This man is a hero yes... but his actions make him more than that... with the video evidence MSGT Chapman is a true legend. I hope someday, I get to shake this man's hand.
I get what you are saying, but I suspect the SEALs were allegedly not happy with this decision because he did not use team tactics. Kamikaze tactics are generally not considered honorable in the Western tradition. I think there is another side to this.
What bugs me is that his team leader was also awarded a MoH in this engagement. But, as proven by the video footage, Chapman was abandoned, and then fought on ALONE until killed!! Why was his leader awarded a MoH - when he was nowhere in sight after acknowledging a SEALs wounds (and leaving the dead PO too) in "abandoning their position" at 5.02??
While reading Alone at Dawn and doing some research on Christmas eve back home in Johnstown, PA I learned that John Chapman is buried in Windber, PA not far from my mother in law's home. I searched for quite a while yesterday until I found his grave and paid my respects.

very tough to watch. battle is mind bending and i never want to second guess what went on. with a video of it, its hard not to ask questions for a loss of life.
Chapman wasnt even supposed to be on the helicopter. He volunteered at the last minute to get on and he wasnt supposed to get off the helicopter when it dropped the seals, yet he did. I worked with a few AF CC while i was in the Army and they are higly trained professionals. I highly doubt i could have done even half of what Chapman did. Im glad the true nature of his actions came to light so the world could know of just how truly brave he was. It is an extremely difficult video to watch, especially as a veteran. Many people also dont know that that was his first time experiencing combat! Rest easy MSG!
Theone82 “Chief Slabinski still expressed skepticism that the new evidence - gleaned from software that can isolate pixel representations of people and help track their movements - was reliable” yea I bet you want people to think the footage that shows an airman take point while you sit back and watch, is “unreliable”.
@@InWitheNew for what tho? Popping smoke while bounding away from the enemy while “chappy” lay dying in the bunker? Pretty sure some statements have been modified to put him a good light. Only to have predator footage released years later
Master Chief Zabinski (Team Leader) has made some statements that this footage prove to be completely false and coupled with US Navy officials actively attempting to block TSgt Chapman's MoH is absolutely utterly disgusting! For that alone, I am grateful this video exists and shows the world the truth!!!!!!!!
politics, the navy didnt want to acknowledge that they left chapman behind, you would think "men of honor" would man up, but not so. chapman actually lead the seal team in gun fire (funny how they make fun of the "chair force" for being too soft, but an airman mans up to lead seals in gun fire, something to think about
Jesus's son lol... no. Just no. SEALs are legit for the most part. I don’t know much about SWCC but they seem like they’re for sure overrated. The group that has the most unaddressed issues are the rangers. If i had to rank the most common spec ops it would be as follows: Army SF is at the top, then Raiders, SEALs, PJs CCTs, and lastly Rangers.
I’ve been a Air Force combat controller for 12yrs and still serving. John Chapman is a legend and makes me incredibly proud to wear the scarlet beret. Would love if you did a video about combat controllers someday! RIP Chappy
I actually worked with John on a couple of missions shortly before this. As far as I'm concerned the enemy NEVER defeated him. Rest In Peace Brother. 🍻
@David Pryor I am retired Air Force myself. During my career, I personally knew a few CCT, TACP, and PJ Airmen. These career fields are small, and as such, they tend to know each other. My own career field was a small one, and by the time you reach TSgt or so, you know a good number of the other NCO and SNCO's. All this being said, it's not a stretch AT ALL to believe that a person who knew Chapman might comment on the video showing his heroic actions that both ended his life, and saved others.
@@ShyaMiss Thank you for your service. I was actually in the Army but I was part of a joint task force. We simply mixed and matched personnel to accomplish whatever the particular mission was. Air Force Combat Controllers tended to be more adept for that particular job so we leaned heavily on them. It took me a lot of time and a lot of alcohol to muster up the strength to watch this.
America needs men Like John A. Chapman, to inspire other Americans to to give their very best to this Great Country. John is looking down from Heaven and watching over his family, and over his beloved U.S.A.

