I have purchased an E90 with N43 engine and it has a tampered, rolled back odometer. I brought to the service couple of times and even they did not notice that the timing chain was stretched so badly it damaged the plastic timing chain tensioner and broke it to small pieces that clogged the inlet to the oil pump. Which led to similar damage. Sometime my engine made loud rattling sound at start for about 1 minute and it became quiet, so I never suspected that this could be a problem. Sometimes on highway after driving like 30 minutes and slowing down thus having lower RPM there was a low oil pressure warning, but since I have used the car in the city mainly, I didn't get this warning. Just wanted to share this here, so maybe this info can save some money for others. Thanks for the video, it was helpful.
thanks ! as N43 owner i did go thrue very bad scenario too but not as bad. i would love to see you rebuild this engine im specialy interested in N43 . thanks a lot
Pieces of the broken plastic chain guide blocked the oil pickup. It's all in my teardown video: ruclips.net/video/GHC-HXzjMik/видео.htmlsi=ewVgGlcgZH9eD0y6
216.000 km, it was serivced regularly but i dont know what happened at the end. I've bought it via intermediary person. Previous owner probably ignored knock sounds and warning lights...
My 320i Vanos solonoids is sooo stuck can not get it out, i can not even pry it out with a screw driver whilst having vice grips on it an pulling with all my force. yes the liitle 10mm and bracket on both is removed before someone asks
If the camshaft just spins round in circles within the bearings then what’s wrong with groves ? It’s not going up and down just round and round so it won’t catch.
It also has a small amount of axial play, so eventualy it can wear out the bearing yournals. Check out my N43 cylinder head rebuild video for more context and how I "fixed" it:)
People love to hate this engine saying it's crap..bmw made a petrol engine almost as fuel efficient as a diesel, with nice power direct injected naturally aspirated....problem is...they sold it to people who couldn't be bothered to understand how this engine operates and what it needs. So they treated these cars like kitchen appliances and little to no maintenance. And then the second round of owners came to buy their shiny used bmw coming from port injected ford focus, and figured they could continue to use it like a kitchen appliance and no maintenance. After a lot of research I came to the conclusion this is in fact not the worst bmw engine ever made but rather the most abused and mistreated. Beautiful piece of engineering with a tragic fate. I love mine, especially on long roadtrips.
At first they probably ignored the oil light or just did not commit to finding the root cause. After the rod knock began, they just added more oil and drove the car until it did not want to start anymore.
Yes, if you check out the teardown video you can see how bad the oil is, and also... there was 9 L of oil in the engine! 11 year old air filter from 2012 and i could go on...
@@BimmerZen I have finished the first video from the N43 playlist since I have the same engine and it made me courious. I will continue to watch the rest of them.

Great walk through, thanks!
Another great video, thanks👌🏼
Absolutely. Wonderful engine.
😊
😂😂😂
Great video but what was the actual reason the engine got damaged was it the timing chain guide blocking the oil filter?

Awesome guide. how many miles had that car done and was it serviced regularly?

Grab it with adjustable wrench at the connector base and try to rotate it a little bit. Maybe heating up the engine might help?

This is what happens when you beat the crap out of your car. Mantance, non existent..!! Incredible someone could even drive that car..!!

I have one and it barely gets 40 MPG. Definitely not nearly as good on fuel as a diesel
@@ronanw1 40mpg from a normally aspirated 2.0L petrol is very good.
All of that because someone did not take care of thier car. This has nothing to do with BMW,but with the idiot who did not care, nothing.
This has a lot to do with the N43's design too. Other than the PAS engine (N14,18), this is probably the most unreliable engine they've ever made.

Look how black the oil is when he pulls the VANOS solenoids. Whoever had the car did a very poor job maintaing the thing. Oil looks very old.

Complimenti veramente, tutto spiegato nei minimi dettagli, ho una 120i con motore da rifare, prenderò spunto da questi tutorial, che sono come l oro.
What a pile of crap the N43 is
It's a good engine fundamentaly, but injectors and the plastic chain guides are the main cause of all the problems.
@@BimmerZen Also carbon build up around the valves causing oil burning
I don't think they are a pile of crap as such, but they are not at all tolerant of neglect.
