My favorite Seat Packs are still the ones where you can just remove the dry bag and the harness system just remains attached.
I agree with you Dave. I think the cradle mount with a dry bag, both front and rear, are the way of the future and I have thought this for many years.

I've got one and 90% of the time I agree entirely, but I did have my dry bag fly out on one particularly long, fast and bumby descent recently and I'm less convinced now!
I like this too so you can use the same drybags for bikepacking or backpacking and don't have to change your packing regimen.

This looks nice improvement, I'm myself a bit reserved towards hardware that's not easy to repair yourself but I appreciate upgrading the ease of use. It's one of the most important aspects on any equipment.
I use Alpkit's older model of big papa seat bag and their exorail with it. The rail acts as a hanger and support for the seat pack and making it stable and really easy to strap it down.
Do you find fitting the Exorail a pain? The adaptor width is different from standard saddle rail width (or maybe it's the rails that are different width - either way, I find you need additional hands and tiny fingers to hold it in place and even then it's not a perfect fit). Certainly not the kind of thing you want to think about removing once it's on!
@@davidrowe8747 yeah, it is quote painful to fit and also needs a lot of force to stay put. Luckily its nice to just leave it on. 😄

Topeak have had models like these for a while, i use mine everyday for my commute, great piece of kit.
Try it for a while and let’s see how good it is. I have the Ortlieb panniers for bike packing and they are indestructible and waterproof! Nice new addition. 🤘🏼
The weight limit is up to 5 kg with the Seat-Lock system moved all the way back. Closest to the saddle the limit is 3 kg, the middle position can hold up to 4 kg.
I’ve been testing this bag for quite some time and did the initial review of it for MTB News. It’s a very versatile bag with a very well thought mounting system - I liked it a lot!
I'll be interested to see how it does with reducing wag/sway of a heavy bag. The ortlieb I have already seems pretty good with that, but I think that was the point of the hardware equipped version from revelate.
Seriously considering getting rid of my old ortleib and upgrade to this. The easy detach not only makes camp set up easier as you suggest, but will make it far easier to stuff when packing up.
Does your old Ortleib pack solely into the saddle bag or is there a removable dry bag? My Topeak has a removable dry bag liner which you can slide in and out, leaving the main outer attached to the bag. This mean you can do the quick removable at camp as you describe and also stuff it off the bike. Also has the added bonus of allowing you to stow wet kit inside the main bag, but outside the dry bag.
I have a quick release saddle bag from REI back when their bike stuff was called Novara (Novara Expanding Seat Bag). That thing was great. It was big enough to hold tools, extra tube, wallet without shifting around. It's not as big as this Ortlieb, but I am not a fan at all of putting a huge saddle bag on my bikes. I prefer bigger panniers on my rack that are lower to the ground since I mostly just did commuting and some light dirt road rides. I really wanted to buy a 2nd bracket so I could easily twist off one bike to another, but couldn't find one. The bag is actually still on my old mountain bike 8 years later still working. Unfortunately I don't think REI sells them anymore. It was probably less than half the price of this Ortlieb.
This is a very "Ortlieb" product with that new plastic hardware, reminiscent of the hardware on their panniers etc.... While I'm not sure about the lower part, the upper mechanism to grab the saddle rails looks really cool. I definitely appreciate seeing them take it in this direction and playing on their strengths while innovating at the same time.
On another note; how do you like that saddle Russ? My trusty B17 is nearing it's end and that Ergon has been on my radar....
I have 2 Ortlieb saddle bags with a different quick release system. The bags and mounting system have been very durable and the bags are water proof.
Use a paint pen to mark the guides on the pack and on the dropper at the mount. So if either get loose it will be easy to reinstall.
I love the Ortlieb mountless handlebar bag you reviewed a while back. I used it on a 600km bikepacking trip and it was excellent. Ortlieb are thinking outside the box for their designs.
I stow my tent poles in my Ortlieb seat bag and it really improves the "sag factor". I like the idea of a quick release seat bag. I ride bikepacking bags because they are more nimble than panniers for offroad riding. Paniers win hands down for access so I use them for road touring.
Looks like a great option for day rides where you might need to pick up the bike (no big frame bag please) or lock the bike (take the bag off easily please), perhaps in combination with a bar bag.
Love the concept but still want to see how much swaying it has while riding. I have fat thighs and hate any type of seat bag that rubs my thighs(destroyed more than one of shorts that way) this is why I like the tailfin setup.
My bike has cantilever brakes and this bag looks like an answer for me.
Seems like the rack is still better with the drop post. Sometimes the desire to save a little weight isn't worth it to me.
Didn't Trek have a version of this in the mid 90's? Not adjustable though, this is a definite improvement.
Arkel's dropper compatible seat bag is less complicated to adjust and is super stable.
A long time ago I purchased a small seat bag that had a quick release and while I really loved it, I quickly realized that it had one major drawback. I wanted to use it on multiple bikes, but doing that required removing the half of the locking mechanism from the saddle each time. What I'd have liked is to be able to buy extra "halves" of the connecting hardware so I would have the option to leave them on the various saddles and not have to worry about it. Maybe a small issue, but an issue nonetheless. If you really like the bag and want to transfer it around, it's potentially extra work.
Interesting, looks like an adjustable spinelock. I think I'd prefer a rack though, more uses.
Perfect! I was waiting for something like this. Have been using the saddle bag II from Ortlieb for some years now and didn’t understand why they wouldn’t use the same technology for their larger bags.
Even when my 4l bag is fully loaded I feel not much of a rattle.

