    Have you put any thought into the re-inversion of Shrek II, where the margin becomes the center (Shrek becoming prince) and the center becoming the margin (Fairy Godmother becoming the outcast villain)? It seems like there might be something great there to do with the swinging pendulum.

      Vince McCoige this video help put into words that feeling I got when I saw the last Shrek movie (4), where Shrek and his group of misfits have become the stagnant community center, and the disruption comes from the margin; Rumpelstiltskin...a conman who lived in a trailer park turned homeless...

    Loved the video Jonathan. I'd love to see you expand on the pendulum swinging between the center and the fringe and how this connects to what we're seeing in modern society. It seems to me that in our society the former fringe has become the center and we are experiencing the pendulum switch back to the "normal" state.

    • @IAmGameAddicted
      @IAmGameAddicted 6 лет назад

      History repeats, it goes back and forth between two extremes. Right now the pendulum is swinging towards the right instead of the left ( in our society, but it has also happened in countless others).

    Thanks Jonathan. Very interesting. I will need to watch this a few times. I feel you have very important information to share, but am not yet sure how to comprehend it... The concepts seem strange, yet familiar (I guess it has something to with the collective unconscious, or me not being a student of art). Questions which spring to mind are, where did you learn this? and do the editors of movies understand what they are writing themselves?

    • @DrLimbic
      @DrLimbic 6 лет назад

      The question not being directed at me and albeit too late but the answer is yes. Thematic and stylistic choices of professional writers are made early in plot development as a layer of meaning and help guide the events of the plot points: those that intellectually do not fit within the metanarrative are discarded.

    This relation between the peripheral and the central is frequently shown in space shows. While the belters are being assaulted, excluded, and became the other, the ones in the center are busy being wealthy and healthy

    It reminds me of how there was always an area outside the camp for the children of Israel. There, they would send the lepers and those unclean, and also went to the bathroom there.
    But also, the tabernacle was pitched far outside the camp (Exodus 33:7). Almost far deep into chaos. Christ suffered on the Cross outside Jerusalem. The Orthodox Study Bible says that everyone who sought the Lord went outside the camp, and those who wish to find Him must leave the earthly Jerusalem to find Him in the heavenly Jerusalem. But is there an element of the Marginal here, and what does it mean?

    The Second Coming
    Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.
    Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
    The darkness drops again; but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

    You could make the same comparison using Tyrion Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones. Such a mismatched character who identifies strongly as a dwarf but he so desperately wants to be tall, it is even hinted at that he’s fallen in love with a girl of normal size. He has the split between green and black eyes, and a mix of pale blond and black hair kind of like The Master and Margarita.

      My thought is that as we are only able to grasp a minuscule amount of a greater knowledge due to our inability to see things from all perspectives and living within an biased ego religion its self becomes a mine field.
      If the ego is deconstructed the bias can be removed from the equation, the more people understand the fallacy of the ego construct the larger the perspective of the greater knowledge.

    In a sense the result of the excesses of the left and right hand leads to our attachment to the pendulum and so we face the consquences, therefore given that our western society looks to be firmly attached to the pendulum the goal should be not to stop the pendulum directly (if thats even possible) but instead to detach society from it.

To begin your study of the life of Muad'Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. I have to admit that Shrek left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. While there are huge dangers to celebrating physical beauty, as we can see in our society today, it seemed like the Shrek was on the verge of celebrating physical ugliness as a positive good in itself. We can see something similar in the fat acceptance movement. While there are real evils to be fought in our society's obsession with youth and physical appearance, the fat acceptance people seems intent on voiding the very distinction between the beautiful and the ugly, and to pathologize all attempts to possess or achieve the former. That seems to me a profoundly evil thing to do.

When you tell kids it’s alright to be massively overweight, without telling them it can shorten their life and lower the quality of life they do have, it’s pretty evil. Yes, kids should be happy with who they are, but not at the detriment to their health.

    The movie plot is as bizarre as the explanation of its symbolism. Perhaps they are working from the same ‘script’?

    Is this movie responding to a disenchanted Protestantism? There are no mysteries, all spiritual elements have been arrested, tries to explain all, etc. to make up for its own lacking.

    The sin of pride,
    is the first sin, before the margin devours the centre.
    Order of the centre must allow some room on the margin for gargoyles and monsters, or it will be devoured by the margin.
