Modesto BurgerIM franchise owner feels abandoned

- Danielle Fraioli had a big dream: To be the owner of her own business. She and her husband spent more than a year cooking up that dream at a Modesto shopping center. "We found this franchise,” Fraioli said. “It was the hottest franchise of 2018." Fraioli decided they were going to open the city’s first BurgerIM and in 2019 that became a reality. "It’s really hard to put into words how exciting it was,” she added. “We had lines out the door when we opened. The dining room was packed from open to close." That dream was short-lived. It would quickly become a nightmare. Jason Marks reports.

What's with the obnoxiously loud music?
Bad audio mixing.
Democrats have short attention spans so they have to yell.
Agreed.
It's blaring , it's soo loud. These new journalists don't know how to edit video and audio, just write articles
To cover the trash story
I might be wrong but franchise sounds as good as renting a car for the rest of your life
I remember seeing BurgerIMs showing up on every corner in 2018 and 2019 in Sacramento, then seeing those same places close slowly. This video answered my questions.
Funny thing is the food was absolutely fantastic. Seems like their franchise model was unsustainable due to high up front costs, but the brand itself was solid.
@cs83 I agree. I ate at a BurgerIM a few times and I liked it. I agree that the model wasn't sustainable
@@cs83BurgerIM got their food from Sysco's specialty selection for restaurants.
yup used to eat at one byy the mall n suddenly it closed dowm
I think the same thing happened to the Papa Murphy pizza franchises a few years ago. Anyone reading this seen any Papa Murphys recently ?
I'm so sorry she lost her house. Thats just awful. She will rise again. Bless her. 🌺
from what i have heard its hard to make money in a franchise because you have to abide by their rules and standards and all locations have different amount of sales but the fees are the same whether its a flat monthly fee or a percentage
Classic bait and switch. The guy who masterminded this scheme is fully accountable and needs some serious time behind bars and reimbursement to the franchise victims. This woman should have been the epitome of the great American Dream instead of nightmare. I pray that eventually she may see the light at the end of the tunnel. She's relatively young and still has a shot once again.
Israeli business, they are experts at conning the world and committing crimes.
lol sorry but as bad as it sounds it’s her own fault. Gotta do your due diligence and unfortunately she didn’t
Right lol @jacobvelez91
@jacobvelez91 Yeah, it's definitely funny when someone loses everything because of a conartist. It's even better when you mock the victims.
In practice, Israel has refused to extradite its own citizens, including in cases where they have fled to Israel to avoid prosecution in other countries.
"Owning our own business working for ourselves" means NOT being a Franchisee.
You will never escape the trap you got yourself into since you will always pay exorbitant fees to be part of the Franchise.
You’re right, she should have opened her own burger spot
With the right Franchise it actually is a viable business, think of all of McDonalds locations around. 90% of them are franchisee owned
@@NeoGeeSame with Chic Fil A.
This franchise failed on it’s name alone. Doesn’t make sense.
Apparently, it's a Hebrew plural suffix. So hamburgerim is fractured Hebrew/English for hamburgers. It didn't make any sense to me, but a neighborhood who had worked in Israel knew what it meant.
Never heard of BurgerIM wonder where she found it
It's on Carpenter road suite f
That was the last location I heard they were at
They used to be all over Sacramento
Israeli company lol
It was actually really popular, especially out in West LA. There was one in Los Feliz & The Grove shopping mall on Beverly Blvd. Suddenly they both closed, the owner of one of my old jobs opened a burger shop in their old Los Feliz location.
Crazy how badly people involved with Burger IM were taken. Funny thing is we tried or local Burger IM and loved it. We went a few times, my bday, my daughters bday, everyone loved it. We planned a whole night around going to that Burger IM only to find out it had closed. They were open less than a year.
We had a BurgerIM in Indio a few years ago. They closed and said they were moving to a new location and never did.
I knew the problem at Israeli
MUSIC TOO LOUD!!! Geez
My family bought a couple of Quiznos franchises. The guys who started it were completely dishonest. They were in it to tap out as much money as they could, and then just disappear. They were terrible people. Not at all surprising to see the chain’s demise. Maybe 150 left?
What state?? My friend and his family opened in California and never made it to multiple stores. I read there was a lawsuit. But didn't hear if any off yall got anything back.
@@c7adventures376 I think there have been dozens of lawsuits. Different results. The shaddens were terrible people. Father and son team bought in early and played it for everything was worth. Took advantage of franchisees. Promised services that were never delivered. They are probably the reason the corporation failed.
funny enough one just reopened in my city after all Quiznos had closed down 10 years ago now.
@@Graahk-r8u that’s interesting! What city?
Israeli owner… LOL WELL THERE YOU GO.
The owner needs to be arrested and brought back to the United States to face criminal prosecution 🤷♂️
Israel probably won't send him back.
why do these people flock to franchises? Most of them are no good except for themselves. Just start your own thing. Franchises are stupid.
They think it’s an easy way to make a fortune. Business in a box - corporate does all the hard work. The franchisee hands over a ton of $ and hires a bunch of kids to run these places and a lot of them expect a passive income.
Unless it's McDonald's or Dutch Bros Coffee.
Who wouldn't want a business where the products were already developed and tested. Store design is set. Backend functions are already in place and all you have to do is turn the key.
"Just start your own thing" - someone who doesn't understand business
Because people (i.e. customers) in America are creatures of habit and like things that are familiar. Let's say "John and Jane" go to another city to attend some big event, like a concert. Afterwards they're hungry and want to get something to eat. They see two restaurants nearby - Tom's Diner and McDonald's. They don't know what they're going to get at Tom's, but they know what's on the menu at McDonald's. It's the same reason the movie studios keep cranking out sequels and remakes - it's easier to sell people on something they're already familiar with.
There are so many stories of foreigners rushing to open businesses in America, that end up burning Americans. There should be stringent standards for foreign entrepreneurial investors.
😢😢 they had a good thing at first. They were a mini burger specialty shop. But for some odd reason they started to switch it up and added big burgers to the menu.
There was a friendly married couple that open in Bakersfield and they went out of business and lost everything. You should do stories on more of the families that burger company took advantage of. 🤨🤨
A burgerIM opened in my town in 2019. Good burgers and shakes, but overpriced and gimmicky. I figured it wouldn’t last long. Closed three years later.
This is just so sad I used to talk to the delivery people even their bosses had to deliver burgers back then and they were struggling and going through all the stuff I feel bad for them cuz I really enjoyed their burgers and their food but unfortunately they could no longer deliver because of their struggles and that is so so sad this video proves the most their problems that I did not know about I feel bad for them
Period. Comma. They're things on your keyboard that you should consider using.

