Like there's something to it that we're not seeing yet.
@Pst Chris Okafor why does the church love matrix? the whole point is wanting to break free of the cage cause once u know it's there, u can't be free. you must live it to know it. like westworld.
The reason why this action scene is so great is because everything is done for a good reason, not just because it looks cool. They are both trying to get an important character to safety and are being chased by two different and incredibly dangerous enemies which forces them into increasingly dangerous situations. The pacing of the chase is also broken into satisfying 'chunks' so you can catch your breath and assess what is happening, the adrenaline fuelled music mixed with more cinematic orchestral elements is blended perfectly, and the impressive CGI traffic on the bike ride into oncoming traffic still holds up even today. Modern action films could take a few lessons from this entire sequence, including the chateau fight preceding this sequence as well as the fight on top of the truck. I still think if this film was about 30 minutes shorter it'd be right up there with the first but you can't deny the action and fight choreography is second to none.
@@kionx1548 No the vast majority of them that she dodges are CGI. Like the truck at 3:47 and all the cars after that she dodges. They are all fake. They did this for safety reasons and you can also check the behind the scenes if you want. Its really well done CGI but they are still not real. They did the slow moving real cars for the less dangerous shots and also the vehicles that she needed to interact with.
@@kionx1548 when Trinity is swerving in and out of oncoming traffic head on, that is all or at least part CGI, it's explained in the film extras. You can actually tell if you look hard enough but essentially how else would they achieve those crazy camera angles under the trucks? The traffic flowing in the same direction is real.
Chateau is the best fight in the entire trilogy. That slow-mo shot mid-way where Neo's cartwheeling is just perfection. Plus it's multiple antagonists all at once, which most movies struggle with, preferring the 'form an orderly queue and attack one by one please' choreography. Only thing that bothers me is I think it's the only scene where Neo 'uses the force' and has objects zip into his hand, like the two daggers from the wall. Jarred me then and still does.
0:06 always loved how you can actually see the bullet holes being made in the car as the Agent shoots the gun adds that extra layer of "weight" and realism to the sequence that is missing from a lot of action movies.
This freeway scene had everything, Agents, The Twins Cops, The at the time Wachowski Brothers gave everyone their spotlight, Neo, Morpheus and Trinity!!!
1:04 is the standout for me. The visuals in this are severely underrated. I’m simply talking about the Escalade vs Morpheus, my favorite section of the highway scene.
To this day, this sequence in its entirety is probably the best in any action movie to me. Didn't need an IP or a ton of movies to get you invested (MCU). It was just great cinematography, hype, and a great soundtrack that underscored the best moments.
I'm Matrix fan for 20 yrs and I'm glad that new sequel announced. Yesterday I watched The Matrix Resurrections(2021) in my country. Whole movie emotion can't even compare to this scene. What are you doing WB!!!!
Incredible that the effects, the soundtrack the photography were lightyears better almost 20 years ago than nowadays, today I watched matrix 4 and just talking of the effects are icomparables, everyday I realize you have to value these jewels because unfortunately you won’t watch anything like this anymore!!
Actually EDM was huge at that time and X an Raves were coolest thing to do, to the point they were semi outlawed in places for a while . People would even dress like they were at raves at school. The most classic songs of EDM were made around the time the Matrix came out.
Truly a badass sequence and one of my favourites from The Matrix. Loved how Morpheus and Trinity went straight to the action and didn't have nonsensical discussions like in some other films and if they did have talks it was revelant to the plot and didn't go off rails. Nothing else to say but that this scene is legendary.
I've watched this scene at least two dozen times and it STILL NEVER. GETS. OLD. Except I always start from the point where Neo says he'll "Handle them" and the Merovingian pettily replies "You know, your predecessors had much more respect!" and has his goons fruitlessly try to pump clips full of bullets into Neo which he effortlessly stops with his mind before that sick, kick-ass instrumental track that Don Davis made starts AND I watch it all the way through to the point where Neo saves Morpheus and the Key maker from the roof of the exploding trucks. The whole thing is just 21 minutes straight of nothing but pure epicness.
@Pst Chris Okafor You know, Simon the sorcerer tried to use the gospel to sell grace. God cursed him and he was about to die a terrible death but alas when finally he repented he was spared from that death. He realized that you could never sell anything that Jesus gave for free. So in Jesus name I rebuke you, fraudulent bastard.. Repent or hellfire is all that awaits you.
The music changing completely while showing Morpheus's face filled with determination is the best part of this scene. Especially with it being followed up with a shot of the truck looking much bigger than Morpheus. All leading up to Morpheus slicing into the truck with ease. One of the best scenes in this movie
This scene works because of the combination between live action stunts and CGI. It's the perfect mix. Set the stage with obvious real shots - driving real cars, in traffic, wide shots of the highway - and then put your actors in impossible situations where you can add CGI vehicles (well hidden with motion blur!) to make the close calls look even closer. You have to really be paying attention to catch the fake cars even after repeated viewing. But by the time they're owning the scene, you've seen enough real stuntwork that you're bought in. Just incredible work.
One thing that made me appreciate the matrix as a trilogy is how thin everyone’s plot armor was. Like almost everyone died in Matrix, so things felt like a toss up even for a chase scene with Trinity and Morpheus
@@purefoldnz3070 Trinity, Neo and Morpheus all died in the end. Morpheus died not long after the machines made peace with with the Humans on Zion. So, yes, plot armor didn't save them lol.
@@TonyLeviosa Morpheus didn't die. Neo sacrificed himself on purpose. The only one to die without wanting to was Trinity. Though at the end of trilogies plot armor seems to wear a bit thin. Of course none of the main characters are going to die in the second movie. Its the very definition of plot armor.
@@purefoldnz3070 It doesn't matter in what manner they died. They still died and the plot did not protected them from imminent death. (And yes, it is Canon that Morpheus did die). Otherwise, they all would have lived and the plot / story would have protected them and continued on. But It didn't. The plot and the story all came to an abrupt stop the moment they passed away. "Plot armor" never applied to them.
The middle segment of this movie is incredible. No one is saying otherwise. People dislike the movie and particularly it's sequel because the movies didn't play to their strengths and focus more on scenes like this. The sequel to this had almost no Matrix action lol
I think some people didn't like where they went with the mythology and lore in the sequels. Nobody disputes how incredible the action sequences are. I honestly really like the sequels for the most part.
Well, maybe watch the entire movie and not just the cool parts, then you'll know why. They had a lot of cool ideas but many of them were delivered unprofessionally and weird. The plot was a mess, the action scenes were great by themselves but felt detached/showhorned, it had some horrible dialogue, Keanu acted it our all wooden (because he is "the one" now, probably), great characters like the twins were just wasted and all in all it just doesn't wrap up. It's okay as the middle part of a trilogy if you binge watch it all at once but it's horrible as a movie on it's own. And while the action scenes were mostly great we also had comically bad scenes like the first Neo vs manySmiths fight with actual bowling sounds when a group of smiths got knocked over, adding to the bad CGI of that particular scene.
