ships in that space of time.
Probably because it's a deep space exploration vessel with... arguably low armaments and isn't intended for use in major combat. Hence why the Narada, built from Romulan and Borg tech, kicked it's butt. Hence why the Vengeance, an advanced warship built for a year in secret by the greatest tactician ever, also kicked its butt. Also, Krall's swarm passes through everyone's shields, not just the Enterprises...
When you consider the advanced enemies they already know about and the potential for what is out there, you'd think they would outfit it a little better.
I think Beyond is the best of the rebooted movies so far. With the past two I did not really feel that bond between the other members and you were right that there were no huge life lessons. With this it is the best of the new and the old. Plus we did not have to sit through 2 hours of lens flairs. God I hate those.
The movie was pretty intensely cliche, there was nothing unique about this movie, I still enjoyed it but it was very predictable. The lines "Unity is our strength" then the villain replies with "no, it is your weakness" is the most cliche and overdone lines in movie history, and the whole movie reminded me of that line.
Yeah a lot of ppl shit on the idea of Justin Lin directing this film but frankly... he puts together a better and more watchable film than JJ when it comes to Trek
Yeah, people joke about that all the time but I watched '09 again last night, and MAN those lens flares are even worse than I remember them being. Like, well over half the shots. It's almost unbearable. Also, quite a bit of shaky cam, even when two characters are just talking (thinking of when Kirk meets Pike in the bar). I still quite like '09 but this blows it out of the water for me. Not just the story and characters but also the cinematography. It's actually beautifully shot. Lin absolutely killed it.
+Joe Man khan wasnt khan though its like they made a completely different character and gave him khans back story and named him khan. It is really out of place because of how similar the other characters actually are to the original characters
I felt like this movie was just...filler. Like it didn't feel like it was on as grand of a scale as the first two movies, and it just felt to me like an extended version of a tv episode instead of a feature film.
Am I the only one that was bothered by the reliance on close-up shaky cam in dark places for many of the action scenes? I haven't seen any of the reviewers I follow mention it. It made alot of the action jarring and difficult to follow, leading to this being the weakest of the three films IMO. Just me?
No issues following the action at all. Everything flowed well, and you always knew where the characters were in relation to each other, and they kept that consistent.
I think it's the best in terms of a tight, efficient script---Pegg is damn good at that (ref. 'Shawn' and 'Hot Fuzz')---where it fails is the villain and the predictable Kobiyashi Maru-like scenario. ITo this film's credit, its concise in its antagonists. Kraaal is the bad guy. The end. In the second movie the villainy was far more clunky and cluttered, salvaged mostly by Cumberbatch's stage presence. Even in a convoluted junk pile doing its best 'Wrath of Khan' impression, Cumberbatch was by FAR the best villain of the series: because he was the most physically and intellectually self-possessed. He was Moriarty meets Superman. Every scene he's in, his performance shouts 'KNEEL BEFORE KHAN!'. Still, it was a clumsy, hot mess with a forgettable secondary villain woefully outclassed in terms of screen charisma. Robocop it turns out was the most wooden character in the cast. My mistake...that was his daughter. Yyyyeah, let's face it: this film did the female cast MUCH better service. While I would have loved to see Scottie have some flirtatious, even physical repartee, I loved his friendly exchange with a competent and likable female supporting character. She did a good job. As did Ohura, who was far more palatable in this film, not the squalling lady-child like she was last time: bitching about her relationship with Spock rrrright in the middle of a life threatening mission. That was bad television making abysmal cinema. Also, dude...Sabotage. Holy Shit. Best. Throw back. Ever! I give the film a solid B- and rank it number two in terms of the series. The first is a cheesy buddy cop movie. 'I don't like you and you don't like me, but we gottuh work together to save the President!' I dub it the worst, by far, of the three. The second is the best, not for its story so much as for its ambition and character. What it got right, it did beautifully; but that ending...and the tribbles, dude: that was just...wow, so badly written. I mean, come on, if you're gonnuh fuckin' kill someone, let them stay dead! The original films made that mistake; and 'Into Darkness' just felt like 'Wrath' all over again, with 'Search for Spock', and the worst of its bullshit, concentrated and sprinkled on top.
To be honest - outside of the very first Star Trek Movie...have any of the Star Trek movies ever not been completely predictable? I mean Star Trek was pretty much the baby formula my generation was raised on. That was the major difference between Wars and Trek. Wars had the 'didn't see that coming' and Trek had the 'friendship and team work beat all odds'. Just sayin'.
Insurrection and Nemesis are the worse - They just dissolved together in a mix of badness in my mind. The one with the dune buggy edges out the other for worst (whichever that was). Best is Definitely Ricardo MontleKahn.
You haven't seen Star Trek V in the theater. My toes still haven't uncurled from that one. Nemesis I liked way more than godawful-boring Insurrection or V. Yes it's bad, but it has some decent moments and a better finale.