It takes a special kind of person to go through this kind of hell for a dozen people you might not have even met before. As a former Airman, I have nothing but the highest respect for my fellow Airman, MSgt. Chapman. I've seen this video about 6 times now and it never gets any easier to watch knowing that he was alone. I know the SEALs were under fire, but to know they left Chapman is in a way maddening to me. I know it was hell for everyone but still. Took the Army to complete the mission and rescue the SEALs and recover Chapman and PO Neil Roberts. We should all be grateful to Chapman for his heroism and undying loyalty to his teammates.
The most disgusting part of the whole ordeal is not even the mistakes the SEAL team-6 guys made, it's the desperate efforts to cover it up afterwards. It's quite plausible that the SEALs had mistaken the dead body of the original SEAL they came to rescue for Chapman as they retreated under duress. Clearly, the team leader was not aware that a drone had captured the events of that night, because some of his claims were just false. Instead of the Navy to acknowledge the mistakes and move on, they disputed the notion that Chapman was left behind alive, and they did everything possible to frustrate the Airforce's attempt to get Chapman's awards upgraded to the Medal of Honor. At a point, the SEALs even went as low as disparaging Chapman by saying he went against orders and jeopardized the mission when he charged out of the helicopter and took off to engage the enemy on his own. The SEALs were on that ridge for all of 3-minutes before retreating, Chapman fought there all night. The Army lost 3-Rangers in their fight to retrieve Roberts and Chapman, all because the SEALs botched the original mission in which Roberts was lost. Yet, all these guys were worried about was protecting their reputation.
@@brainoverbrawn3404 The SEALS, in that fight, really discredited the Navy and all the SEALS with their actions. They belong to the Wall of Shame. CMSgt Bob Powell, USAF (Ret) 1965-2000 and a tour in Vietnam 68-69 and 4 years at the Pentagon.
@@rvnmedic1968 Yea, and word has it the Seals tried to block Chapman's MOH, apparently because they didn't want the story of them leaving him there alive getting out. Makes you wonder what their official narrative of what happened on the top of that mountain would read like if this footage didn't exist and everyone just had to go off their word.
Oh man, this is heavy stuff. MSGT Chapman answered the Call of Duty and showed courage under fire RIP to a true hero. In terms of people having this kind of fight in them, I agree that you actually have to be in the situation. I was Army Infantry and in Afghanistan 2011-2012 and even though we didn't get much contact, I had heard the stories from Marines and other Army guys, once the fire fights started, guys would curl up in fetal position and cry. I'm sure those people who curled up in fetal position never thought they would do that, but they did, it took the REAL situation and not training to really show someones guts.
Fight, Flight, or Freeze. Your sympathetic nervous system doesn't care what you think you should be doing. I don't fault the guys who curled up into a ball. Not saying you do, just saying I don't. Their brains just weren't wired for soldiering. There's strategies for overcoming the sympathetic nervous system response when it's not productive, but I'm not sure the military teaches them. The guys who curled up could have probably used some of that training.
@@mikegamerguy4776 First time under fire as a young sailor I pissed myself, did not realize it until after the shooting stopped. I got called "hop along" by the Sgt. who was leading the Marine squad that were escorting me on my mission. Years later on the Enterprise a gruff sounding evil looking Gunny comes up behind me and says, you still hopping along I see. The burns to his face made him unrecognizable to me as the young baby faced Sgt. but that evil sense of humor stuck with him. One veteran to another, I'd like to think if I was in Chapman's shoes I'd do the same thing, but you never know what you are capable of until you are in that situation. My heart goes out to Chapman's family, and I hope they know that there son is an American hero. Although I know that doesn't help with the pain of losing a loved one, he is my hero
he told death to take a walk around the block because he still had some fight left in him. truly awe inspiring. I know he’d deny the title full heartily but that man is a hero, plain and simple.
This hurts to watch, I have nothing but the highest thoughts and respect for this man, these types of men are by far the face for the word hero and the word unselfish. Such bravery deserves nothing but the best and the heroism should be recognized by anyone and honored. MSG Chapman, I salute you! Edit: Every situation is different and every person is different, from my experience those that can do things like this is the ones that are at peace with themselves and that knows that when there are none or close to no way out they give it all and have the mindset of causing as much damage as possible and just give every breath they still have in them. It is easy for "us" in the couch to talk the talk but for those of us with years in the military and several deployments and combat situations probably understand my point or what I try to say. The bottom thing imo is that only if you're at peace with yourself and can accept the "shittery" you're in can go that extra mile, sometimes you win but most often you lose so if you can save a friends life in the process that will be the reason to bring out that strength. I can't even begin to put into words the emotions I feel while I sat here and watched this over and over. Saving the lives of 23 men most of whom he never met but just being his countrymen was enough for him to lay down his life to save all of them. This man definitely deserves to have a movie made to not only honor him but to show everyone around the world this is why you don't wanna fuck with the U.S.A. simple as that. Plus I think there should be memorials all across this great nation honoring this great man. God Bless you John Chapman and may you rest in peace, Semper Fi.....

