Thank you marc for all the videos I've struggled alot with the mental game of art now im studying and am in school im heading the right way and its because of you
Thanks Marc! Will be leaving my notes here so I can find them later. 1. Copy what you see (whether real life or photo reference, just do your best representing it) 2. Study what you copied (study the fundamentals, learn more about what you just drew. anatomy? perspective? color theory? look into it, educate yourself, find the answers to the questions you likely had while copying) 3. Draw from imagination Instead of seeing and copying, you can observe better and take in more information and you have studied relevant theory, so you can construct drawings with solid structure instead of just copying. Repeat. When drawing anything for which you have more experience: News steps: 1. Construct what you observe (observing is more than seeing. there's an analysis to the process now since you know more about the theory. you can understand what you see better) 2. Study the fundamentals of what you observed (instead of copied) 3. Practice from imagination Repeat until Art God. Ez. State of mind (how good you are at focusing): MOTIVATION 1. Urgency: Well-researched fundamental of learning. Makes everything you learn stick a lot better. - Learn with the intent to teach. - Publicly announce you're working on a project - A bet - Setting a clear goal for yourself on schedule 2. Study DELIBERATELY - Study w/o distractions - You can have music on for creation process, but when STUDYING ART, no phone, no music, avoid all distractions - Study with structure (you need a curriculum to follow from simpler to more complex notions) 3. Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) - 80% outcomes caused by 20% of causes - 20% of theory allows you to create 80% of what you can imagine - So focus of learning and practicing what will give you the most results ART FUNDAMENTALS: - Construction - Perspective - Gesture - Anatomy - Design - Color and light theory - Composition - Storytelling Don't get lost of details that have very little impact on end result. Focus on few skills that will allow you to do the MOST. It's not always obvious what 20% of study will give you your 80%, but it's such an important thing to try to find out if you want to get better faster and working less. Often looks like ignoring extreme cases like complicated poses or perspectives in favor of subjects you are most likely to draw frequently, like neutral poses, simple perspectives, character construction and getting good at that first before moving onto more complicated things.
You take rlly good notes! I'D just like to add on what Marc said about copying. While copying, I suggest you write down all. Your questions as they pop in your head (eg. How do they get the glossy green eye look or how do they show so much depth in his drawing?) and at the end of your study, try to act like you are teaching the concept to someone else (feyman technique). I haven't tried this myself but I will, and I bet it'll work.
I really feel like your video is a great idea of how to learn intelligently with intent. When I was doing art without relying on observation and references, when it came to building on the basics of everything, such as cloth and drapery, perspective and anatomy, improvement was minimal because while when I looked at the fundamentals, and I understood on a basic principle on how these fundamentals tied together to create the image in front of me, I for the life of me could not employ that in my own art. My art looked flat and lifeless. Observation and breaking that down is a huge part of aiding in your understanding of how elements work with each other, and how you can combine them to manifest an image that gives your art life, realism and shape. Naturally, talking about fundamentals, it all comes down back to FIRST LEARNING ABOUT THEM. You're very right about the 80/20 principle - that's a very efficient method in measuring your confidence for what you're trying to recreate. And when you combine all these learning elements together - observation with intent, building on fundamentals, etc. you're able to progress in a much faster and efficient way than before. Don't be afraid to use references, don't be afraid to start observing from real life. You can get out a sketchbook or a piece of paper or even just your drawing program and start anytime. It sounds like a daunting task especially to people like me who had not worked from life before, and were afraid our flaws would become even more apparent through that, but really, it helps. Great video, Marc! Love all of your videos and the tips in them, you helped me and a bunch of other aspiring artists a lot. 👍
Unfortunatly the urgency one does not apply to me because I frequently freeze if I have this kind of demand, but the rest is great! Specially the observing techniques.

For me I've found when I structure things out I tend to do better in terms of staying focused I've also made a goal this year to try and complete one piece of fan art each month so I actually draw rather than just practice 24/7 and not draw. This is really helpful actually. I've recently realized that while I can draw hands very well from observation, when I get to drawing my characters, I can't seem to imagine anything well... I want to get better at drawing, to be able to draw characters. I currently have the time to practise but my mind just isn't there. Been feeling this way for a while and it's really annoying lol. Thanks for all your videos!
