  • Retired Air Force combat controller Dan Schilling speaks with David Hookstead about the insanity of the Battle of Mogadishu - also known as Black Hawk Down.
Dan served in Air Force's tier one unit the 24th Special Tactics Squadron. It's also referred to as the 24th STS.
Dan has also written several books, most notably "Alone at Dawn." The book tells the true story of fellow 24th STS member and Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman. Chapman was killed during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan when he was left alone on a mountaintop against enemy fighters. John fought bravely four hours by himself, and Dan breaks it all down.

I’ve read the book ‘Alone at Dawn’ twice and the first time I read it took only a day and a half. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I commend everyone involved in it’s production.

My coworker at Cannon AFB was Jeff’s supervisor before he went to the 24STS. Very sad loss when he passed.

This guy looks like a gentle grandpa. Then you hear him speak... oh my. I had to google photos of him as a younger warrior. I wouldn't wanna mess with him.

Did Dan Schilling do a few lines of voice over dialogue in BLACK HAWK DOWN? His voice sounds familiar to one we hear over the radio. "Green light! Kilo One-One!" And another in this clip where the voice-attributed to Col. Harrell but it's not Željko Ivanek, who played him-"ETA base, momentarily."
