    Security issues with wireguard!? Please elaborate. Sure, wireguard may have some privacy issues, since it logs connected ip addresses by default. Also wireguard doesn't assign clients dynamic ip addresses, so each client/user is associated with/to the ip address(es) they've been assigned.
    A VPN provider could use something like double NAT'ing to add a layer of privacy/anonymity to wireguard connections to account for this. However, security is an entirely different topic. I highly doubt that wireguard has any major security flaws, it wouldn't have been added to the Linux kernel otherwise. Wireguard is very "opinionated" when it comes to security protocols and encryption methods, it doesn't allow you to pick and choose which ones you want to use, it actually enforces/mandates which security protocols and encryption methods are used. That's the way it should be IMO.

    • @TheJabberTech
      @TheJabberTech  4 года назад

      Since my review from more than 1 year ago 🤦‍♂️ wireguard has been greatly improved and more secure..go read up on the early days of this protocol from it's infancy until now.

    I feel like this is a dumb question, but I’ll ask it anyway: does this particular device need to be plugged in / connected to an existing WiFi “portal” in order to work? For example, if I’m in China and using it to be able to access Google / Snapchat (with the included VPN component), do I need to still have some sort of WiFi connection? Or, if I’m on the train in the middle of nowhere, can it provide me with some kind of internet connection?

    Interesting video. Thanking you for sharing your knowledge. I have a few questions and I hope you can point me in the right direction. I would like to travel more and work remotely but some of the jobs require you to have an IP Address in the US (work laptop will have a VPN Client installed) and if leave the country I will not be able to connect since hotels, airbnbs, etc will offer free Wi-Fi but they will not allow me to make modifications to their routers. Another option is to buy a local internet plan for a cellphone and share the connection with my laptop but again the ip address will be an issue. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

      A late reply, but hope it helps some. You can set up the router to connect to your favourite commercial VPN provider. If it allows you to select the US, and they mask your point of origin (I.e. not set up as a transparent VPN that leaks your IP), then yes.
      If you have a good home connection with decent upload and download speeds, you can set up your own VPN server at home using WireGuard and connect your travel router to it.
      I have the 750s on the go, and the AXT1800 at home set up with WireGuard server. When connected to the 750 with the VPN connected to home (full tunnel, not split tunnel), it looks like I’m at home. That’s the IP that shows up when browsing.

    • @KT-kt6qq

      If you don't want to bog down the wifi speed as you may end up sharing either the 5ghz or 2.4ghz line for wifi repeater. You might want to get an additional wifi router. Just use one of the lan ports and connect it to the wan of a separate wifi router. That way the little box is dedicated to just repeating function and won't bottle neck itself in many processing. From the wifi router, you can connect your switch and all your wifi needs to any devices. It will also add another layer of firewall to your network.
      If you dont want to spend the extra money on a wifi router, the little box can still get the job done. Just saying.

    I've been using the gl-mt300a for couple years now for traveling, but found it is hit or miss with hotel wifi. 1/3 of the time it just doesn't work at all. Hotel wifi that uses capture portal or some weird authenication/login procedures tends to choke it up. Requires force reboot to get functioning or sometime even hard reset. Software seems buggy.
    Is this newer model better in terms of reliability?

    • @TheJabberTech
      @TheJabberTech  5 лет назад +2

      This slate router is much improved for sure, polished up ui and faster than the other that I had. I haven't had an issue with hotl wifi with a portal. I don't know if you have the same feature on your model but you can always login using your phone, laptop or whatever and then clone that Mac address into the router. That's one workaround

    • @Battlem0nk
      @Battlem0nk 5 лет назад

      I'm using the beta firmware for GL-MT300A and UI looks the same as the slate. Tried many firmware in the past 3 years. They've gotten better, but still buggy. Spend more time than I should troubleshooting before giving up in the hotel.
      Sometimes MAC cloning would work, but not always. Other times it plainly chokes trying to connect or become responsive requiring reboot. Few times it needed a hard reset.
      The MT300A uses MTK SOC, maybe the AR750S-ext (slate) Qualcomm SOC is more reliable? At least it seems more supported and getting software updates.

    This thing has (2) radios: one @2.4 GHz; one @5.8GHz
    Many connect 1 radio to a WWAN & the other to their WLAN computers. It's a wireless bridge. It's full duplex. Your computer can transmit to the Gli.Net and it can concurrently transmit to the WWAN. Speeds stuff up. But what if your computer is wired ... more throughput??
    Using the Gli.Net as a wireless access point (and not a repeater) *should* allow both of its 2 radios to connect to 2 WWANs in parallel. Can it bond those connections and give your wired computer greater bandwidth? I'm sure it can, but not obvious how to do it.
    Anybody know how? I'm interested in part because I want speed, but also because I end up manually disconnect/reconnecting between the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz connections sans any Gli.net and I'm hoping to avoid that ever again by letting it be the wireless access point to my wired network

    • @edwarddench5342
      @edwarddench5342 4 года назад

      Answer is a little more complex. Theispackage will do the trick for me. Just need to figure out how to get deeper into the Gli box ..
      openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/multiwan/mwan3
      MWAN3 is a load balancer and won't stack the WWANs, but will distribute different requests. That's good for my needs which is part redundancy, part speed, but no "stacked" bandwidth requirement. It's NOT good for RT Video, or a big download. This is not "channel bonding", which I think would stack wireless channels to the wireless router (single WAN), but requires isolation from neighbors / busy circuits. This is not "SD-WAN", which uses an expensive remote "aggregator" to split up packets to the multiple bonded connections (good for RT video, large downloads)

    • @KT-kt6qq
      @KT-kt6qq 4 года назад

      I believe you had answer your own question. Yes, it can be connect as wwan and I believe up to 4 connections if I recall, meaning you can setup up to 4 different wifi repeater connection. Does it connect simultaneously, i dont know, haven't tried that method yet. As for connecting using the wwan and the you connecting through the lan. Yes. It works like a router.
      Or if you thinking connecting wwan and wan at same time.. maybe not, since you need to select a mode of connection and not sure if the boc let you choose both options to operate at the same time. Its a idea.
      Heck, why even stop there, have 3 connections, wwan, wan and throw in the usb connection(through your sim provided jetpack). If they all connect, you might have triple the connection speed or just a frankstein thought. But then again, isn't that what this high speed connections are doing lately, 2 wan connections to double the speed in ax mode.

      It does pretty close like a main home router. The speed is as good as what your internet provider can provide. Only thing is, I don't think this router can do 100mbps since this router was made before that new tech was in place. However, if that is what you want, this isn't even at that price point to begin with. For those kind of tech, you paying 3+ times the cost of this router to get that kind of speed. Again, like original poster said, this is a travel router and a good one for that purpose. You won't be carrying your home router when you travel, would you?
