    I grew up in Leavenworth and lived up the Chumstick. I always wondered why the rock was sandstone. Our property is how climbers get to the Chumstick Snag rock formation which is sandstone. Thanks to watching your three lectures on this area I now know where it all came from. Thank you so very much.

    Looks like another gorgeous morning - and an uncharacteristically smooth trail, at least early on. At age 76, I'd guess that sane people over age 30 would know there's a reason for switchbacks. MUCH easier than simply going straight uphill as some seem determined to do.

    Lol... this is why you needed this Chumstick local geography major(old) townie to come on your field trips 😋... could name the ridges and mtns for you...in exchange for geologic stratification.....plus, my hubby is a biologist so added natural history and ecology info.
    But...townies aren't allowed! ( for good reason...but , I was talking into my cell phone the whole time time telling you guys what you are looking at!)

    I'm exhausted just watching you all climb up that hill. Thanks for letting us accompany you in an easier fashion. The boys pointing out toward the Icicle Creek Canyon with their extended fingers and straight arms reminded me of Sacagewa on the bow of a canoe in a book I had as a child.

    It’s amazing to see what a tight group of budding geologist this group has become. They may have entered this class as individuals but my guess is there are some friendships and/or professional peers helping to shape the future of geology research. What an amazing experience to be a part of your class Nick! I bet all your students look back on their experience with fondness. I would. I’m just glad to learn vicariously through these videos. And I am learning a lot

  • @bruceinoz8002
    @bruceinoz8002 3 года назад +1

    Interesting thing at about 36 minutes into the video.
    Almost bare hillside with token trees trying to get a foothold. The trees appear to be aligned with what could be strata boundaries composed of different material with a "better" permeability to / retention of water, hence the "attractiveness" to plant growth.. But those putative "strata" appear to be almost horizontal, unlike the fancy rock formation in the right foreground.
    Looks like it was a fairly lively piece of real estate at some time.
    Or, am I reading too much into it?

    at 37 minutes , where the hill starts climbing again you can see straight rows of trees growing across the slope, this would be a good area to look for ledges that caught more soil than the surrounding white slopes.

Just checking cuz I'm like waaaaiitttt that looks like some blue, and not typical gray markings. If it is blue, why is it blue, wasn't expecting blue.

    Binoculars or spyglass on field trip is crucial as a magnifying glass - So where did the rest of the dip go before erosion? I always try to visualize the area in the complete view before weathering and erosion. I am surprised your do not have a 7.5 min. topographic map with elevations and name of the quadrangle and township

    I would suggest taking a topographic map with you on your field trips. It will make it much easier for you to show exactly where you are in relation to the surrounding landscape. This of course can be done on a GPS with the topo maps downloaded to the device or just use your smartphone's map app, but that is cheating. I think all of the students should learn to read printed maps and how to use a compass.
