people who complain about imogen’s vocal imperfections are completely missing the point. she’s meant to sound strained and off sometimes, the song is not a happy one and she’s using these vocal cracks and strained sounds to fit the mood of the song. that’s something imogen does all of the time.

This took my breath away. This song means so much to me. My memories from it is from when i was 8 or 9 years old, my parents had just gotten divorce, and we had just moved from my hometown across the other side of the country. One brother became depressed and an alcoholic, and my other soon moved out. This song i remember specifically from the long, 10 hour driving when we vitised our hometown again sometimes. We had this song playing towards the final hours of the ride, when it got dark. There was really something special with those rides, so emotional, and the disconnection from my roots became so clear and it hurt so much but i was just a kid and pretended to be fine to not be a burden, but when this song came on in the car, in the middle of the strongest feelings of loss, i felt validated and not so alone because the melody and her voice was so inline with how i was feeling. I'm from sweden so i didnt understand what she was singing but with this song you dont really have to, you feel it, you just know. And music is, of course, a universal language. This was 10 years ago and i feel never stop feeling this song in any less deep level.
+Mahogany Sessions Sure, i think it is important to share raw emotions and stories even on the internet sometimes, because thats how we all connect - so its okay. Absolutely a positive one, or at least bittersweet. It reminds me how music can have such a powerful helping impact in life :) xx
+Thought Bubble That was a beautiful response to a beautiful song. I wish I'd had this song when I was going through the same thing (at the same age too, as it happens). Instead, I poured all my emotions into metal! \m/ It wasn't until much later that I gave myself permission to actually feel them. Better late than never. :)
1:34 the perfection of them using just their voices in duplication of that slight vocoder “waver” and pitch up that appears on the original recording…that’s a perfect example of why this is a masterpiece and it’s everything and i love it. i will never not feel emotional when i hear this song, and not because of memories it triggers…it just does something to me.
I think My Darling Is Gone is pretty sad. Especially when you put it in perspective of his girlfriend Donna. She lost the love of her life never to see him again.
hearing her sing this without the gloves or the effects she normally uses is so cool, she's so incredibly talented in so many ways and the chorus sounds so amazing behind her
the Catch in “you won’t catch me around here” is my absolute fave part of this song, live or recorded. and you can feel the catharsis when the ones who have that line get to say it, because it happens once in the song and the feeling is so final (esp before mmm watcha say) you wont CATCH. me around here
She was one of the first artists that changed my soul... She is so good. Seeing Jason Derulo and now Ariana Grande using her songs makes me happy but wish she has more credit. When I heard Ariana’s new album I heard “goodnight and go” and immediately tweeted and said “it’s Imogen Heap’s song!”
I didn't think I'd ever hear an acoustic version of this that captured the original recording's emotion and subtlety, and this completely blew that notion right out of the water. Wonderfully arranged to support the lead vocals without drowning the softer melodies out; that's usually quite a struggle for choirs. Kudos to everyone involved!
I cried listening to this as the choir provides in my mind, a nice steady solidarity that life is structured around with society, don't show your flaws, be perfect and on time, and Imogen was the truth of it, sweeping, soaring and diving in her vocals with the pure emotion and gravity melding with the solidarity behind her. We try to conform to a society to be 'accepted' but in truth we're emotional creatures and we have a vein of life inside us that can't be quieted by 'structuring of the norms to society'. Lovely performance by all.

This is beautiful and Imogen is so talented. For everyone that doesn't know, Vocoder (the effect that used on the record), is essentially the melody of a live performance of vocal for example being manipulated by the harmony of notes/chords. What Imogen is doing here is replacing that effect with real people singing those chords/notes.
I know this song super well, I know every word, every note, every pause. I could sing it for karaoke without skipping a beat (I'd probably out of breath though!) but this is the first time I ever heard it and it made me cry. All the different voices melding together with Imogen's kind of made me feel like heaven broke open a little bit! Way better than a synthesizer!!! Absolute chills!

Its refreshing to find musicians with a true sense of nature with how your actually suppost to right a song and how it sounds. Whenever I listen to music n the radio I allways look for anything that I can relate toin the lyrics. When I was listneing to 7 years once, my mom started to cry during it. A reason for that stresses upon her loosing her mother (my grandmother) a while back and also due to the words "i wish i could see my children once or even twice a month" because I never really visit her at times. Each person has their own feel for a songs notes and lyrics. I find the most emotion in the song Goodbye my Avril and Youth by daughter. I can relate o the music from my personal character I made. I didnt make my character depressed for it to be a weakness that people could pity her on, i made her like that so I can learn to understand the most important feelings that someone has, so I can help others dealing with the same problem overcome them. I know this is totally unrelated to the song itself, but im saying this because of what music can do to supress emotion. This song is an ideal target to supress emotion through emmense ammounts!
