When i saw this in my recommended, the pic was a guy with a strat and i was like"who the hell puts the het set in a fricken strat"!!
Jack Boulter I have a metal sounding strat, there isn't much sound difference between an ltd or schecter or ibanez or strat if you have the same pickups
i get a decently similar sound even with single coils on my strat with the right amp
The tone you'll get will be as brown as some pure EVH morning poop 8-O
I do
Jack Boulter I was thinking the same thing!!!
Rob Chapman playing metallica on a ESP, I can die happy now
Jermaine Riley simpleton.
... Incorrectly
But the pinch harmonics though.. Not very Hetfield
The signature EMG James Hetfield pick-ups sound much better!
You know the clean channel is good when EMGs can't break it up.
No kt doesen't it just means its focusing on a different range of mids
I can't believe people still judge Rob from an almost 3 year old video. Have people not watched some of his more recent stuff?
Well said brother
I like how there's actually a difference
The thing people might do wrong, is to scoop the mids. The Het Set has a lot of mid range actually.
Holy shit, Rob with no hair! haha
+Ab Absurdo ikr? i thought the same thing! xD
+Ab Absurdo
He looks so strange....
Sounded so much better with the Hetfield pickups.
I have the Het Set in my '85 Mako TX-2 with an 18 volt mod, oh dear Lord do they sound fantastic! The clean tones are so natural sounding if someone heard it and didn't know I was playing a solid body, they would have though I was playing an acoustic. Under distortion, the 18 volt mod brings out more of the mid tones that 9 volts would have missed. Honestly, the 18 volt mod brings out the punchiness and clarity of a passive pickup, just like what James Hetfield wanted. The wall of sound from an active with the punch and clarity of a passive. Do the 18 volt on the Het Set and you will get just that.
I'd buy these but I'm wary of becoming a table
Nobody wants to become a table.
lol!!!
the table is unescapeble ! beware mortals ^^
right now the snakebyte DOES have the 'het' set in it when you buy a new one
Oh, wow, I was debating between both of these sets, and I am glad I watched this because I was leaning towards the 81 60 set, but I actually like my stock pickups better than the 81 60's, but those hets sound amazing. Love it.
+Layne White Follow up on this comment, I dropped the Het Set in my Les Paul, and it was the greatest thing I have ever done to my tone. Had them for about a year now, and I absolutely love them.
10/10 Next guitar will have these in them.
+Layne White I ordered my snakebite and has a Gibson LPJ. Bought some 81/60s to replace the 498/490. Hope I'm not making a mistake but sounds like you did good with the het set on the les Paul so that's promising!
If you're talking about using the Het Set, it's probably some of the most versatile set of pickups I've tried. Can have some great distorted tones, but also amazing cleans.
Don't know if Rob was just off, but holy crap even just a couple years of difference and his playing is so tight and clean and just straight phenomenal...
Stop making videos! I haven't enough cash!!
+Daniel Franks Ha-ha-ha.
Used the Het-Set for about 3 years now. Definitely love them for their dynamic range for both metal, blues, soft rock, and (yes) even country (with the right amp). They have the feel of a hotter version of Gibson '59 PAF (in my opinion) - so they make a great alternative if you are looking to keep that Gibson tone while adding a bit of umph.
The after-market set sounds more brutal to my yurrs. Like, they're higher-output? I wouldn't imagine that, but could be.
Well, I got the HT-5RH head today, and went for a HTV-112 cab. This thing is freakin' insane. Loads of gain, loads of volume, and so crisp and articulate.
This is the first video where I'd ever seen a Blackstar amp. Two weeks later, I have a brand new Blackstar setup. Thanks Chappers, it's all due to you.
I have a set of these in my 1985 Explorer. They sound like I bought new wood for the guitar. Woke it up in ways I didn't imagine. This is coming from a confirmed DiMarzio guy as well. Take what you will from it. Best 200.00 plus I ever spent on anything.
EMGs and DiMarzios, to me, go together like peas and carrots as some might say haha. Overlaying the same riffs with the different sounds is just beautiful.