This is actually my favorite of the 3. It was better written, and it was more interestingly directed than the other two. There are some breathtakingly beautiful, poignant.
The Motion Picture: Good time, if you're drunk The Wrath of Khan: Worth buying on Blu-ray The Search for Spock: Good time, no alcohol required The Voyage Home: Good time, no alcohol required The Final Frontier: Didn't watch it The Undiscovered Country: Good time, no alcohol required Star Trek 2009: Worth buying on Blu-ray Into Darkness: Worth buying on Blu-ray Beyond: Good time, no alcohol required
I'm so happy you made this one a week late. I saw it yesterday, literally last night. So I'm glad no spoilers were seen. :) I wish you would do this more often.
I'll start by saying I agreed with everything you said here, and knew exactly what scenes you were referencing vaguely. This has actually been my favorite of the Abrams rebooted universe, sadly. With the tragic death of Anton Yelchin i find it doubtful they will be making any more. I really loved how they had him running around with Kirk when everyone was separated. But I can't deny one of my favorite things overall about this movie were the musical nods and character throw backs to the original series
From all the reviews I've watched/read, I cannot WAIT to see Beyond. I go all the way back to watching the Original Series on my parents' blue carpet after coming in from playing outside in the evening. I love the fact they took the series back to the basics of what Star Trek is all about. Great move by Abrams and Paramount.
OK fellow nerds out there in nerdom, hypothetical question. Why is it that most gripes I've heard online about this film is the obvious plot device used to get Kirk on the motorcycle for a badass action sequence? Some people just roll there eyes and slam these reboots, saying "Oh it's too much of a popcorn flick, it's nothing like the original". Fuckin duh people, it's not your father's Star Trek. It's not supposed to be. This Trek is for a newer generation. Yes it's a lil bit more amped up and yes, there are a few modern movie tropes thrown in, but all three movies still have aspects of what made the original shows/films great. Interesting characters, moral/ethical dilemmas. Amazing action, special effects, kick ass space battles and adventures. Trek has always been about the adventure of traveling to the great unknown, not knowing what awaits around the next turn. It's also been about character development and interpersonal relationships and ethical decisions. About what it means to be human and what makes us... US. Did anybody skoff at Captain Picard and Data riding the dune buggy in First Contact? No. Most people praise that movie and took immense joy in that scene because we were along for the ride to see that relaxed, youthful, playful side to a character who's usually so serious and deliberate. What I'm trying to say is, Star Trek has always had action and adventure. It's always been about character and heart and emphasizing both the good and bad aspects of humanity and made us stop and think. Is the modern Trek a watered down version? To some extent maybe, but it still captures the essence. And besides, if some millennial so happens to watch the reboots and then discovers the original series because of it or other series since, great! That's phenomenal. Think about it? A whole new generation of Trekkies. I say what's bad about that?
As a teenager who got into Star Trek after watching the forst 2 reboot films, I think the main reason people dislike the first to is because it focussed on action too much. Trek is supposed to be about exploration, the reboots made it seem to be about war. I enjoyed the films nonetheless, but the complaints made against them are completely valid.
The thing I love most about this is it doesn't shy away from any of the lore in Trek, even if fans say, like purists of the Star Wars saga say, "it doesn't exist". Justin Lin and his writers (namely the great Simon Pegg) managed to unite the franchise across 50 years (6 series and 13 theatrical films) which is no small feat. Especially when comparatively Disney is (which I think is a mistake). As to my favorites I'll give my top and bottom 3. My top 3, First Contact, Beyond, and Trek 09. My bottom 3 Motion Picture, Voyage Home and Generations. The other 8 are in betwee. before others ask I've been a fan of trek since Season 3 of TNG, I've watched all 6 series and like Jeremy I'm a huge wars fan too (having cosplayed Jedi, Sith and Starfleet (TOS and TNG era)
What was there to like? Please speak up! Don't be shy because others didn't like it! If YOU like it, then enumerate why you liked it! Was it all the shinning lights and flashes and running around and loud noises for no reason that was compelling? Why did you like it? Please share!!!
I haven't seen _'Star Trek: Beyond'_ yet, but I think I will. Favorite: The one Siskel & Ebert said was the only one they needed to make, _'The Undiscovered Country'_. Honorable mention would of course be _'The Wrath of Kahn'_, which many would actually consider the best of them all. Least Favorite: I think this is pretty universal among Star Trek fans, because it really didn't make too much sense, and most of us literally forget it came out, _'The Final Frontier'_. Honorable mention is a tie between _'Generations'_ and _'Nemesis'_, which I remember, but for all the wrong reasons. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Christopher Lloyd for portraying so many of my favorite characters during the 1980s. On television as Rev Jim Ignatowski on _'TAXI'_ and in movies as John Bigbooté in _'Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension'_, as Doctor Emmett Lathrop Brown in the _'Back to the Future'_ series, as the incredibly creepy Judge Doom in _'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'_, and as Kruge in _'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock'_. Ultimately, I think I saw more of him in cinema during the 80s than anyone else, even Robin Williams and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
We finally got real Star Trek back and the whole audience left the screening I was in, in tears. It was emotional and wonderful and I got hugs off complete strangers because we'd all been so moved. That's what being a Trekker is all about. That's what's been missing since the reboots started.
