I was misdiagnosed with Graves disease and was at the point of thyroid removal and a lifetime of maintenance medication. Found an article by 2 MDs at the Texas Heart Institute entitled Misdiagnosis of Graves Disease Due to Aspartame Poisoning. I started reading labels and removed aspartame from my diet (it's in everything "diet") and symptoms completely disappeared within 60 days.

Thank you for this timely video Dr. Alan. I was diagnosed with Grave's disease 1.5 month ago after a thyroid storm and my eyes have been changing so rapidly with just about all the symptoms you listed! They're no longer so swollen and red after my total thyroidectomy last week, but I still have lid retraction, lid lag, and dry eyes. Getting consultation for Tepezza soon!
Thank you. First eye doc lined up surgery for cataracts, said would address eye pain and wouldn’t answer any questions. Glad sought second opinion. Doc confirmed cataracts but no surgery until pain & condition corrected first. He set follow up with Internal Medicine Primary for lab work and thyroid check, and neurological - ophthalmologist. Been scary, but this has helped.
Ii remember when my son kept saying his eyes was hurting. Eye Dr sent him to a Dr. He has M.S. of the optic nerve.Crazy how the eyes can tell some of your health. This is very interesting
I was diagnosed with graves disease about ten years ago. The doctor did surgery to remove my thyroid in 2012. Since then my left eye has been bulging and it has bothered me since it started. I have been to several doctors to try to get it fixed but they all tell me it's not severe enough. But when I meet people on a daily basis they seem to think it's plenty severe. For 10 years I wake up with this on my mind and go to bed with it on my mind and I'm tried of it. My feelings stay hurt from people staring and laughing at me. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't want to go out in public anymore and it has effects my job. I decided to get my CDL license think I would be alone to help me but it made things worse. I went to try and get the tempezza medicine and they would not help me. No one understands me or believe me when I tell them what I'm going through. I really need help with this and no one wants to help me. I don't want to go the rest of my life scared to go outside. But I guess I don't have a choice.
I understand exactly what you are going through. I was diagnosed with graves about 8 years ago. I got RAI for it. Now, im dealing with these eye issues, and I feel all the things you do. O just never shared how i felt with anyone. I hope this past year, you have found an answer. I pray that we both do.
Autoimmune diseases in general have similar complementary holistic treatment protocols. Reduce the inflammation through reducing exposure to the inflammatory trigger. Reduce stess and increase deep relaxation. Meier Schneider (the school for self healing ) palming helps with relaxing the eye muscles and optic nerve.) Donna Gates (body ecology diet book and website) and Isabella Wentz (thyroid books and website) use an elimination diet and cleansing to help with reducing inflammation.
I have Graves Disease. I was diagnosed over a decade ago when I had a thyroid storm and ended up hospitalized until they could bring my heart rate down. I have always had really dry red eyes. I had eye pain and I was really sensitive to light at the time. The worst of it got better once my thyroid level came down and I had my thyroid removed, but I still had double vision. I agree that doctors don’t know enough about the eye issues with Graves’ disease, but my family doctor and even my endocrinologist were both pretty clueless about how much I was affected by Graves’ disease. When I tried to tell my family doctor I was having trouble reading and wasn’t all better after surgery, she prescribed me anti-depressants. Seriously. I went to my optometrist after that and she referred me to an ophthalmologist. I wish I had seen him from the beginning because he knew more about Graves’ disease than any other doctor I saw. I was given a lot of eye drops and had prisms made for my glasses to help with the double vision. 5 years later, I developed idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and I was referred back to the same ophthalmologist by my neurologist. I am so grateful to him, and to the neuro-ophthalmologist who eventually treated me.