I bought a set of these, a set of Blackouts ABH-1, and I already own an 81/85 set. Along with a couple of drummers and another guitar player, we did a head to head comparison. We all liked the Blackouts more than the 81/85, but the Het Set was thought to be better than both. The Hets feel better and sound better overall. We came to the same conclusion as these guys. I can't say any of them are bad pups, but the Hets are like a combo of the best parts of passive and active. Very versatile.
The "Hets' have more crunch but a lot more fuzzy
The response of the Het set is more "passive", that's why you hear more fizz on them
. Although those blackstars are awfully fuzzy
I like the Het Set. I feel they're exactly what they advertize. They're warmer and fuller like a passive pickup but have the aggressiveness and treble of an active pickup.
The Het-set sound 'DiMarzio-like'.
Wow, the Het Set sounds a lot clearer and brighter, kind of like the perfect blend between a Duncan Distortion/Jazz and an EMG 81/60. I must have them
The Hets definitely have a much sharper tone to them. More attack.
the signature pickups really blew my mind. best active pickups they just sound so much fuller and they ad a nice warm undertone. (my knowledge about this particular part of a guitar is somewhat limited i might add)
The old set sounds even more like metallica to me.
SCM the clean tone and the solo sounded better with the old EMG pickups
@@toelife2112 I felt the same
Yes you can. All Emg's use the same 3 cable quick connect hookup so switching between all Emg models is a snap! You can also throw in Seymour Duncan Blackouts and use the same quick connect.
well, youd have to hear it in person to really hear the great sound, people with totally aggressive comments towards the pickups have shitty headphones probably.
It's not the pickups that are fuzzy, it's the amp. I also own a Snakebyte with EMG JH's and they sound crystal clear. The distortion tone is tight, loud, and surprisingly full. Not ice-picky or flat like 81/60's. The dynamics of the pickups are beautiful and they're very versatile for EMG's. Overall great pickups and worth the money.
And now with the snakebyte and the hetset unless james hetfield does crazy mad science with his guitars then you have the same guitar and stuff he uses live
Bought these pups like a week or so ago from Andertons... and I can honestly say that they kick 81/85s ass by far. Put them in my Schecter Damien Elite 6 and now that guitar just roars! Recomended as an upgrade for 81/85 or 81/60 combo.
the captain looks the same now but rob fucking looks difrent
He looks a lot better I'm happy for him
Might be getting these for my birthday, can't wait!
Ryan Thistle hope you enjoy them, man...I'm sure you won't be disappointed unless your sound is just completely different.
people who dis the lads on the video and their guitar playing should SHUT UP. It's just a litl helpful video to demonstrate a set of pick ups for whoever who cares.
Learn some respect and get a life.
Aside from that I've nothing to say about this product or video. just watching as part of a never satisfied internet addiction. (My turn to 'get a life')
pretty good review, at first i wasn't expecting much, but you made a pretty good one, i noticed the difference in sound just like you decribed it, thanks. Keep those reviews coming! :)
Creeping death sounded weird out of that amp
that amp sounds like they have a wah on
Probably just a tad too much treble, or maybe changing the ISF to the more "British" sounding side could help
+Gunslinger15 Oversaturation is the word
+Gunslinger15 Because he played pinch harmonics on the chord. It's a situational thing for me. I do it now and then, but like Rob did it here, is way too much.
Dead on, it sounds awful. These guys need to learn how to tune an amplifier and give it the appropriate settings.
thank you so much for this vid. you can really hear the difference between a regular emg 81 85 and the het set..
That snakebyte looks like a Jackson Kelly
RG1570 YGO Snakebyte has better cuts tho
This is the best sounding setup I have ever heard
AGGHHHH Im so nervous right now. I decided, quite firmly, to take my simple single-coil Yamaha guitar and toss in a pair of EMG 81 & 60 's. But the store didnt have em in stock, but did have these EMG Hets and were 20% off, so I bought them even though I had never heard them before. I don't know if Im happy now. Better cleans, better solos, worse "heavy riffing"... ahhhh *sigh*... so nervous. Im broke so I spent money I probably shouldn't have on these.