That's a run-on sentence.
Vwry sweet lady , i went a couple years vack during the burgerim craze and we went on her birthday and she brought her birthday cake and shared with all the people in the restaurant
$50k in and then another $600k ? I dunno, I think I can build a better plan for that money and take my risks. No such thing as easy money. I do know other franchises that require $1M , so it’s not crazy, but you gotta know what you can lose.
This does suck by the way. I feel for them, but did they know that 50% or more of restaurants fail? I just can’t understand sometimes, and maybe will not ever understand people, businesses and money.
That statistic works with non chain restaurant. You have a higher percentage to close when you’re doing all of the heavy lifting. The main reason chain restaurants rarely close or takes decades to close is because of corporate protection and support. They handle things like marketing and provide the building. She’s claiming they did not assist with support and other things that a franchisee is supposed to receive. BurgerIM isn’t closed, she had to give everything up.
@@Jonas-nf2bc that’s horrible!
I worked at one before the pandemic and it was awesome. Upon hearing the quarantine regulations, it closed down. No more BurgerIM. Fun place to work cause of the beer but also our bosses were a bit weird .
I remember going to franchise expos for several years, and every time the franchisors would do everything in their power to manipulate somebody to buy a franchise then and there, never letting them think about it. If they said “I need to think some more”, they were guilt, tripped for wasting their time. I love tradeshows like that, but I had to stop going to the franchise ones because of how manipulative they were.
What's the appeal of this restaurant? You can get a burger just about anyplace. This sounds like a pyramid scheme
That’s crazy, I almost invested in them shortly after college… I’m not surprised. They way I found them was due to them harassing my emails…
They’re Israelis
There were 2 in Columbus, Ohio. They only lasted maybe a year😢😮 The burger's were amazing.
1K fine for Oren Loni? WTH is wrong with this picture. I am sure Mr. Loni will find more people to take advantage of soon. What a bad person.
I went to it once in OC, thought it was horrible. Then a month later I saw an announcement that they were opening up some crazy amount of stores in the Bay Area, like 30 in 2 years…at that moment I knew it was shady.
I was really hoping for a happy ending to this story.
Good franchises aren't cheap. If you find a cheap franchise, look out what you are getting into.
how do you not do simple math to find out if this is a good investment? Frigging start your own burger joint for that kind of money for Pete's sake !
Just cuss dude 😂
That is a tragedy. I swear in a case like this. She should be entitled to the building and every single piece of equipment in it. So she has a fighting chance to be successful. 😡
One was supposed to open up down the street from me in a new minimall, had all signs, seats, tables , kitchen , bar and an opening soon banner. Never sold one burger or drink and the doors stayed locked. Soon the signs and interior disappeared and some new chicken franchise set up shop, same thing never sold a thing and the doors never opened, now it’s some ma and pop kebab place occupying the space . I guess it’s just lesson learned for anyone thinking of going into debt for a new unknown franchise !
I heard about Burgerim on social media, but never been to one. When the franchise wouldn't help, why didn't they take their own initiative and have a 1\2 price burger day or pass out flyers with coupon in the community.. I don't know, but better than letting it All collapse... I Wish them well~
There was a BurgerIM in the city I live in, went twice and the food was good. Than I went my third and last time, the food had a weird taste and my wife and I totally lost interest, especially with the prices. The BurgerIM went out of business about 6 months later.
Why wouldn't they have explained why the dude was only on the hook for $1k?
This is so sad..... Someone help this woman.... All she wanted was the American dream :/ She worked hard too.
I could be wrong but didn’t her and the other guy save their money working at a pizza place for forever to open this franchise? I really hope good things come their way.
Background music is intense…🤕😵💫
$600,000 to start a burger restaurant? Are you kidding??
thats actually cheap
@@noahmania2153 it would be cheaper if there wasn’t a franchise fee. Ridiculous!
I can’t get past the name. What is a Burgerim? How is it pronounced? To me, a burgerim sounds like a flock of elderly people, or a skin tag. “I got this burgerim on my back.”
😂😮 we always thought it was like.. " I Am Burgers" but backwards. Burger-IM 🤔
Burgerim translates to "many burgers" in Hebrew. The company was founded in Israel and still operates units there. The CEO Oren Loni is a thief and should be jailed for ripping Americans off
Feelings aren't real, gtow up and move on
The marketing must have been non-existent. I not only didn't know that business was in my town, I didn't know it even existed.
All franchises are "hot" until they aren't. Not the brands fault lady.
Wonder Who marketed this as the hottest Franchise ? A complete scam
I don't and will never understand buying into a franchise, it's not worth because you are not working for yourself, you're still working for a corporation.
I used to order from them they had really good burgers but eventually because they were struggling they quit delivering and I believe they moved to a different location I heard
BurgerIM's company song is "Hava Nagila" BTW
I've been to this burger I'm in Modesto the food is okay nothing to go crazy for
I remember seeing them in Norwalk, CA for four years and then they closed.
I really liked BurgerIM. It is ashame what happened.
Got to do your Googles. Just some good ol fashioned research and understanding business trends, markets, and analytics could’ve prevented this.
THE BACKGROUND MUSIC IS DISTRACTING
The days of starting a successful small business in CA are over. This state is for somehow trying to save money, buying property, selling when it appreciates, moving overseas before you're too old, and actually enjoying life.
i would go to get my bike gear and burger fix. Just saw it closing a few months back. 😢
We had a BurgerIM in my town for a while then after the pandimac it was shut down and from what i know it was due to not enoguh workers but i think this brings it all
We have them in my city and they are always empty.
Israeli company. Not the first time they bilked hard working Americans
I actually liked their food. Just so sad.
So people just stopped buying burgers?
The Franchise business model almost seems like a larger modern version of a Pyramid Scheme. I mean they sell you the dream, make you buy in, and then when you can't sell the product, you're stuck with it. You either sell it all and make a profit, not likely, or you face the financial ramifications and sell at a loss and still have debt to pay off. I feel for these people. I recall going to a few of these BurgerIM, which I actually liked, but yes, gradually they began to close down.
This place is in bad spot to
That sucks, the food is actually pretty good too.
How is this 100% some one else fault? Opening a business is basically gambling with a plan. Nothing is guaranteed, ever. So why is she now due "compensation"? Gimme a break. The TAXPAYERS are all on the hook for that $600k and more because I guarantee they wrote off all expenses/losses on their annual taxes too.
Can the music get any louder???
Kardashian pr guy was poster boy for Bay Area local spot