I loved Star Trek Beyond. I enjoyed it much more then the previous two reboot Trek movies and I think this film series finally found its Star Trek identity. Favorite Star Trek movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Least favorite Star Trek movie: honestly its a toss up between all Next Generation films.
As a huge Trek fan, this movie did break quite a bit of ground. A lot of things made me say WOW! It's not about the spoilers. For instance, when the Enterprise is Docking at the Yorktown, you get that sequence of that starbase reveal. It was visually stunning. I loved seeing how the Enterprise maneuvers within it. On a side note, does anyone else love plane spotting? Imagine the concept of just sitting at a starbase and going Starship spotting.
I wish that there was a Voyager movie. I'm probably alone on this but Voyager and Enterprise were my favorite of the TV series. My favorite characters in those shows were B'Elanna and T'Pol. They're both so relatable to me and I'd love to see them in a movie!!!
I enjoyed it, but this movie really doesn't feel like Star Trek to me... It's more like a cool space-themed soap opera. Again, it's not a bad movie at all. I just hope they don't think this how all future Star Trek movies should be.
The original show (and even Next Generation to some extent) was basically a soap opera in space with action here and there. This movie is the first time it felt like I was watching Star Trek and not just a flashy space franchise.
Hey Jeremy! The thing that made me go "I didn't see that coming" was the Sabotage sequence. It kinda redeemed the first trailer big time. I was smiling and cheering the whole time, this scene was brilliant, fresh and the most fun in 2016 action movies IMO.
I loved the new movie. I went to the cinema for it twice, which I don't do for just any flick. The new enhanced focus on the crew and their interpersonal relationships and the glimpses of the sacrifice they make by leaving their lives behind was a welcome improvement. The downright tripled amount of dr. bones' screen time had me going "well about bloody time!" there was a beloved character played by a very good actor who had been shunted to the side these last 2 movies and the amount of mccoy snark and sass especially when paired with spock's half-vulkan stoic nature had me doubling over with laughter. All around a very satisfactory and extremely enjoyable star trek movie. I warmly recommend it.
Favorite: First Contact Least favorite: The Motionless Picture I only have memories of being bored out of my skull in TMP, at least the others had some good scenes in them. First Contact is great because the Borg always creeped me out and Picard's personal stories always struck me as the best ones. There were some scenes that were a little cheesy, but Trek has always had that cheese factor
Loved the villain, loved his motivation and background. It made so much sens - the Federation is a Utopia, which tends to make people soft and weak. Given the character's history, his motivation made a lot of sense. It was also really simple so they didn't have to spend a lot of time developing it, which worked for the action pacing. I have to say, if you 're a fan of the more recent TV shows, you'll probably like his history a lot.
I'll tell you what surprised me, the space station Yorktown! WOW was that place breathtaking or what?! Easily the most amazing space station in all of sci-fi. And also, the inherent structural instability of the USS Enterprise's design was finally showcased in this movie. Having all the most important parts of the ship like the saucer and nacelles held together by the thinnest parts of the ship makes it a HUGE and EASY target for anything. The saucer is basically a giant laser magnet and the nacelles were sliced off the ship like it was nothing in this movie! (No shields or in this case enemies that don't give two shits about shields=instant death) Though the sheer amount of redundancy in the ship's systems sort of makes up for all this. I will say it makes for a pretty unique starship design.
yeah I agree...some people have said "Into Darkness" was crap but i disagree, I loved the action sequences in that film. But one of my friends said that what made the Original Star Trek so great was that it was the thinking mans sci-fi adventure, and that certain quality was lacking from the first two of this new time line, but Beyond restored some of that quality which i really enjoyed. This film wasn't as adrenaline filled or as excited as Into Darkness, but i don't think it was meant to be. But i still enjoyed it non-the less
megamar I actually liked The Force Awakens and Revenge of the Sith. Sure, RotS had GOD-AWFUL dialogue and writing, but it was still a lot of fun. TFA was likewise a fun film, even if it didn't tread any new ground creatively.
Trek is really about television. The movies probably aren't representative of Trek at its best. With a few exceptions, like TWOK. Of course, Wars has a few TV series too, like Clone Wars and Rebels. Which have some fine episodes, but couldn't stand up to the best of Trek on TV. Personally, I am a fan of both
In my opinion this is easily the worst star trek movie of the rebooted series, The villain has no real motivation for what he is doing other than to just be a mindless bad guy, when his true intentions are revealed they don't justify anything he does, he contradicts himself in saying unity makes people week because his whole fleet is destroyed because they are too unified, and none of the action has any weight because the bad guy feels fake and cliche. The other villains in this franchise had good reasons for doing what they were doing and that made those movies better.
