Naysayers say what you will......this is one of the most under-appreciated Rap classics in all of history, and deserves a top spot and tons of respect.
Maestro had it all - image, style, beats, lyrics, and flow. It's a shame that he couldn't cross over into the US and make it huge, but back in those days you pretty much had to be from either NY or LA to make it big in rap. Regardless, this track is awesome, and totally makes me nostalgic.
it's cool that he sampled Haywire. i love when canadian rappers sample canadian music because they have so many old songs to choose from that no american rapper would have already used to death
I rocked this in my sony walkman back in the early 90's and you could not tell me anything in summer school (Detroit). thanks for the post, i really needed that one!
I met Marcy Flex on the bus to Maple ridge, I coudln't find his sound track until recently. He's a true rap artist. I was free styled by him it was an honour.
many people say that hip hop isn`t as good today .The reason is that everyone has run out of things to say.And if you listen to what wes is doing, he`s not sayin anything either ,but he does it with flare.THAT`S THE KEY.
@quickturtle Shit dude, this is from 89'. Toronto, canada has so much dope hip hop, you should keep checking for it. Other songs you should check out are "getto concept- EZ on the motion" CLASSIC toronto tune, "Dan E O Dear Hip Hop" , "Empire- Impossible" "Empire- Boom'n'pound", "Thrust- Rage", "Getto Concept- Much Love", just too many to mention. Its like when rap moved down south in the United States Hip Hop moved up North to Canada. Also check "Rez official- Lonly" Even the natives repin!
For a super great performance of Drop the Needle & Let your Backbone Slide, see the Fresh Wes live performance at the Juno 80's Nite (Jan 2011) on my RUclips account "lansd3".
