- The GL.iNet GL-MT300N-V2 Mini Travel Router packs one serious punch for its price! I've been away twice over the past two weeks and have taken this router with me, setting up a private network in my Hotel Room.
There's nothing like coming back to your hotel room after a long day exploring, and kicking back with Netflix or Disney+ streamed to your own Chromecast over a Personal Private Network.

That's because the product sucks!
@@camshand Trying to connect to my apartment complex free Wi-Fi. It is also 2.4 GHz. Doing this on my iPad Air… I must be missing something?
Did you know that if you change your custom dns settings to adguard dns on your router, you get an additional feature not offered by google dns and cisco open dns which is ad blocking.
Yes that's also a great tip. I didn't want to get too much into what you can and can't do to keep it simple. with openDNS you can create and account and actually blacklist sites and add filters at dns level for your network (easy parental controls), but not as easy as a ad blocker focused one.
Given the Mini router is running OpenWrt you can probably install an ad blocker plugin as well, however you wouldn't get the added speed Benifits of having ads blocked at the dns stage/level.
I just know openDNS is good for Aussies as it routes preferably to Australian servers if one exists.
If you set the dns, there are still alot of hotel and public wifi's that use dns redirect for the captive portal.
If you find that you cannot reach the captive portal authenticate, you may have to set it back to auto.
Unless you know that ip and when your device Mac address (travel router) expires on that network you can usually type the IP of the gateway in manually to reach the portal.
If I were to insist on using a specific dns such as Google, I might bookmark the captive portal url ,auto dns ip, or gateway ip(usually the gateway will get you to the captive portal..not always) before setting static dns. I guess this depends on your personal level of nerd dedication to the situation.
A little tedious but......
Great point, the captive portal guide I linked in the description does show users to toggle it over to allow hijacking of DNS server, they're fiddly but I guess they don't want us using our own routers when in the Hotel haha.
Thanks for the comment, hopefully someone sees it and can save themselves from a stressful situation.
@@camshand do i have to put a surfstick with sim card into the mini travel router?
with my wifi, I got 130 mbps. When I use the wifi network, it become 30 mbps and when I use VPN I got 6mbps. lol
I have to try with a cable, result should be better!
Nice video man!
Hmm try updating firmware and running VPN through wireguard. Might hopefully help 👍
This video is great, I was pulling my hair out on how to get my flatmates from accessing my chromecast all the time since we share the same wifi. Thank you!
That's a great use for it! If you're planning to use it every day 24/7 with a fair few devices then maybe the top tier model would be worth the look into, either way, you'll end up with your own network piggybacking off of the existing one 😁
It's on of these videos one would give thumbs up without hesitating. Amazing content, just what I was looking for, thanks! :)
Thanks man 😁👍 good to hear you found the info you're after ☺️
Agreed!
lol the "LAN down under"
I know this is an oldies vídeo but i like it thanks for a great tutorial you earned yourself a subscriber today mate 😅
Thank you Esmar, happy to have you as a subscriber mate 👍
Thank you for the vid! Just ordered this product. Helped me out a bunch!
Enjoy it! They're super handy to have
While this might stop people from connecting to your ChromeCast, it wouldn't work with a lot of Smart TVs. They use Wifi-Direct, meaning they don't even have to be connected to yours (or anyones) network to cast to them, your phone just directly connects to the TV and casts. If a neighbor has a smart TV you can probably see it on your cast list and cast directly to it. It's stupidly insecure.
I find this video a massive over-simplification of how this product behaves. Tried two of these, and must say that while the wifi it generates is good, and the admin UI is user friendly, the box connection to home wifi and even cable connection is very fragile to say the least, with many time outs for wifi connection, or not even recognizing that a network cable was connected to it...
Thanks for this very good presentation plus the tutorial in a less than 10 mn video ! Great job and straight to the point.
Cheers mate, great vid, just ordered one
Enjoy dude, hopefully it'll get some use with travelling in the near future ☺️✌️
Thanks man! Got it all setup, great tutorial
super simple and helpful; thanks bro
Nice work Cam. Great video and tips, as always!
Thanks Tom!
Keep up the good work, great video
Am I to understand that the smart router is useless without the VPN software?
you don't need a vpn to check your bank, they use SSL/TLS which encrypts all data.
Thank you bro needed this!
No Problem! if you've got a moment checkout my latest tech review vid ruclips.net/video/7ZkmYeEx9Ko/видео.html
Great video man!! Only question to didn't show how to connect a USB tethering via phone service which is what I'm instrested in doing! Is that possible to do with this device! Also are you saying this device can serve as a Chromecast as well? Thank again
Hey sorry for the late response, yes you can tether from a mobile phone to this device, and then out to any other connected devices. Also it isn't a chromecast itself as has no HDMI out, what I did in the video was connect a chromecast to the MANGO v2 and then my phone to the MANGO v2, and the signal passed through it to the TV. This is because a hotel Wi-Fi wouldn't be the best access point to set a chromecast open on.
Amazing video, very easy to follow. Im ordering one now.
Thanks Z B 😁 Judging by your profile picture I'm sure you'll have no problems at all getting up and running! They're such a cool little device to have, and you'll be very surprised with just how light they are to hold 👍
Its a good thing Starbucks allows me to connect to their wifi
These can be handy for any shared wifi network ✌️
Damn that’s a small router!! It’s scary how tech is getting smaller and handier!!
Yeap it's super impressive! I'll have a follow up vid with some more uses and it may or may not feature that top of the line model 😉

