  • The first of my reviews of the 60th anniversary specials for Doctor Who, the star beast meaning to be a new jumping on point for the show while also continuing and trying to salvage what damage previous stories had done while also continuing a story that ended 15 years ago. Did it manage to succeed at all this? Welllllll....

Was part way through your Wild Blue Yonder review before coming to this one, I am so excited for the upcoming series and was so happy that all these specials were sooo good, although I disagree with your takes on some of the past seasons, it's exciting that so many people are so hyped for this show again

Kinda surreal to watch you do a video about a *new* RTD episode. All these years of Richie Reviews complaining about how Doctor Who isn't the same without Russell has lead to this.

It's weird to think, the whole time I complained about the show not being the same without him, I never would've thought he would come back and come back with such a mid story.

Give us 2 of the best actors to play The Doctor ever and constantly give them shit material, regularly ruin his characters for the sake of awful plot, regularly destory amazing concepts due to his own incompetance etc etc.

Insulting Moffat in a RTD review....makes no sense. You do know who wrote this episode yes? It was RTD not Moffat. You don't have to remind everyone you HATE Moffat every time you say a negative towards a RTD episode. Just saying

Readers who didn’t watch the video yet
*** SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT SWEETIES***
I wrote an essay about like one part of the whole video, but it got me thinking!!! Wasn’t looking to write comment essays on YT today, or generally lol.
Okay so I’ve disagreed with some things because it just comes down to personal opinion. Which is cool. I always liked the way Clara’s bisexuality was hinted at, but not in your face. I know that to some it may not look like representation, but Clara liked/cared romantically for the Doctor.
I think she goes on to love 12, but in a platonic passionate codependent toxic way. As her platonic love for 12 grew she also fell in love with Danny Pink after his death that codependency grew, but that’s a different topic.
Clara never really over exhausted the topic of her bisexuality to make it be an awkward talking point. She was interested in 11, then loved Danny. Being bisexual is multifaceted. Just because you’re interested currently or previously in a male partner as a woman in a hetero couple of sorts(11) does not make either party less bisexual if they are…
That being said I love some Moffat and other episodes I wonder what he was doing i.e. like all of 7a and the stories leading up to the close of the Ponds though I did love/hate/cry at “The Angels Take Manhattan” there was too much missing in the prior episodes in my opinion.
When Clara was first introduced as the impossible girl that was a hard pill to swallow w the enigma and the skirt that was just a lil bit too tight we knowwww, we knowww. WHY?!? But I don’t think that put Clara in the position to be bisexual to make boys go oooooo. Most boys I know that love Clara and Doctor Who do not even know that she’s bisexual nevermind adding it to the list of reasons they like her. I think it was to make the girls go ooooo😻 and add it to the list of reasons why they liked Clara. All the scene’s I’m referring to are in “Deep Breath” as the examples of how Clara’s sexuality was hinted at. I’ll start with Jenny & Madam Vastra the LESBIAN COUPLE!! She’s hanging w the queer girliesss ya know. Then when Strax looks at her THOUGHTS after her and 11 basically “broke up” and she was hanging w Jenny & Madam Vastra ANDDD she was hanging out with them there for a while! Mind you. She’s upset over 11, realises it was stupid, tries to forget about him in /that/ way. Being around those two J&MV who banter and flirt gave her that like: “i’m ‘gay’ too reminder” lol. ALSO It was morning! when Clara and Strax had that interaction she’s just gotten ready. Ya know where he see’s “young men doing sport, is that sport?”…Strax calls Clara a boy all the time, constantly confusing human gender. Then she gets flustered and finishes Strax’s health inspection reallll quick, so what was Clara thinkin’ about hmmm?? She also woke up that day surprisingly chipper after being upset w 12/over 11. I would say well rested, maybe spent a bit of a morning to herself…After a long night? Then, absolutely, has a strangely flirty interaction with Jenny in the stairwell with some strange undertones. I thought Clara’s bisexuality was carefully hinted at in a noticeably queer way to queer people! It definitely made me feel seen and that’s why I chose to comment on that!
I liked Bill as a character, though she didn’t have enough depth to her yet, similar to how Moffat was originally unable to piece Clara together in full. The way he handled Bill’s sexuality was dealt with awkwardly I agree with you there. I just see Clara’s as much more nuanced. Not sure if you realised, but when you referred to the way the show was dealing with Bill’s sexuality you played a clip where the Doctor punches that rich guy in “Thin Ice”, but it had nothing to do with her sexuality. He punched that guy for being racist and sexist to Bill. Not for being gay. I mean I’m sure if he knew he would’ve tacked that on too lol, but I actually liked that scene with the two of them. It reminded me of the First Doctor, but in 12’s own way and I think that came from Peter Capaldi being a Who fan. Bill & 12 had good companion chemistry, but it was cut short and filled with blundering moments with Bill’s sexuality talk and her inevitable demise. That Master/Missy shit really fucked me up!! especially with how far and obnoxious this version of the Master is compared to Missy who I truly loved, a character of Moffat’s that I really adored. I’ll add that one of my least favourites of his was Danny Pink for his lack of characterisation and poor story arc.
With alllllll of that being said I loved the way that RTD dealt with Rose being trans in “The Star Beast”. I actually didn’t even realise that she was trans the first time I watched it. I was so entranced with 10/14’s dynamic with Donna even not fully knowing him yet, while absolutely knowing him. In her speech at the end I just thought Rose was a woke teenager being sort of annoying in a teenager way lol. Not that you can’t respect others gender/love/presentation ‘choices.’ I liked the speech though in the end (1st watch) because I liked the way it tied in with Donna’s “Binary binary binary binary binary” in “Journey’s End”. After the rewatch I realise what the kids were actually saying to Rose. I just thought that they were bullying her for being a weird art kid or something or Jason was someone she knew. When Donna and her Mum talked about “before” I thought I missed something and that maybe Donna & Sean, Sylvia & Wilf were all so proud and grateful to have her was that she also had a sibling that was a boy/Jason and he somehow passed away and they didn’t want to take her for granted. Not sure how I missed it, but I did not notice til the 2nd watch. Then it really tied everything together and I then loved the Binary/Non-Binary parallel. Although it was a bit of a push on RTD’s part politically to throw non-binary in there in general, BUT after realising Rose isn’t just some “woke ally” who wants to just say stuff for the sake of saying it I liked it much more. She was an actual trans character/actress. Idk if it was announced beforehand that there would be a trans character/actress. I stayed away from all announcements/spoiler-ish things because I wanted to watch it with fresh eyes after Chibnall and loving RTD’s era so much.