Wile E. Coyote Why didn't you just return them and get the ones you wanted? If it's too late to do so (and still ask, even if it is outside the store's return policy, the worst that could happen is they say no), you could probably find someone who would be willing to do an even trade, your Het Set for their 81/60 set.
***** the shop was bs, so I chocked it up to a learning thing. But I figure its a decent enough setup to work with and build some skill. Once Im decent I might look at the 81/60 setup, or more likely just splurge on a nice Ibanez with em and do something weird with this setup, like make it a 5 way or whatever. But I got a ways to go. One thing I learned is miney lost you forget about, so maube 2 years from now Ill buy the 8160 setup if Im really not satisfied with the hets. Good amp before all of that tho. Thanks for the swap idea, ill keep it in mind.
Wile E. Coyote hey. Did you try it out yet? I want to know how you felt when you first tried the hets
Ishmam Ahmed To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed. I think the 81/60 setup would be preferable for "classic" metal. That said, my amp is a pos.
Wile E. Coyote so i have an ec 1000 ..should i stick to the 81/60 setup over the hets?
I just bought the PU's and put them into a ESP LTD EC-401 OW. It sounds like a new guitar now. EMG has done a great job with this Set. If you like a passive feel with positive features of active PU's then the HET-SET is the right thing.
I personally don't see the point of 'signature' pick ups as overall sound is largely determined by the guitar, amp and tone from the fingers. Don't think for a minute you'll sound like Hetfield if you buy these pick ups. There's so much more to it than that.
Agree. James has used 81 & 60 for his entire career up until he got his signature pick ups recently, which means 81 & 60 still can bring kick ass hetfield's sound of 80's and 90's.
They are amazing pick ups dude, regardless of who's name is on them
Steven Lopez Don't doubt it, I have an 81 and an 85 on one of my guitars and they are cool
... Trust me, the jhset is amazing
Small Clone it was a duncan invader
If you ever revisit these pickups. I'd love to hear the behavior when the volume is rolled off. Giving the preamp more air to breath. I've learnd these pickups (as in EMG active pickups not the Hetfields, as I have not had the chance to hear them) hide an immense range of tones. Tones usually not all available in one set of pickups...
that blackstar needs less gain to sound more tight. sounds bad. especially on creeping death
Infinity I have this amp too... The different between active and passive pickups is huge! Active pickups pushes the amp more in the front.. so you have much more compressed sounds. With passive Pickups, it feels like heaven dude... No actives for this amp is the real deal in my opinion.
I'm picking up this head this week, couldn't be more excited.
First pickups sound better/less fuzzy!
You guys are smoking crack. I have these and there is no "fuz" at all, lol
The fuzz might be coming from the recording because the het set are louder
CaribSurfKing1 what?!?! The first ones were MORE fuzzy..use your ears bro. And before you come at me, I'm a sound engineer.
CaribSurfKing1 probably the amp. Black stars don’t really have the best distortion sounds around. Also Metallica is more of a Mesa/Boogie kinda sound.
@HeavyMetalSonicRM - Man your the best rythmn player I have seen!
I came here to see a maple fretboard Strat rocking a EMG. Was disappointed.
Why a strat....... Strats don't deserve emgs ... It's like putting a boobjob on a grandma
Isaiah Gray well, life is full of disappointments...get used to it. Lol
Jose santi Strats sound outstanding with Emgs! What are you on about?
After a mother listen, with better earphones, I can definitely tell a huge difference, I actually like them more than the first listen. Pretty fkn groovy pickup's!!
I couldn't hear much difference between the two sets....
absolutely, not in this video. but you should really check them out dude! I bought them, from this moment on... my favourite active pickup set ever. give em a chance :)
2:05 is so funny when Captain Lee makes that sound!
guitar and pickups are awesome!!!!
you can put those pickups in any guitar, and they'd sound identical through the same amp and player. Literally the sound of a guitar is from it's pickup and the person playing it. you could stick that 81 or the het set bridge pickup in a guitar that cost 99 pounds and there's be zero difference. don't let people fool you into thinking "Tone Woods" (the only part of the guitar they can ramp the price up to huge amounts with, funny how rarer and more expensive woods with better patterning magically sound better than cheaper more widely found woods hm? God must be a guitarist). Buy a guitar you like the shape/colour and feel of, then put your EMGs or Blackouts or whatever in it, and have the SAME guitar sound wise as your favorite player who has that SAME pickup in hes 400k worth of a guitar. Believe me, i know.