I ordered the Slate AX, hope its way better
Yeah mango is getting bit old now with it's processing power. That new Slate looks great, I have an original slate and newer beryl, such exciting devices to use

great instructions, but once I set up router via Wi-Fi and travel to a hotel without LAN connection will router pick up hotel Wi-Fi?
thanks for the video, what's a realistic range of the repeater?
Have you tried adding two external antennas to it? Very easy to do I added them on 4 of them I had and sold them on e-bay.

You mentioned that Disney and Netflix blocked the connection, can I confirm if they blocked your account with them or if you could still access them with the VPN function turned off? Thanks, great video!
Your account will be fine. All that happens is that Netflix/Disney+ will show a screen telling you to turn off your vpn

Awesome Videos Cam, What's the name of the theme your using on your google chrome browser?
Thanks Ivan 😁! and oh dude I don't know! haha seems the Chrome Extension store won't tell me what's currently active. It's been bound to my Google Account for years, tbh forgot I even had a theme active 😂 sorry that's not much help, but I searched white minimal but couldn't see something on the list.
I'm old and tech challenged. Is this a good option if I live near a public library and I don't want to pay for internet at home? Are there better products?
Can you add a LAN expansion cable so you can have more LAN ports?
Question???
I'm actually in Florida planning on traveling to Dominican Republic. What info from my network do I need to connect my portable router 2 an order to get my Florida IP address to look like I'm still in Florida ?
Just need to find a VPN provider with a server in Florida. Then set that on the router as the VPN option ☺️
Hello, did you figure without? Trying to do exactly the same…please help. Thank you
Would I be correct in thinking that unless you use a VPN, this is NOT secure in a hotel because, even though your personal SSID on this device is password protected and encrypted, communication between this device and the access point at the hotel is not encrypted and therefore could be seen?
That's correct. Without a VPN, it just acts as a WIFI repeater.
Just awesome info. 👍
amazing video thanks!
Great video. Have you checked for malware built in to the device for siphoning off your sensitive data and sending it to somewhere you hadn't bargained for ?
Hi Simon, it runs OpenWRT, so if you're concerned I'm sure you can flash your own copy direct from the net 😊
@@camshand Thanks Cam. Yes - that should be safer since they have obviously modified the original version for this product. Keep up the good work !
If I'm using a VPN then why do I need the smart router? Why not just use the VPN without the smart router?
if youre currently in a public network.. you should make your own private network inside. this is not virtual, its a literally phyisical private network to protect your devices from public wifi's activities. thats it

