    Addressing all of the comments:
    I tried doing it again, to ensure it wasn't just a fluke. Trying to simply access a folder shared on Win 10 from Win 98 "as is" yielded the predictable result of displaying a message saying that such folder doesn't exist. After retaking all the steps from my own video I was able to successfully connect both machines once more, though I should note seven extra things:
    0) I should have probably noted in the video itself that you CAN in fact just edit the .vdi file of your virtual machine (the "Hard drive file"), without really going through any of this. You just have to mount the .vdi file as a drive using something like Daemon Tools Lite or similar software. If, for whatever reason, you can't or don't want to do that, read on:
    1) Kind of obvious, but at 5:40 in the video you can see me looking at Sharing Options on the Windows 10 host machine. In addition to the stuff I change in the video you should also make sure that all the other options are identical to mine as well. Basically, you've got 3 "sections" - Private, Guest or Public (current profile) and All Networks (the one I'm messing with in the video). Go through all three and make sure things like "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" are turned ON, just to be sure.
    2) When you right-click Network Neighbourhood on your Windows 98 machine and go to Properties, you should see a list of installed network components (it's visible in the video at 4:59). If on that list you can't see "File and printer sharing for Windows Networks" (like in the video) you should consider adding it. To do that, click the "File and Print sharing..." button that you can find in the same window, underneath "Primary Windows logon" option. In there just make sure both checkboxes are marked, apply changes and restart your machine - the "File and printer sharing for Windows Networks" component should be automatically added to the list. If for some reason it's still not there you can add it manually by clicking Add -> Service -> File and printer sharing for Windows Networks.
    3) When sharing a folder on my Windows 10 host machine I gave full access to "Everyone" in the sharing options (which you can see at 2:49), but also gave full access to "Everyone" in the Security tab (one to the right from Sharing tab in folder properties), which somehow didn't make it into the video. You'll probably have to add the group "Everyone" yourself, as it's not on the list by default (just click Edit -> Add... -> type in "Everyone" and then click "Check names", then click Okay and it should be added to the list for you).
    4) You should consider disabling your Antivirus/Firewall for a little while, if you're still having trouble. Just remember to turn it back on once you're done.
    5) Some people noted that it works better for them to share a folder on the virtual machine and access it from the host, instead of the other way around, like I'm doing it in the video, so if everything else fails you should try that as well. Should you choose to do that - simply create a new folder on your Windows 98's desktop, name it something simple, go into its properties, then into Sharing tab (The tab will be missing by default and to make it visible you may need to enable file and printer sharing, which I described in advice number 2 in this comment). In the Sharing tab just click "Shared As:" option, don't change the name or anything, and the Access Type should be "Full". Leave the password field blank for convenience. While trying to access your machine from Windows 10 via regular file explorer (In My Computer, or "This Computer", as it's called in Windows 10, on the left you can see a list of all available locations, like Documents, Music, C drive, D drive etc and Network - go to Network) you may be asked for login and password - just use your login credentials from your actual Windows 98 machine (the ones you use to login when you boot it up). It works for me as well and I'm able to share files just as well as with the original method! :)
    6) You can TRY leaving your Primary Windows Logon as "Client for Microsoft Networks" instead of changing it to "Windows Logon". I don't think it should matter all that much, but it's worth a shot.
    I don't really have any more advice for you, it works like a charm for me and I can't see anything that I missed that could potentially give you errors, as I didn't do anything extra specific that wasn't already covered in the video to make it work. Perhaps you're scoffing at some detail you thought was insignificant? Or maybe you have a regular Windows 98 instead of the Second Edition? (I'm afraid that the original edition of Windows 98 may need some system updates for file sharing to work properly) Maybe you gave your virtual machine too much RAM or processing power? (256MB RAM tops, only 1 CPU) Maybe you named your shared folder using weird characters that BSOD Windows 98? Etc. And remember - undo all of the changes once you've copied all of the files over, just to be safe!

I for one am genuinely grateful, regardless of the level of success I am having due to different settings and environment to your system. Will persevere to succeed. UPDATE!!!! Just cracked it !!!! Wow, just wow. I needed a way to get files from my win10 PC to a retro build I'm putting together without burning copious CDS. This works perfectly once the LAN drivers are installed, and I'm so surprised 98 and 10 can interface. I was concerned this was only going to work on virtual box, but I can confirm this 100% works on, out the box real hardware and software using 98SE and Win 10 build 19044.2965. Very much appreciated!

    You have forgot a very important part. In the VirtualBox machine settings under "Network", you need to change the mode of the network adapter from "NAT" to the bridged connection, otherwise this will not work because in the NAT mode all the guest's network traffic is masked as host's. Without that, even the 5) point from the pinned comment wouldn't work.

    What version of Windows 10 Pro are you using? I'm using 1809. I got this working and noticed one thing. Going into Network Neighborhood on Windows 98SE and clicking the Windows 10 machine doesn't let you in, but if you map to the shared drive or folder it does. Just in case anyone runs into that problem, you can't access the machine directly as it appears in Network Neighborhood and see your share drive or folder...doesn't seem to work that way.

    • @TheScarface43
      @TheScarface43  2 года назад +1

      If you want to do it only once, or at the very least really infrequently, then I'd honestly just recommend mounting and editing the vdi file. If you want to share files more often or do it with a real system instead of a virtual machine, then hosting a little FTP server should be the most reasonable solution - Samba springs to mind, but I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding tons of tutorials on how to set one up. Cheers

    • @TheScarface43
      @TheScarface43  3 года назад

      You can indeed open them, but I'm afraid you can't really add new files to it this way - you're only allowed to browse its contents. BUT! You CAN in fact edit the .vdi file with something like Daemon Tools by mounting the file as a drive. I probably should have mentioned that in the video as well ._.

      I haven't tried it on Windows 7, so I'm not sure how to help you. You may want to try sharing the folder on the Win98's side and try finding it on your host machine, instead of the other way around. Given that Windows 7 is now quite an old OS it should actually be way easier to connect with 98 than when using Windows 10.

    why network? it's so complicated.... why not use THE EASIEST WAY??
    1. make iso with "nusb33" inside (win98se mass storage device) with ultraiso or etc and mount as cd in vbox
    2. prepare usb stick and format with fat32, add usb in vbox setting
    3. run win98 install nusb33 and restart if ask for driver just browse c:/windows
    DONE !

    I changed the "network & sharing" settings as you said, deleted & recreated the folder multiple times but it still requires password

    • @raniakhalil4893

      & even after I changed the settings & restarted the PC it still says in the properties window that other users will need a password to access the folder while the settings are saved as I changed them

      You should probably read my pinned comment if you haven't already - somewhere in the beginning I mention that you could try using something like Daemon Tools to mount your .vdi file and access it like a regular drive. Hope that helps!

      network access. From the drop down add everyone. Permission level read / write click share. Then every thing else should work. Hopefully. I tired it and as soon as my virtual box hit my folder it BSOD lol good old windows 98.