Wolfheart - I'm glad you liked this movie and it ultimately boils down to opinion on what you think star trek should be about. To me, a villain who just goes insane and feels he needs to kill everybody because otherwise they will "grow weaker" is just lazy writing especially when they have such a huge pool of great star trek villains to pull from. Star trek is well known and has aged well throughout the years because of its roots with spectacular writing and having the cast be put in intellectually engaging situations where there is no obvious line between right and wrong. The main problem with Krall is he is so obviously evil and simply insane that there is no way I could sympathize with him or even put much thought into how his character made me feel. Which lead to every scene he was in boring me to death. If this movie were just branded as an action movie like fast and the furious I would not mind this as much but I feel when they use the name star trek they bare some responsibility to mentally engage the audience since star trek has such deep ties to scifi and psychology.
+MegaCplayer You say you dislike how "simply evil" he is, but for me that was part of what made me like him. What started out as probably good intentions and an inability to change with the times became warped and twisted (alongside his appearance) to the point that Krall and his actions weren't even recognizable as human anymore. He went from being an honorable patriot to a beast whose actions and thoughts became almost completely alien, which made him kind of terrifying for me. Of course, everyone will interpret his character differently, but I thought he was a great villain, certainly better than those of the two previous movies.
I think this is the first review of Jeremy's that I can't fully agree with. I'm not a fan of the old, old Star Trek stuff, nor have I seen it. But compared to the last 2 movies, especially Into Darkness, this one is worse in more than one way. First of all, the villain was boring. I'll take Khan over "Krall" any day. And of course Krall had to be someone getting revenge on Starfleet because they betrayed him or something. Hmm, where have we seen that before? Also, the sabotage scene was so predictable and corny. It was kind of enjoyable, but the moment the music on Jaylah's ship scene came on, I knew it was going to tie in somewhere. This movie was pretty disappointing.
I couldn't agree more. it's a solid action movie, but the villain, while well-played, was incredibly weak. Also, I hated the way Jayla was acted. It felt like a high school play
Honestly, I just saw that movie and I think it's one of my favourites so far. As you said, it brings that old star trek vibe and it also has action, it's funny, exciting... It's quite perfect
The movie is horrible. There is nothing in it that ties to previous Star Trek series and movies. At no point in the movie could I care about any of the characters. They felt lifeless to me, especially the supposed antagonist Krall. All the action scenes were just noise.
I loved the begining scene of the movie, where Kirk is recording his logs. I was so relieved, yeah its going to be like Star Trek! This is the best of the trilogy for me. Where the action follows the story, not the other way around. And Jaylah is an awesome addition!
I saw Star Trek Beyond and it gets the characters and feel of the Star Trek universe so right that I love it. I'm an old school and TNG fan, I loved the moments when Star Trek got philosophical: Case in point my favorite episode of TNG is "The Measure of a Man" and that was confined to a starbase!
I agree with a lot of this, and I'm glad not everyone is bitching because it had the director from Fast and Furious on it. I thought he did a damn good job with STB, action wise, character wise, and story wise. Sadly, I didn't see the last reveal until it was right in front of me, but I did see an element that I knew was going to come into play later. I just saw it yesterday, but I'm hoping it was successful. I can do with another one.
Fav: WoK, Votage Home, First Contact and the first two Abrams. Least fave: the final frontier and Nemesis. Looks like this one borrowed a small element from WoK: Bones and Kirk having a Birthday drink, but they inverted it like they inverted the iconic Spock self sacrifice scene in the last film. I also loved all the Spock-Bones interactions.
Jaylah manages to be both badass and sort of adorable--very fun to watch, which isn't easy when you bring a new character into a series with a well-established set of characters (and they don't get more well-established than these characters). If they're really going to retire Chekov instead of recasting him after Anton's death, she'd make a great addition to the ensemble.
As someone who has watched all Star Trek movies and TV shows, I freaking loved this movie. I liked the previous two movies, but this one is by far the best of the 3. To me this is an Awesometacular movie and probably in the top 3 list of my favorite Star Trek films now.
I understand why the "wow factor" (or the lack of it) is relevant to some people, in order to rate a movie. Movies like "The Usual Suspects" and "Sixth Sense" really became classics mostly because of it (allied of course with a smartly written plot). Personally I don't give that much of importance for the "wow factor" because I'm the kind of person who likes to revisit a good movie several times. Thus, for me, the most important factor in a movie is the 'revisitation' factor, that property of a movie that makes me enjoy it more and more, each time I watch it. That's the reason why "Star Trek Beyond" will certainly be in my collection, while "Sixth Sense" is not (though I like both of them).
