  • Hi, everyone! This is Lara Hammock from the Marble Jar channel and in today's video I'll talk what I like about Mint.com -- my budgeting program of choice. This is Part 2 of a 3 part series on how I use Mint.
The first video in this series gives an overview of how I use Mint. In this video, I want to cover all of the things I like about Mint:
    * Consolidation - prior to using Mint, I had an elaborate process by which I would log into both my bank and my main credit card website and export transactions from each. Then I would put them all into a spreadsheet. This required me to be at my laptop and would take some doing. Plus there were inevitably duplicate transactions. It was, in short, a pain in the rear. Mint makes this process SO MUCH EASIER. Once you establish a connection inside Mint with your bank account and credit card accounts, it seamlessly pulls in all your transactions each time you visit the webpage or open the app. No elaborate export process, no duplicates. And because this is such as easy process, I can stay more on top of my spending and my budget.
    * Mobile - This is basically a given these days, but it is SO NICE to have a mobile version of Mint -- I have it on both my iPhone and iPad. The mobile app allows me to check my budgets and categorize transactions while I'm away from my computer. So, instead of this being a chore that I need to do in my office once a week or a couple of times a month, it becomes something I can update easily throughout the week before I forget what purchases I've made and what they were for. It also helps to be able to check my budgets on the fly when making purchase decisions.

Thank you for telling me about the "Split" option for transactions! I just started using Mint a few days ago and I thought this wasn't allowed :(

Really appreciate the careful critique. I'm working on developing an online budgeting tool that will address some or all of your practical budgeting concerns with Mint.

Great overview, but mint, at least on my computer, doesn't have the button to make a custom budget:/

Can you please tell me how to delete a credit card account from Mint? I only see hide but not delete.

Interesting resource but halfway through the setup the site tells me they cannot connect the Apple Card yet.

I got a lot out of your 3 videos and found them insightful. Thank you very much! I'd like to know how to handle a credit card payment. I haven't found andy one youtubing this process. Thanks again.

Hi, MP. I'm guessing you are talking about how to handle a credit card payment from your main bank account to pay off a balance on your credit card? If that is the case, I have both accounts in Mint. Each payment is 2 transactions, both called "Transfer to Credit Card": 1 from my bank account categorized as an expense and 1 from my credit card account as a deposit. Both are categorized as "Credit Card Payment,." They end up cancel each other out, which is helpful since I prefer to keep track of all of the transactions that make up the big payment, rather than just the monthly payment. I hope this makes sense!

thank you! I'm watching to see how to use mint. I'm paid twice a month - 15th and last day and I know the total for the month but if I exceed a category before I get to the next check I'm gonna be in trouble! like groceries I budget 100 a week and I can look and see what I've spent but will it give me a running total as I put the budget amounts in? like say 'you have used up your pay for this check'!

Hi, Susanna - for your needs, I would really recommend YNAB. It does just what you are looking for. I switched over about 2 years ago and have been very impressed with its features and flexibility. It is worth the cost because it provide very good feedback for those trying to get out of living paycheck to paycheck. I have some videos on YNAB as well if you are interested.