Great content! but please stop using the term "hard work" in this context. "Hard work" doesn't equal to "not smart" or "unoptimized" way of working. You don't need to defame the term "hard work" just to highlight the term "work smart". I know you are doing it for clickbait but its just not correct. Fyi: Hard work can be optimized as possible based on the points you have given, but still can be called hard work because someone might have finished a lot of art in short span of time due to working efficiently thus working efficiently or smartly coexists with working hard (being industrious, going past 100% etc). Hard work is a different modifier than which is always misunderstood. Hope you get my point Marc and not ruin the term "hard work" again!
i actually think im hopeless at this point. i dont understand anything being said and half of the words said i dont even know what they mean. judging by the other comments i assume this is great information but me myself i just dont get it.

Words I live by "The tiniest dream you try to make happen is worth more then the biggest dream you never attempt" and it's artest like Marc making that tiny dream that much bigger.👍
May I make a suggestion? Your videos are lovely and informative however for someone who has ADHD I find it helpful if the tutor is doing what they are saying in the video instead of a video timeplase of a sketch that isn't related to the topic. I can practice the methods he's doing whilst listening. For example step 2 says study what I have observed, it would be cool to see you drawing next to a reference and breaking it down? Maybe you have done this in your other videos, I'm quite new to the channel, I'm really enjoying your content so far but I've noticed many art tutors on RUclips fall into time-lapse drawing voice overs without showing a demonstration of their Methods
I was having a recent discussion about "How long does it takes to become good?", How long it took you to get good Marc? Another question that was mentioned in that discussion. How much is, too much gesture drawing? I had seen people mentioning how much they do, and I think it would be an overkill according to the rule "PRACTICE LESS, IMPROVE FASTER" As a beginner it is hard to pinpoint certain topics, when looking/copying at references. Sure, I think most people would able to tell that anatomy is needed, etc. But topics like shading/lighting might be more challenging to find the right tutorial, specially if the goal is to get an style similar to a favorite artist. Talking about Shading/Lighting, I had been trying to follow the tutorial you have for shading/lighting here in youtube, but the tone you use for the "tinted shadows" gives me a dirty look for the shading, I use CSP. Any advice? Hope you get to read my message. Thank you for posting content, a lot of you videos are useful.

Thanks a lot, Marc. Your teaching it's priceless. Well, it has a price, and I'm very excited for getting your art program in the future, for now, you just earn a new member of your channel, hoping I can thank you enough for this skill and determination you're giving me!
I never practiced fundamentals or studied specifically, it's so boring,I do watch Tutorials but never practice,it probably would have helped but it's boring af,I just learned from observation and experience,my drawings were my practice, that's why I improved so slowly
How the fuck does this even work? So I can just stop drawing for a year, and my art won't get worse? Every time I don't draw for a long period of time it looks like a blind toddler drew it.
Your right. I should study the specific parts of art that I want to use to create things. I should dedicate time to specifically faces instead of practicing only basic shapes even if I can't draw those shapes very well yet. I would also love to hear any suggestions anyone has for someone completely new
I just started drawing, never have before! I'm using an iPad and clip studio but all the buttons and tools are so daunting and confusing to me, is there anyway to combat this and make my time easier?
Drawing isn’t supposed to be hard it’s supposed to be enjoyable you can get frustrated at times when a part of the art doesn’t connect,so basically calling it practice really isn’t really a problem if you enjoy it art style is a difference, So just practice for the sake of just enjoying try not to compare yourself to others because they have probably drawn longer than what you usually do
If you ever need to learn how to draw hair, just draw bunch of bananas and then color The bananas and then you color the top in the bottom of the banana, and do that with all the others
I can’t draw from imagination but it’s much easier to draw from reference. I thought it was my bad memory. But now I feel inspired to work on this. Thank you!
im 23. i havent drawn since i was 8 and just bought my self a wacom tablet. it is beyond kind and awesome of you to just hand out those practic files for free. much love, ill be watching more of your content for guidance.