1. Wrath of Khan 2. Beyond 3. '09 4. Into Darkness (I've only seen those four movies and TOS, but I am trying to watch everything before Discovery hits in January). I actually kind of loved Beyond, especially after Into Darkness was pretty disappointing (it's great we can just skip it now - if this movie ignores it, so can I). It's been said a million times but Beyond really felt like a two-part TOS episode with a huge budget. The characters were all the best they've been in these movies, Kirk finally felt like Kirk the optimism is back, all the crew members working together to get shit done, and more Bones (my favourite) than the last two.
I'm glad you did a review and enjoyed it. I saw the movie twice during opening weekend. I loved it, however I didn't think the villain was as strong as you did. More in the vein of Nero, except this reveal of his identity comes almost too late. The actor playing him was wasted. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite/least favorite Trek film. I won't pick The Final Frontier as least favorite because there are many good character scenes between Spock, Bones and Kirk that are worth seeking out. I also have a soft sport for Insurrection because it's part of my childhood.
I love this reboot! This is a throw back to the tv series! 50th Anniversary after all! Go see it fun, entertaining and can't wait to see what they can do for the 4th one without all the restraints Lin and Pegg had to deal with! They love Star Trek and it showed with the characters!
Great review, but I will point this out: Jeremy, when you said there was no "wow" factor, for me, this movie was THE MOST WOW I have seen, especially among Star Trek movies...maybe ever. Now, of course and clearly, I haven't seen as much as you have, and maybe that's why, but I would like to make a counterexperience point, if I may.
Thanks for giving us your thoughts on it! Favorite would have to be the first one, and I have not seen the new one yet, but hopefully soon! I've seen mixed reviews of it with Chris and John, and your seems to be the most positive about the movie. I wonder what the experience will be for me
my favourite Trek movie is either Wrath of Khan or First Contact. Beyond is definitely the best of the new JJ series. It balanced the feel of old school Trek for the hardcore fans, and the action that new fans crave. The Enterprise got its ass kicked AGAIN, but then it does in just about every Trek movie.
That nostalgic moment, though...I watched an episode of the original series just hours before I went to see the movie, and that nostalgic moment hit me HARD.
I grew up with "Star Trek" in the mid-'80s, so my fave will always be "The Next Generation". I also like "Voyager", but never cared for "Deep Space Nine" too much. I found Abrams' first effort insulting, and skipped "Into Darkness" since I never liked "Wrath of Khan" either. As for the rest, my favorites are probably "The Voyage Home", "The Undiscovered Country", "Generations", "First Contact", and "Insurrection".
Dude you should totally do a Wrath Of Khan review and just in general should do some more Retro movie reviews, So you can give your opinions and it's a great excuse to watch old movies that are still great
Love the Krull reference. It's what I thought of when I heard the name. Loved the tributes to Nimoy. It was formulaic and predictable but I still really loved this one and want to see it again in theaters. Favorite is Undiscovered Country. Least favorite is The Motion Picture
I saw this movie and I thought it was awesome! Idris Elba was the actor who played Krull, and his makeup effects were superb! The action and cast were amazing! Go, J. J. Abrams!
Ah! Finally!! You got to it! Haha. I knew you would, but I was dying waiting. Stoked you loved this movie. I did too! Such great action and so much heart. You hit it right on the head. It blends old and new perfectly. I think the biggest wow factor, for me anyway, was the incorporation of a certain song with a certain action sequence. Holy shit that had me PUMPED! Great review for a great movie! Can't wait to see it again. Thanks Jahns!!
Favorite Star Trek Movie: First Contact. Least Favorite: Insurrection. Favorite Show: Voyager (with TOS really close). Least Favorite Show: Tie between DS9 and Enterprise.
Thank you Jeremy for not spoiling the small details such as the actor of the main villain, these are the things I really like about you!
R.I.P Chekov,you'll be missed 😪
😓😓💔
Whyyyyyy
I thought Jeremy would mention him. I guess I was wrong :/
"And to absent friends." And he's right in center frame.
God, what happened to Anton Yelchin was so fucked up.
Javin Gibson Did you just say someone deserved to die?!
Which timeline doe this event takes place? Is it after Palpatine's defeat or before?
This is star trek not star wars haha
you are such a fucking idiot the title clearly says star trek not star wars palpatine is not from star trek he is from star wars you fuck
takes place 20 years before episode VII
+Thebaldgamer *Face Palm*
Its call sarcasm buddy.
Hey guys, spoilers:
Jared Leto is the Joker in Suicide Squad.
Fuck you
the heck man how am I supposed to enjoy this movie
Those are just rumors dipshit. Its gonna be Jack Nicholson again makin a cumback!
+The Crazy Wolf Nah, Heath Ledger is gonna return for sure!
no they officially confirmed that marot robboe is playing the joker
Simon Pegg is the man, he knows how to write a Star Trek movie.
i want to see kirk and q
Thank you. I was waiting for a mention of his name when Jeremy was acknowledging how the movie manages to bring back the heart of Star Trek whilst still maintaining the now obligatory Hollywood actionfest. Kudos.
wait what lol q is TNG
He is also wrote The Cornetto Trilogy with Edgar Wright
Simon Pegg should also write the sequel
Too many words👍
I watched it in 3D and didn't get sick at all. And I get extremely sick on roller coasters etc.
