Hi Mel.. That video was well worth watching.. I have only ever fitted one heater to my main fuel tank, I was on the Brecon's for 10 days in freezing weather, when i came to leave i ran out of diesel 3 mile down the road.. Since then I have all ways used a second tank and run it on red.. We buy it 2,000 ltrs at a time and we pay about 50p ltr.. Its a no brain'er and must be done.. They will also run on home heating fuel.. Cheers bud

Good job Mel. Nice to see someone cut through the bullshit and get straight to the point. Very informative.
I've put a T piece on my main fuel line, a one way valve and a tap. With around half meter of fuel hose in the engine bay. If I run short of red while I'm away, I can fill a 5l Jerry can and chuck that in the heater tank. Also have a switch to trigger the vans own in tank fuel pump relay so there's no extra pumps etc. Works quite nice lol

Because I live in the country side I don’t have gas !!! Just electric,
My house is also not connected the sewer system . And rain water is collected in tanks which makes my water cost nearly nothing,
So my the heating in my house is powered by heating oil last delivery to my house 0.40p a litre 3000 litres
And can also keep your cars heating system warm 🙈🙈🙈

Hi Mel. The only time red diesel was allowed to be used on British roads was during the fuel blockades and the only vehicles that were allowed to use it was lorries that removed dead animal carcasses and waste from the slaughter houses to the rendering plants. All the lorries was escorted with a police escort to make sure the fuel wasn't stolen. Also if you do use red diesel in a vehicle, it's designed to stain the tank and everything it touches so that the customs and excise know if you have been using it. Great video

It's duty free, the only time it's allowed to be used on public highways is by farmers and construction vehicles, it don't stain anything, and your talking bollacks there have never been police escorting vehicles using red diesel in case it was stolen, its readily available and anybody can by it, and as if HMRC, are bothered by some motorists saving £20-£30 by using it on public roads, their resources are used up chasing real tax evaders like those owe hundreds of thousands of pounds

it would be ashame if someone accidentally installed a hidden switch and extra fuel pump, which just happen to switch from road fuel to red fuel, thus allowing you to switch tanks and burn off the red fuel that's in the lines, just incase you get stopped or have inspections (don't forget about the diesel filter, it will need some extra time to flush out red fuel. it may be worth adding solenoid and second line with its own filter so when switched over it would only take a few seconds to clear out of the system, would pay for itself in no time and could be done for less than 300 i'm sure.) Maybe connect another 20 liter tank of red fuel, you know for those really long cold stretches when out in the boonies. All of this being for extreme emergencies only of course, would want to gyp the Queen mum there now would we...

There are easier options than that.. the dye can easily be removed, however the trace chemical is much harder, so although your red looks white, a simple roadside chemical test, would prove otherwise, and hello impound and hefty fine...
Has anyone tried straight kerosene domestical heating oil in one of these? Price per litre is cheaper than red, although I'm not too sure if the lower flash point would make for a weaker combustion?

Biodiesel is a thing of the past here since oil recyclers snatched all the recyclable oil and made it too expensive. Making it involves draino (lyle), methanol, cooking oil and a 44gallon drum - not worth it otherwise - once made and filtered it Is used just like ordinary diesel no need for heating but like I say not economic here any more.

You can get an exemption certificate for red that has to be filled out before you use red on the road. This saves you from draining the tank when you take a vehicle on a public high way. You still have to pay the duty. This certificate must be filled out and you must carry with you on the Journey. You need a certificate for each journey.

Mel, why on earth would you use red diesel when your diesel heater will work perfectly well if not better on kerosene ( heating oil) ?
Its far cheaper and you can get it from the pump at some fuel stations. The vat on red is 20% whereas its only 5% on kero . Not so long ago I payed just over 50p a litre for kero ( heating oil) admittedly that's for a 1000 litres in my home oil tank.

There was a interesting documentary where some Welsh fellow was flogging cheap Irish fuel to his neighbours. Followed for months by customs. Good job Mel. Can you notice the smell inside your van for a while after you've filled your tank?
In the summer when temps are high, the pressure inside the tank may come out through the breather as my motorbike stinks out my shed on hot days although it's petrol. I just open the door for a while though to help sort it out.

    • @Pugwash.

The smell of diesel used to trigger sea sickness when sailing with the engine running for assistance.
Or spilt diesel from filling the tank mid journey as the boat was rocking.
Petrol never ever made me want to vomit.
For this reason I have my heater diesel coming from the main tank although when it comes into the hotter months, if Mel can't smell diesel in his van I may change my mind and fit a tank in the back and use home heating oil as it's even cheaper than red.
