Let me know what you all think about this topic AND like the video! Also, keep the comments respectful, but honest. I mentioned multiple biracial (mixed with Black) people on this video to prove a point. Also, you can lookup to a creator and criticize them for their problematic takes. We’re not dumb for wanting cultural AND racial discussions to be realistic. Lastly, check the description for more information if you want to dig deeper📌

THANKKKK YOOOU...cause I'm so tired of some people capitalizing off of people assuming they're monoracial when they're not. I think multicultural/biracial people are beautiful but I wish our binary society would just let those apart of the African disapora that are of biracial/multiracial identities celebrate and embrace ALL of their racial heritage instead of using it as a means to diminish mono racial black identities AND their possible OPPORTUNITIES.

Thank you for being the first person to comment! Also, I agree with everything you just said. These distinctions are important, especially with how a lot of places are being more racially diverse, and some mixed-race people (including their parents) weaponize their Black heritage. A few have valid reasons while others not so much😒💯

OMG muito brigado Julian for bringing up the FD Signifer video 😭
As an Angolan, we don’t view Mulattos as Black. Since we were colonized by Portugal we have a race classification for every admixtures so they’re not regrouped into the same Census as us or the Brancos.
I tried to explain to him that his views were very demeaning and US centric but he gaslighted me saying he’s never heard of Laton (that’s how we call them here lol) being differentiated in Africa 🙄
Clearly he doesn’t do his research on other black countries.

I got lit up in that FD video’s comments. It’s not a fair take. I just think that language should have meaning and when we use words/categories LOOSELY we muddy the waters for everyone. We even make mixed race people feel lumped into an identity they may not fully fit into 🤷🏾‍♀️. Idk I can see all sides but I really dislike how condescending they are about saying biracial = black.

    • @JulianSteve
      @JulianSteve  11 месяцев назад +23

His biracial = Black take is not fair! I didn’t appreciate how he put the blame mostly on Black women. Then, he proceeds to call us Black men who disagree with his take as Hoteps! I’m not a Hotep and I don’t think identifying biracial (mixed with Black) people as “just Black” is fine. This is a form of erasure for both Black and mixed with Black people. At least in this era.
Thank you for letting me know❤️👏🏾!

Black to me is: 1. Being genetically black 2. Identifying as black 3. Culturally being black
you have to have all 3 🤷🏾‍♀️

Exactly! Thank you! That’s how I see the definition “Black” race wise (cultural too). As for F.D’s wife, I believe she’s a bit darker, but on camera she looks more brown skin😭

The quote from La La was really impactful and it shows how Afro-Latinos, such as yourself, have to constantly fight for your identities. I didn’t know much about Matt James but he shows that some Black/Biracial mixed with Black men will gladly date a non-Black person who has been racist/anti-Black in the past but won’t give another Black person a chance. It’s giving self-hatred and internalized racism to me. On Twitter, a Biracial man accused me of gate-keeping Blackness so I had to re-think my views. I remember he mentioned being harassed by the police because most people see him as a light-skinned Black man. Ever since then I felt that any biracial (mixed w/ Black) person who wanted to solely identify as Black had that right. Nevertheless, I get where you’re coming from because Blackness is more than just phenotype and skin complexion. Blackness is a culture just like Asian and Latino cultures. There is a commonness in how we’re raised regardless which part of the country you’re from. The food we eat growing up, the music etc. My biracial friends and coworkers who had Black moms, grew up around Black folks or got to be around the Black side of their families come across more Black (culturally speaking) to me. That’s why I feel J. Cole who grew up around Black folks and the majority of his friends are Black is more secure in who he is than someone like Drake. Drake wants to be a ninja from the hood of every country in the African diaspora so bad. I used to think it was corny but cute. Now I’m like over it and them hair clips he got in his dang on head lol Sorry for the last part. I listened to his new album today and got irritated. His song with J Cole was the only real highlight for me.

