Is it possible to connect the GL router to the main internet source (the modem), set vpn and connect via lan cable a device to the router to have connection? Or the connection is possible only via wifi?
I feel like this is a dumb question, but I’ll ask it anyway: does this particular device need to be plugged in / connected to an existing WiFi “portal” in order to work? For example, if I’m in China and using it to be able to access Google / Snapchat (with the included VPN component), do I need to still have some sort of WiFi connection? Or, if I’m on the train in the middle of nowhere, can it provide me with some kind of internet connection?
Due to the new limitations of Netflix, I was thinking of setting up a VPN server so that all users would have the same IP using WireGuard. Would it be possible with this router? Thanks in advance.

Interesting video. Thanking you for sharing your knowledge. I have a few questions and I hope you can point me in the right direction. I would like to travel more and work remotely but some of the jobs require you to have an IP Address in the US (work laptop will have a VPN Client installed) and if leave the country I will not be able to connect since hotels, airbnbs, etc will offer free Wi-Fi but they will not allow me to make modifications to their routers. Another option is to buy a local internet plan for a cellphone and share the connection with my laptop but again the ip address will be an issue. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.
Was this answered. Need to know if I can get access to IP address in the US by plugging in VPN configuration via the admin setting and it projects WiFi connection with USA IP address when abroad.
A late reply, but hope it helps some. You can set up the router to connect to your favourite commercial VPN provider. If it allows you to select the US, and they mask your point of origin (I.e. not set up as a transparent VPN that leaks your IP), then yes. If you have a good home connection with decent upload and download speeds, you can set up your own VPN server at home using WireGuard and connect your travel router to it. I have the 750s on the go, and the AXT1800 at home set up with WireGuard server. When connected to the 750 with the VPN connected to home (full tunnel, not split tunnel), it looks like I’m at home. That’s the IP that shows up when browsing.

Thank you for the review! We are moving into a basement where the landlord is providing wifi - can I use this little guy as a firewall/client router to take the landlord's wifi, but also broadcast my own wifi? I also want to connect to a gigabit switch because I have a few ethernet-connected devices I'd like to use (Nas, printer, desktop). Thanks!
This little guy can do all that you noted. However, it only has 2 gigabit port, which you can connect your gigabit switch to for more connections. Looks like this sets you up and also creates your own network(intranet with internet access)
If you don't want to bog down the wifi speed as you may end up sharing either the 5ghz or 2.4ghz line for wifi repeater. You might want to get an additional wifi router. Just use one of the lan ports and connect it to the wan of a separate wifi router. That way the little box is dedicated to just repeating function and won't bottle neck itself in many processing. From the wifi router, you can connect your switch and all your wifi needs to any devices. It will also add another layer of firewall to your network. If you dont want to spend the extra money on a wifi router, the little box can still get the job done. Just saying.
You say the micro USB is used to charge the device. Are you saying it has a built in battery? My understand was that is simply a power port and that there was not an internal battery - but I haven't looked into it specifically.
So I liked everything except the music during the speed tests, please stop with that, the pauses aren't that long, just let it be silent for a few seconds.
In most hotel when i connect to the hotspot, i come up with the portal, for entering you name en room number. Is it possible to login with this router into the hotspot and enter these information, so that all devices that is connected to this router, can get instantly internet access?

Does it have its own built in WiFi or does it have to run off other WiFi? And do you need to use the LAN port and WAN port or can you just plug it into a power bank?
hi I'm connected in my home to the same wifi as others and I'm concerned about my privacy. will using this prevent them from accessing my media, files, etc?
I've been using the gl-mt300a for couple years now for traveling, but found it is hit or miss with hotel wifi. 1/3 of the time it just doesn't work at all. Hotel wifi that uses capture portal or some weird authenication/login procedures tends to choke it up. Requires force reboot to get functioning or sometime even hard reset. Software seems buggy. Is this newer model better in terms of reliability?
This slate router is much improved for sure, polished up ui and faster than the other that I had. I haven't had an issue with hotl wifi with a portal. I don't know if you have the same feature on your model but you can always login using your phone, laptop or whatever and then clone that Mac address into the router. That's one workaround
I'm using the beta firmware for GL-MT300A and UI looks the same as the slate. Tried many firmware in the past 3 years. They've gotten better, but still buggy. Spend more time than I should troubleshooting before giving up in the hotel. Sometimes MAC cloning would work, but not always. Other times it plainly chokes trying to connect or become responsive requiring reboot. Few times it needed a hard reset. The MT300A uses MTK SOC, maybe the AR750S-ext (slate) Qualcomm SOC is more reliable? At least it seems more supported and getting software updates.