Good concept, but too complex. They should have made that Wolftooth Valais part of the bag hardware, eliminated that Velcro strap, and at the same time made it much more supportive. A daisy chain and small ratchet strap or something would accommodate all seat positions. I use the Wolftooth Valais, Louise Dropper Post Harness and Sea to Summit dry bag, which all weighs 1/10 of that Orlieb, costs less and gives me almost full range of my dropper 🙂 Thanks!
I think the Revelate design with a fixed-in-place holster for the removable pack is much more convenient and sturdy. I’ve used mine nearly every day for at least 3 years and it’s held up fine. The holster shields the pack from much of the trail muck up n bad weather.
I like it other than the Velcro strap as it does offer some use of a dropper post.

For people who are into using saddle bags it's probably an innovation.
Although being from Ortlieb, almost definitely a very expensive one.
I ride my bike as a utilitarian with a variety of different sized single and double panniers, bags, baskets and others for carrying just about anything.

£155 it's ridiculously expensive when you can get the topeak equivalent size for £45 which has a higher weight limit, OK so no dropper fixing Inc in the price but it can be bought for an extra £10. That's a tough pill to swallow, I'm sure the quality is brilliant but man that's expensive, there are similar bags out there for half the price if you shop around and you don't fancy the topeak. Just my thoughts.

I’ve been holding off on buying a large seatpost-mounted bag due to having a small bike frame but this Ortlieb product looks promising. Will definitely look forward to your ride impressions video on it to decide.
seat bags being too fiddly and swaying side to side as I rode is why I switched to Arroe's system. This looks cool though and it would work with my Arroe set up too in case I wanted to carry everything and the kitchen sink.
Not sure about the new mount. I have the previous model. I had to modify mount to fit Brooks Swift. Perfect size for a day long ride. The plastic insert keeps bag fairly solid but you may want to wrap up bike tools which rattle around a lot.

Adapter does not fit on 28 mm dropper post.
Ortlieb is on the right track with idea of using a quick release, but the mechanism here looks kinda fiddly...
btw i am not using a dropper post...only a 30.9 mm thomson seatpost on the surly ghost grappler. any ideas?
I've used the old ortlieb seatbag for 20.000+ km, it sucks, just get a porcelain rocket (now rockgeist) Mr Fusion, that's the ultimate design, there is nothing better out there
Sadly, as with most seat packs, Mr Fusion needs more clearance than I have. This is the cool thing about Ortlieb's bags... I'm curious, what didn't you like about Ortlieb's?
Is it necessary to install that seat clamp first ?
I wonder why they made the seatpost clamp a separate part? The front of the bag only rests against it, rather than clamping onto it.
Alpkit's Exorail system is (I think) a steadier/firmer way of stabilising a seatpack - though it's not as easy to set up because it's sandwiched between the rails and the seatpost.
I think so it doubles as a dropper block. With the alpkit you can drop into the straps.

