I have my great uncle’s signal mirror that was used in combat in Italy in WW2. He navigated minefields at night time to recon enemy positions, with nothing but a bayonet to probe for mines. He spent 24 hours doing this and brought back valuable intel. He was awarded the bronze star for this.
Made me laugh when you said "flashlight is for lighting dark areas" lol. Love your videos man. You might wanna consider keeping a 1 gallon zip lock freezer bag folded up with your meds and iodine. It weighs nothing, and can be used as an emergency water container for use with purifying tablets if you ever get separated from your canteen or your water bladder gets damaged. Just a thought. I carry one in my woods survival kit when backpacking.
I always have carried a combat load of ammo, this setup makes me think about switching it up some and I also wear mine up high, its a chest rig not a belly rig.
Still need a plate carrier, I'm going to try the esstac daeodon whenever they come back in stock. Kinda like the mayflower pc if you haven't seen them.
Love the videos. It's great to finally have weapon/survival oriented videos that aren't either a delusional prepper or a 'roid monster screeching about themselves. You just kind of hold up the thing you want to talk about, and then talk about it. The style of talking in front of a black background is great, again it's so much better than other videos like this that are either filmed in somebody's closet or out in a windy field where the wind drowns out the mic. 10/10 production values and style. Oh, and good info stuff too.
Chest rigs are often overlooked over plate carriers but they are great option because they are lightweight and breathable. Most people forget that with chest rigs are comfortable with backpacks and lightweight so I can go on a long camping trip with daddy with all of my skittles and Hi-Cs in my pack. Also they are way more compact so my mom won`t get angry at me for wanting to take too much gear to the airsoft game.
It is so great to watch someone who completely knows what they are doing! There is probably ZERO chance that I will be setting up a chest rig but what a pleasure to watch an expert!
Dammit this one was brutal to get through with headphones. Every time you look down down at the rig my ears bleed a little more. Seriously, I cannot get enough of these videos. Excellent job.

Former SAS here, I would actually advise carrying fresnel lenses for firestarting and other uses they are light (about the weight of a piece of paper) small and capable of reaching temperatures that melt rocks and steel (yes it will burn through padded locks and cable if needed)...it is essentially a magnifying lense on steroids...just make sure you keep it wrapped up when not using it because it can burn a hole clean through your skin and bones in a matter of seconds. It's also good for cooking if you know how to use it right...(basically flash over the meal quickly never letting it sit too long in one spot) Best part is these things work even with cloudy overcast weather. And cost nearly nothing.
Pretty cool to come across this old video when googling “mayflower chest rig”. Always appreciate you input and in this case, very cool to see how far you have come! ‘Rah!
But in all seriousness, great video Garand Thumb. Chest rigs are so underlooked for recce and long range patrols and you bring up so many good points. Keep up the good work!
Big fan of your vids. Thank you for your service too! I am just looking into modular kit style set ups. I like the idea of scalability from just a chest rig to chest rig/Backpack (short term/longer term). My Son and I both want to take one or two of your classes.
Thanks Brother, between this video and the one about the pack, you really helped give me some food for thought. I am a Veteran Infantryman, but trying to combine my training, experiences, and my love for camping and exploring. Much appreciated