Is this product good for this scenario: my router is downstairs and I want to move the pc upstairs. The pc doesn't have a wifi adapter, it's currently connected via ethernet cable. Will I be able to use this portable router to connect to the wifi, i.e the downstairs router? Thx

This thing has (2) radios: one @2.4 GHz; one @5.8GHz Many connect 1 radio to a WWAN & the other to their WLAN computers. It's a wireless bridge. It's full duplex. Your computer can transmit to the Gli.Net and it can concurrently transmit to the WWAN. Speeds stuff up. But what if your computer is wired ... more throughput?? Using the Gli.Net as a wireless access point (and not a repeater) *should* allow both of its 2 radios to connect to 2 WWANs in parallel. Can it bond those connections and give your wired computer greater bandwidth? I'm sure it can, but not obvious how to do it. Anybody know how? I'm interested in part because I want speed, but also because I end up manually disconnect/reconnecting between the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz connections sans any Gli.net and I'm hoping to avoid that ever again by letting it be the wireless access point to my wired network
Answer is a little more complex. Theispackage will do the trick for me. Just need to figure out how to get deeper into the Gli box .. openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/multiwan/mwan3 MWAN3 is a load balancer and won't stack the WWANs, but will distribute different requests. That's good for my needs which is part redundancy, part speed, but no "stacked" bandwidth requirement. It's NOT good for RT Video, or a big download. This is not "channel bonding", which I think would stack wireless channels to the wireless router (single WAN), but requires isolation from neighbors / busy circuits. This is not "SD-WAN", which uses an expensive remote "aggregator" to split up packets to the multiple bonded connections (good for RT video, large downloads)
I believe you had answer your own question. Yes, it can be connect as wwan and I believe up to 4 connections if I recall, meaning you can setup up to 4 different wifi repeater connection. Does it connect simultaneously, i dont know, haven't tried that method yet. As for connecting using the wwan and the you connecting through the lan. Yes. It works like a router. Or if you thinking connecting wwan and wan at same time.. maybe not, since you need to select a mode of connection and not sure if the boc let you choose both options to operate at the same time. Its a idea. Heck, why even stop there, have 3 connections, wwan, wan and throw in the usb connection(through your sim provided jetpack). If they all connect, you might have triple the connection speed or just a frankstein thought. But then again, isn't that what this high speed connections are doing lately, 2 wan connections to double the speed in ax mode.
Hi quick question, to use a vpn client does it have to be in a specific mode ie, in repeater or cable mode or does it not matter. Wiil the vpn work in either mode. Many thanks

However, when I am in hotels and want to use my laptop I am often frustrated by the slowness of the internet due to the distance of my room from the wireless access point. What type of device would I need to improve the strength of the signal?
The slate router has a fast processor and has support for wireguard (not sure if the non S model has that). I'd stick with the slate edition, faster processor for these mini routers, IF using with a VPN service will speed things up a lot

From the wifi router, you can connect your switch and all your wifi needs to any devices. It will also add another layer of firewall to your network.
If you dont want to spend the extra money on a wifi router, the little box can still get the job done. Just saying.
@@KT-kt6qq can you help me? I need some advice.
@@dousenetworkllc state your question here and we all see what we can offer.
You say the micro USB is used to charge the device. Are you saying it has a built in battery? My understand was that is simply a power port and that there was not an internal battery - but I haven't looked into it specifically.
I tried connecting on Playstation 4 but it ask for Proxy server? Any idea how to connect this on a PS4?
So I liked everything except the music during the speed tests, please stop with that, the pauses aren't that long, just let it be silent for a few seconds.
In most hotel when i connect to the hotspot, i come up with the portal, for entering you name en room number.
Is it possible to login with this router into the hotspot and enter these information, so that all devices that is connected to this router, can get instantly internet access?
Yes,that's one major plus to this device
@@TheJabberTech Oh ok, thank you for the information.
But how can i enter these information (name and roomnumber etc) for the hotspot in my router?
You sign from one device and clone the Mac into the slate router

If so, doesn't this WISP mode, (after sign in the first device) do all the procedure automatically?
I use Macs, Ipads, Iphone and an Android phone.
I am mostly interested in using this with my Ipad and my Mac Book Pro when I go to conventions.
Will it work with these ?
I find it very annoying that even convention facilities have NO free wi fi for the attendees to use.
This is not OS specific. Works with any wifi device
Can I use this to disguise my location?
Yes

How do I set up tether for my phone using this device?
Good detailed review, thanks

Does it have its own built in WiFi or does it have to run off other WiFi? And do you need to use the LAN port and WAN port or can you just plug it into a power bank?