Maybe it depends on where you watch it, how far away you are from the screen etc.
+MsBuchnerd That is true! Because maybe if you were sitting in the middlish front part, you might.. or maybe you had indigestion....
at least the camera work was better than jason bourne. i made the mistake of watching both movies one after the other. you don't see a good movie than go see a bad movie it ruins your day.
yea that Jason Bourne movie gave me aids with their camera work
I thought Star Trek Beyond was amazing. A love letter to everything Trek. Really good stuff.
I liked that little nod they gave to George Takei when Sulu goes over to his husband that no one saw coming.
@@Starwind87 Yup, stupid move. But "woke" ... that's all that matters
Technically they won the first two battles so you're wrong.
to be fair though the enterprise is not designed for combat. its made for exploration, not war.
I think Beyond is the best of the rebooted movies so far. With the past two I did not really feel that bond between the other members and you were right that there were no huge life lessons. With this it is the best of the new and the old. Plus we did not have to sit through 2 hours of lens flairs. God I hate those.
star trek 09 is the best star trek movie ever
The movie was pretty intensely cliche, there was nothing unique about this movie, I still enjoyed it but it was very predictable. The lines "Unity is our strength" then the villain replies with "no, it is your weakness" is the most cliche and overdone lines in movie history, and the whole movie reminded me of that line.
+classic hersh _"star trek 09 is the best star trek movie ever"_
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) - Really? That's quite an unusual choice.
My least favorite Star Trek movie was the Force Awakens.
r u fricking joking me lol
my favourite was the one where they kill voldemort *SPOILERS*
Nah man, star trek: rise of the silver surfer is the worst one
Naw man Fan4star Trek was worse than Rise of the Silver Star Trek.
Star Trek: Civil War and Star Trek: Dawn of Justice are pretty good, tho
Hey, now the comments can stop being complaints about how Jeremy hasn't reviewed Star Trek Beyond yet
Thank god.
But what about Shaun the Sheep!?
somerandomdude3366 Good lord, not that shit again
Every comment is now about why Jeremy hasn't reviewed stranger things. ResidentSleeper
How is knowing the actor a spoiler? I haven't watched the movie yet I know it's Idris Elba
Oh, dude, SPOILERS! PFFFFFfhf;jasdhf;ajsdhgf nlijasdfhbgfliuadfhg;plisdhfda
+Jeremy Jahns but.. But.. I kept it well refrigerated..
You know nothing +PMD221
triggered
+User every character is played by an actor, so therefore even if you had Danny Devito as Kroll... It would play out the same. Am I missing something.
Review Stranger Things!
Yeah that was a really good show
yes!
Love that show. One of my favorite shows of all time
Yaaaaasssss he needs to review it
I just can't see him doing that. But then...I have seen stranger things...
So neither Jeremy or Chirs Stuckmann is going to see Ice Age CC? That's when you know you've fucked up
LOL!! abt time people give credit to that movie now!! ice age needs Justice!!
Because it looked bad just from the trailers alone
they're going to dogshit on it anyways
+Yuvi Singh my guess Jeremy would give it T-Minus. And Chris would give it a D.
It's terrible
I really enjoyed it. Way better than Into Darkness.
I still liked into darkness more khan was just a fantastic villian. I respect your preference.
Not to hard to beat into darkness
+Joe Man khan wasnt khan though its like they made a completely different character and gave him khans back story and named him khan. It is really out of place because of how similar the other characters actually are to the original characters
i liked into darkness the best
+Gamer Extraodernair thats the worst one lol
new video.
i predict will buy on blu ray.
good job
You can figure that from the thumbnail
You just skipped ahead to see the rating.
+LordVader1094 well if he doesn't like the movie he looks all pissy in the thumbnail
Alex Kerley But there's multiple ratings for when he does like it.
I felt like this movie was just...filler. Like it didn't feel like it was on as grand of a scale as the first two movies, and it just felt to me like an extended version of a tv episode instead of a feature film.
spoiler: jon snow is still alive
You don't say
But hold the door
youknoenufinjonsner
spoiler: Han Solo dies
Fuck you
this is easily the second BEST STAR TREK movie ever
#4 for me after Ricardo MontleKahn, Whales and Borg.
undiscovered country, first contact, Wrath of khan, this movie
Third best for me. Undiscovered Country and Wrath of Khan were better IMHO.
We can all agree that Nemesis and Insurrection are the worst though, right?
Tom Leonard Nemesis is definitely the worst.
Probably everyone just relaxed after JJ's stroboscope, that shaky cam wasn't a problem
Nope, check out my review.
