I was getting ready to buy a 1x12 cab by Peavy for at home practice and have two options from peavey,
one is loaded with a celestion for $300 and the other peavey has the Blue marvel for $150.
After listening to this on really good headphones there is NO WAY the celestion is worth twice as much money!
Thanks for making this choice easy for me! I will get TWO 1x12 blue marvel loaded cabs for the price of one celestion loaded one!

My experience with these two speakers is that the Blue Marvel sounds nice at low volume but falls apart at high volume. Whereas the V30 sounds uninspiring at low volume and truly shines at high volume.
I also think the amp was eq'd to suit the Blue Marvel in this video, which ended up selling the V30 short.

@@luizdiaz5196 This comment is untrue. The Blue Marvel really shines at high volume and is a much better match for the Peavey Bandit. (The V30 🔊 is a horrible choice for the Bandit)
The Blue Marvel has a lot of headroom, is voiced nice and handles high volumes incredibly well. It sounds better at all volumes imo. The problem is like all speakers they need braking in.
If you have a Bandit that’s never been gigged then the 🔈 needs loosening. You could play some Jazzy big band music into the “power amp in” (back of the amp) with a blanket over it, that will help for braking it in. The blanket could keep the volume levels down in the room. Do this for 30 mins a day, at half volume for 2-3 days and your speaker will thank you.

All peavey guitar speakers sound better than people give them credit for. They are really cheap used because of it. Also it has to do mostly to the marketing, names, and visuals of them. If they gave them better names with better graphics they probably be more popular than they are.

Great comparison, thank you. Interesting to hear the different comments and realize how varied people's tastes are. I personally like the Blue Marvel between these two (especially on the lead channel - I think it would cut through much better in a band mix), but again it's just a matter of taste. I recently did a similar comparison with my old (mid-90s) Classic 50 410, swapping out 2 of the speaker with a pair of WGS G10Cs. The WGS speakers are very good IMO, but I couldn't tell enough difference to justify the cost of replacing the speakers, so I returned them.

I swapped a Vintage 30 in mine years ago (one of the first things I did after getting the amp). I immediately noticed that this already loud amp was even louder with the more efficient speaker. It's still in there. If I had known this beforehand I would've sought something that might be less efficient and would break up (contribute to the tone) at lower volume. Nice job in the comparison but they both sound pretty similar to me.

I have been actively searching the computer and internet for this one comparison. In hopes of hearing what a Blue marvel would sound like with the master of tone in the generations of music that has been the dominant speaker of the years of 50s 60s and on through the 70s and on. There are many specific speaker needs met by more modern and more expensive speakers that are given to different dimensions of effect and power. Yet, that they both sound very good in this setting. Simply makes me move forward in the opportunity to purchase another peavey amp with blue marvel speakers and the difference between the Sheffield and the other eminence speakers offered by amp companies can be comparative to these speakers now.

I've generally thought that most Peavey speakers including Scorpion and Sheffield did a fine job. Everyone likes to "tweak" their sound, but Peavey's speakers can hold up against the other guys. Cool vid! I like the sound of the V30 better, but surprisingly, not by much. The V30 is my all time favorite guitar speaker. I have 4 of them, but they're all in closed back cabs which is where I think the V30 really shines. But it sounds good in your C30.
I put a Weber ceramic Blue Dog 16 ohm 50 watt in my C30. Really like it a lot. Very balanced speaker that sounds good no matter what I throw at it. The other day I used my C30 to compare the Weber spkr to one of my 1x12 closed back cabs loaded with a V30 in it. With the amp on the ground and the closed back cab on the ground sitting next to each other, I was amazed at how well the Weber hung in there. Not really a fair fight comparing an open back amp/cab vs a closed back cab. They both sounded really good and I was really impressed with the Weber in the C30. Think I made the right choice. From what I've heard the V30 works very well with some amps, especially solid state or hybrids to cream them up some and take the bite off.. TSFT can be a daunting process. Steady wins the race. For the sake of argument though I have a Peavey VK100 head that I have tried on several cabs. I ended up with a Peavey XXL 412 with the stock blue marvel 144s in it. I think the enclosed cab tightens the sound up nicely and the extra mids in the speakers prevent the tone from getting too muddy. Just an observation.
Finally, thanks for not playing heavy gauge strings in drop C or an 8 string djent-o-matic through 15 death metal OD and distortion stomp boxes and expecting me to be able to hear a difference in speaker tones. LOL!

I put a vintage 30 in my classic 30 combo and it woke it up... the mids and highs were brighter... not sure if he's using the same settings for each speaker for a true comparison

Vintage 30. The blue marvel did not sound bad at all, but in comparison, it sounded like there was a blanket over it. It did not have the articulation in the eye and that the v30 has.

