Probably the BEST review Mitch has done. Excellent delivery - despite being barely able to contain his excitement. Well explained and concise, making a strong case for this interface.
Wow Apogee 2022. Great news
I think every since MOTU launched the M2 and M4 pretty much disrupt the entry interface market with its unmatch conversion specs and low latency drives that over took the Scarlett. Now everyone coming out thr wood works with with the same form factor entry level interface.
Exactly. Best bang-for-buck interfaces by far.
I have an M4, it's loopback feature and latency performance is amazing. The headphone output volume is way higher than my old Focusrite stuff.
@@tonygunz21 id14 mk2?
@@Mope333 Another interface that I'd choose before the Apogee. The Audient the two combi-jack inputs for mic/line, a separate instrument in, and 4 output channels. I'd be willing to bet the converters on the Audient are at least as good, if not better than what's in the apogee. Even if they shaved $100 off the price, there would still be interfaces, like the Motu that I'd choose first. I guess they're pricing it based on the reputation they've acquired due to their pro-level gear.
@@tonygunz21 Yeah, it does seem like, more realistically, if they’d cut corners somehow on externals and aesthetic, they probably could’ve shaved $50 off and had these flying off shelves. I do think aesthetic considerations are valid when it comes to sound gear, but end of the day, just give me a black molded plastic for all I care and let me buy a good form-fitting carrying case separately if I’m gonna do mobile recording, ya know.?. 🤷🏼♂️
It is brilliant how far interfaces have come. I followed Apogee from the high end sector for many years. Allot of my friends use Apogee as their reference. I noticed that in this demo IOS and or Apple devices are used here. Do we have compatibility with the Android and Windows side? I am most interested in this Interface to up my game here. Love the software here too. I am using a GAP 73 and a Shure SM7B and need an interface with excellence that has the portability and robustness needed for my professional office travel for Webex and Zoom conference collaboration. I am also the point on my team though many are gifted here as well and I make the team conscious that bad audio is a choice, not a condition and it is easier to get right if you want. Mitch as always you are the professional I listen too and appreciate you always being on point and center. You and everyone at Sweetwater Sound rock. Explains why I have been a customer since the 90s. Right on! And thanks for the heads up on this very cool product.
Thank you for the extra effort with the iPad Demo
Thank You Mitch (!) Terrific review/demo of this new interface... time for me to upgrade my VO equipment. APOGEE: bring out other colors, though, please.
If latency and converters are excellent and I can use it without software, I don't care about the colour 🙂
Very cool presentation, very cool device! Too late for me as I have purchased the Antelope ZenQ 4 months ago. Boom wasn‘t available then, it would have been ok for my needs!
Hello I know it's about a year late but please can you brief me about the performance of the zen q over the years? I'm really considering getting one
Hello. Thanks for your answer! Meanwhile there‘s the Zen Quadro available. My ZenQ (Thunderbold version) is a beast of an Audio Interface although it was quite difficult to get it run at the beginning. Antelope is famous for high end interfaces and if I hadn‘t got the ZenQ I‘d buy the Quadro.
And meanwhile I have the Boom too, which was was available much cheaper after I had already purchased it. But I don’t use it often, only for mobile purposes. There are too few LEDs in my opinion.
@@vewilli wow, that's great. Do you experience software glitches or any form of interruption when you are working with the Zen q? I onced wanted to get the BOOM too, but some online reviews said that the headphone out makes hissing noise, do you experience that with your BOOM? And considering that you can't use monitor and headphone at the same time I just gave up...
Can‘t remember having heard hisses. Will listen to that next time I use it, which might be in quite a while!
Thank you 💜 we just got one 🦄
BUT what does it sound like? Are the converters as good as the Duet line - surely this is what a sound interface is ALL about?
I just got the unit great sound for an awesome price the only quirk of the unit is that you always need to unplug the headphones to use the monitors out which is a bit weird because the apogee software gives you the control for both volumes. Wouldn't be simple to have at least a switch in the software? I don't get this ;(
Yeah I am sending it back because of this limitation. Why???
how does it compare to the duets in terms of sound quality?
Good question, because in Europe it costs more than a used Duet 2.
@@followyourpassion8378 I just bought it... i had the duet 1... its very hard to tell if theres any difference... I think its similar preamps and converters... the only reason its cheaper than the duet 3... its just has less inputs
@@SalsaBailaProductions Are you liking the Boom so far? Is the latency alright?
@@followyourpassion8378 all good
Looks good and surely sounds good but surely they could have picked a less naff name.
too bad they didnt add a reverb/delay to the channel strip, and a midi in/out like some of the other 2/2 interfaces
Absolutely hilarious decisions 1) Purple. 2) only one combo jack. 3) Looks like cheap toy binoculars. 4) HP out on the rear. 5) HP out cuts off the main outs while HP are plugged in. Boy even if this thing sound like gold it wouldn’t be enough to compensate for this madness lol. 😅
Thanks Mitch! With this sound card is it possible to do live streaming to give guitar lessons on Skype or Zoom or Meet? Is there software for all of this included? I want to use my iPadpro 2021...
Everything should be possible, I would expect High-Res audio output. On your Mac select Boom as default audio output and ready to go.
My Focusrite 2nd gen 2i4 has just bit the dust and im looking at upgrading..... They no longer make the 2i4 so I'm considering my other options... The purple is cute, but I feel like the missing 2nd xlr port, higher pricepoint, inconvenient headphone jack placement and just overall lack of features is kinda just pushing me to get another focusrite instead. Why should I buy the BOOM when im familiar with Focusrite and it has more features for a lower price?
I have a 2020 USB-C iPad Pro that it did not work with. I tried it with my wife’s 2021 M1 thunderbolt USB-C iPad Pro and it worked. Should it have worked with both or just the thunderbolt?
Sweet
So, I’m a pc gamer. Not a streamer though. Can I use a standard mic input from a gaming headset and still monitor latency free? And if I want to upgrade headphones later and use a dac/amp.. can I use that with the Boom, and still get latency free monitoring?? Thanks.
INSTEAD OF THE CHANNEL STRIP I WISH THEY HAVE ADDED REVERB JUST FOR MONITORING.
Does this have the same or similar converters like the element series ?
Is it me or is the screen capture really low quality?
Since it works for iPad. Does it work for iPhone?
Hi Solrac M7, great question. Yes, it is iOS compatible, so it will work for iPhone, as well. You will probably need the iPhone Camera adapter, though:
www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LightCamera--apple-lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter
And since it is bus powered, you will also need a powered USB hub to power the interface.
If you would like to dig in more, give me a ring!

