It’s very easy for people to just throw the word “masterpiece” around like it’s going out of fashion, but sometimes you will come across a piece of work that merits such high acclaim; _Robocop_ (1987) is arguably one such piece of work.
There is *zero* CG in this movie. Even Robo's vision was done analog style. This is a hand made film. Squibs, puppets, stop motion, suits, clever angles, great actors, and style. Theres maybe 5 movies in the 80s that use CGI and it's so primitive you notice it right away.
Ok gotcha. I did notice that it was more of a stop motion/puppet esc movement while watching the 2nd movie, I mentioned it looked like I was watching a episode of “Robot Chicken” but yeah my brain didn’t go to stop motion even though I could tell there was a bit of it at play.
@@ShyheimCinema Phil Tippett did the stop motion for the first 2 films.. designed and helped animate the first Jurassic Park dinosaurs (that was cgi but animated with stop motion puppets) various characters in the Star Wars films, and the bug aliens in Starship Troopers (another Paul Verhoeven film). hes a real master of the art.. and recently he released a full stop motion movie hed been working on for like 30 years called MAD GOD... which is like a heroin withdrawal fever dream come to life.
The villains in this film are so diabolical. When they finally perish , justice is served
I quickly figured out that RoboCop didn't arrest the first few criminals he dealt with, because they were out, and he could move on to the next crime while another cop cleaned up the mess. That made the best of RoboCop's use.
Nice to see that some of the youngsters have good taste in movies.
First saw this movie in 1997 I was 6 years old.
Still my favorite movie till this day!.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
Fun Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film. Allen was initially horrified to think that she had signed on to make a film with an incompetent director.
Movie Magic Fact: Most shots of Robocop and the police car show him getting out or preparing to get in. Peter Weller didn't fit into the police car in full costume. When he needed to be in the car, he wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. To maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting first.
What Script Fact: For the attempted rape scene, writer Edward Neumeier originally had RoboCop (Peter Weller) shoot past the victim's cheek, hitting and killing the rapist. While getting ready to shoot the scene as scripted, Paul Verhoeven noticed that Donna Keegan's legs were spread apart, giving him the idea to have RoboCop shoot between her legs and hit the rapist in the genitals. Neumeier loved the idea and that was how the scene was shot.
I love reading fun facts about the production and bts work of these films from you guys 😊 I really liked *that* he shot between her dress, it gave it some creativity.
You're welcome. 😁
Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍
Robert Doquis is severely underrated, he was perfect as a weary police chief
His footsteps are iconic
The reason it was set in Detroit is because at that time Detroit was making all the news as the most violent city in America with high murder and crime rates. Robocop is a logical extension of that, and social commentary.
Robocop is a masterpiece of cinema (It’s also a film that could’ve only been made in the 1980’s) extremely smart with a lot of deep social commentary and sight gags! You are lucky to experience the film uncut (That version is the Rated X Cut) The film was edited a lot due to the MPAA demanding cuts for a theatrical releases! the Criterion Laserdisc was the first home video version released uncut (The 1st DVD was actually the original theatrical cut then Criterion released the uncut dvd (I think Criterion held the rights until the license expired) Now the rated X version is available everywhere) The entire original Robocop Trilogy is very strong (Robocop 3 isn’t as bad as the internet mob claim it to be it’s not as good as the first two but, there’s a lot more good then bad imo 👍👍👍
Robocop 3 to me is the second best one. I loved it.
@@ShyheimCinemarobocop 3 awful and awful remake 🎉
The first spike is not a weapon. It is a computer interface connector... Like a long pointy USB.
Literally anything can be a weapon even a usb if you use it right.
"bitches, leave!"
I was like dang 😂😂
I saw this movie in the cinema, everyone laughed when he said that!
Oh my god, you made a brilliant observation. I've seen this movie a thousand times, and I never noticed it until you pointed it out...
In "Eight Mile," a movie also set in Detroit, B Rabbit said of Papa Doc, "He ain't gangsta, his real name is Clarence!" But that point is invalid, because the most gangsta person in the history of movies set in Detroit was named "Clarence." Clarence Boddiker, Kurtwood Smith's character in Robocop. So, upon further review, B Rabbit gets no points for that bar.
Dang 😂😂
The armour goes over the top so when they get shot they dont need to get a new shirt.
13:00 the idea was Robo would stop a crook, report it. The cops would come and make the arrest.
Yeah I get it, just having a bit of fun.
@@ShyheimCinema I’m glad you’re having fun. What’s the point otherwise, right?
How have you not seen it 🤯🤯🤯
I envy you watching this classic for the first time. I still watch the Blu Ray now. Not a bad first Hollywood film for Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who went on to direct future classics like "Total Recall"(1990), "Basic Instinct"(1992) and "Starship Troopers"(1997). Or, you can check out his "masterpiece": "Showgirls"(1996).😎
ED209 movement was not CGI, it was stop motion animation.
The guy robbing a liquor store can't be arrested if he's dead...
…Umm Exactly my point 😂
Best movie ever made 🎉
These 80s films were violent asfuk, I was so desensitized to extreme violence by the time I was 10
I Never Seen This But I Heard It Has Gruesome Because Of R-Rated That's How I Never Known This Film Has Gruesome In It
All the shots with ED-209 were Stop-motion. Paul Verhoeven wanted to use CGI, but it was too expensive for the budget. The same goes for the shot where Robocop uses thermograph imagery. Hiring the thermograph equipment for the shot was also too expensive, so Paul Verhoeven had all the actors in bodysuits and were painted up and shot in a darkened room to make it look like thermograph was being used.
Thanks for the reaction! Great job! I looked at it with pleasure. I hope that you will also make reactions to the second and third parts of Robocop 😉🤖
Always cool to see someone watch RoboCop for the first time. Fun Fact: I own one of the two Robo pistols they used in this movie plus a few other screen used props.