There used to be a BurgerIM in Norwalk, California. Thats now a taco place.

if you look at Burgerim's owner Loni Oren's face. he has con man written all over his face. how can anyone not pick this up from the start?
U should be a detective i mean seriously. And tell us more who we should look out for ???
Better than In-out.
Taking on a half million dollar leveraged obligation for something (I assume) they've never done before is not an advisable move. That's a risk you take with cash.
There is still one open as far as i know in ontario California, and there was one in corona ca that closed i been there its OK nothing special
Whereabouts in corona? I'm a native coronian and never seen one?
"...Israeli native..." Uh oh
Contradiction in terms.
I ate at BurgerIM in Dallas in 2021. The burger was cool.
The music is loud and distracting
BurgerIM didn’t have the money to run their company and it hurt their franchises.
This is our government for you.Punish the victim
needed the kirby item bounce song played over it.
I guess this is what happened to our local one. I don't know if it ever opened or not because Covid hit right about that time. That killed a lot of businesses. All I know is that we were curious to try it since it was new and walking distance and they had lamb burgers, our favorites. My husband stuck his head in once jusr to see if they were open, and the guy inside yelled at him. Not a good way to treat potential customers. I'd never heard of them before and I've never seen another one - had no idea it was a chain.
Sad that this poor woman lost everything. But restaurants are about the most risky business endeavor you can undertake.
Honestly I eat all over Modesto I think the location sucks
If you work there you get a burgerim job
Neurotic music, why does a newscast need such crazy noise? Downvoted and didn't watch
Bet he went to a business lecture that showed him how to scam people like that
how sad..
Since when does owning a business is not a risk? It’s like playing the slots. I don’t feel bad at all for them.
Ate there when it first opened . $600,000 start up?!? Location is ghetto af and shares a parking lot with the social security office. Bad location out of the way and too saturated with burger options around here anyway. Food was good though I do remember that much. 😢
Some more details on your news story would be better..
Half the price of a mcdonalds franchise for a franchise no one has ever heard of and the ceo is from a country will never extradite not that the US government was going to press serious charges. Dont be stupid with your money, stop getting scammed.
