Jason is the second eldest Walton child. In season 1’s The Dust Bow Cousins, it is revealed that John-Boy is 17, Jason is 15, and Mary Ellen is 13. Also, Jason’s high school graduation is implied to be around season 3’s episode The Choice while Mary Ellen’s graduation isn’t until around season 4’s The Quilting. To me, it has always been clear that Jason is older than Mary Ellen. As for Erin and Ben, this one is definitely harder to differentiate. Though I do think Erin ended up being older. When Erin graduates from high school, John is talking about how quickly all his kids are graduating from school and Ben chimes in that he is next. I think for the first season or two, it is a bit hard to tell if Erin or Ben is older, but by about season 3, it is pretty well-established that Erin is in fact older. Here is how I believe the Walton children’s birth order is: John-Boy, Jason, Mary Ellen, Erin, Ben, Jim Bob and Joseph, Elizabeth, Miscarried Baby “Joy” .
Mary Ellen was really 14 or 15 then in real life. The first season Ben was really 13 and Erin 12. When they were older and Erin was very tall and Ben short they asked Eric Scott who played Ben if they could make him younger. He said yes. There were more stories they could have for him if he was younger.
Jason graduated from high school after John Boy, then Mary Ellen did. Jason was going to the music school when Mary Ellen was a senior. I liked Toni, she seemed real nice. When she and Jason married in real life, I was a senior in school.
I’ve seen John Walmsley in Adam-12, and Combat, TV shows, before The Waltons. He was a good Actor even early on. I’ve seen some of his music videos. Interesting about his wife, and family. 📻🙂
I really enjoy hearing about the actor s behind the series. I heard somewhere that Ellen Corby actually adopted one of the cast members. could you please do a show on that? Thank you in advance⁰p
They do make it pretty clear in a few episodes that Jason is older than Mary Ellen, in early episodes they don't make clear Ben and Erin except in the episode the Nurse Ben does state that he is next in line to graduate after Mary Ellen.
@@harperstacey9604 Granted but they have a daughter and even though their bond didn't last, nothing can take away from the fact that it had its good times!

Ben was older than Erin until Mary Beth McDonough grew taller than Eric Scott. Then they switched the birth order. Jason was always older than Mary Ellen.
It was always my understanding that Jason was older than Marry-Ellen almost from the very beginning. It was made very obvious early on that Mary-Ellen was 13 y.o., and clearly Jason was older than 13 just from a visual standpoint. Then Jason was the next to graduate high school.
Hey Judy which show is it were that family thinks that John took their silver but he pawned off his wedding ring to get tires for the family's truck. What is the title of that one?
I think Jason was supposed to be the older of the two, Jason received the scholarship to Klymberg in the Venture, whereas Mary-Ellen applied for nursing school half way through season 4 in "The Nurse".
Hi Marilyn and thank you for watching! In the episode you referred to, I believe was called The Last Mustang S5 E13 (which indeed was a stallion). The character of Professor Ainsley was played by Arthur Malet. I could be incorrect but the only episode that comes to mind that Earl played in was in in Season 2 in the episode The Journey; Earl made a cameo in a scene where the guest star of that episode is having a flashback of dancing with her husband. Earl played the husband in the flashback. Earl also was the voice of the adult "Johnboy" narrating at the beginning and end of each episode. Best regards!
It's none of our business why. As adults we all know that things happen in life and relationships change. I was one of the lucky, blessed ones who found one true love.
Jason was older than Mary Ellen. She was the oldest girl, but she wasn't older than Jason. It was John Boy, Jason, Mary Ellen, etc... They even said it in Season 1. John Boy was 17, Jason was 15, and Mary Ellen was 13.
@@nicoleh.6059 Thank you, you are right about that, in the episode the dust bowl cousins, The character who played, jobe, asked Jason how old Mary Ellen was and he said 13. You are correct. Jason was 15 at the time. Thank you, Nicole.
Judy Norton reflected on the series today, indicating that the show creator had the Walton children essentially play the ages the actors were when television series first aired in Sept., 1972 - she recalled Kami (Elizabeth) was 7; David (Jim Bob), approx. 9 or 10; Mary (Erin), 12; Eric (Ben), 13; Judy (Mary Ellen), 14; Jon (Jason), 16; and Richard (John Boy), 21. Adding Richard was 20 when filming The Homecoming. It does get a little fuzzy because, depending on the month they were born, David and Mary both born in '61 would have been 11; Eric and Judy, both born in '58 would have been 14..
Can we try to settle this issue of who's older than who? Somebody just said that Mary Ellen and Ben are the same age. They are in REAL LIFE, but not on the show. I know their characters weren't the same age. Ben was somewhere in the middle. The question was always whether or not he was older than Erin. In real life, it's different. Eric Scott (Ben) was born in 1958. Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) was also born in 1958. Mary McDonough (Erin) was born in 1961. On the show, there was never a question about Mary Ellen and Ben. Mary Ellen was always older than Ben. The issue was with Ben and Erin, because they were the middle kids.
Jason was the second child, which Judy Norton has stated in her own video series. Jason finished school only a year after John-Boy, and it’s clear on “The First Day” (s3e1) that Jason is second oldest.
I recently watched "The Easter Story" from the end of season, in which Mary Ellen is in the 8th grade. Mary Ellen is 13,Jason is 14, and John-Boy is 15 in "The Homecoming," and Jason is 16 in season 2's "The Gift". He is 18 in season 4's "The Breakdown".
Why anyone would think Mary Ellen is older than Jason is beyond me! In the Homecoming JohnBoy is 15, Mary Ellen is 13 and you can TELL that Jason is NOT 12, he's 14! So Jason is second in the family WITHOUT ANY DOUBT!!! Again, with Ben and Erin, it is VERY CLEAR that Ben is older than Erin! I have NEVER heard of ANYONE in the past question the birth order of the Walton children!!! Your theory about different writers does not hold water. My wife and I have just finished watching the WHOLE series, all 9 years, plus we are about to watch the second movie tonight. There was NO QUESTION AT ANY TIME that the birth order was not: JohnBoy, Jason, Mary Ellen, Ben, Erin, Jim Bob and his twin Joseph Zebulon, and Elizabeth. So I have NO idea where you got that mixed up theory of yours!!!
Hi Daniel, First let me thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I can tell by your comment that you are very passionate about the show and probably have a great deal of knowledge pertaining to it. However, I must tell you that though the age issue though not something that has confused you, it has confused many of the viewers. I have pasted a link below for you of a well known web forum pertaining to The Waltons where actual cast members of the show chime in from time to time. In this thread, the discussion is of all things, the birth order and how confusing it is for some. Thankfully Eric Scott, the actor who played Ben, is there to set the record straight. In the movie and the first 3 seasons, Ben was supposed to be older however in the 4th season the writers switch the birth places with Erin and Ben making Erin older. Also, as far as writers of the show getting things messed up, if you spend some time actually listening to the actors who played the Walton children, as well as the obvious flaws in the storylines over the full run of the show, you will hear them discuss odd stories lines, especially pertaining to the Walton 9th season and the movies and their words are that they can only assume the writers were not well acquainted with the show in early seasons. So my theory, as you put it, was founded based on information from those who were there unlike either you or I who simply get the pleasure of watching such a wonderful family show. Best Regards. waltonswebpage.proboards.com/thread/508?page=2