Just everything about these movies is insane. The acting, the sound, the music. Everything. I don't think we fully realize even today how incredible the Matrix trilogy was. And yes, i know it sort of ended a bit "meh". But did it? It may have taken me a few decades to ponder, but i actually like very much how things went in the 2nd and 3rd movie. Yeah, sure, the fist was BY FAR the best of the trilogy. But they had to up the ante in 2 and 3 and i believe they did. And they did it not by giving us what we wanted, but by challenging us with profound concepts to ponder. Its really a story about the human spirit and, ultimately, how love trumps all.
One of the things that is an absolute masterclass with this scene is just how *essential* timing is when it comes to the score. Examples: 0:18 to 0:23, we hear the music pick up in tensity as Agent Johnson slams into Trinity's car. 0:30 - The music levels out and eases when the car crashes into the water barrels. 1:08 to 1:22 - Morpheus gets ready to take on the twins and the music again, ramps up, to a PERFECTION ending as it releases just as his sword completes cutting through the car. 1:27 - The techno beat picks up perfectly as you see the gun in his hand pull around and begin to aim 2:09 to 2:22 - Again, ramping up to Trinity revving the motorcycle and the beat proceeding as usual as soon as the tires hit the ground. And then there's the moment at 4:25 where Morpheus retrieves the Keymaster and the badass techno beat kicks in perfectly as he removed his sunglasses in such a cool way. This scene showed me how paramount timing is when it comes to music, and there hasn't really been anything like it since.
Also, there have been things like it, far less common now cause nowadays if someone tries to make good music timing, its automatically a copy to matrix's soundtrack according to all viewers.
I absolutely love the crescendo, when Trinity turns back and starts riding against the traffic, the violin picks up and then, what sounds like every single drum from South Africa to Japan - an entire percussion orchestra - joins the band to accompany the brass towards the highest point... That stuff is not of this Earth.
Bro what happened I can’t believe how much better these scenes were compared to the Matrix 4. I’m devastated actually. Refuse to believe this is the same filmmaker
The Wachowski's point is that they didn't want to make just an "action scene" because for 20 years everyone has been copying them from top to bottom. Every year you have 5 marvel movies that "vomits" another copied idea from the Matrix trilogy again and again and again and again... So Lana just wanted to focus on the hearth of the story and the humor. Not action or visuals. While watching the movie you can feel a big "fuck you" to action and visuals and that's part of the whole idea.
It's not. It used to be the Wachowski brothers, but they got infected with the liberal bullshit and on of them chopped of his own cock. You are definitely not the same filmmakers after that
Technically they are not the same... How could i explain it? They, have "changed" of some Kind and during this changing process, you know, the added hormons and stuff, they must have change other things, too. Like making good Movies.
I remember when this scene came to mental images. 32-bit Windows, max 3.2GB RAM, just wouldn't render, there was too much geometry. Kristjan, Max and I discussed how to fix it, but ultimately, the solution was to implement a flushing BSP. Once we needed more memory, we would flush the least recently seen data, and load in the required geometry. I wrote a Reader-Writer Lock across Windows and Unix, and this allowed us to flush entire branches, making sure that when we were running out of memory, we could always get some more. The block-allocation memory subsystem made allocations more memory efficient, and made it all work. These were the most exciting times of my career. The crashing truck scene rendered, finally, and the movie went on.
This segment and the actions scenes in T2 are my fav of all time. Literally unrivaled in terms of scope, over the top action, and cinematography. I have high hopes for Matrix Resurrections but I’ll mitigate my expectations.
They should just play this scene before the matrix4 movie starts. That should pump the crowd. BTW, the sound and editing is just amazing. Almost 20 years and this blows away all the crap we have floating around.
One of the greatest action set pieces ever filmed. It made the entire movie worth it. Something that was surely missing from Resurrections. The lack of Fishburne, Weaving, or any good action scenes made it boring as hell. Like 4:18 Morpheus literally is between two moving semi truckers and lifts the key maker up with one hand. The new movie had none of the exciting power of the older Matrix movies.
You're seriously comparing this to the new movie?. Lmao. 13 year gap between them and that new sht of a production is a bazillion steps down in every aspect that it can be (script, cinematography, visual effects, set design, scene design, choreography and fight scenes, score, acting, characters, dialogue, etc) in respect to the og thrilogy. The new movie isn't even worth mentioning, it's a joke and a disgrace. I'm personally happier rewatching the og trilogy while disavowing and ignoring the existence of the new one.
The new one had some good action scenes but they lacked the finesse Reloaded carried especially with the 2021 Neo and Smith fight which felt nostalgic minus poor Weaving. The only thing the new one perfected or did right from the old movies was the abstract dialogue speaking about politics of the time and the slow motion fight scenes. It's funny how the new movie was so self-aware that it was a clear irrelevant cash grab, the characters in the scenes where Neo was creating the Matrix game kept talking about whether the movie needed to be made and how they'd go about doing it.
when Morpheus removes his jacket and glasses after getting the Keymaker on the truck it always did look to me as though he was squaring up to kick his ass lol
Tamest, most boring shit ever. Cant believe we went from this to trash SNL filth, calling trinity a milf and neo taking a dump, followed by monotenous action and boring fucking fan fiction. Unreal that this was approved. I dont ever want to watch this disgusting film ever again. There are only 3 matrix films.
And that Excatly why it didn’t ….. it challenge nostalgia and y’all wanted the same thing as the first but it went the other way . It basically mocked what ppl were hoping
@@joshuaswaby8933 No we didn't want the same thing, after twenty years the fighting choreography and some of the effects were not even at the same level, it should be better, Marvel fans understand what i mean.
I only now realized that the reason Morpheus cuts the car with the sword is to blow the rear tyre, so that the car trips. All these years I was like wtf, why does he, out of all things, randomly try to cut the car.
Its so fascinating realizing this whole sequence was filmed of parts of cgi towards trinity driving in an partially empty highway to adding a whole bunch of cars (i wonder how everyone was feeling driving home/work that day) 5 year old me when this came out. I was shooked to the max
What I absolutely love about this scene is that movement, flexibility and adaptability are the fighting strengths of a woman and Trinity showcases those better than anyone else. Morpheous knows this when he tells her to get the Keymaker out - he knows she's better than anyone else at adapting, improvising and finding a way through the Matrix. Fantastic scene. There are in fact SO MANY scenes that were so very well done in this movie.
Also one cannot help but notice that there was a quite similar scene (with even slow-mo) in Terminator 2 where Arnie (more specifically his stunt double) jumped into the sewer with the Harley. ;)
Great catch! I always loved that too. I think Ducati payed a lot for the product placement. Having wrong motorcycle sound effects being dubbed over the actual one is a problem though. I hate to see sports and naked bikes and then hear a clear chopper sound dubbed over them because the sound editor thought 'it sounded cooler'
IMO this is the best highway action scene of all time. This is actual highway not desert and this is all in one with car chases, gun fights, and top tier physical fights all in one. Nothing remotely even comes close to this. They actually build a highway section just for this scene. Good music too.