Only for actives though.
Abi Camoro
Nope. Put any pickup in a Tennis Racket, Then put it in a 10 grand guitar, and providing you could use the same strings and the same player, the tennis racket and the 10k guitar would be identical. Tone wood is myth and sales hype, only people who can profit off of it's placebo push it. I mean ffs, Fender just made a guitar out of Cardboard and it sounded identical to an American Standard as it had an identical pickup in it and it didn't even weight 2lbs. Grow up, realize you're being exploited. Pick a pickup you like the sound of, pick a guitar you think is ;pretty and feels nice in your hands with a neck you find comfortable, and stick with it. doesn't matter if it's 100 dollrs, or 50k.
+Anthony Quigley You are really really misinformed mate.
*****
You have alot to say. Prove it. Do you have a really nice guitar and a really shitty one? get the shitty one (make sure it's set up right), less than 100 bucks ok. Record yourself playing a clean riff for 1 min and a distorted riff for 1 min (2 riffs you KNOW you can nail almost identically every time). Then take the pickup you used out of that piece of shit guitar, and stick it in the same posoition in your expensive guitar. Use the same brand/guage strings and play the same 2 licks clean and distorted, same setup, pedals, amp, voloume and record those aswell. Then listen one after the other clean fter clean, distoreted after distored... you won't hear the slightest bit of difference dude, I'm sorry. But if you think the fact that your neck is made out of Maple, and the skunk stripe is made out of toothepaste and the toothpaste is adding a cool minty sound to the guitar you're just... ugh.
I actually did a test before, i'll find the vid and up;load it. 4 completely different guitars, all with an EMG81 in the bridge position. Ibanez, 2 ESP's and a shitty Zakk wyle thing. I recorded myself on camera playing one of them (on video) and then i recorded myself playing the same licks on the other 3. I posted it and asked people which sounded better, they were all going between the 2 ESP's "the explorer sounds kind of richer, probably due to the bulk of the explorer's body" or "The KH2 has less meat but more crunch. When really i just repeated the recording of the Zakk Wylde one 4 times over the 4 video's of the 4 different guitars, and literally everyone said they were all different, when it was just the same guitar sound pasted 4 times. Placebo dude... People hear and see what they wanna see.
Dont you think it's funny how the more rare and expensive a piece of wood is in a guitar.. the better it sounds! wow, Guitar companies are so lucky hm! it's like ... God wanted guitar manufacturers to make lots of money r something!. Grow up.
+Tour of Rooms Anthony is right dont let that cognitive dissonance keep you from accepting the truth. you would not pass a blind test on which guitars wood is which if your life depended on it.
identical guitars made with different woods and the pickups hardware and pots switched to the new ones, you would fail lol even if they claimed the woods were different but were all cheap basswood you would think you hear a difference, just like idiots who think tap water taste different if given a fancy name, expensive price, and put in a nice bottle..
As a personal user of these pickups: they're great! I swapped my 81/60's in my Explorer for these. The tone difference is phenomenal.
Do how to sound like dave mustaine from Megadeth
Glen Curtin there's always at least 1.
Sound like Mustaine? "Boo boo everyone hates me because I'm ginger and whiney." Close enough?
I have the Het Set in my LTD, and i love them. I don't like the other EMGs, I like passive pickups but i gave these a try and i really like them. I have a few covers on my channel
Both sounded horrible, probably because of that amp. Such a nasal tone, it's like you left a wah-wah pedal on.
That's EMGs for you. Some don't like that aspect of them. Whenever I record on my Boss GT-10 I hear that distinctively in my EMG-equipped guitar. People say something similar about the DiMarzio Tone Zone which I have too, but frankly the EMGs exhibit it 10 times more. I think it can be used as a tool... although yeah I think the Blackstar brings it out a little too much. Not every amp works with these so well, and certainly not every tuning, riff, or playing style does either. They have a place on my palette for recording, though (no i don't use a GT-10 for actual recording... just sending ideas to band members. I ain't crazy)
TheMetalHeaD256 Well, I have an ESP LTD m401 with EMG81's on it, and it sounds good (with my Laney VH100R). I also have an Ibanez with DiMarzio/IBZ pickups. Sounds quite similar to the EMG's when distorted, but very different when clean.
