  • A John Deere 6400 tractor and a John Deere 348 Square Baler complete the mechanized portion of Rolling Oaks's first hay cutting of the year. Marcia Johnson guides the baling parade around the pasture. She also had the task of adjusting the baler after the season's first few bales "exploded" after being kicked.
    Some photos: basicbill.com/p...
And a short video of the baler kicking while in the turn at the end of the field is here: basicbill.com/p...
A big thank you to the folks at Rolling Oaks Farm for the invitation and access to the operation.

I grew up next to a field outside of Carlshamn in Sweden and got to see many agricultural machines working for a whole 16 years. The baling machine was cool, among other things, because it was like a "rolling drum machine." Also what memories and nostalgia it brings. 🚜🔊🥁🎼🎶⏳️❤️😁

Thank you for a walk down memory lane. Spent some time in upstate New York working on a Dairy Farm as a youngster. Catching Hay bales and stacking with a very familiar set up like this. I think people should work on a Farm at least once in their life's . Gives you a complete better understand where your food comes from and what it takes to get it there. Had many cuts from the hay,bee stings and the farmer laughing at a me fighting hay bales behind that kick baler. A great year of employment ,would gladly work on a Dairy Farm again.

Low Budget Scale Modeling. my husband also worked on a dairy farm in upstate NY growing up. He mentioned catching them in midair and tossing them up to be stacked. It was owned by a well known family that makes cheese and still does.

Listening to that kick baler brought tears of joy,...and pain. Farmer Bloodworth thought it was the funniest thing watching a greenhorn fight with hay bales. He was right thinking back. It was funny,it just took twenty something years for me to see the humor.
My wife & I raised our son to work. Although we didn't know of any farms for him to work on. That would have been a great lesson in life for him.
Your husband must be a decent man. I had forgotten about this post. Made me laugh this morning, thanks.

Me and a friend would stand on the trailer and stack as it kicked. But Dad would run faster and some times you would catch a kick to the back or head!!! Loved ever minute of it!! No kid or man ever hit like a 100 lbs 3 string from a kick bailer! Lol ...made us tuff.

Next baler they will invent will be one that throws the bale onto the stack from anywhere in the field. Must admit it was the most amusing 'farming' video I have ever watched - whoever thought of it must have wanted there head examined.. Would have loved to have seen it 'throw' one on a turn and miss altogether.

    • @BFDdriver

watch it again and see at 4:40 that the bale thrower leans inward while the wagon is in a turn and straightens up when the turn is completed....it wont miss even in a turn

monte casler is correct....in order to run that 348 baler properly, you need to keep the windrow toward the farthest out end of the pick-up head, and drive at a ground speed so that when you count how many times the gooseneck comes up around, it should spit a bale out after every 13th or 14th time. otherwise you're wasting your time and fuel and beating up the baler for no good reason. Gerald is wrong b/c not everybody can get hay rows dry enough in large rows, and not everybody has a second rig that can run ahead of the baler and rake doubles together.

you have to take into consideration the wagon you can't be making fast turns at the end of the windrow with that rig. And you don't know how rough the ground in that field is. typical of young farmers they want to race their equipment across the field. shortens the life of your equipment.

Cost. I had an old barn, cattle on the first floor hay overhead in the loft. Two people and an elevator can put up a lot of hay in the barn
We would stack to the roof perhaps 18 20 feet high.

@@glenncountry its inefficent last i checked, farming was a Commercial enterprise not a hobby. Time is money and wasting both fuel and time (not to mention additional hours on the equipment and tractor) is very silly. If someone offered free advice that saved me money and made me twice as efficient i wouldn't be dismissive of that individual.

Too slow, you should be running 2-3 times faster ground speed. 36-40 strokes per 3' bale is too many and the baler and tractor certainly have the capacity. Double up the windrows and you'd be just right at the ground speed she's running. Nice looking hay though!

Actually the baler wears out faster a lot faster because the plunger is going back and forth 2 or 3x as many times as it should per bale. And a constant steady feed on the baler will give it a lil resistance an the machine which is good less likely to fly apart or have metal hitting metal inside. No reason to go that slow.