I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2004. Had a surgical thyroidectomy. Fast forward to 2023, I had all of the symptoms of Graves again!! Lost a crap ton of weight. So they readjusted my meds. NOW…I have many symptoms of TED or GED. How is this possible without having a thyroid?!
All the women in my family have thyroid low thyroid problems. I have a lot of the symptoms including the 3 and 9 o’clock red eye. No matter how many different types of thyroid tests I take over the decades the tests are always “normal” range.
Have you had an ultrasound of the thyroid? My levels were fine but the ultrasound showed something else. Ended up with a partial to a total 10 years apart.
yes. I have hashimoto and chronic dry eye and I have noticed in the past year I have double vision in my good eye ( was born crosseyed and had surgery as a child). None of the eye doctors have mentioned the connection between thyroid issues and dry eye or diplopia
Oh I was just thinking why do I feel like I have sand or dirt in not 1 but both eyes! Immediately I said it could be dry eyes. And I did think thyroid. I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto about a month ago. But to find out I could go blind! That’s insane at my age. I might as well be dead! Who is going to take care of me? I’ve always taken care of me and everyone else. Have you ever heard of anyone getting better after they have all these ailments with their eyes ? I’m doing everything nutrition wise to heal this. I know stress is a biggie, but it’s as though you wake up stressed, it’s anxiety you never knew you had or rather you were not bothered by much and you handled it. I was so strong and healthy and now I’m watching something completely different with my body and mind.
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis ~ Diagnosed December 2010 Hyperparathyroidism ~ “….” Primary Hypothyroidism ~ “…” Sjogren’s Arthritis ~ diagnosed October 1996 My whole life, I have been dealing with severe eye & mouth dryness. I started seeing an endocrinologist in Dec. of 2010. Currently, my eye Dr. has me on a steroid eye drop, because my daily regimen of eye drops has not been enough. Right now, I am waiting two more weeks for the punctal plugs to arrive at the eye Dr.’s office; this procedure will be the sixth time for this type of treatment. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your recent informational videos about dry eyes! 👀
I have ted and looking at me I don’t have the visuals but I sure feel it and live with it. Had strabismus surgery after Tepezza did not work for me . Having a Dr that specializes this is key. I was blessed to have one.
@@DoctorEyeHealth well, my surgeon felt it helped with the muscles with surgery. Instead of having to cut into 4 separate muscles as he normally would, he just cut into 2 for each eye so he felt it lessened the inflammation and toughness of those muscles.
Thank you for all the info!! I’m going to see an ophtalmologist as soon as I get an appointment. Ive also been referred to an endocrinologist. I have hyperthyroidism confirmed by blood work. Going to check for thyroid antibodies on my next blood draw. I had a bunch of weird symptoms. High HR 90-140! (My previous resting was 60bpm!) Scary! So hot allll the time. Tremors. Sometimes visible shaking but almost always feels like I’m vibrating. Scary. Eye symptoms: 👁️ Left eye sclera showing all around iris Pain feels like pressure and sometimes dry sometimes very teary. Looking down is better than straight ahead or up. Driving feels like a strain with more pain.
Aw, my twin! A whole year after experiencing the tremors, palpitations, brain fog and hot flushes, my left eye started to have scleral show. I thought it was ptosis in the right eye and went to the optician twice. I was referred to an ophthalmologist on the second visit in a very blasé manner as optician still thought it was nothing (thank God he did though!). The ophthalmologists at the hospital also seemed to think nothing was wrong but just as they were about to send me home, one of the senior staff asked to look at my eye quickly before I left. He then said the right eyelid wasn’t droopy but that the left eyelid was higher. Cue more eye tests, blood tests and now an endocrinologist appointment scheduled for February - I’m so scared for the future I wish it was something that could be managed with lifestyle changes rather than meds or surgery 😪 I know I’m jumping the gun here - I should wait for the endocrinologist appointment before I start making predictions… Wishing you the very best on your thyroid journey ❤❤