I'm dead sure it's the amp in this video that makes it sound so bad. Not saying it couldn't be fixed, though.
I agree, a lot of it is the amp. It kind of accentuates the wrong parts of these pickups. And yeah i've noticed that myself, DiMarzio and EMG sound decently similar distorted through my JVM too. In fact I think they go great together in recordings.
As you said, it wasn't the EMG's, it was the amp. Blackstars are known for having a horrible and fizzy distortion. I have EMGs 81/60A in my Gibsons and through my Mark IV they sound awesome.
I know what you mean
I love how they act like they are so dynamic and then he rolls down the volume and it doesn't clean up as much as you would see on a passive.
I thought the dude was pretty good.
sounds about right. i've got 2 Ibanez's, one with DiMarzios and one with EMGs. the DiMarzio's under a lot of gain did NOT respond very well to changes with the volume knob... well, at least not as well as the EMGs did. that's even with 500k pots. the EMGs have a VERY nice range of tones by rolling off the knobs. the DiMarzios lose some treble, then stay about the same, then all of a sudden cut out as you roll the knob. the EMGs have a consistent change. you're right, it's something to test.
I'd rather have a Strat any day.
Sounds soulless, I get better sound from My mim strat but that's just My opinion.
I have nothing against Emg's as I do use a passive one in the mid position of My mim and it does sound clean for some strumming, picking and blues lead
If you buy a snakebyte with emgs (het set or not) you certainly won't play blues or much clean stuff. It's a set up voted for thrash, so talking about preferring a strat is pointless
I prefer humbuckers over single pickups, but I dont like actives :D
This pickup is not for your clean strat crap
I can notice a significant difference in sound. Those signature pickups sound better, although the stock ones are great too.
Totally butchered Through The Never
Was he trying to cover it?
"Was he trying to cover it?"
Evidently so, isn't that obvious?
Not much of a metal player lol
I really dig the Het Set because they have more high end and are WAY more characteristic than regular EMG sets. And they sound fuckin' tasty for shredding.
Learn how to play the damn guitar. Great vid man (sorry, im bipolar) don't know how to feel.
But please! Chappers is an awsome guitar player. Go watch his video "how to judge other guitar players", revaluate your life, and have a nice day!
Teodor Molander well, the guy is right! Chappers can surely play, but in this case all riffs are badly picked and sound sloppy.
Maybe he's a great lead player and not as great in rhythm stuff...
Those pickups, and that tone rocks.
passive picks are far better.
not for metallica wtf
+Infinity metallica them sell out has beens active pickups always no matter what still runs hot.
so there still crap in my thoughts unless you only want to sound like metallica.
Michael Barron reason why you think they suck is because not alot of people use it right. its always the same shitty scooped tone with a metal zone in front
+Infinity just cuase alot of people use them dont mean there good.
but there are alot of people who dont like them because they are hot and they rather run passive becuase of them being versatile and they sound better.
but as i said if you like them cool but remember not everyone does.
but me i want more then hearing crap and a compressed sound and being limited.
now stay to what you like as everyone else does and keep your thoughts to you cuase i dont care to know what your metallica fanboy self thinks.
cheers
Michael Barron thats not what i meant, alot of people USE emgs wrong
This video is the reason I'll be purchasing a Blackstar HT-5R next month.
It's not always about sounding like the person playing, more just whether or not the pickups are any good. These ones are surprisingly good, especially compared to other artist pickups.

they are more crisp. a lot less low end, and very very bright. very clear tone, easily discernible what is played and yet still heavily distorted. i like them. since it's a "combination of a passive and an active pickup", those are the het's words, they sound less powerful on the pinch harmonics. all in all some damn good pickups. at least in my opinion.
HUGE difference! Wow..his pickups make a HELL of a lot of difference to the sound..