I'm 21 and bought my tablet around the same time as you, I hope your journey goes great and you get to the skill that you love! How has it been for you so far? For me I have mostly been doing photo reference drawings but recently have been doing art of games I enjoy. I am just now trying to get back into studying with gesture drawing
When im drawing characters for example, heres what i like to do: -make 1-3 iconic traits of the character (for example:female, knight armor, giant sword) -from the traits/iconic things, create the rest of the character, like body type or personality -close your eyes, focus, and allow your mind to "print" the image on your eyelids -recreate what you saw -draw the same character in different poses/perspectives -add detalils and colors -done
Are you interested in selling the exercises and assignments that you have on your art school program? I am looking to purchase exercises to ease me back in to it

Literally every how to art guide.
Step 1) draw a sketch
Step 2) just fucking draw the whole thing
i actually think im hopeless at this point. i dont understand anything being said and half of the words said i dont even know what they mean. judging by the other comments i assume this is great information but me myself i just dont get it.
I'm starting to get back into the basics of my drawings, which is a little annoying but I know I need to, so watching this will hopefully help me get a little faster.
Did you really just rephrase a hearted comment?
@@accountpc4311 He gets a new one… THIS TIME :D

Omg this is like 70% copied from another comment💀
@@WorkingtobeaDoctor yup, he just rephrased it, got lucky he escaped with a warning, lol
1. Contruct what I observed -> study from what I observed -> practice from imagination.
2. Practice diliberately and with Urgency
3. practice 80% of what is important.
I had seen people mentioning how much they do, and I think it would be an overkill according to the rule "PRACTICE LESS, IMPROVE FASTER"
As a beginner it is hard to pinpoint certain topics, when looking/copying at references.
Good timing! I was drawing less and less these days!
"you are not beautiful when you cry"
Im so glad that i found this!! Very helpful!
I've been struggling with how to study better. I tend to just do the same thing over and over again and didnt see any differences
Mark, I must say this.... I started watching you and really absorbing everything you say and this year I decided to break the mental barrier that I created with drawing. Thank you for sharing your experience for free here on youtube. Maybe someday I can buy your payed stuff and give you some support other than subbing and liking the video. Much love ❤
I WAS STUDYING FEMALE ANATOMY AND MY MOM OPENED THE DOOR 😭
Thank you for teaching me!
@ 1:00 What's the music here? I love this song :D
My problem is that i don't know where to start, if i start learning anatomy, perspective or color theory,
Even if I'm not a beginner i don't know how to continue and I feel like I'm just wasting time without improving
me too, if i look at a drawing and just copy i only know how to draw it then and i can only draw that, not a different pose
It's been a year and a day since I subscribed to your channel and I have truly improved so much and I'm really happy with my lvl and now I value the observation skill the most I always have lack of attention but now I'll say I'm good at it thanks to your tutorials and your vids!
P. S
I payed the class fee
Im so glad that my self taught art learning process are coincidentally followed every method in this video. Glad through those I do improve little faster than the people in my age or faster than others who learn arts for same time. These are valueable and useful to guide those method.great video. Hope I could improve more and faster
этот совет очень помог, спасибо! Еще мне нравятся художники Kim Jung Ji и Araki Hirohiko, мне нравится рисовать в интуитивной перспективе персонажей с использованием кубов сфер и цилиндров без референсов, еще раз спасибо!!
1. Copy what you see (photo reference, art, etc)
2. Study fundamentals of what you copied (anatomy, colour theory, look into it)
3. Practice what you study and learn about your subject
1. Construct what you observe
2. Study what you observe
3. Practice what you study
Urgency - Learn as if you were to teach. Schedule and goals, put yourself on the spot, a bet…
ex. Planning character fight, practive fight poses and gesture, practice relevant anatomy, figure out the design and some backgrounds, find inspiration, etc….