lots of people don´t know that, but Trinity, Carrrie-Anne Moss did never drive a motorcycle before that movie, she actually learned it for it, friggin awesome...
From Neo fighting the exiles to him saving Morpheus and the key maker, that was one of greatest 20 minutes of nonstop action in film, accompanied by the most befitting music.
this scene alone made me want to buy a motorcycle. not that i’m gonna go 100 in opposing traffic but still Trinity banging gears in the Ducati made me want one so bad.
I love that shot too, the switch happens so quickly which adds to the tension of the scene. The only thing that makes me laugh is how the police officer looks like Will Ferrell.
This scene is awesome for showing all the factions and their characteristica. How they fight, what power they can project in the matrix, how they behave facing off etc.. The exile programs with their strong but abnormal abilities, the humans which have to rely on cunning to evade and the system itself, an unstoppable force which can only be delayed, but never stopped. You can even see it in their choice of vehicles. The humans have this small but agile cadillac sedan/ducati, the exile programs a heavy and strong gmc SUV and the matrix/system an infinite fleet of pretty beefy police cruisers (great size comparison at 0:26). A great scene overall.

I still think if this film was about 30 minutes shorter it'd be right up there with the first but you can't deny the action and fight choreography is second to none.
couldn't agree more
The traffic is not cgi they actually had the real cars with low speed
Probably the best motorbike scene ever made!
Agree, the only thing is that motorbike are way more faster it's a bit frustating