Any tips on finding a good eye doctor? Just had an examination and it wasn’t very thorough. I have RA and diabetes. Sometimes my vision is normal and sometimes everything goes blurry, double vision and I can’t read.
The doctor managing your diabetes should be able to refer you to a credible ophthalmologist. You should be getting yearly dilated exams with diagnostic images to watch for diabetic retinopathy and other issues depending on the treatment of your RA! Check with your PCP but continue being your own advocate! Your vision is your independence! Take good care of it!
highly recommend getting in touch with a retinal specialist to check for any diabetic retinopathy! there are plenty of issues that could occur in the back of the eye
Hi Dr. Eye Health-- FIRST, thanks for your clear videos, and good diction. So many people, even broadcast 'professionals', are so LAZY in their vocal delivery. Just like with vision, voice-delivered content should be clear and immediately comprehensible. ♥ I'm 73 and was diagnosed in my early teens as having hypothyroidism. I took synthroid for a few years. Then re-diagnosed again at 40, have been on low dose synthroid since. Under the care of a great eye specialist for checkups 3x yearly since I had a macular wrinkle that resolved itself. No treatment needed. Now due for cataract surgeries. ***I asked the Dr about something puzzling me since my teen years--one eye sees ( turf grass for instance) with a green tint, one sees with a more blue tint. He'd never encountered this. any comments?
Oh that is interesting! And thank you for your kind words! With color discrepancies I think of medical conditions such as cataracts which can act like a yellow filter and maybe make things look different if the two eyes are not symmetric. In addition, any optic nerve damage can cause color perception changes (such as optic neuritis). But if the eyes are healthy, perhaps the way the retina formed as a child??? hard to know.
I have hypothyroidism and graves disease this is worst I would never wish this even to my enemy. my eye gets super dry my orbital area gets inflammed and when I blink i feel like something is in my eye foreign body sensation went to so many drs but nobody helps specially this year Im facing alot just pray for me that I heal soon
My first indication of thyroid problems was seeing double. Very scary. My right eye always feels like there's something in it. Coincidentally, or maybe not, that is the same side as the thyroid nodule I have.
I learned yesterday finally that after 6 or 7 eye Dr's and my own amazing endocrinologist that even after a thyroidectomy due to Graves Disease you can STILL GET TED 😢. I wish more doctors knew this. The last 2 1/2 years have been hell. It was my daughter's eye surgeon who did her strabismus surgery that actually told me to get to TED eye Dr and yes I could still get Zted After a thyroidectomy.
Hi Dr. Allen, I was diagnosed with Graves in 2016 while I was in my 1st thyroid storm put on medication for 2 yrs and finally was somewhat in "normal" range but my eye site was all over the place. in November of 2018 I ended up in another thyroid storm and nodules my 3rd endocrinologist (saving grace) tried to get my levels "normal" again with no luck and at the end of March of 2019 I had my thyroid removed. My levels where up and down and in 2020 I was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My eye site was all over the place I was in and out with my eye Dr. And several others for 2nd opinions and I have allergies to solutions. In 2021, and to today my a1c and thyroid levels are now normal and I feel great, however my eyesite has still been allover. My endo says it's rare but I could still get TED, the other eye Dr's I've seen say no, since July of 2022 I have had horrible dry eyes. I've been tested twice for sojourns, Noth time negative, it also started after getting covid, and didn't have any luck with restasis. I've tried so many drops, masks, humidifiers, and taping my eyes shut at night as well as new eye Dr's with no luck. I just paid out of pocket to go back to my old eye Dr since he known my health history for the last 20+ years. Sorry for the long rant. So my question for you is have you seen anyone with out their thyroid still have TED? I was given some samples of the other drops so I'm hoping for better results that restasis. Do you have a recommendation on hydration sleep masks? I love your channel and all the stuff you post! (my subscription might of been on my old phone other acct) Lastly thanks 😊

