There is actually a very good explanation for all this what appears to be amusing behavior. The current generation and a substantial percentage of previous generations have been influenced by social media to attach their self worth to the outward image they project on social media and the interactions(likes) they generate. Conséquently they go to great lengths to look "cool" and to seek approval (likes). The same way you wanted a new pair of shoes to walk around school and have all your peers praise you is the same psychological process they are in under to look the coolest online. (my opinion, no research, no data)