Urgency = motivation and retains information
Study deliberately - Study with no distractions.
Turn phone off, study with a structure. Make a study plan or a curriculum.
Pareto principle - 80/20 rule. 80% outcome = 20% cause.
20% of theory = 80% of imagination. Work on what gives you best result.
Learn to draw something first. (Ex, spend 20% of time working on simple body before going onto designs)
Fundamentals :
Construction perspective anatomy design gesture, colour and light theory, storytelling, light theory
I wanna drawing a juicy arts 👁👄👁💅
How the fuck does this even work? So I can just stop drawing for a year, and my art won't get worse? Every time I don't draw for a long period of time it looks like a blind toddler drew it.
Your right. I should study the specific parts of art that I want to use to create things. I should dedicate time to specifically faces instead of practicing only basic shapes even if I can't draw those shapes very well yet. I would also love to hear any suggestions anyone has for someone completely new
Eh, tbh art makes me depressed, it's not fun at all, it sucks :/ Even though I'm being told I'm already good at it, there's no point.
They’re telling me im not smart
Lol true
Guys…do you recommend this channel for learning from zero? Cuz I have been lost for months and lost the passion….Inspire me anyone
I just started drawing, never have before! I'm using an iPad and clip studio but all the buttons and tools are so daunting and confusing to me, is there anyway to combat this and make my time easier?
watch the video in 2x playback speed to learn the lesson faster which teaches u how to improve faster, therefore making u improve *even faster*
Ah yes, I try by dedicating 80 hours a day
I don’t even care if this is an actually good tutorial video
the title and thumbnail are god awful
and incredibly invalidating
Damn I really want to draw like Murata. Someday I will thanks to the "perfect practice" And hardwork.
Can you please make a general schedule to follow with this 2 hour a day practice????
Hi
🏆
I'm going to art school soon with you helping me realize my passion for art, thank you
Oh thank you, I wanted to make a FNF mod but I feel like my art design sux and people wont like it
Drawing isn’t supposed to be hard it’s supposed to be enjoyable you can get frustrated at times when a part of the art doesn’t connect,so basically calling it practice really isn’t really a problem if you enjoy it art style is a difference, So just practice for the sake of just enjoying try not to compare yourself to others because they have probably drawn longer than what you usually do
This guy is cringe, but the really really good, nostalgic kind of cringe
"think about what you're studying"
*Me working to be a nsfw artist:*
Thanks!
The best of all is that I can learn English while drawing lol.
Thank you!
Do I have hearing problems or do I hear Little Big Planet music in the background? 😄
If you have seen the Neuron Activation meme, it's pretty much the short version of this.
We need Spanish subtitles for Latino audiences like me. :)
Yes you should practice in better ways but don’t practice less
Did not help I still draw like shit. Am I doing something wrong?
I watch all ur vids in 2x times speed is that Urgent enough 😰
*reads the title:* yes, that's why I started from 0, learning to draw while I took commissions.
your advice are misguided, only aim for concept art,
I feel I really need 80hour a day 😅 to be good in digital art hehehe
im 23. i havent drawn since i was 8 and just bought my self a wacom tablet. it is beyond kind and awesome of you to just hand out those practic files for free. much love, ill be watching more of your content for guidance.
When im drawing characters for example, heres what i like to do:
-make 1-3 iconic traits of the character (for example:female, knight armor, giant sword)
-from the traits/iconic things, create the rest of the character, like body type or personality
-close your eyes, focus, and allow your mind to "print" the image on your eyelids
-recreate what you saw
-draw the same character in different poses/perspectives
-add detalils and colors
-done
I wonder what tiny Mark had to say he looks like a better artist than big Mark
He’s never coming back, I ate him
"80 hours a day"
Another reality: thats ease.
Man he would make such a good NSFW artist
I rather dislike proper practicing techniques, but I dislike my drawings more, so I suppose I better get to it.
Looks like you have a new subscriber!!
Are you interested in selling the exercises and assignments that you have on your art school program?
I am looking to purchase exercises to ease me back in to it