I totally agree with you.
The real spoiler is that the villain is none other than Jeremy Jahns... that was the big reveal! Congrats Jeremy!
SW "didn't seen coming" moment was Luke becoming a Jedi to defeat the Empire, ok?
Were you even born when that happened? lol
+Mad Genius u didn't see that coming?
+Nexus2Eden Nope.. Lol
+ron burgundy How could you not know that was coming after Luke destroyed the first Death Star.
Anyone else think that the "buy it on Blu-Ray" rating could use a sound effect? All of his ratings have some sort of FX except that one...
Best? Wrath of Khan by far. Felt like naval combat from the glorious age of sail. Least? Star Trek V or Insurrection.
Star Trek VI was my favorite
I always thought of it as a classic style naval battle too plus the Shakespeare quoting by khan just made the movie so badass
Bom Cabedal I have seen all of them in theaters (except maybe 1, I was a toddler at the time and don't remember)
This is actually my favorite of the 3. It was better written, and it was more interestingly directed than the other two. There are some breathtakingly beautiful, poignant.
Can you guys give me a thumbs up.
Here you go.
+James Atkins
Much appreciation Mr. Atkins.
👍
Why? Giving you a thumbs up would be irrelevant.
+Damjan Plamenac
Why not?
The Motion Picture: Good time, if you're drunk
The Wrath of Khan: Worth buying on Blu-ray
The Search for Spock: Good time, no alcohol required
The Voyage Home: Good time, no alcohol required
The Final Frontier: Didn't watch it
The Undiscovered Country: Good time, no alcohol required
Star Trek 2009: Worth buying on Blu-ray
Into Darkness: Worth buying on Blu-ray
Beyond: Good time, no alcohol required
I'm so happy you made this one a week late. I saw it yesterday, literally last night. So I'm glad no spoilers were seen. :) I wish you would do this more often.
FINALLY! I was tired of people bitching about you not reviewing this movie.
Star trek: First contact is easily my favorite film in the franchise
I'll start by saying I agreed with everything you said here, and knew exactly what scenes you were referencing vaguely. This has actually been my favorite of the Abrams rebooted universe, sadly. With the tragic death of Anton Yelchin i find it doubtful they will be making any more. I really loved how they had him running around with Kirk when everyone was separated. But I can't deny one of my favorite things overall about this movie were the musical nods and character throw backs to the original series
Star trek>beyond>into darkness.
Controversial
agreed
Galaxy Quest
Star Trek First Contact
Space Balls the toilet paper.
Beyond > Star Trek > Into Darkness
^
The other 8 are in betwee. before others ask I've been a fan of trek since Season 3 of TNG, I've watched all 6 series and like Jeremy I'm a huge wars fan too (having cosplayed Jedi, Sith and Starfleet (TOS and TNG era)
what's your reaction to Starbase Yorktown? i feel it encompasses the optimism of Star Trek...
EPIC
I think it looks a lot like the planet from Guardians of the Galaxy (forgot the name). Crossover maybe? xD
I thought it looked like that squared city from Inception XD
Still cool though.
Are you talking about Xandar?
Agreed. Totally feels like that futuristic optimism that we love Star Trek for. Plus I like the escheresque design of the base.
I was really surprised by how much I loved this film. the characters all got to show their mettle and the humor was upbeat and consistent
Why does everyone hate into darkness?
I don’t. I loved all three movies
Jimmy McMuffin crybaby fans that are upset saying that it’s a copy of “wrath of khan”, basically the same reason people cry about the force awakens
Boba Fetty you probably loved the force awakens until the internet told you not to crybaby fanboy lol
What was there to like? Please speak up! Don't be shy because others didn't like it! If YOU like it,
then enumerate why you liked it! Was it all the shinning lights and flashes and running around
and loud noises for no reason that was compelling?
The villain is Jakar from Babylon 5
Hah! That's what I thought as well! Good eye.
We finally got real Star Trek back and the whole audience left the screening I was in, in tears. It was emotional and wonderful and I got hugs off complete strangers because we'd all been so moved.
That's what being a Trekker is all about. That's what's been missing since the reboots started.
I actually stayed through to the credits so I could see the "For Anton"
I loved Star Trek Beyond. I enjoyed it much more then the previous two reboot Trek movies and I think this film series finally found its Star Trek identity.
Favorite Star Trek movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Least favorite Star Trek movie: honestly its a toss up between all Next Generation films.
of coarse this movie is good. It isn't directed by Jar Jar Abrams.
*of course
Force Awakens hater here! We have a force awakens hater here!
Are we the same person
Boooooooo!!!
They see Me rollin anyone with more than one brain cell can see how shit SW The Feminazi Awakens is
As a huge Trek fan, this movie did break quite a bit of ground.
I was bored throughout every moment of this film. Time to end it.
It still feels more like Star Trek than the previous two movies.
Kept you waiting huh?