I think Qualcomm was the way to go. More support and widely used .
hi
This thing has all kinds of bad reviews on Amazon, I may have to rethink this...
Works great for me still. People don't know this is just a travel router and try to use it as their main home router... Mistake #1
@@TheJabberTech Ahh okay I see what you mean now, I'll give it a shot. I moved to a campground that uses a Hotel Internet type of Router for their internet and we have to sign in every 3 hours. I'm really hoping this will help me bypass that Splash page. It seems this campground uses Spectrum as their ISP. Plus my wireless signal on my PS4 is really weak and I'm hoping it will fix that problem where i can play my ps4 online...

Is it good to use with the surface dock 2. I'm really new to all this.
What's the point of this thing if u hv2 connect it to pre existing wifi networks?? 🤔 I thought a router PROVIDED the wifi... Like, if there isn't any where u are, your portable ROUTER SHOULD PROVIDE ONE.
It is a router, not a modem. Router "routes" to the modem which provides the access to the internet.
*_Hoping you can help me. I got the router all set up and working fine. Where I live the internet speed is very slow. So I wanted to limit the speed of the grandkids devices. How do you do the 3g/4g modem or tethering ways of getting Internet? Do you literally just plug it in?!
That's what they say. Don't use a USB modem

Zero

Unlikely but if they are just clone a mac from a device that registers

This thing has (2) radios: one @2.4 GHz; one @5.8GHz
Many connect 1 radio to a WWAN & the other to their WLAN computers.
Just need to figure out how to get deeper into the Gli box ..
openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/multiwan/mwan3
MWAN3 is a load balancer and won't stack the WWANs, but will distribute different requests.
Many thanks
Works in every mode
@@TheJabberTech brilliant thanks mate
Hi Jabber Tech, my knowledge of this stuff is near to zero. However, when I am in hotels and want to use my laptop I am often frustrated by the slowness of the internet due to the distance of my room from the wireless access point. What type of device would I need to improve the strength of the signal?
this "could" help you if you placed it closed to the door in your hotel room. Most access points are located in the hallways
well, if you bought some better antenna to connect on the 2 ends of this, it might get a better signal.
Thanks for the review! Would you recommend this over the older non S version? Main difference to me is the lack of gigabit port.
The slate router has a fast processor and has support for wireguard (not sure if the non S model has that). I'd stick with the slate edition, faster processor for these mini routers, IF using with a VPN service will speed things up a lot
I will be renting a place without internet. Can I use this with a hotspot to use my 2 magicjack phones
If those devices use wifi or ethernet, should be good to go
Just get a free Google voice and a Google voice device its way better.

@@RetiredPilot you can port both numbers just get one that has 2 phone Jack's you can put both phone numbers on one device
The question, if you have a internet connection by wifi or by ethernet or by simcard through jetpack by usb. All 3 of those methods you can connect with this device and setup a hotspot or the 2 ethernet lan ports for your 2 magicjack phones to connect to.

@@TheJabberTech I want something that I can use wireguard on that I can just hide away somewhere, something with a small footprint, everything by Asus or Netgear for the home is massive, and as I already subscribe to mullvad, it already has the config files built in for mullvad wireguard, it would be perfect for my needs.
I'll simply hook it up to my virgin media router in modem mode by cable, my PC will connect by LAN cable too, then everything else like phone, laptop, Amazon fire etc will connect by WiFi, the router itself would be static.

It does pretty close like a main home router. The speed is as good as what your internet provider can provide. Only thing is, I don't think this router can do 100mbps since this router was made before that new tech was in place. However, if that is what you want, this isn't even at that price point to begin with. For those kind of tech, you paying 3+ times the cost of this router to get that kind of speed. Again, like original poster said, this is a travel router and a good one for that purpose. You won't be carrying your home router when you travel, would you?