Great video, many solid talking points. The problem I always run into is when I dawn my body armor, and chest rig, which both are low pro setup; my ruck normally has to be a military issue in order to find that sweet spot durning long humps. I find normally a framed ruck, with the wide extra long straps you typically get with said military rucks fills that void. Again, my armor and chest rig do fall into the low profile category, but with that being said...I still tend to find my shoulder area to be a bit of a bottle neck with all the webbing that gets bunched up there. Topically I'm talking long range patrol for seven to ten days, extra ammunition, water, and even when your rations are dehydrated you are talking fifty/sixty pounds in all. I guess my question too you is, what is your experience with this? I don't believe or can remember watching one video on RUclips that address all three items to be worn at the same time in one video. It's either chest rigs w/armor or chest rigs w/ruck sack; I have to guess a video covering all three would not be sexy at all. More like taking a drunk, two pack a day, forty something year old chick to your high school prom. My time in the Army, we just sucked it up and dealt with it, but I see many folks out there who have not seriously looked at this. I totally get what you are saying when you stress to your viewers...train with their gear, it's a must if you want to be successful at the end of the day! As always, excellent review! This chest rig seems to be exactly what im looking for. In your chest rig comparision video, you mentioned that the mayflower rig was tight for PMAGS. To clarify, do they hang up on reinsertion or drawing the mags as well? Im stacked deep on pmags so being able to use them is critical. Reinsertion is not a critical as drawing them for me.
Nice n precise. I place my knife in the same position as well. But I would prefer the IFAK somewhere in the middle (12 o’clock) so that it can be reached by either hand.
Personally would not recommend that Leatherman, the 4 blades all protrude past the grip and you'd be surprised at how sharp the back corners of those blades are. Ended up with unnecessary cuts on my hand from simply gripping it too hard trying to complete a task. I've started using less lotion when I jerk so hopefully that helps
It's also heavy for what is essentially just a plier. Loved mine for 25 years but never find it all that useful for some reason. Also, maybe use lip balm on your hands instead of lotion?
Question on interest, water supply,! Do you only have your 3L bladder, or you have something more just in case you have to drop your pack, if you do where do you keep it? Still keeping in mind recce chest rig. Love you channel keep up the awesome videos
Have you ever tried the Suunto MC-2 Global compass? Much better for reading maps than a lensatic compass, and the magnetic declination adjustments of it is awesome, also very handy to adjust both Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
You should try our system. "Fusion System Marom Dolphin." I carried my packs like you show in this video for many years. Fusion System is the answer to numb shoulders and lower back pain.
I know this is a old video. I just found it and wondeted how you fit and attached your knife. I know Esee knives come with a molle attachment capability, but I don't see any molle. I think you said there is none on that rig. Thank you for the tips. Alwsys appreciated.
Every rigs different but a lot of the micro rigs that can be used as a placard on a carrier too is a way to mount a knife. I have an ulti clip screwed into sheath and have it latched behind my mags and then sandwich it between the Velcro pieces. Another way is if your straps have attachment points for comms or water you could take paracord and strap it on a shoulder harness. Hope that helps.
Lot of great info. in your videos. Very much appreciated. Like the chest rig set up, as I usually have too much stuff on my belt when out and about. And that sure screws up using the hip belt on my pack when hiking. You have a lot of items for survival in your chest rig, but what about water? If you're not carrying a big pack all the time, do you have a solution for carrying water?
My girlfriend uses that chapstick and ive been taking the piss out of it for months. I asked why she loves those blue balls and not mine. Gonna have to steal them. Thanks again for quality programming flannel father
I'd like to see a video on tactical comms for civilian use. I just purchased the Peltor Comtac XPI headset and am looking into getting my HAM tech licence.
My problem is, I'm old school LBE/LBV. I understand chest rigs. I just haven't found one that I like. Or looks like it's comfortable to wear. I might just be chasing a dream. Or some airsoft fantasy loadout.
I stand 5'4" tall and I would like to wear my chest rigs high, but I can't given no one seems yo make them to fit anyone my size. For that reason, I have to chose between wearing a chest rig, or a cummerbund, but I can't wear both at the same time. The reason that matters to me is I have a real bad back, and I'd like to get as much weight as possible off my back, but still would like more real estate than I can get on just a cummerbund. I guess that's the price of being short.
I know this is a very old video, but just curious. While working in a NPE, would you be wearing body armor with this set up? Curious how well that integrates? Do you wear a super low profile carrier? Do you wear just a front plate at that point so the back plate doesn’t hurt your back when the pack is on it. I have never found a comfortable way to run a ruck with a carrier. I love the chest rig, just curious about personal protection with the gear. Also do you ever leave room in your rucks for NOD’s or do you just keep them on the helmet and stow them all together?
Day Recce? Even a 12hr pack should be able to keep you 24hrs. Dude, if you don't plan to spend the night in the bush, why even go on the date? .... GO RECCE !!
I remember this guy from "Blues Clues". He's much more buff now.

I'm a year late, but you make a really good point... I'm gonna start doing this
Snickers bad Twix bar good
Sanction762 have you got that advice from Larry Snickers? (He's former Delta Force)
I read this like "If you've ever had a pouch and you don't need it there, go ahead and put a snickers bar in it"
They should really start making Combat snickers, the package should def have a velcro on it.
I always have carried a combat load of ammo, this setup makes me think about switching it up some and I also wear mine up high, its a chest rig not a belly rig.

Dude, if you don't plan to spend the night in the bush, why even go on the date? .... GO RECCE !!
