  • In the second episode of Total Recall, Anna Nemzer tackles the difficult subject of the Nord-Ost hostage crisis. While it wasn't the first act of terror in modern Russia, this one took place in Moscow during a performance of a Broadway-style musical. This was the first act of terror during Putin's rule and in this video you will find out how he turned a tragedy that affected many families into a political advantage for himself while not bringing about any meaningful changes to terror prevention. This is the first installment out of two which deal with how Vladimir Putin used national tragedies as excuses to usurp power in Russia.

Great work again, Anna. Russian people have been lied to and been kept in the dark for so long and they deserve to know what has happened in the past and what is happening right now.

It is why the people are protected by 1) an independent judiciary, & 2) judicial inquiries, by which they can exert public control, thru accountability, over state organs.

Very interesting to hear about the details of this event. I remember reading about it, seeing television reports, but not this level of detail.

Sobering presentation of the facts and their sequencing. Most disturbing is how popular opinion is manipulated by "strong men", "defenders of the people" to seize total control of the public space. A sense that a cataclysmic moment is in the offing ....shades of 1917-1922, 1989-1991?

Yes, Putin had a very long time to refine his callous and calculated approach to wielding absolute power. This was always his ultimate aim.

At the time western news sources presented it as just another botched hostage rescue, something we're all too used to.