His 93r?!?
@@sgtsnokeem1139 Yep. Screen matched to 4 scenes.
@@rowbownerd fkn sweet
@@sgtsnokeem1139 It’s one heavy a$$ pistola! Lol
Nice
ED-209 Traumatizing a whole new generation, one reaction RUclipsr at a time
My dude. Any RoboCop reaction that pops up gets an auto sub from me.
By the way non of it was filmed in Detroit
Great reaction and I also like your music! Fun Fact: this movie was supposed to get an X rating because of the violence. They had to tone it down to make it an R for theaters. A classic! Back then, stop motion and cgi(eg the ed 209 and ghostbusters gargoyles) looked weird to us too, we couldn't wait for tech to advance and we were literally in these times, but we enjoyed it.
Thank you so much!! 🧡 Also Ghostbusters was great too, definitely check that one out on the channel.
@@ShyheimCinema You’re welcome! Cool will do!
I still laugh every time I hear it - I can’t believe it, you burned the f.. g money! Lmao.. Also if you look closely he doesn’t run, however he does speed walks, that much he was given and is canon in the lore. Btw a small studio called Teyon just released a Robo game, not perfect but they do pay homage and respect the franchise.
Yes, I did see the Robocop Rogue City trailer before it’s release just haven’t had time to buy the game yet but I will be playing it 😄.
Was there a movie called Tarzan The Fearless?
You should react to "Robocop," 2014, to compare and see a different perspective. It's not as good a movie as the original, but it's worth watching.
Yes you are right it’s not as good as the original, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I did record that video last month but life has just been moving so fast I haven’t gotten a chance to finish editing it.
Awesome
JAHIME, too bad you weren't around in the 80s. EVEN weekend, a great movie was coming out. APPLE computers, and the cassette Walkman and come out. The reviewer should keep in mind this movie essentially is a critique of Reganomics. In my movie Theater, we didn't laugh st the Nukem ad, we all flipped out over a fam 17:04 ily playing with nukes.
You should check out other movies from Paul Verhoven, the director. Total Recall and Starship Troopers are both kind of sci-fi dark comedies and pretty great. But if you're only doing 80s you should watch Evil Dead if you haven't seen it. Those are always fun.
Ok cool I will consider those, also I’m not only doing 80s movies I have a bunch of different movies here on the channel to enjoy I just really love 80s movies and there’s a bunch I haven’t seen but I think I just won’t ever touch anything before the 80s on the channel. I’m keen to do anything 80s and after that era.
Also stay tuned for the Evil Dead news. I’ll just say it’s been on my mind for a month or so to dive into those here. 😁
I always wonder how that must be for Americans, they say it's Detroit but it's filmded in Dallas. European cities are a little smaller but isn't that annoying?
No not really, some locations just work better for a certain vision and it’s just how studios have been doing things for years. But at the end of the day it’s all fictional even if it’s set in a real world place.
Armour with that much padding is going to notice under clothing, also they will probably get you in the head if shooting at the torso doesnt work, ROBOCOP was SO predictive, it's usually worn in riot situations, but police DO wear very similar kevlar armour to this, now in the real world.
ROBOCOP ISNT a policeman, he a peace keeping Soldier, like James Bond HE is licenced to kill, later in the film the only reason he can't kill Bodikker, (under those circumstances) is because the programming won't allow it, this is WHY he arrests him instead
He doesnt have to run, because his aim with the programmed gun is precise, he never misses, again the gun does most of the crime prevention as is true in the real world in your Country.
More proof of how underhanded Jones is, we can assume that he knew about "the Robocop programme" & quietly had the 4th directive inserted into it, unknown to Bob Morton, who was an inexperienced Wizz kid, .
ROBOCOP remains to this day the best critique of 80s culture both Corporate & Political, other social commenting films of the time- TRADING PLACES, WALL ST only came at the problem from the one angle-Commodities aka the stock market, ROBOCOP is much more to do with Society at larger ESPECIALLY in "The big City."
CGI didn't exist yet.
Better do the other 2 sci-fi Verhoeven
And what would those be?
Robocop 2014 is as bad as Female Ghostbusters reboot.
Also, you kept calling stop motion as CGI! What's wrong with you?
Just because they don't show a shot of the felons at the car "not arrested",but you get the idea... come on, dude. Just stick to superhero movies next time. Even the very obvious satire just flew right by your head.
It’s not that serious to be in the comments about 😂 let me have some fun, just watch the whole video 👍
@@ShyheimCinema Nothing gets over his head. His reflexes are too quick, he would catch it.
There is no CGI in this movie only Stopmotion and practical effects. 1987 not realy the time of large computers . your phone has 10.000. time more prossing speed and memory than those computers .
Yes it was a simple mistake of what I said in the moment
@@ShyheimCinema Did you notice the DVD used when brodiger shot he exectutive in the knees? that was 10 years before DVDs where invented .
Robocop is one of a trilogy of paul verhoeven who created robocop 1987 , total recall and starship troopers. . All quite graphic and gory
the movie was filmed in DALLAS TEXAS - so shitting on detroit is kinda silly
Silly in a good way or bad way? Cause I’ve been to Detroit and it’s not nice there. Also it’s made to look shitty for the movie so 💁♀️ yeah my point still stands.
Dude, Detroit was a punch line even in the 70s... Kentucky Fried Movie had it as a recurring joke and that was like 75.
Dallas had some very modern and unique architecture. Very good choice for a future setting. But to wear 50lbs of fiberglass and rubber in triple digit heat should be a form of execution or at least torture.
It was also partially filmed in Pittsburgh.. ie. Bodickers crew hideout.
cg didnt exist in 1987.
You're as scary as ED!