I'm 28 years old and I've been having itching, irritated eyes as if they're swollen or sore. I feel like I need to massage them or rest them constantly. I don't have any bulging or double vision though. I'm gonna get an eye exam next week and see what they say
Hi colleague... I had a Px with Graves. A year ago he achieved fusion with 9-BD LE, 4-BO RE (I splited those prisms). Last month he achieved fusion with 17-BD LE, 9-BO RE (first time progressive glasses) He followed-up by different MD's and other Optometrists in my country, but last year was the first time he saw one picture again.
I started the meds for graves 2 weeks ago, and I think one of my eyes, maybe both, have TED. One eye looks larger than it used to be, with no symptoms, the other with a much lower lid, especially when I’m tired and is red when I wake up. Guess I need to see an ophthalmologist. Update: the eye that looks larger, now looks swollen above the eye lid, almost closing off my tear duct.
In 2016 l was diagnosed with Graves Disease, Exophthalmos / T.E.D and Thyroid Disease. I still suffer from dry eyes where my eyelids don’t shut at night and l can’t stand the sunshine, it makes my eyes weep, l have been taping my eyes shut with paper tape ever since.
I love your videos! They’re so informative at helping me understand my recent eye issues. My vision issues have become really bad over the past year with reoccurring Uveitis, Blepharitis, and chronic dry eye. I’ve been taking steroid eye drops for about a year now with little to no consistent improvement. Have you ever heard of radioactive iodine therapy causing or worsening dry eye syndrome?

Hi doctor. I've been following you for sometime and your content has helped me a lot. But I have a problem and I don't seem to be able to find the answer anywhere on the internet: My vision is flickering like a PC monitor refresh rate. It's clearly noticable when I look at the sky or the moonlight or even my textbooks. I haven't been able to read a thing for my university exams. I've searched everywhere about it, but I couldn't find anything. I'm ready scared.
Hey Javad. Thanks for the question. I wish I could offer more help but flickering such as you describe sounds like it could either be a retinal or neurological thing. The best thing would be to see a local eye doctor and if the eyes are healthy, perhaps they can refer you to a neurologist if needed. Do you also experience migraines headaches? I wish you the best on your exams.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for your response. When I try to read, yes, I get a headache, but normally, no, I don't. What I've been struggling with is mostly reading a book. I don't even have a problems while reading on my phone or on my laptop. It's not that the flickering is really obvious in my daily life, it's just becomes more visible when I want to read. Or to be more specific, when I try to focus on something. My university has been online for the past 2 years, I've been using my laptop constantly, and my sleeping schedule in the past 3 years hasn't been that good either. I've been indoors for the most part of the past 2 years, and haven't been geting enough daylight, even though I basically live in a desert. I've kinda been a night owl, reading, writing and using my laptop (a lot!) trough the night for the past 3 years. The lighting in my room is relatively ok. I use florescent lights.
@@DoctorEyeHealth I should also mention that unless I want to read or focus on a small object, the flicker between light and dark is barely noticeable. Even when I'm reading, I should think a little to find out why I can't read clearly. Its not that the text gets blurry when I try to read. And also, the darkening is not completely dark, it's kinda gets a bit dimmer for a millisecond, then becomes normal again for another millisecond, and the cycle continues. I barely feel it, unless I focus.

Doctor I’ve had a fever for the last 12 days. About a few days ago I noticed clusters of individual black spots. Now I see more and more of these. Am I seeing disease in my eyes?
Does anyone know if this shows up in one eye more ? I am on my second Brain Tumor so I had a Brain Tumor removed 10 years via Craniotomy and now I have a new Brain Tumor so when my eye started showing these signs the Doctors were focusing on the Tumor so I’m just trying to get as much information as I can because I also have Epilepsy and the Doctors Focused on the first Brain Tumor and my Wife actually figured out it was Epilepsy but I’m not saying my doctors are bad at their jobs they are great they have literally saved my life it’s just hard to diagnose someone who is in rough shape from head to toe.
One Dr could not even read the ecography report, and told me it's stress and game medicine to sleep better. This is in European country. It's very depressing when Doctors who are supposed to help patients don't know what they are doing.