Hi, great review , thank you, can you connect storage to the usb port to share it across the network?
I have one set up just to stream movies thru a usb stick ..
So how is the reliability of the connected VPN network? I am working a US job from another country and can only connect to their network from US locations. I am currently using a second computer and internet sharing via VPN to do this, but need a stable connection and would like to eliminate the second PC. I was thinking of getting this travel router to use.
did you find how to do it? I have the same issue, planning to buy this model
Is there a way to use this router and a Tp Link wifi extender? This all works when the travel router is connected directly to your modem but when I connect it to the wifi extender it doesn’t work :(
If you already have a Wi-Fi connection, what is the benefit of this product?
A travel router segments your devices from the existing Wi-Fi network. Adds a firewall and can add a VPN, which can have added protection from whoever is providing the Wi-Fi network.
Also can be easier if you are travelling with Family and the hotel provides 1 device connected for free, the router can be the "1 device" and middle man the connection to everyone elses.
how about USB tethering from the smartphone to the router and the signal broadcasted via wifi? Does it do it?
Yes i’ve tried with iphone7 plus and i’ve Made some test also with an mod Epson Printer it works like a charm as wireless printer server
so my son's school is a blackout area and we're not sure why .... if he needs to get in touch with anyone he cannot unless he leaves the campus would you recommend this device for this?
I have a deep detailed question that I would highly appreciate if you answered it. So I'm in college now so it doesn't matter because the college share their Password with students, but none the less my question is: In highschool the school computers would have a Ethernet Wire for internet going into them if I had the yellow box then, if I was to plug that ethernet wire into that yellow box would I then be able to actually get the wifi on my phone via the yellow box via the Highschools Ethernet wire?
Again I'd be grateful if this is answered.
Take care and stay safe. 💙
i think so
Sounds like a cool little tool
It is! Just having a Chromecast when travelling now is the best, don't need the macbook, a dongle, HDMI cable, plugged in at the TV, walk over to fiddle with it and change a show. Can now just have my phone or iPad and all set 👌

Hi, did you figure this out? I want to do the same…thanks
hey, ive fooled with those DNS settings and still get no captive portal screens, also my phone and laptop both get disconnected from the Mango while it is attempting to connect to hotel wifi, and constantly disconnects/reconnects and I get nowhere....any help would be great. Have had this issue at two different hotels and 0 luck
Hey Jay,
That sucks you had troubles on your trip!
So you tried the DNS setting on the captive portals guide? docs.gl-inet.com/en/3/troubleshooting/captive_portal/
Also yeah your devices get kicked off whenever you change a major setting as the router reboots and comes back up as a hotel wifi repeater (if that's what you set).
I think there's more captive portals add-ons people have on GitHub, I can try link a few. Probably dependant on what method the hotel had setup, kinda hard to test that feature unless you're at a hotel which well is useless if it doesn't work...
I have to be hard wired into the internet for work but want to travel. Will this work?
I tried two of these routers years ago to set up a VPN between two houses. Turds contently overheat at the slightest traffic even in cool weather. Complete garbage. Never again.
How about port forwarding?
Does it allow you to access your Home Network from anywhere in the world?
Does it have to be connected to a Ethernet or can I bring it in the car with no Ethernet and still have internet?
What if my hotel has wifi but i have to accept user agreement
That's linked in the description under the captive portal guide, you'll need to make DNS routing changes to allow the hotel Wi-Fi to redirect you to their agreement.
can we connect this device to my cloud by making this device wifi repeater and connecting this device to my cloud using ethernet cable?
once you set up repeater with home ISP and travel without LAN cable will the router pickup local Hotel wi-fi?
How can I set up a wireguard client in my Gl i net ?
Can routers be connected to an hotel wifi? Cause Hotel wifi has the code inside a page, the connection is open but not really
can i use it for iptv? my parrents iptv provider wont let me use other network wifi