Johnieeeeeeeeeeee! Thank you for writing this. Seriously, it’s impactful, and made sense to me. Matt James sure loves these types of non-black women. If only he knew that’s going to affect him in the long run. Watch him open up once they REALLY break up!
By the way, J. Cole didn’t grew up with his Black father, but his White mother sure raised him right. I give credit when it’s due. As for Drake’s latest album… I liked the album, but certain lyrics were not hitting for me. The hair clips on his hair look cool surface level👏🏾😭!

yo and nice to see someone from the bx making these kinds of videos and to answer your question no people like derrick jeter and hallie berry kids are not black they are mostly white with some black in them. and also the concept of race is complex when outside of the u.s F.D was did not put that in mind so for ex places like pr and dr and ja and trinidad view race diiferently and etc nice video btw.

Hey! Also, thank you for letting me know! I agree with what you wrote here. F.D did acknowledge that he’s talking in a U.S.A. perspective, but his take is lacking nuance for Black people. I believe that he’s planning to make a video on biracial (mixed with Black) people soon. I have a feeling that the takes are going to be base on U.S.A. history ONLY! Shaking my head🤦🏾‍♂️💯

Gosh I don’t want this to be a hateful comment on FD signifier but I’m glad you said what you said on his video bc my gosh was I personally triggered by that, he really didn’t get at all what he was, first him saying he views you as black if you are pulled over my police … so are we gonna ignore that study have shown that lighter skinned people of mixed race ancestry are less likely to be harmed by police and that darker skinned black men and women are the most likely? And how condemning and dismissive he was to people who felt this sentiment was ugggh, like I think the dude makes great videos but for me both him and foreign man in a foreign land have exposed their true colors way too many times for me to like them.

I understand how you feel, Kevin. That was a poor example to use, especially when you REALLY look into the statistics like you just said! Why does everything have to do with Black trauma? Why? Not everything “Black” has to do with our trauma.
As for Foreign Man in a Foreign Land… Maybe I’m biased because I collaborated with him a few times and I talked to him privately a few times too… Whenever he discusses Black identity, he’s more fair. In the biracial (mixed with Black) and Black sense compared to F.D. As for everything else, I can’t say much.
I do know why you have a few issues with Foreign Man. I remembered what you told me the last time. I totally get where you’re coming from.

@@fae3821 in a few of Foreign Man’s videos, he has said things that sound like digs at African Americans (Black Americans). One video I can say I heard the digs is in his “Apparently I’m not Black.” I do not think that was his intention, especially since he’s married to a Black American woman. That’s just my opinion. Being someone who is Jamaican who’s mom family roots trace back to being black Americans, I know a lot of the hatred that is rooted in black Americans from Caribbeans are bc a lot of Caribbean cultures are low key sub ethnicities to black Americans or have black American ancestry in them so I just think as someone with a big platform like foreign it’s not safe to continue push those notions by being misinformed or being clearly biased against them while not holding the Caribbean community for the role they play in the diaspora war that’s my thing with my but god bless he is a smart, funny and very talented guy

Interesting, as a person of Garifuna descent, who considers herself black and Indigenous. I feel lots of people need to understand the difference between Race, Nationality, and Ethnicity. How race in the US has created this idea of labels, and categories that do not determine our humanity. Diversity matters so knowing people's background feed knowledge of how small the world is, and how similar we all are. I am glad you made this video, as it challenges the normal, and it offers people something new to think about.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the Erica Mena / Spice situation. Especially since Erica Mena is a lightskinned nonblack Latina from the Bronx that's ingratiated into Black culture and Spice is a Afro Jamaican woman who is darkskinned. I'm very surprised that you didn't speak on it since the discourse touches on your content subject matter directly. Another RUclipsr made a video in response to the situation, Shan Boody who is mixed race and her perspective was interesting. Love to hear your perspective.

You can be 3/4 black and 1/4 something else especially if it’s non white and still be mixed. You just need to look phenotypically mixed to be mixed. This is less common though but race is solely based on phenotype as genotype doesn’t really exist. If you are looking like Matt James or Obama don’t expect anyone to say you’re mixed but if you look like Beyoncé then sure. Saying biracial isn’t black is fucking stupid because of this because some biracial people are black and some biracial people are not. We need to take it on a case by case basis.
Beyonce is more mixed than Obama clearly even though she is less white than obama