I keep telling my optometrist about a severe down drag like double vision in my left eye, and the right eye goes up. I have had thyroid levels checked many times due to weight issues, & I have been told everything is normal. It is absolutely horrific for me to watch TV, or really focus on anything that involves light. I just wonder if this is a possibility for me, even though my levels always show normal...
Wow, those bulging eyes ! I remember seeing photos of people with these eyes and had became popular for it. Me, and possibly them probably didn't know it's possibly a thyroid problem 🤔🇬🇧

Doc confirmed cataracts but no surgery until pain & condition corrected first. He set follow up with Internal Medicine Primary for lab work and thyroid check, and neurological - ophthalmologist. Been scary, but this has helped.
I love that we can learn a lot from your videos! 😎
Hello friend have you tried herbal remedy? I got from Dr iyaremoses on RUclips channel, and am free from hypothyroidism..
Thank you so much Alex!!!
It is heart warming to hear silence again without sound disturbance, all thanks to Dr iyaremoses on RUclips channel for his herbs remedy....
I'm in the same boat as u I'm currently paying 4 surgery 2 fix it.
@Terencerobbins I feel for you. I am so sorry for, what you are going through. I wish I could contact you for someone for you to talk to.
Thank you Dr for the informations. Can be treated and healed.
Thank you 😊 a doctor from sri lanka 🇱🇰 🙏.
Thank you for watching!!!!! How are thing in Sri Lanka?
I had a lot of eye problems, and supplemented with iodine specific supplements which made a big difference.
I think we are on the same page here. It’s crazy 😢😢
I just got it and this video really helped me to see if I had it and I had 4 of the signs
Thank you !
Hey that's great to hear!

This was an excellent informative simple to understand video. Got to the points immediately Thank u. Well done.
Oh I was just thinking why do I feel like I have sand or
dirt in not 1 but both eyes!
My whole life, I have been dealing with severe eye & mouth dryness.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Sorry to hear Tepezza didn’t work out
@@DoctorEyeHealth well, my surgeon felt it helped with the muscles with surgery. Instead of having to cut into 4 separate muscles as he normally would, he just cut into 2 for each eye so he felt it lessened the inflammation and toughness of those muscles.
You covered the topic very well. 👍
you really have a lot of eye tricks for an eye doctor. Your job suits you well.. Thanks doc
EXELENT EXPLAINT DR YOU ARE AMAZING WELL DONE GOOD EDUCATION FOR US ALL
Thank you for all the info!!
Scary.
Eye symptoms: 👁️
Left eye sclera showing all around iris
Pain feels like pressure and sometimes dry sometimes very teary.
Cue more eye tests, blood tests and now an endocrinologist appointment scheduled for February - I’m so scared for the future I wish it was something that could be managed with lifestyle changes rather than meds or surgery 😪
I know I’m jumping the gun here - I should wait for the endocrinologist appointment before I start making predictions…
Wishing you the very best on your thyroid journey ❤❤
GOOD VIDEO ! . My Thyroid test came out fine. I am still suffering with this problem, only with my left eye.
how is your eye now??
@@noorulhuda4729 Thanks for asking. My left eye it has been just the same. This is when I read, watch T.V., texting, even playing my guitar, and when I focus with my left eye. It is a terrible burning, irritating and painful situation specially once it gets dark at night and I just do not sleep because of it. And all my left part of my body from my head down to the the sole of my feet and also my heart beats faster. it is also a terrible feeling. My prescribed glasses help some. This is beem going on since I was 26 year old, now I am 62. When it first started I went to an Ophthalmologist and He gave me some drops with a red label I remember and I kept it, and I was just fine again, two years later this terrible feeling came back to me, so I went back to the same ophthalmologist, He was from China Very Good Doctor, and asked him to give the same drops because I took the little battle with me with the red label, He din't want to give them to me once again after two years, He told me that the same drops could harm me, and I asked why ?, after two years ?, yes he told me. Too bad I threw away after some time the eye drops bottle. I wish I had it with me, because I din't know what it was. Once Again Thanks For Your Attention. I keep Watching Your Videos In My cellular.