Nah, the visuals of the Matrix franchise are anything but underrated.
I'm liking the relatively small wheels on that EXT nowadays trucks like that will have disproportionally large 22 inches wheels in my opinion.
Oh hands down! Best scene in the movie
To this day, this sequence in its entirety is probably the best in any action movie to me. Didn't need an IP or a ton of movies to get you invested (MCU). It was just great cinematography, hype, and a great soundtrack that underscored the best moments.
This is such a 🤬ing masterclass in action filmmaking; the shots, editing, music, actors, all in one dance. It's incredible.

can you believe this great scene was shot in the years 2002 -03. So ahead of its times , excellent action scenes, background score
How it was meant to be enjoyed!
The action scenes of the matrix were so clean. I love it!

This scene is where I learned that those bins on the highway have water in them.

Fun fact : that freeway is actually was made on a old military landing strip
One thing that made me appreciate the matrix as a trilogy is how thin everyone’s plot armor was. Like almost everyone died in Matrix, so things felt like a toss up even for a chase scene with Trinity and Morpheus
well you know Neo, Trinity and Morpheus are going to survive. Sounds like plenty of plot armor to me.
Lol what there's plenty of plot armor
I still can't fathom why people dislike this movie.
The middle segment of this movie is incredible. No one is saying otherwise.
People dislike the movie and particularly it's sequel because the movies didn't play to their strengths and focus more on scenes like this. The sequel to this had almost no Matrix action lol
They just chose the blue pill
And while the action scenes were mostly great we also had comically bad scenes like the first Neo vs manySmiths fight with actual bowling sounds when a group of smiths got knocked over, adding to the bad CGI of that particular scene.
stuff like the camera following the action under 2 trucks is what adds so much to this scene… No wasted BS just sick music and a badass chase
Thats the bike Keanu has in his bike shop. It would be completely priceless.