TBH the Alpkit Exorail is a HUGE pain to fit (and interestingly, it's the part they skip over in their instructional video!) If I didn't have the Alpkit Exorail already, I'd take a look at this Ortlieb system, but at £155 GBP, it's a bridge too far. ;-)
@@PathLessPedaledTV - That clamp will also prevent scratches & wear from dirt/straps on the dropper portion of the post as well. Can't be damaging that kashima coating on an expensive dropper post ;)

Seems a good 200g lighter than my Arkel SeatPacker (not a fair comparison, the Arkel is 15L) but I wonder if it's as stable. I'm also wondering if it would fit a (stupid non-standard) Giant D-Fuse seatpost.
I love the concept of a "quick" connect & release saddle bag attachment but this iteration of the concept falls short in my opinion. I have several similar bags and the older school quick clip buckles, honestly, are just as fast as this assembly. Conclusion: This bag, all be it well constructed is overly complex for such a minor "benefit", Especially if the bag can not be mounted when the bag is fully loaded. This is a deal breaker for me. I bought one and I have a hard time locking the seat bag to the rails of a brooks C17 saddle... does the ortlieb seat pack have a preference for saddle brands?
I want it to have a steeper angle but the locks are pretty hard to attach...
I think it would be a great investment for serious bike packers, it does need to be beaten to death though by a seasoned professional to prove the reliability of the concept.

@@shingweima Any of them work really. I have their MTB one on a gravel bike as well as their road. It really depends on matching your sit bone width and how much foam you want. I like wider ones because I ride more upright and they've all worked out great.

This is cool but I wouldnt say its dropper post compatible.. thats about as not compatible as it gets and consumers need to have proper expectations for a product to not get disappointed..
How is it not dropper post compatible? I literally put it on a dropper post and it works.

@Drifter Dogs well it sort of is compatible to any round tube. The dropper drops. Like I said multiple times in the video it limits your travel. I don't know how that is not setting proper expectations. I mean, any saddle bag that connects to the post (which is nearly all of them) is going to cut into your travel.

IDK if id reliy solely on that hardware. do they sell replacement parts if something breaks or a redundancy to keep it more secure long-term?

It has a volume of 13 l (793 cubic inches) and weighs 625 g (22 oz) so it sits between their two other seat packs with strap attachments. I think there is a review of those on this channel.
Ortlieb is very good in regards to supporting their products and they sell replacement parts.
I love how subversive the presence of your unrelated rear rack is for the entire rear end saddle mounted bikepacking / dropper trend. Like oh maybe that's the true solution for mountain oriented builds where space is limited and more constrained for multi-day rides. Can't help but think about the integrated Trek 1120 rack situation as we translate from plentiful touring loads to more conservative off road situations
On a side note I do appreciate the seat post clamp part which would come in Handy for a dropper post failure since you could prop up a failed seal. Had a dropper post freeze open last year and this could have solved it.

@@berzerkercat Being German let me tell you Ortlieb tried so hard to get into the bikepacking market but they failed miserably with their original seat bag they had to aftermarket a "stabilzer strap" for it. I have seen way too many riders out here with sad looking Ortlieb seat bags. Unfortunately they still have quiet a reputation from making panniers for decades so a lot of people buy their stuff without questioning. Ortlieb really annoys me with copying from various bikepacking brands trying to sell those designs as new inventions. That's why I don't see me spending any money with them again.
@@ickeausberlin36 I’m not a fan of the product reviewed here for various reasons but I’m myself using a 11L Ortlieb seat bag (it’s the updated version) and I really love it. Easy to use, very well build and though, I would definitively recommend the purchase for anyone looking for a good seat bag.