Thank you for this video, i've been treated for my thyroid for over 20 years, and I've had at least five of these symptoms come and go. But now my left eye is losing vision it seems. I have to get this checked out. I didn't know that they may be related.
Any tips on finding a good eye doctor? Just had an examination and it wasn’t very thorough. I have RA and diabetes. Sometimes my vision is normal and sometimes everything goes blurry, double vision and I can’t read.
Read reviews of the eye doctor, if high reviews and many people have been there then I would go there too
The doctor managing your diabetes should be able to refer you to a credible ophthalmologist. You should be getting yearly dilated exams with diagnostic images to watch for diabetic retinopathy and other issues depending on the treatment of your RA! Check with your PCP but continue being your own advocate! Your vision is your independence! Take good care of it!
It is heart warming to hear silence again without sound disturbance, all thanks to Dr iyaremoses on RUclips channel for his herbs remedy....
highly recommend getting in touch with a retinal specialist to check for any diabetic retinopathy! there are plenty of issues that could occur in the back of the eye
Hi Dr. Eye Health-- FIRST, thanks for your clear videos, and good diction. So many people, even broadcast 'professionals', are so LAZY in their vocal delivery. Just like with vision, voice-delivered content should be clear and immediately comprehensible. ♥
I'm 73 and was diagnosed in my early teens as having hypothyroidism.
You doing amazing work dear brother with pure heart and pure soul 💞👍
Thank you kindly!

I learned yesterday finally that after 6 or 7 eye Dr's and my own amazing endocrinologist that even after a thyroidectomy due to Graves Disease you can STILL GET TED 😢. I wish more doctors knew this. The last 2 1/2 years have been hell. It was my daughter's eye surgeon who did her strabismus surgery that actually told me to get to TED eye Dr and yes I could still get Zted After a thyroidectomy.
hey doc can you please make a separate video on superior limbic keratocunjunctivitis treatments and conjunctivochalsis

(my subscription might of been on my old phone other acct)
Lastly thanks 😊
Great vid. I got it bang on. Someone i know has a slow working of the tyroidgland. Above that OD was amblyopia with less the 0.05 vision. She was constantly complaining about dryness(it fellt like sandpaper, that bad). The best i could do was get her te wear glasses and using hylo gel. Thats the most relief she fellt in years...

Brilliant. How does one find such a well-informed doctor? Are there specialties in health above merely checking for needed refraction?

Hi doctor how can I get rid of the bulging eyes?? Like how can I make the eyes back to normal?
I'm 28 years old and I've been having itching, irritated eyes as if they're swollen or sore. I feel like I need to massage them or rest them constantly. I don't have any bulging or double vision though. I'm gonna get an eye exam next week and see what they say
Is it necessary to have all the signs before consulting to a doctor? Thanks.
Hi colleague...
I had a Px with Graves.
A year ago he achieved fusion with 9-BD LE, 4-BO RE (I splited those prisms).
Last month he achieved fusion with 17-BD LE, 9-BO RE (first time progressive glasses)
He followed-up by different MD's and other Optometrists in my country, but last year was the first time he saw one picture again.
Good doctor
I started the meds for graves 2 weeks ago, and I think one of my eyes, maybe both, have TED. One eye looks larger than it used to be, with no symptoms, the other with a much lower lid, especially when I’m tired and is red when I wake up. Guess I need to see an ophthalmologist. Update: the eye that looks larger, now looks swollen above the eye lid, almost closing off my tear duct.
I learned so much
Love the facial hair doc. You look great :)
How is that working for you???
I love your videos! They’re so informative at helping me understand my recent eye issues. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease that was treated with radioactive iodine therapy and now I have acquired hypothyroidism.

Good day doctor I was recently diagnosed with thyroid eye disease Right eye I have severe pain on right side of face ear and skull Is that normal for this condition Cheek is also very numb Thank you
Hi doctor. I've been following you for sometime and your content has helped me a lot.
But I have a problem and I don't seem to be able to find the answer anywhere on the internet:
My vision is flickering like a PC monitor refresh rate.