ST2:WoK > ST4:TVH: > ST8:FC > ST13:B > ST3:SfS > ST11 > ST6:TUC > ST12:ID > ST5:TFF > ST7:G > ST1:TMP > ST10:N > ST9:I
review Charlie Bartlet in memory of Anton
Or Green Room!!! Great movie
Zakory Brown i want a more iconic movie
Snow piercer maybe ?
wrong movie , chris evans not anton
That was Jamie Bell. It's weird how everyone seems to mix the two up.
As a casual, Star Trek Into Darkness was the best
Hey Kahn. Hey, hey Khan. Buddy?.... Stop it.
Khan: Hah, no.
punchy punchy
[End]
Favorite: First Contact
Least favorite: The Motionless Picture
I only have memories of being bored out of my skull in TMP, at least the others had some good scenes in them. First Contact is great because the Borg always creeped me out and Picard's personal stories always struck me as the best ones. There were some scenes that were a little cheesy, but Trek has always had that cheese factor
is it bad to say that I enjoyed this way more then The Force Awakens
Even though I'm a bigger Starwars fan
different opinions
Different animals. I mean movies. Don't know where animals fit into this.
***** agreed
Saying that you liked anything way better than TFA isn't saying much in my opinion.
Different strokes, dot dot dot, huh Morty?
Loved the villain, loved his motivation and background. It made so much sens - the Federation is a Utopia, which tends to make people soft and weak. Given the character's history, his motivation made a lot of sense. It was also really simple so they didn't have to spend a lot of time developing it, which worked for the action pacing. I have to say, if you 're a fan of the more recent TV shows, you'll probably like his history a lot.
Every time he said "Trek" I herd it as 'Shrek'. Dunno why. Don't ask.
Don't do drugs. :D
makes me want WAFFLES!!
swedish
get out of my swamp!
I will say it makes for a pretty unique starship design.
i liked this movie but not the same as star trek into the darkness it was way better
yeah I agree...some people have said "Into Darkness" was crap but i disagree, I loved the action sequences in that film.
Wussup fellow koftes xD
Havent seen Beyond yet. But I wasnt a big Star Trek fan, Only heard of it. But after Into the Darkness, it actually got me a lil interested in it
+Tha Crazy Wolf Same here.
In Argentina we just got it this week, great movie, Star Trek is still fresh
Star Trek > Star Wars
Ha, that's a good joke you got there.
+Titantron9000 The Trek movies are worth the time to watch, but the television series' are where it's at. Especially Deep Space Nine.
+TheRefractingOne The last 3 Star Trek movies are WAY much better than the last 3 Star Wars movies.
megamar I actually liked The Force Awakens and Revenge of the Sith.
Personally, I am a fan of both
just finished the film. I FREAKING LOVED IT! Least favorite, The Final Frontier
Favoriteist, The Undiscovered Country
In my opinion this is easily the worst star trek movie of the rebooted series, The villain has no real motivation for what he is doing other than to just be a mindless bad guy, when his true intentions are revealed they don't justify anything he does, he contradicts himself in saying unity makes people week because his whole fleet is destroyed because they are too unified, and none of the action has any weight because the bad guy feels fake and cliche. The other villains in this franchise had good reasons for doing what they were doing and that made those movies better.
+Ethan Kuvent Those pesky opinions...
agreed
I liked it =)
Wolfheart - I'm glad you liked this movie and it ultimately boils down to opinion on what you think star trek should be about.
Of course, everyone will interpret his character differently, but I thought he was a great villain, certainly better than those of the two previous movies.
freaking loved it. I can watch these movies back to back multiple times and enjoy it more every time
It was...meh
Always look forward to your reviews!
And Jaylah is an awesome addition!
the film was so boring
Perfect blend of New nd Old.. Nd The 'Antagonist' is honestly one of the Most Awesome Actors in the current movie World!!!
The bit I liked the most was meeting Sulu's family, I was blubbering like a baby when you seen them meeting up for his shore leave!!
1. Wrath of Khan
2. Beyond
3. '09
4. Into Darkness
(I've only seen those four movies and TOS, but I am trying to watch everything before Discovery hits in January).
I remember hating this movie
Because they destroyed the Enterprise , which was the superhero of the past few movies
Dude I thought that it was it for the enterprise in the first act.
I really enjoyed this movie and this makes me want to watch the original tv series. Some things were predictable but overall it was a great movie.
I saw it twice because I enjoyed it so much. All the character relationships were reminiscent of the original cast, most enjoyably Spock and McCoy.
Thanks, I was debating whether to bother with STB Now I'm in. I'll check it out this weekend.
Finnally you review it , I've been waiting for so long
Favorite Star Trek Movie: First Contact. Least Favorite: Insurrection. Favorite Show: Voyager (with TOS really close). Least Favorite Show: Tie between DS9 and Enterprise.
Thanks, Jeremy. As a "Star Trek" fan wary of these new films, this review was helpful.
