    Apparently they are called Retaining rings instead of snap rings. They do make a tool for external retaining rings. But what about internal retaining rings? I have a couple inside the final drive, that need to come out to remove the bearing races.

    • @d6joe
      @d6joe Год назад +4

      Internal can be a real bear. The “wedge a screwdriver” method will eventually get them, but a 3rd hand is sometimes needed.

    In a pinch you can use 2 flat blade screwdrivers. Insert both tips in the gap side by side, touching, then lever the screwdriver handles together, pivoting the tips apart. You have to play with length of shafts, thicknesses, etc. but as I do most of my mechanical work on evenings and weekends, necessity is the mother of invention.

    First, DO NOT replace the lock ring with a snap ring. (the one with the holes to release) The width of the lock ring is there as a spacer as well as a keeper. Get the BEST lock ring pliers you can afford. (It makes a DIFFERENCE!) Buy (If possible) new lock rings because the sharpness of the point will make it easier to install. (Will grab lock ring pliers better)
    This is first hand experience. Older Jeep transmission disassembly. Tried for hours and multiple times. A good friend of mine (May he rest in peace) drove by and checked out what I was doing. He immediately went to his house and brought a Snap-On snap ring plier and I took it off in two tries! Yes, I am a believer!! Great video!

Some have a way to attach a slide hammer to them to remove the axle without removing the spring lock. You have to jerk them out and hammer them in. The spring is designed to collapse just enough to let it past through

    You should always put your puller from one support to the other. the way you did your 2nd one not your first and third one. You will eventually bend your threaded rod if you don't. Always a good idea to put a rag over the top of the bearing until you get it to move. That way if it breaks pieces wont fly and hit you. Once it moves you can remove the rag so you can see

    Duck bill pliers for those constant area external rings. Internal constant area snap rings you use a hook tool or screw driver to get under and work them out. Snap rings should be replaced. The can be fatigued during removal and become costly problem. They use constant area snap rings to proved better uniformed thrust surface, the other type has tendency to brake the tab when alternating thrust loads happen which causes problem.

    Replace them all with the new style retaining rings. On the round ring you might have to use 2 rings and that's alright if there is room, if not then just re-use the old ones. The rings strength is in the stopping force of the ring in the groove. Good video, you explained the trouble of working on old equipment. Check on-line for old iron support groups, they are there. Illinois and Iowa have lots of tractor shows. West of Springfield there were several Alis Chalmers Dealerships. There should be someone rebuilding these.