Sing your death song and die like a hero......going home".
It's easy to act tough, it's easier think we are tough, even with a lot of training. It's only when the occasion calls that we truly what we are made of. Sorry he lost his life but glad he at least got the legacy of showing what he was made of.
To the parents of this extraordinary American, my sincere condolences. Nothing can replace the loss of your son. But he honors you, his comrades, and all Americans by his sacrifice and bravery. There’s a lot of controversy over this due to the fact that Naval Special Warfare command wanted to block his Medal of Honor bc it would mean admitting to leaving him behind. The team leader also received the MOH for his actions on Roberts Ridge but ultimately no fault to his own he did leave him behind and he has mentioned it has haunted him and continues to haunt him probably for the rest of his life. Another Air Force man who was a pararescueman which is the military’s best combat medics was given the Air Force Cross just under the MOH for his actions of treating wounded while at the same time fighting off enemy combatants, he was shot in I believe the liver or some vital organ and refused treatment to himself to treat his rangers. Jason Cunningham died 30 minutes before he was extracted. His MOH upgrade has been reviewed many times over.
Thanks for sharing this. Chapman's sacrifice was incredible and heart wrenching, but we so often forget how many other brave men lost life that day and put others before self.
I've seen this footage a few times now. What this man did stirs up something profound, you can feel it like a weight on your chest. Words really can't capture the gravity of his actions. It's incredibly moving.
I'd love to tell these pampered people who say they're brave for some social posistion they take watch this video ,this is what real bravery looks like ,this man faced certain death and met its challenge head on ... 99.9 % of all humans can only aspire to be a tenth of what this man was , May God rest his soul .
A quote I heard that has become important to me is that you will never know what your life was about, what it meant. For the meaning and value of your life is only determined by those who have come after when you’re long gone. No one will know if they would be prepared for this, until their day has come.
And you hope you never find yourself in that kind of situation so you will never have to find out. God knows I hope I never end up in such a situation. Maybe you would rise to the occasion, but maybe not. And that's a question you will hope you never have to answer.
Hats off for Mr Chapman and his solo valiant stand. You, Sir, are my hero!! Not some sports player!! Thank you for giving us, as a Nation, your last heroic efforts and your life blood!! I weep uncontrollably every time I see this video or a reaction to it. I honestly don't know if I could be that guy. I've been taught and learned by myself to be generous my entire life, but the sheer degree of determination and selflessness displayed in this video.....no one could every say they could display it until they were actually in the same situation. Unfortunately, air support was limited during the op and Chechen fighters had more experience and prep at that time. My buddy’s dad was one of the pilots shot down. He died trying to recover Marcus Luttrell. God Bless these men.
very tough to watch. battle is mind bending and i never want to second guess what went on. with a video of it, its hard not to ask questions for a loss of life.
Also unfortunate is DEVGRU’s involvement.

The way SEAL command blocked Chapman's MOH nomination for nearly 2 decades is just disgusting.

RIP Chappy

Handed them their own asses, he did.

Yea, and word has it the Seals tried to block Chapman's MOH, apparently because they didn't want the story of them leaving him there alive getting out.
Makes you wonder what their official narrative of what happened on the top of that mountain would read like if this footage didn't exist and everyone just had to go off their word.
That's not fair
Man has a real spine that seldom ever know.
I did not realize I had been shot in the ankle but we managed to finish the job and they got me home safe. Years later on the Enterprise a gruff sounding evil looking Gunny comes up behind me and says, you still hopping along I see. The burns to his face made him unrecognizable to me as the young baby faced Sgt. but that evil sense of humor stuck with him. He died in Afghanistan doing what he had always done, protecting those under him. Those men exist, and to quote Patton, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." I lived because of that Marine and his squad, a debt I can never repay.