Nice comparison, i was thinking that the Peavey one would have sounded different in a bad way compared to the other one. I was wrong the Peavey sounded just as good if not better in some cases. Now I'm getting the cabinet for the smaller mini Peavey invective

I won...I bought a Peavey Red Stripe Bandit with the speaker already upgraded to a Seventy 80 and it is sweet. Does wicked Peter Green tones...(".)

My 75 W viper finally kick the bucket after 8yrs., so I turned it into a cab, and plugged into my 6505+112, it sounds way brighter than my stock sheffield. I play them side by side,

The v30 needed more excursion. Ditto on break-ins. I wish there could be a happy middle of these two. (Or did I describe a CL80?)

Both sound good but could you redo this comparison playing hard rock and metal riffs as I am liking the Blue Marvel speaker here but want to hear how it reacts against the Vintage 30 in hard rock riffs

Wow, I actually had them backwards. I think I actually like the Blue Marvels better. The driven signal part sounded like dog crap to me in with the Celestion.

I have an older Classic 30 with the Blue Marvel and a newer Classic 30 with the 70th Anniversary G12H. The older one has Sovtek power tubes and Electroharmonics preamp tubes. The newer one has JJ power tubes and a mix of JJ, Ruby and an unknown brand (USA) preamp tubes. The older amp sounded cleaner, so I have been switching the tubes and speaker around, but the Blue Marvel always seems to sound cleaner, whichever amp its in, whereas with the G12H, the individual strings seem less distinctive, and the sound all runs together more (as Greg Koch would say - That's a technical term). I realize I have a lot of variables going on, but I wonder if the G12H has to be played at very high volume to be appreciated.

Exactly the comparison I was looking for. I have a 2014 Peavey Bandit 112 with a Blue Marvel... Wish I could hear the G12-T 75 as well but the Vintage 30 sounds better than the BM... a scooped mid sound compared to the BM.

Blue Marvel wins clearer top end without being harsh. Now what does it sound like with an amp it is not designed for that is the question. I never thought about them as replacement speakers. I will now.

Great Demo! Vintage 30 for me hands down! I swapped mine out in this amp with a Vintage 30 a long time ago and much prefer it. There is no comparison. The Vintage 30 is a much more articulate speaker with more sparkle and chime and defined low end where as the Marvel has a mid boost which makes it sound a bit muffled/muted.. from a sound engineer's standpoint the human ear hears the mid frequencies the easiest. It doesn't make sense to boost that range or frequencies. John Mayer has it figured out.. his Big Dipper Strat pickups are made with the mids scooped out hence the name to enhance the frequencies the human hear doesn't hear as easily .. the sparkle and chime and the deep low end.

FYI Both the V30 and the Blue Marvel have mid humps. The mid hump of the Vintage30 is articulated a little lower frequency wise than the Blue Marvel.
This makes the V30 very suitable for downtuned metal chugga chugga riffin´which is why so many metal guitarists use them,- they still cut through even with down tuning.
For any kind of rootsy or classic rock tone in more standard tuning the Blue Marvel is probably the better choice.
Neither is the "better" speaker,- different beasts for different tasks.

All I can tell you is that I have a U.S. made Studio Pro 112 from the mid-late '90s with the Blue Marvel in it. Even though it's an open back cabinet, the Blue Marvel sounds way too dark. I thought this could be something inherent to the actual amp circuitry so I tried a few different speakers over time. All of them brightened up the sound quite a bit. It seems either to be the Blue Marvel itself or maybe I just got a lemon?

  • @scottdematteo

Great video. I thought both speakers sounded great, but the V30 was more open and up-front, where the Blue Marvel sounded a bit more compressed to my ears. I listed with good quality headphones. I Have one of the newer two older classic 30's which I have Weber Blue Dogs in both of, but I recently got another Classic 30, one of the new limited edition ones which comes with a Celestion G12 V-Type stock, Im going to break it in a bit and see what I want to do. I know this speaker in my Fender 68 Custom sounds amazing!

Thanks! There are sound like microphone position is changed every time you change the speaker. The Blue Marvel sound like microphone is in far position, and V30 are very close:) I think it's because they have different resistion and sencivity

Kinda hard to choose. I suppose the stock speaker sounded better for the cleans, but too middy for the drive (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I like guys such as Paul Kossoff and Billy Gibbons who use midrangey tones) whereas the v30 opened up the drive. But having said that, the difference is subtle in my Koss headphones.

This is so surreal because I own both of these, and ONLY these two.
The blue marvel came in a Vypyr 30 that is long dead but I'm using the cabinet still. The V30 came in an Engl Screamer which also died by now. Again, I'm using the cabinet now. A few wires and you can use them with other tops.
I can tell you that driven by the same amp the blue marvel sounds much smoother and has more range while the V30 sounds much more gritty and cuts through multiple instruments.
I like the blue marvel to play alone much more while I prefer the V30 in a band setting.