Examples:
0:18 to 0:23, we hear the music pick up in tensity as Agent Johnson slams into Trinity's car.
0:30 - The music levels out and eases when the car crashes into the water barrels.
1:08 to 1:22 - Morpheus gets ready to take on the twins and the music again, ramps up, to a PERFECTION ending as it releases just as his sword completes cutting through the car.
1:27 - The techno beat picks up perfectly as you see the gun in his hand pull around and begin to aim
2:09 to 2:22 - Again, ramping up to Trinity revving the motorcycle and the beat proceeding as usual as soon as the tires hit the ground.
And then there's the moment at 4:25 where Morpheus retrieves the Keymaster and the badass techno beat kicks in perfectly as he removed his sunglasses in such a cool way.
This scene showed me how paramount timing is when it comes to music, and there hasn't really been anything like it since.
Wasnt agent johnson, that was the third agent, the one driving the car agent johnson jumped off of to get the their car
Also, there have been things like it, far less common now cause nowadays if someone tries to make good music timing, its automatically a copy to matrix's soundtrack according to all viewers.
love those moments where the techno comes back in after you've gotten a chance to breath and take in the gravity of a fantastic sequence
Very well said, glad to see more people that pay attention for the score.
21 years later, and I'm still watching this masterpiece again and again ...

That’s how it’s always been years ago lol

Like 4:18 Morpheus literally is between two moving semi truckers and lifts the key maker up with one hand. The new movie had none of the exciting power of the older Matrix movies.
This scene tells u that they’d actually gave a fuck back in the day, now it’s all about shitting on a franchise if they bring it back. How sad 😞
@@RabiaDeConejo yeah, the new one is a blatant cash grab
The new one had some good action scenes but they lacked the finesse Reloaded carried especially with the 2021 Neo and Smith fight which felt nostalgic minus poor Weaving. The only thing the new one perfected or did right from the old movies was the abstract dialogue speaking about politics of the time and the slow motion fight scenes. It's funny how the new movie was so self-aware that it was a clear irrelevant cash grab, the characters in the scenes where Neo was creating the Matrix game kept talking about whether the movie needed to be made and how they'd go about doing it.

I only now realized that the reason Morpheus cuts the car with the sword is to blow the rear tyre, so that the car trips. All these years I was like wtf, why does he, out of all things, randomly try to cut the car.

The most intense motorcycle chase ever
What I absolutely love about this scene is that movement, flexibility and adaptability are the fighting strengths of a woman and Trinity showcases those better than anyone else. Morpheous knows this when he tells her to get the Keymaker out - he knows she's better than anyone else at adapting, improvising and finding a way through the Matrix. Fantastic scene. There are in fact SO MANY scenes that were so very well done in this movie.
Gives me chills every time when the motorcycle is slowed down as they riding off of the truck. This film was way ahead of it's time.
Also one cannot help but notice that there was a quite similar scene (with even slow-mo) in Terminator 2 where Arnie (more specifically his stunt double) jumped into the sewer with the Harley. ;)
I am not this movie’s biggest fan but this entire sequence is goated
I think this has to be one of the only movies that didn't dub over the amazing sound of a Ducati.
Best car chase scene of all time. I don’t care what y’all think of the movie
IMO this is the best highway action scene of all time. This is actual highway not desert and this is all in one with car chases, gun fights, and top tier physical fights all in one. Nothing remotely even comes close to this. They actually build a highway section just for this scene. Good music too.
Reloaded is the best film in the entire franchise, it is better even than the first film.
Matrix Reloaded is one of the most stylish and beautiful action movies ever, I love every action scene in this movie, just so well done
The funny thing about this scene is Morpheus sticking his sword into the top of the truck and then it appears at the bottom.
And its back at the top again latter, they don't have continuity people in the Matrix.
Also the trucks wall is not really solid. He must have guessed that something that can support him was standing inside.

As outstanding as the chase itself is in this scene, my favorite shot is of the police officer switching to an agent at 3:39. Such a perfect sequence.