How will I use this on the cruise so I need to buy a simple wire or it comes with ones
Comes with a LAN cable from memory, but you can just repeat wifi, no need to plug in hard wired
great video, thanks. Can I use this device to access files from my computer that is on a private network across the internet from another computer inside another private network? if no, how can I do this ?
hey mate, you sure can. However you'll need two and it'll take some configuring. I touch on it in my most recent review of the AR750 model and the multi network/node ability.
There's a link in the description of the vid on how to set it up, I haven't had a need to do so but it looks like it'll do what you're after 👍
ruclips.net/video/e0K5bTlXPdY/видео.html
Can you use it to block other wifi interfering?
How many laptops can you add on the Wi-Fi hotspot?
I ordered one, just to mess around with it. I’m wondering why do we need another hardware just to connect to VPN if we already have service like PIA,and PIA have apps for any platforms. Will we get faster speed ? What am I missing here ?
Not sure about speed but with the Killswitch at a router level it'd be more trustworthy, especially since it's running on Linux you then don't have to make sure the android app didn't stuff up or windows had a driver issue for a moment whilst running an update on the background that took out the VPN.
Also can help push a Chromecast through a VPN as well as it just gets the stream URL from the cast device then routes directly through your router
does this extend Wi-Fi and is it wireless?
Does it work for mobile phones
Can I connect this via LAN cable to my ISP Router? And make it as a 2nd router for VPN?
Sure can Donny! That's what I did with my newer review of it's big brother the AR-750s 👉 ruclips.net/video/e0K5bTlXPdY/видео.html
@@camshand so by using this device my wifi device cannot be recognised by the tyrannyc governments right ???
What is the difference between this and the GL-AR300M16?
Hey Addy, looks to me like the M16 can have external antenna's added to increase wireless range. there's a ext model variant that includes them 👉 amzn.to/3GQmsqM
@@camshand I know about the ext model however, the ar300m16 (not ext model) is £29 on amazon and the mt300n-v2 is £33, nowhere tells me the difference and on paper they seem the same but, they cant be right?
I live in US. I am going to be traveling and working from Hungary, Europe for a couple weeks and I would like to keep my US IP address. My workstation use vpn which can only be accessed by USA IP address. CanI use this hardware to hide my current location IP address, and pretend I am still in Usa? Will my company still block me using USS ip address if they detect I use vpn? How guaranteed is that will work?
Best to check with your work as to if this is a breach of their computer use policy, but in general this will work. You'll have to setup a VPN in it's settings, point it to a US based server, then when you connect your laptop to it's Wi-Fi hotspot it'll route to the US.
Is it legal to use it to convert portal wifi to standard wifi for my wifi security camera in university accommodation in Australia? Because I need my room monitored and my camera doesn’t connect to portal wifi….
oooooooooh probs not. I'd recommend reading your University's Computer use Statute, I know for the University that I worked in IT for rebroadcasting the secure network through a personal router was a big no no.
4:06 is how to fix the no internet issue
Yes Edgar, that's the process for setting up a new Wi-Fi access point connection, hopefully your timestamp helps someone find it 👍
Great content! I'm wondering to buy it but may I ask you if the router works fine when you connect it to the notebook usb port? or it needs an external power supply?
Should be fine off a laptop, the product page says it can function off laptops. As long as the port can supply 5v 1A DC you'll be fine 👍
@@camshand Is using a USB to Ethernet Adapter the way to go? I've got an Apple laptop. Thanks!
Can you do the same thing with a WiFi repeater?. I have a rock space 1200
A repeater will usually just rebroadcast a signal only, this is a router with dhcp server, DNS, VPN, much much more than just a repeater but it can also be just a repeater haha.
can you merge networks? Like WiFi, ethernet, and cellular into one?
You can only have one internet in then transmit another. You'd need a enterprise router to configure VLAN and load balancing through multiple internet connections
Hello. I want to buy that router through amazon in the middle of 2022. I want to use it exactly to share ps2 isos by ethernet cable connecting a pendrive through a usb 2.0 port. Could you tell me if currently the factory firmware version of the GLiNet gl-MT300-V2 router can share files over the network with a pendrive inserted through the usb 2.0 port it has? Because I plan to buy that router in 2022 but I want to make sure that the version that comes now of the router can share files over the network through the USB 2.0 port. I hope you can answer my question and help me with that doubt I have. I will be very grateful friend. Thank you
Hi Julian, you can find information about file sharing via the USB 2.0 power on the mango (300v2) here: docs.gl-inet.com/en/3/tutorials/multimedia_file_sharing/#setup-the-dlna-server-on-various-ossoftware
Hopefully this helps with your setup 🙂👍
Great video, although I'm curious about how well this travel router can support game streaming i.e. Stadia?
Hmmmm I haven't got stadia to test with it, however I do believe it doesn't require much bandwidth. Google says at least 35mbps internet so it's be down to the location you're at more than anything
So this doesn't give off it's own wifi signal it just takes a different wifi signal then acts like it's the router
It does give off it's own Wi-Fi signal, you just have to configure it to either repeat/extend and existing network, or piggy back on an existing network to create it's own. In the case of Travelling or in a share house you'd just make your own private network.
is it any good? I never heard of this brand.... I usually use AVM Fritz
Works fine for what I've been using it for. I hadn't seen the AVM Fritz stuff before but they are over 10x the price so if you're after a simple travel router the GL iNet offerings seem much more appealing.
In my review of the AR-750s I do speed tests as well and they both perform pretty good, and for general internet traffic which you'd use when travelling you won't even notice a difference 👉 ruclips.net/video/e0K5bTlXPdY/видео.html
Does this not come with a built in VPN instead of using PIA? I have Nord VPN will this work? How do I drag and drop using nord?
You need to obtain the VPN server file from Nord. It'll be under OpenVPN settings of your subscription
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I was wondering if this is compatible with surfshark?
It is :)