Yes, you can. I have a guitar set up for passive pickups when I bought my HET set. One of my local guitar shops said that it would cost me 700 bucks to modify it appropriately (they were idiots). The other guitar shop charged me 40 bucks and was done in an hour. Basically, you just need extra space to put a 9 volt battery next to your guitar's electronics. Just take it to a guitar shop.
You guys are the funniest and rockinest out there.
ESP Snakebyte + EMG James Hetfield signature +Rob's playing is a great combination........
the signature set is AMAZING !!! no compersion to the 81/85 . As I buit them in, I was blown away. First I forgot to put in the battery and wondered why they are so weak... but than... wow! So mighty try bridge, neck, try both !!! try different genres and styles, play around with volume and tone ! I'm still amazed! best active pickups I played so far.
Yeah thats about right, sometimes they'll run the guitar through whatever amps into a single stack or just the one cab, mic that up and run that through all the processing and into the arrays, so the player has a extra reference point and can crank up some feedback live
The Het Set definitely has a tighter, more compressed sound to it, which I'm a fan of. I still think they'd sound even better with a little bit of a comp pedal or OD pedal (just to compress it a little bit more), but they're pretty good pickups.
Definitely a tone difference, but for me ,my humble opinion, the first pair were the best for old school mattalica ! Thanks guy's for the video!!
You truly just made me lol. Thank you for brightening my day.
Wow, I can clearly hear how much crunchier the mids get yer how the low-end and high-end are still just as fat and juicy. I may actually look into these pick-ups for my les-Paul and Yes, I can also honestly say BlackStar are my favorite amps ever!
nice to see you guys have fun and a personality. nice amp...subscribed
as I can see, neck humbucker is in parallel connection, and bridge humbucker is active serial connection. and they resistance is above 17K. Are simple as that!
@sonicalsonics got to remember though, while pickups contribute. the majority of sound will come from the amplifier. if this isn't the amp he uses, with the same settings, of course it's going to sound different.
It's so good to hear these riffs all in once :')
pick attack is definately more in your face with papa-Het's pick ups!! diggin it
All Comparisons!

EMTY for sure!!!! Best pickups for metal! Was considering buyin gthe blackout 7's and I was about 2 clicks away when i found seymour duncan had literally just annouced the release of EMTY 7 string version! Arrive this week SO EXCITED!! SEYMOUR DUNCAN FTW!!!
hetfields set sound amazing
The "Het Set" was much fuller, with a tighter bottom end (just slightly) and had a tad more oomph! to them. It wasn't as dramatic as I thought the difference would be. Here is the thing about EMG actives (or any actives) they sound the exact same no matter what guitar they're in. With passive, the wood will heavily influence the tone of the guitar. Not with actives. You could put them in a guitar made of plywood, and you'll get the same sound as mahogany, or maple, or plastic, or glass, or ...
Yes i also think they could use more bass, but that is why they probably sound tight in the lower end, which is important to metal players
so sick !!! love the sound !
I've got myself a pair of the Het Set EMGs
threw them on my Gibson Gothic V.
Sounds good, looks good.
Great pickups, they clean up very nicely too! :D And superior playing as always Rob!
Also, I did a blind test between Blackouts and the Het Set. The Het Set was deemed the better sounding pickup overall, but the Blackouts bridge was much hotter and aggressive. I really like them both, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the Het Set.
The hetfield pickups sound so much better!! What have you guys got your distortion set to?
Wow. I knew they'd sound different, but I didn't expect this! The improvement is remarkable! I will have to give these another look. I have an Explorer that would be perfect for these. Now I just need to find $300...
I really like the original EMG 81/85 combo. The EMG 60 is too dark and thick for my taste. But overall actives are very nice and really make metal riffs come alive. The Het Set are just spectacular. Do yourself a favor and don't judge from this video, RUclips audio is very compressed and you can't really hear the dynamics of the p/u's. The best hybrid yet, IMHO. The Gus G Blackouts are right there too. It's like having a preamp right in your guitar. Going into a tube amp is the only way to go!
My dream pickups set is: EMG 81 (bridge) + EMG 89 (neck). Split coils offers incredible versatility!
