    Me and my friend are making a massive dnd campaign, the first chapter is a open ocean adventure. We are planning a shipwreck for a Sea Hag lair, so we are making a aquatic Banderhobb for this encounter. I’m thinking about making it look like Angler fish version of the regular Banderhobb.

    I'd love to see you do either a cyclops or an ogre encounter

    The Bard in my party had been a kidnap target of the BBEG since the beginning (so far the rest of the party prevented his being snatched away- but BBEG wants him alive) So I was going to have a Hag in disguise pretend to be a fan during a performance and ask for a lock of his hair or a braid from his beard. Not sure yet if Bard will give it willingly, but since I plan to have this encounter take place during a tavern concert among friendly folk, I'm hoping Bard won't be suspicious. (I'll figure something else out if he doesn't give up the lock of hair) But anyway, the hag in disguise will then create a Banderhobb to come kidnap the Bard and if the rest of the party can't rescue him this time- He'll wind up in the hag's lair and hopefully they can save him there (Not ready for the BBEG to get him at this stage)
    BUT I was originally thinking there would be lots of dice rolls to see if the Banderhobb is actually able to swallow the Bard and hop away with him. I am really loving this idea of the tongue grab being an automatic swallow! That will get things moving for the chase! I also love the idea of swinging vines- But I think I will stick with the Banderhobb using its usual methods of movement.
    I've had a Banderhobb mini for years- before I even started DM'ing. Now that I'm running my own homebrewed campaign, I've been wanting to use it. I came up with the hag being one of BBEG's minions and needing a lock of hair early on, but I wanted to wait until the players leveled up a bit before springing this on them. But now really excited to utilize the instant swallow method you mentioned here!

    Changing it very slightly where anyone brought down to zero is stabilized in their guts, I have a witch's apprentice who has a plush toad that can turn into a Banderhob, and if anything was to bring the kid down to zero, it'll swallow her up and hop away taking her to safety.

      OMG This was great. My party has just grown to lvl 4 so I've got some time to sneakily set this up. This is so much better than what I was thinking. They're going to love/hate this.

    I already have started something with banderhobbs getting bits from the players from a goblin assualt on the town they were in. This will be a good scene to use for the banderhobb capturing one of the party member's love interests!

    Dude thank you so much for building this encounter it's like a dream come true :') I totally dig your bomb belly idea! I always run encounters with the idea of messing with my players. When I ran a chase scene the players were in a wagon it had about 50hp they could use things like mend to restore some lost hit points it was being carried by 2 draft horses that were dashing. The party was being pursued by six gargoyles and four dragon wyrmling. Also several rounds later a zombie dragon would fly in emerge from the clouds above. Their job was to fend off the pursuers with ranged attacks or so I thought. One of my players was a tabaxi with 50' of rope and a glider also with the shield Master feat. He proceeded to put on the glider tie the rope around his waist tie the other end to the wagon he then jumped off the back and became the first cat kite. He then proceeded to Glider next to the creatures and knock them prone he was also a barbarian that excels at this stuff. That fight did not go the way I thought but was an insanely fun game.

      Hahaha I love it. I tend to run games that lean toward a more serious storyline and setting (except for one-shots, which are always ridiculous), but even the most serious games need moments of levity. And the nuttier the encounter, the nuttier the player ideas become!

    Personally, I would let two of the creatures go into action. The first one grabs a member of the group and when everyone runs to save that, the second creature attacks the actual target - and shadow strides away as well. The second creature turns 180° in the other direction and then runs off as well, so that the remaining group members can now toss a coin to decide which of the two they want to follow and save. ...and who might have been the actual target and who the distraction (who is presumably just released at some point because it is unimportant to the creatures).

    Thus far an idea I had was due to the high strength, why not make it a minion of an Annis Hag? It could even work where she gets children to misbehave and eventually convinces them to run away from home, then sends the Banderhobb to the town/village to swallow the children and bring them back. Simple enough interest hook I think.

    This sounds like great ridiculous fun! I had to look up what a banderhobb was and thatdoesn't often happen to me so well done!
    Spice it up even further you say? What if instead of trying to steal a thing, the Banderhobbs were simply agents of a lonely mage (deranged gnome feels right to me, but hag or anything else can work too)? The thing they're stealing is friendship. The goodie goodies might feel bad and engage with them and nothing will sate the need for attention. We're talking stage 5 clinger here. Play into every cliché crazy ex-lover thing you can... maybe the mage even is an ex-lover just for fun. Horny bards beware!!
    Have you considered a Rakshasa video? I'd love to see what you come up with for that! Great job, Matt!

      Hahaha a stage 5 clinger is a terrific NPC idea. I've implemented one before and it's always good fun.
      I'll definitely put Rakshasa on the list!

    What happens to the player who is swallowed at first? Just need to sit out the chase or do they have actions they can take while swallowed? What about other party members that get swallowed along the way?

    • @HiddenNerdySide
      @HiddenNerdySide  2 года назад

      It doesn't specifically state an escape DC (which is a bit of an oversight, IMO), but I'd say your players can roll contested STR checks to get out if they wish.
      Definitely don't want to give your players zero options, but they are on a timer since damage is ticking every round :)

      @hatman2961 Год назад

      Or alternatively a creative and humorous option in case one of your players (the target) has to miss a session. Since the banderhobbs need the target alive and their swallow doesn't kill there should be little worry about accidentally bringing about a situation of "your character died should've been to last session."