Why should i get this instead of a Focusrite?
Because Mitch Said So!
can I use powerbank for a record process?
Hello - this interface needs to be connected to a computer or iOS device via USB in order to function, so it could not be used with just a power bank. If you are looking for a standalone recorder give us a call and we can help you find the best one for your needs. Thanks!

Is it possible to switch from line to inst or mic on the Apogee Boom unit (not the software)?
Hey there! You will have to change the input from mic/line within the BOOM software, there aren’t any actual switching controls on the physical unit itself.
I hope this helps!

@@sweetwater Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to answer. Does the BOOM then at least save the configuration, so you don't need the BOOM control app the next time you intend to use it in the same way?
@@followyourpassion8378 Yes, the BOOM will save your last configuration. You’ll have a button that you can select to save your current settings for the next time you use it.
I hope this helps!

Mitch can sell me a car with no tires
It is a failure for Apogee designer’s team. First seperate volume knob for headphones and main out not exist. Also, you can not see gain level on the unit, hardware is poorly designed and that purple piece is a joke, it is basically a plastic unit, no midi port, and the volume knob looks terrible. Buy a second hand Duet 2 ver.2 with ios, mac and pc, or used RME babyface gen1, It will knock your socks of Booooommm.
Why are people still making non-32bit interfaces in 2022? Silicon and software is cheap, discreet component assembly and superfluous injection molds for wantless knobs are not cheap. Strange decisions.
Because 32bit recording is not even a thing that exist. 32bit is a floating point in digital audio for processing that gets converted to 24bit is the bit rate. But no true converter truly operates at 24bits nor a human could with stand a Dynamic range of 144db as instant hearing loss with in seconds.
@@eman0828 shut up
I loved this review until Julian Krause dropped his.
Yes, JKs review was a bit demystifying. However, I just received a Motu M4, which is highly praised and so far I am not loving what I am hearing over headphones playing back commercial music (AKG Q701). Yet have to record. My Apogee Quartet sounded fine. So, what do these 3rd hand tests mean anyway?
All the major players who only used to cater to the pro market are doing low-price-point interfaces for the burgeoning hobbyist market. SSL, Neve, Apollo UAD . . . lotsa kids living in mom's basement with some pandemic dollars to spend.
except that the Neve 88M still costs $1300, which is already the budget for an entire home studio.
Which is not a bad thing businesses gotta business
@@jacksp8de well they are late to the party and can not pull the wool over peoples eyes any longer. They either create low priced options or go out of business. Focusrite have been doing this for years and have literally cornered the market. They also have very good upgrade paths if you want. Clarett and then Red. They are a smart company and others are finally learning that they can no longer be elitist snobs.
@@kehindea I don’t think they were pulling wool over anyones eyes, their quality is top notch. I like that they are a smaller family type company. They are not a giant corporate machine
