Great stuff. My first recce patrol was in the pissing rain in Brecon. Grim. My admin was a bag of shite and I had severe blisters from previous days of walking on grass like baby heads. The kit we had back then was 58 pattern webbing and large packs. This was obviously designed by some remf who had never spent a night outdoors. I really hated the kit and knew it wasn't fit for purpose. When I was on ops in NI we were told by our platoon commander that we were not aloud to wear waterproof jackets when it was raining in case the enemy heard us. The Army was great. Durch!
I am former soldier too from a very poor army. We would go out mostly at night and sometimes even in stormy weather when the visibility is almost zero. The only way to keep us from getting lost is to stay close and to attach biolumenescent pieces of decayed wood at the back of our backpacks. The only one allowed to use a flashlight is our lead scout. And the muzzle of the flashlight is covered with rubber tubing to contain the excess light. We had no NV, no thermal imagers, nothing of the fancy stuff you have. We also had no waterproof jackets, windbreakers or ponchos to keep us warm. The only way to keep us warm is to keep ourselves moving. Sometimes I would place plastic beneath my sweatshirt for insulation and it works. Life was really hard back then but I really missed every second of it. Now I am into trail running which is far safer than being a low-budget commando. Lol
Great collection of training films! They bring back a lot of memories.
